pattern making We collected samples of only natural elements and made a pattern applicable to a variety of products. After multiple ideas and abstraction, a digital pattern with mockups was finalised. This project helped me to get used to the practice of multiple drafts and improvisation.
brochure In this unit, we were asked to make an assignment which is the application of the elements and principles of Visual Communication. I made a z-fold brochure and a website for an imaginary dog shelter. In this specific project, I was in a constant debate with myself about how good design should not always be pretty. Looking back at it now, I am understanding, it’s incorrect to conclude that beautiful designs are functionally correct.
history of Visual Communication Humans show territorial behaviour but in a slightly sophisticated manner. From country level where the government marks it’s borders and armies to guard it, scaled down to regions, cities, localities, houses. Houses have fencing around them to let the surroundings know they own it. Just like the dogs pee to mark their territory humans have the habit to border their stuff. Ancient humans started marking their territories as civilisation flourished. The agricultural land, hunting space, places for work, recreation etc. But ancient men had less selfish motives than present humans. Land was a sacred space for early man and disrespecting the land was a sin, they worshipped their places, thankful for the abundant supply for their daily lives. I wonder if the sanity left human bodies as they evolved, for we clearly have taken everything provided to us for granted. Another way of showing ownership is how humans of similar tribes had matching tattoos. A way of mark making/symbols used for communication. When I compared how I display my ownership on things or people I would like to call my own. I thought of documenting the thoughts I had while shifting from my hometown to this place. It is the very first time I am moving out of a place I have been living for past 22 years and calling it my own. Every object has a memory to it, followed by the emotional bias towards each of them. The behaviour is called as the endowment effect where in a human emotionally attaches themselves to an object, giving it value beyond the objective value. This is my way of representation for the assignment, talking about ownership and territoriality. It is a GIF about leaving my own space and living in a new space trying it make it my own.
Linocut Linocut made during print workshop. I chose one of my drawings from my sketchbook. This workshop gave me the most liberating experience and the importance that the process after designing is of utmost importance, it can either make or break your output.
retrospect In the first month I feared to even start a project, questioning my potential to complete leave alone quality work. These assignments have fairly improved my confidence to go through the process of any project. It has helped me to understand myself and my work much better. Most of my work revolves around my observations and experiences. I use the everyday routine as my inspiration and try to see it with different eyes when putting it on my paper. I fear that I am not able to imagine the most wackiest characters or think too abstract, but I feel too overwhelmed when I see things around me and want to draw it all in my way. Looking at all the work in past five months, I realise there is specific theme in my work which is personal. This is setting some kind of boundaries for me and restricting it. It is not a problem, these personal narratives still remain my biggest interests, but I need to expand the ways of narrating it and making it more interdisciplinary, allowing more learning experiences.Morever I feel grateful I was able to understand and expect a much deeper understanding and exploration in coming semester.
