St Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) is a major academic teaching hospital providing front line acute, chronic and emergency care to the South Dublin community. One of Ireland’s premier healthcare centres, it offers more than forty medical specialties and is a national/regional referral centre for many conditions.

It has 479 in-patient beds, incorporating 7-day, 5-day and day care options and its emergency medicine department is one of four principal A&E centres serving the greater Dublin area.

SVUH is home to the national centre for liver transplantation and is the national centre for pancreatic cancer surgery.

In collaboration with the National Cancer Control Programme, the hospital has created a Rapid Access Clinic for patients with a suspected diagnosis of lung cancer, led by Prof Michael Keane, UCD Dean of Medicine. SVUH has internationally renowned expertise in respiratory medicine and hosts a major national care centre for adults with cystic fibrosis. The hospital has a strong tradition in rheumatology research and in the care of inflammatory disease.

Medicine/ Surgery Rotation

We offer a 4 or 6 week rotation in either Surgery or Medicine, which follows the UCD curriculum.

Surgery

Supporting this learning environment will be a series of lectures, small group tutorials, ward and outpatient teaching. Students will be required to follow patients through their clinical pathway, including participation in surgery as appropriate. Specialities include Breast, Endocrinology, Plastics, Orthopedics, Correctoral, Cardio-thoracic, General Surgery, General Gastro, Urology or Hepatobiliary.

Medicine

Through a variety of teaching methods including clinical attachments, lectures and instruction in data interpretation students will enhance their clinical reasoning, clinical decision-making and clinical management skills of common medical conditions. Areas covered include Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, and Radiology.

Mater Misericordiae University Hospital

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is one of Ireland’s largest, busiest and most distinguished acute academic teaching hospitals. It plays a vital role in the provision of adult acute carae services serving Dublin’s north inner city as well as delivering national specialist and tertiary referral for the country.

The hospital has approximately 600 beds including day beds and serves an immediate population in its local catchment area of approximately 185,000. It is the national centre for: Cardiac surgery Heart and Lung Transplantation Extra Corporeal Life Support (ECLS) Spinal Injuries Pulmonary hypertension National Isolation Unit Bone Anchored Hearing Aid.

For our medical students, the hospital is a primary location for their clinical education and training in medicine and surgery as well as for medical internship, basic medical and subsequent higher specialist training. Approximately 120 students undertake their primary clinical training at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, rotating through medical and surgical specialties at the hospital and elsewhere within our clinical training network.

Children’s University Hospital, Temple St is part of an organisation called Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), which provides paediatric services in Dublin across four locations in Dublin. CHI at Temple Street is an acute national paediatric hospital. Major specialities at CHI at Temple Street today include neonatal and paediatric surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, orthopaedics, ENT and plastic surgery. The national centre for paediatric ophthalmology, the National Paediatric Craniofacial Centre (NPCC), the national airways management centre, the national meningococcal laboratory, the National Centre for Inherited Metabolic Disorders (NCIMD), the National Newborn Screening Service (NNSS) and the Irish Meningitis and Sepsis Reference Laboratory (IMSRL) are also based at CHI at Temple Street.

CHI at Temple Street cares for 150,000 children per year including over 45,000 who attend the Emergency Department (ED). A staff of 90 Consultant and over 950 nursing, HSCPs (Health and Social Care Professionals) and other staff provide this care.

Clinical Elective in Paediatrics

We offer visiting students a 4 week elective in paediatrics. During this elective, students will have opportunities to provide paediatric care in a variety of clinical environments which may include inpatient ward services, outpatient primary care & specialty clinics and the paediatric emergency departmner. Students will be exposed to a number of clinical experiences such as neonatal and paediatric surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, orthopaedics, ENT and plastic surgery. Students will learn how to provide competent, effective, and preventive care for children under appropriate supervision. Students should have completed their core clerkship in Paediatrics prior to undertaking this elective.

CHI at Temple Street

National Maternity Hospital, Holles St

The National Maternity Hospital (NMH) is one of the largest maternity hospitals in Ireland, incorporating Maternity, Gynaecology, Neonatology, Community Midwifery Services, Anaesthetics, Fetal Medicine, Fertility, Pathology, Radiology, Maternal Medicine, Perinatal Mental Health, National Neonatal Transfer Service and Urogynaecology. The Hospital provides maternity care for over 8,000 women who give birth annually and has developed its clinical services over the years to become a major tertiary referral centre for the specialties of obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology.

In line with the National Maternity Strategy, there are care pathways which meet the needs of women, including supportive care and community midwifery care, to specialist pathways for women who require care for high risk pregnancy. More than 1,500 babies are admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit

annually which is recognised as a national referral centre for complicated pregnancies, premature babies, and sick infants.

One of the hospital’s main sub-specialities is the treatment of Gynaecological cancer. The Colposcopy service is funded by the National Cancer Screening Service and is one of the largest units in Europe for such a purpose. Urogynaecology and Ambulatory Gynaecology services are expanding annually to meet the growing needs for women’s health services in Ireland.

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Rotation

The National Maternity Hospital serves as a key location for our teaching in obstetrics and gynaecology during the final or penultimate years of our medicine degree programme.

We offer visiting students a 4 week clinical elective placement. Students will encounter both commonplace and unusual problems of pregnancy and you’ll also see many different methods of investigating and treating gynaecological complaints. Student will participate in patient care in a responsible role under appropriate supervision.

Students should have completed their core obstetrics and gynaecology rotation prior to undertaking this placement.

Wexford General Hospital

Wexford General Hospital is an Acute General

Hospital providing services to the surrounding communities. The hospital has 280-beds providing Inpatient, Outpatient, Day Care, Outreach and Emergency Services.

National Rehabilitation Hospital

The National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) is a 120 bed centre that provides Complex Specialist Rehabilitation services to patients who, as a result of an accident, illness or Injury, have acquired a physical or cognitive disability and require a specialist programme of rehabilitation.

Students can apply for a 4 week elective with one of the below teams:

• Acquired brain injury and stroke specialty

• Spinal cord system of care

• Prosthetics, orthotics and limb absence

• Paediatric family centred rehabilitation

Family Medicine Rotation

UCD School of Medicine is affiliated with a network of general practices across Ireland. We offer our visiting students the opportunity to rotate with a general practitioner. In Ireland the GP plays a central role in the healthcare system and is often the first medical advice a person seeks when they feel unwell. GPs provide a broad service to their patients on all health issues, and may refer patients to see specialists or hospital consultants if more specific investigation is required. GPs play a central role in the health of our community, caring for people from birth and childhood, through to older age and end of life care. We offer students a 4 week rotation with one of our affiliated GPs.

Satellite Hospitals

UCD’s clinical teaching network expands to outside of our main teaching hospitals in Dublin. UCD is affiliated with Wexford General Hospital, Co. Wexford, Mullingar General Co. Westmeath, Portlaoise Co. Laois and Tullamore, Co. Offaly. These hospitals provide students with a range of clinical experience from Inpatient, Outpatient, Day Care, Outreach and Emergency Service and maternity services.
