MC-802 Wireless WallPlate Field Evaluation
The Motorola MC-802 Wireless WallPlate is designed for multi-tenant buildings such as hotels, healthcare, apartments, and dormitory housing. The principal goal is to leverage the in-building telephone wiring to deploy Ethernet and wireless LAN networks without the effort and expense of re-wiring with structured cabling. MC802 is part of the T3 PowerBroadband product family. The T3 system combines proven VDSL with patented Adaptive Line Power to produce a truly unique, high value product. Although designed primarily for hotels, the T3 PowerBroadband system can be deployed in many multi-tenant applications. When evaluating the T3 PowerBroadband system with the MC-802 Wireless WallPlate, there are three primary features that can be demonstrated:
Better wireless LAN Hotel architecture consists of individual rooms with high RF attenuation walls, firewalls, firedoors, and reflective surfaces. These structural elements can cause havoc when attempting to survey and install a traditional enterprise AP from the hotel hallway. The MC-802 WallPlate, by contrast, is installed in the guest room – right where the guest is located. The 14dBm transmitter and high-gain custom designed antenna allow the RF signals to penetrate several rooms.
Tamper-proof, fast installation When installed in the hotel guest room, it is important that the wireless AP hide “in plain sight”. The MC-802 is not marked as a WAP, and is designed to convert a standard 70mm x 114mm RJ11 telephone jack into an Ethernet and Wireless wall plate.
Adaptive Line Power Using Adaptive Line Power, the WallPlate can be line powered over the telephone wires, up to 300m. Combined with the form factor, Adaptive Line Power truly hides the WallPlate AP. Adaptive Line Power shares an advantage with PoE – the device can be rebooted by disabling and re-enabling line power at the source. This lowers maintenance visits and eases diagnostics. This application note will provide site survey and installation guidance. Better Wireless LAN The goal of a wireless LAN site survey is to measure the RF penetration through the building architecture, and identify the location and method of installation. With the Wireless WallPlate and Adaptive Line Power, every room is a potential installation site. Thus, the site survey can be simplified greatly to determine the average room-to-WP density.
Si t e S u r v e y Activities: Load site survey code onto a WallPlate Survey one room group
Load Site Survey code Obtain the site survey code from Motorola support. Email: pbn.support@motorola.com. The code comes with instructions to load the Site Survey code onto a T3 Switch; then push it to the WallPlate. Any Wireless WallPlate can be converted into a site survey WallPlate. Since each WallPlate stores two images, you can easily switch back to production mode.
Power the WallPlate using a 12VDC regulated power supply Site Survey code allows the WallPlate to operate without a connected T3 Switch. When running the site survey code, the WallPlate has this hard-coded configuration: Transmit level 14dBm Channel 1 SSID = “Motorola-survey� Ethernet ports disabled
Install the survey WallPlate in one room It is generally best to locate the WallPlate on the wall where it will be installed. Install the power adapter. After about 2 minutes, the WP will begin transmitting the SSID. Be certain to close the doors when doing the site surveys. Signals can bounce through the hallway and give inaccurate readings.

Measure the Received signal level in each adjacent room Find the room where the signal level is -90dBm. Then, add one extra room. This is the ROOMto-WP density for the entire property. In this example, the -90dBm room is the fifth room. Thus, the density will be one AP in every 5 rooms. You could also use 6 rooms without trouble. This will provide a -72dBm signal or better in each room of the hotel with little co-channel interference.

C o - C h a n n el I n t er fe r en c e With the WP installed in the site survey room, continue measuring RF signal strength in rooms across the hall on the same floor, and vertically in rooms on other floors. Note the rooms where the signal level drops to -90dBm or lower. Based on the above survey, it can be demonstrated that the WPs installed in room 100 and 117 on Channel 1 will not interfere. Rooms 100 and 107 are likely within the carrier detect range; but they are on non-overlapping channels. 5 rooms

The recommended procedure is to begin replacing cross connects at the room termination block, moving back to the PBX termination block. The reason is simple: In most cases, the room termination blocks are marked with room numbers; whereas the PBX block is marked with cable pairs or PBX port IDs.

I n s t all I n - l i n e f il t e r s a n d W a l l P l at e s The Wireless WallPlate has a built-in POTS and Line Power filter for the desk phone. Install an in-line filter on all other phone jacks that will have a phone connected. The terminated filter has a clipped RJ11 connector. This is purposely done to comply with EN60950 requirements. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to lift the tab if attempting to remove the filter. If installing a filter on a bathroom phone, use the Unterminated filter. Remove the bathroom wall plate and terminate the filter in the wall box using wire beans. In-Line Terminated Filter

Install the WallPlate Step 1 Loosen screws on wall plate approximately 6mm (1/4â&#x20AC;?) Attach the Mounting Adapter using the keyhole slots Tighten screws until the bracket is firmly attached, do not over tighten

Enable Line Power Line power should be enabled after the filters and WallPlate have been installed. Line power is safe for use with telephony equipment; but it will ring the phones if the filters are not installed first. Cmd:

M o n i t o r i n g t h e N et w o r k Following the above steps is useful in demonstration or evaluation of the installation and RF signal propagation. During installation, and follow-up evaluation, the system should be monitored to check for network and client status. This can be done via the CLI or webUI.
Monitoring Via the CLI These CLI commands are used to monitor the network and clients: show interface dsl status pay attention to the SNR Margin number. It should always be 6dB or above pay attention to the Quality parameter. This measures bit errors show interface wireless status if the WLANs and radios are configured correctly, the radios operational status will show “up” show wifi client statistics This command displays a top level view of the connected wireless clients. To display details, enter the client MAC address and its connected radio. The webUI is much easier to use when monitoring connected clients
Monitoring Via the webUI The webUI is much easier to use when monitoring wireless client statistics. Monitor Tab – Status This screen displays a color-coded map of every dsl and Ethernet port the dsl line status and remote Ethernet port status. Click the + sign next to the port to display additional line parameters. Pay close attention to these important parameters: Quality Quality is a measure of bit errors. If the quality becomes ‘fair’, check the SNR Margin. SNR Margin Margin is directly related to quality. Margin should always be 6dB or greater. If Quality shows fair, raise the SNR Margin target to 9dB or lower the target line rate in the Interface Tab - DSL

Monitor Tab – Wifi –Radio A radio can be Operationally UP only when it has a valid WLAN configuration and it is manageable by the T3. Use this screen to quickly identify the operational status and parameters of all the radios. If a radio does not appear in this list; check: • for the radio to be enabled o Interface Tab - Wireless • for an IP address from the T3 o Monitor Tab – DHCP • for a valid WLAN configuration o Wifi Tab – Profiles o Wifi Tab – WLAN Monitor Tab – Wifi – Client The highlevel information is presented for all connected wireless clients: • • • •
