Collaborating for Business Growth in Embedded Sector

I

n 2009, there were only 3 key account customers who each contributed $1M sales of Advantech board level products. In 2013, we are expecting 35 key account customers who each purchase more than $1M integrated embedded solutions from Advantech. This remarkable 10 times growth represents the collaborative business growth and partnership between our customers and Advantech over the past 5 years. We are looking forward to growing intelligent systems in the IoT era with transformations on business models and solution offerings.

In the past, customers contacted Advantech mainly for single boards or chassis/system products; however, in the coming Intelligent Systems and IoT era, customers need an even more integrated embedded solution that can better support their applications and make their products more ready for market. The numbers behind our historical sales record show that: according to shipment data in 2012, over 1.5 million embedded boards and systems were shipped to thousands of customers all over the world, while there were also 600,000 pieces of peripheral modules i.e. SQFlash and Wireless, as well as 400,000 pieces of LCD displays shipped out. The data shows that traditional business models are changing too, customers are no longer satisfied with single solution, they are looking for onestop solutions and more embedded integration. In response to this requirement from customers, Advantech has undergone an Embedded Business Model Transformation; migrating from a traditional embedded board and Industrial PC company towards an intelligent systems enabler. Advantech aims to provide integrated solutions ranging from intelligent systems, boards, displays, peripheral modules, and software to design-in services that expand customers' applications and speed up their vertical application development to achieve win-win market success. What’s more, as every device becomes more interconnected and smart, connectivity, manageability, and security become the key essences for intelligent systems. Advantech’s SUSIAccess remote device management software helps transform traditional embedded devices into “intelligent systems” with the three key attributes above. SUSIAccess features remote management functions and incorporates system security from McAfee and back-up & recovery from

Acronis which helps customers centralize monitoring and management of remote embedded devices in real-time. In Embedded WPC 2013, Advantech will unveil the next-generation of SUSIAccess, featuring cloud-based protection, seamless interconnection, and map-view device management, making it easier to manage intelligent systems through your mobile and tablet devices anytime, anywhere, on any device! The advanced SUSIAccess will be cloud and browser based and leverage Google and Baidu maps to help administrators find the location of their devices easier. By 2020, there will be 12.5 billion M2M devices globally, up from 1.3 billion devices today (Hatton 2012). The opportunities are huge, however, the gap between technology and market needs will be there for years. Customers still find it challenging to acquire robust and complete embedded M2M solutions for implementing complex remote communications, and for connecting devices to develop monitoring and remote control applications. So to bridge this gap, Advantech established a new product division called ”Embedded M2M Solutions”. The division will focus on providing ready-to-use embedded M2M solutions by integrating Advantech’s current embedded platforms, wireless modules, and remote control software; in collaboration with ecosystem partners. Our solutions include a threelayer structure; from sensor communication, to data collection, to analysis. Advantech provides a wide range of reliable sensor solutions for M2M communication including Bluetooth, Wifi, RFID and GPS modules. Edge computing platforms are also available with WSN and IP gateways. All of Advantech's intelligent devices and systems are serving as computing applications for data analysis. In 2014, the new “Embedded M2M Solutions” will be launched to assist customers in keeping up with IoT trends so they can take the lead.

In revenue terms, IHS projects an annual average growth rate of 10% for industrial PCs with an integrated display, and 15% for fieldbus/Ethernet connected IPCs, for the next five years. Embrace the Era of Intelligent Systems Intelligent Systems are securely managed electronic systems that run a high-level operating system and operate autonomously— typically with the following characteristics: ■ Supports one or more operating systems that can execute native or cloud-based applications, and be capable of Internet browsing, and provide analytics on data collected by the system. ■ Connected to the Internet, and executing native or cloud-based applications with the ability to analyze collected data. ■ One or more programmable processing units, integrated in a system-on-chip (SoC) or as a standalone microprocessor. Seamless Interconnection SUSIAccess can monitor CPU system temperatures, system voltages, hard drives, SQFlash health, and network connectivity. Software monitoring tools can be integrated that help customers by controlling their applications and performing selected actions if something goes wrong. SUSIAccess also integrates a feature which can send device health logs via Clickatell’s SMS technology.

Map-View Management Device Management requires a lots of effort on the administrators behalf who needs to figure out which devices are working properly and which devices are faulty. SUSIAccess leverages Google and Baidu maps to help administrators

find the location of their devices easier. Not only maps, it also provides diagrams of building layouts which have been uploaded to show exactly where a device is. SMS/email communications leverage Clickatell’s SMS gateway service, without cellular modules needed, to send alarm notifications. All this means maintenance personnel can find devices and locate problems much quicker.

Cloud-based Platform SUSIAccess provides a console which displays all connected and monitored devices. An administrator must login in or use remote desktop connection for management of all devices within the SUSIAccess console. With the movement towards the intelligent city, the increasing demand for diverse embedded applications has progressed along many different avenues. More and more smart node devices will be needed in the intelligent city. This represents a huge market opportunity for RISC devices, because power consumption requirements will always be a top priority, and due to the complexities of deployment, small size and stable performance are vital. RISC will be at the bottom layer of the intelligent city network, and the last mile technology to complete. cross interface communication and computing capabilities. Featuring low-power consumption, small size, and a wide operating temperature range, RISC-based products offer a better P/C rate for embedded applications, but there are still many challenges for the customers using RISC solutions. Since the existing eco-system of RISC solutions is not mature and unified, each SoC vendor has its own BSP structure and H/W design architecture; most customers only focus on one SoC vendor solution and it is not easy to change to another SoC vendor for new products. Meanwhile the limited SoC vendor service resources cannot service all of the customers, so un-solved customer issues represent a critical risk to those considering using a RISC solution. But now Advantech offers a shortcut that reduces this impact for customers, because Advantech has close communication and cooperation with ARM and famous SoC vendors such as TI and Freescale. Advantech can offer stable H/W platforms and S/W BSP to its customers, while at the same time embracing SoC and working out suitable solutions for customers’ technical issues. Advantech is a critical connection between the customers and SoC vendors.

When most people decide whether or not to adopt a new technology or product, their first consideration is the performance-to-cost ratio (P/C). This is an important factor, and very easy to understand. But in fact there are many factors that affect customers’ decision-making processes. For example, will this new technology be around for a long time, does it have sufficient user information and support, and is there room for future development? Those hidden elements may not be easily found by customers, but they deeply affect them. If manufacturers cannot address these issues, the new technology or product will ultimately remain a "niche" product and won’t be universally adopted. RISC solutions are not widely applied in the real world, and even though customers may want to adopt the RISC architecture, they are often unable to find sufficient information to conduct a feasibility analysis. The lack of a standard makes customers cautious about using hardware and software with ARM architecture. For these reasons, standardizing ARM products (including hardware, software, and form factor) will not only help to eliminate customer concerns, but will also boost widespread adoption of RISC-based solutions. If RISC-based products can be standardized, customers can avoid future expansion or upgrade issues and won't be tied to just a few suppliers. This will also enable a more efficient use of vendor resources, and speed up the development of RISC-based technology and applications. Now is a critical time for RISCbased solutions, so Advantech is actively participating in the specification definitions for Qseven and SMARC to promote RISC-based industrial standards, and we fully support the drive to create a standard specification under the SGET Association. Qseven and SMARC form factors are gradually spreading out in the market place, targeting applications such as compact mobile devices that require lower power consumption, or that are powered by battery packs.

Advantech has proposed a relatively rugged form factor to overcome this, and that form factor is RTX 2.0. Apart from the mechanical differences, the electrical characteristics allow RTX 2.0 to tackle varying conditions with more flexibility due to its widevoltage, single supply input. This can reduce the complexity of system design because customers no longer need to specify particular voltages for the RISC-based module. Advantech has completed all of the standardized modules such as Qseven, SMARC and RTX. In addition to the RISC-based CPU module, Advantech also provides 3.5” SBC and RISCbased box products; Advantech provides complete solutions that let customers take worry-free advantage of RISC-based products.

Wireless Sensor Network for Information Transmission We should understand the differences between data, information and knowledge before we start designing an intelligent system. Data is factual information and values belonging to a set of items. There are a lot of sensors that can capture real world data into information which transforms those facts into computer language. This is the first step of an intelligent system. For example, sensors for temperature, noise, humidity, liquid flow or CO2 capture nature's data and uses it for environmental or safety applications. Other sensors for ferromagnetic, or infrared light capture data for smart city transportation applications. Advantech provides Wireless

Current 19nm or lower MLC chips only gives less than 3,000 times endurance, SQFlash can reach over 50,000 times with UltraMLC technology. SQRAM – Industrial Grade Memory Modules SQRAM is another own-brand product which is a sorting based memory module for wide temperature platforms and systems. There are 2 different product options of temperature range (-40~85 °C as I-GRD, and -20~70 °C as M-GRD) with DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 to support different application environment demands. Extensible Multiple I/O for Diverse Applications Actions can be simply ON/OFF like lighting or an alarm which can be implemented easily by GPIO. However, some complicated actions might need precision equipment through specific protocols like robot arms, electricity distribution, metro systems or water concentration, all of which might be limited by the I/O on standard platforms. Advantech designed a series miniPCIe form factor modules with the multi-hope connecting interface to enable flexible multiple I/O which helps easier system integration, efficient scheduling, less development resources, and provides system integrators with optimized solutions in a cost-effective way. Currently, we already designed CANBus, LPT, High Speed UART and keep looking for new opportunities to ease system integrators’ difficulties.
