The Impact You’ve Made 2020 Annual Report
Welcome As we start a new year, we have so much to be thankful for.
I especially want to thank you, our community, for your support and commitment to AdventHealth Hendersonville. We can all agree that 2020 has been a year like no other. COVID-19 filled the year with challenges and opportunities unlike any we have ever experienced. Despite the challenging year, we were blessed by the compassionate care and support from our community in the forms of notes of encouragement for our care teams, food to feed our physicians and nurses, and financial support to help us continue to provide safe, exceptional care to families, friends and neighbors in Western North Carolina and the surrounding region. As a faith-based organization, our mission is Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. This mission allows us to provide whole-person care – body, mind and spirit – to the people entrusting us with their health and wellness. I love our mission. It is a high calling and the reason I feel honored and blessed to work for AdventHealth. I have been with AdventHealth Hendersonville since May 2020. However, I have been with the organization for more than 18 years, working in various accounting roles. Most recently, I served as the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the AdventHealth Southeast Region and for two hospitals in Georgia. I also served on the AdventHealth Hendersonville Board of Directors and was Chairman of the AdventHealth Hendersonville Finance Committee for nearly six years. My tenure on the board for Hendersonville provided me with a strong knowledge of our local leadership, care teams and community. My wife, Amanda, and our two sons, Noah and Jacob, are excited to now call Western North Carolina home. I love serving this community and welcome the opportunity to meet you. Our Foundation team will be hosting “Coffee with Cory” throughout the coming year. If you would like to join one of the sessions to virtually meet me and learn more about what AdventHealth Hendersonville is doing, please reach out to the AdventHealth Hendersonville Foundation to reserve a spot on one of our monthly calls. Thank you for your commitment to our mission and the profound impact you make on our organization. With your support, we can look forward to a year of health and hope by providing people the care they need, when and where they need it. Thank you for making a difference. Sincerely,
Cory Reeves President and CEO AdventHealth Hendersonville

Giving back through AdventHealth gives me an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many.

AdventHealth Team Members Give Back Each year, team members of AdventHealth Hendersonville are invited to join our long-standing legacy of philanthropy by joining the 1910 Society. Through generous contributions, team members support vital programs that further our mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ.
The ASK Fund extends financial support to AdventHealth team members in crisis. In addition, employee contributions expanded access to behavioral health services, provided nurses with resources to further their education, and enabled a faster and more comfortable experience for patients with our new 512-slice CT scanner.
As a member of the 1910 Society, team members have many options to choose from when deciding where to designate dollars – and each opportunity has a significant impact on our ability to provide whole-person care. This year, our team members contributed more than $45,000 through this program! This kind of support strengthens programs and services at AdventHealth Hendersonville, such as our Associates Sharing Kindness (ASK) Fund. 3
AdventHealth is grateful for the community support we have received throughout this challenging year. CHARLES HOPPE, LOCAL TEEN, DELIVERS THANK-YOU GIFTS TO ADVENTHEALTH ER DOCTORS AND NURSES In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a local teenager reached out to AdventHealth Hendersonville to offer a gift to encourage and show his appreciation for the emergency care team. Charles Hoppe is 13 years old and participates in the Congressional Award Leadership Program. When the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact our region, he decided to make the AdventHealth emergency team the focus of his Voluntary Public Service goal in this
program. Charles put together bags with snacks and a special letter of encouragement for the doctors and nurses. In that letter he shared: “I have been reading about COVID-19 and I know that doctors and nurses are at high risk. Thank you for putting your lives on the line for our community. In an effort to help, my family and I have self-isolated in order to help suppress the spread of the virus. You go to work for us every day, so we are staying home for you.”
Thank you, Charles, for providing encouragement to our team.

AdventHealth Volunteer Prepares More Than 15,000 COVID-19 Test Kits For her work during the COVID-19 pandemic, AdventHealth volunteer Marie McKinley was recognized on WLOS for their Heroes Salute. Marie has been volunteering for AdventHealth Hendersonville for three years. She says it keeps her busy and gives her something to do now that she’s retired. Serving is in Marie’s blood. She served in Vietnam in the Navy in the 1960s, and after her Navy career, she worked as an accountant. When the pandemic hit, in addition to her volunteer hours at the hospital gift shop, AdventHealth had another very important job for her. Marie began putting COVID-19 test collection kits together. Her task was to put a label on a test tube and fill the tube with pre-measured saline. Then, she put the 20 saline-filled tubes along with 20 sticks into a bag. AdventHealth uses these grab-and-go kits to test patients at its drive up testing site. Between March and November 2020, Marie prepared more than 15,000 of these kits!
Thank you, Marie, for your selfless service. 5

Since 2008, Kenmure Fights Cancer has raised more than $527,000 for cancer programs at AdventHealth Hendersonville and Pardee UNC Health. The group hosts year-round fundraising events to support its mission “to remember those we have lost to cancer, honor those who have survived the battle and support those who are struggling today against the terrible disease.”
Kenmure Fights Cancer Support Enables Faster Diagnosis of AdventHealth Cancer Patients Kenmure Fights Cancer continues its commitment to supporting cancer care at AdventHealth Hendersonville by donating $37,500.18 to the AdventHealth Foundation this year. This year’s donation from Kenmure Fights Cancer is designated for the purchase of a new slide stainer to enable more efficient cancer diagnosis for patients of AdventHealth. A slide stainer assists a pathologist with diagnosing and staging a mass, which indicates the treatment plan for a patient. Patients experience a shorter wait time for results with more efficient technology. “Their generosity this year means we will have new technology to enhance the workflow for the pathology and diagnosis process,” says Director of Oncology Services, Lisa Gundersen, BSN, RN, OCN, CMSRN. “That means faster results to our doctors, faster answers for our patients, and, if it is cancer, faster activation of a treatment plan.”
A Grateful Patient We have some longtime friends of the AdventHealth Hendersonville Foundation and their passion for giving back stems from a myriad of factors. They describe their experience at AdventHealth as incredible with compassionate care. The care they have received has made a profound impact on their decision to give back to AdventHealth Hendersonville. As most can relate, 2020 was anything but an ordinary year. In addition to the impact COVID-19 brought, she had to deal with mounting health concerns.
Her husband recently told the Foundation team: “ We were both extremely appreciative of how fast AdventHealth responded when my wife had shingles in her ear and mouth. We were desperate and this quick response took tremendous pressure off. Your hospital and physician staff are the friendliest and most professional people we have ever run into.”

A New Women’s Giving Society
The isolation resulting from the pandemic enabled the Foundation team to think of innovative ways to keep donors engaged and connected. After speaking with several women, both donors and friends, we realized they still wanted to make a difference and desired to feel a sense of belonging. They were passionate about collective giving for one cause that would create a tremendous impact. Through discussions in a virtual focus group, the members of HERizons decided on a mission: to help women feel whole. They focused on determining which hospital initiative HERizons could impact the most. HERizons members rallied in their inaugural year to support the needs of behavioral health patients served by the women’s unit at AdventHealth Hendersonville. The generosity of this group of remarkable women enabled the hospital to purchase 24 privacy doors for the behavioral health unit. AdventHealth completed the final renovation phase to the unit in November 2020, doubling the unit size from 12 beds to 24 beds. Member Kerry Griffin expresses: “I am excited to be the first member of a group of women that have passion for their community, women’s health issues and friendship. In the first few months of HERizons, it is obvious this is a group that will move mountains!” Debra Compton details her calling to join as follows: “I think when God places an opportunity in our path, He wants and expects us to do what we can. Seeing ordinary people facing desperate situations – loss of family members, loss of jobs and homes, desperate to feed their families – makes you realize it could happen to anyone.”

A Message from the Director Are you as happy as I am to see a new year begin?
The events of 2020 have taken a toll on all of us. We have felt it in different ways, ranging from anxieties about the virus to financial burdens to the emotional pain of missing out on many of our cherished traditions. However, every year, I like to give thanks for the blessings that arrived throughout the year. First, I am grateful for all of our front line caregivers – our nurses, doctors, first responders, teachers and other essential staff – who have worked long hours to keep us safe, tend to our medical needs, stock our grocery store shelves and deliver food to the elderly during the pandemic. Second, the challenges of this year have reminded me to embrace the opportunity to pause and appreciate the simpler things in life. Before the pandemic, many of us – including me – were in constant motion: always in a hurry to get to the next destination. With routines slowed down, we have found time to pause and be grateful for simple things we may have taken for granted before, like spending time with family and friends, buying groceries or getting a haircut. Third, I am thankful for each of you. Thank you for encouraging our team members with your kind letters, gifts of food and generous contributions. On behalf of the entire Foundation team, thank you for the difference you have made with your support of AdventHealth in 2020. We are thankful for the people in our community, like you, who have shown kindness and compassion in many ways and believed in our mission. Thank you for being part of our 2020 blessings. We wish you a wonderful 2021! Many Thanks,
Sherri Holbert Director AdventHealth Hendersonville Foundation 15
