Obituaries

COONEY, George James, born 16.1.1938 in Nambour, Qld; died 2.7.22 in Buderim. On 2.1.1961 he married Lorna. George is survived by his wife (Nambour); sons, Leon and Jenny (Glasshouse Mountains) and David and Katie (Nambour); grandchildren, Benjamin, Kristy, Caitlyn, Paul and Megan; and great-grandchildren, Micah, Toby, Charli and Ollie. George exemplified what it means to live as a follower of Christ. People were touched by his kind Christian manner, whether it was during his many years working as a grader operator or serving in various capacities in the Church. George loved the Lord and was faithful until the end, looking forward to seeing his Saviour.

Justin Lawman, Scott Wareham

GEELAN, Robert Arthur, born 18.1.1938 in Hornsby, NSW; died 10.8.22 in Wyong Hospital, NSW. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jennifer, in 1991 and his son Jeffrey in 1991. In 1992 he married Christine Bradshaw. He is survived by Christine; children, David and Sue (Sydney), Paul and Vanessa (Cameron Park), Kathy (Brisbane, Qld), Dale and Danielle Bradshaw-Geelan (Oberon, NSW) and Andrew and Janna Cleverdon (Cooranbong); 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In 1956 Bob commenced a lengthy 43 years of service with the Sanitarium Health Food Company. He was a loving, kind, generous man and a person of integrity. Bob served as a leader for the local fire service and was much involved in church leadership. Strong of faith, he now rests in peace awaiting the coming of Jesus.

LAWSON, Frances Eloyce (nee Brennan), born 13.1.1936 in Launceston, Tas; died 5.9.22 in Canberra, ACT. She was predeceased by her husband Pastor Neil Lawson. Frances is survived by her children, Shelley, and Andrew and wife Sonya; and grandchildren, Brayden, Kaitlan, Zac, Jade, Christopher, Amy, Layla, Zack and Savannah. Pastor Neil and Frances lived and served across New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria. Frances was adored by many and will be remembered for her love for God, her compassionate nature and her willingness to serve others.

LEGGEREIT, Reinhold (Ron) Karl Hans, born 3.11.1929 in Oberhausen, Germany; died 16.8.22 in Bayside Nursing Home, Bonnells Bay, NSW. In 1951 he married Anna Chassee in Germany. She predeceased him in 1960. In 1973 he married Stella Johnson in the Parramatta church, Sydney, NSW. He is survived by his children, Harold and Jenny (Qld), Alfred and Annette (Qld), Suzie and Bob Gallagher (Qld), Hans and Tarryn (NSW) and Amanda (NSW); 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Following his work for Holden, Ron was employed by the SHF for several years. He loved God and his family and took every opportunity to share his faith in Jesus. Ron rests in peace awaiting the call of his Saviour.

Roger Nixon

MALYCHA, Lillian Gwendolene (nee Roberts), born 6.10.1945 in Kidsgrove, England; died 25.5.22 in Berri Hospital, SA. On 13.6.1965 she married Kevin at Stirling. Lillian is survived by her husband (Renmark); children, Jody and MarkPettet (Mildura), Todd and Miki (Renmark) and Bradley (Melbourne, Vic); and grandchildren, Madelyn and Kaine, and Georgia and Minnie. Rest in peace Lillian until our Lord returns and gathers us together once again.

MATTHEWS, Joyce Elizabeth (nee Sippel), born 18.3.1929 in Attunga, NSW; died 7.9.22 in Laurieton. She was married to George, who predeceased her in 2012. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Kay Tiller (Tamworth); sons, Perry (Berkeley Vale) and Robert Pearce (Northern Beaches); four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Ted Sippel and Norm Sippel; and sister, Doreen Barr. Joyce was active in her community and a foundation member of the Camden Haven church.

Justin Boyd, David Price

NELISI, Fanovaka (Vaka), born 23.12.1953; died 13.8.22 in Auckland, NZ. He is survived by his wife, Mele (Auckland); and sons, Baird (Sydney, NSW), George (Gold Coast, Qld), Frank (Hong Kong) and Christopher (Auckland, NZ). Vaka was a faithful servant and leader of the Auckland Niuean church for more than 30 years. He passed away peacefully with his family around him and now rests in Jesus awaiting resurrection day.

Ben Timothy, Keni Nelisi

PAGE, David Alfred, born 11.9.1929 in Armidale, NSW; died 21.8.22 in Cooranbong. He was predeceased by his first wife, Maureen. He was also predeceased by his sons Chris and Phillip. He later married Rowena (also known as Carmel). David is survived by his wife (Cooranbong); and son, David (Nowra). David was a man of faith who made the most of what he had. He flew with Adventist Aviation into New Guinea. As a steadfast follower of Jesus, he brought his knowledge and skills to serve the church. He even developed a system to broadcast services from Memorial church into the homes of people in the area who couldn’t attend.

SHANNON, Bernice (nee Freitag), born 24.8.1935 in Perth, WA; died 27.7.22 in Redcliffe Aged Care Home, Perth. She was predeceased by her husband, Aubrey in 2001. Bernice is survived by her children, Debbie and Dale. Bernice was a gentle, unassuming follower of Jesus, who loved to read her Bible. She died in Jesus and awaits His soon return.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Pastoral Services Leader – Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing Group

With the recent appointment of Pr Gilbert Cangy to the newly formed position of Director of the Discipleship and Evangelism Institute at Avondale University the position of Pastoral Services Manager for the Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing Group has become available. We are seeking expressions of interest for this role from suitable candidates. The Pastoral Service Manager is the leader of our Chaplaincy team and has primary oversight of the Chaplaincy team and program for around 1,800 staff across all our Group entities around the world. Our core Sanitarium Health Food entities, which include 8 sites across Australia and New Zealand, are the major focus through working collaboratively with the team of two Chaplains, one in Australia and one in New Zealand, that provide direct on the ground support and report into this role. In addition to domestic oversight this role is also responsible for the development and implementation of contextualised and consistent Chaplaincy programs for our international entities in the USA, UK, India and China.

Our existing Pastoral Services Program includes a number of components. Life Matters – A daily time of reflection on life purpose and meaning, annual thanksgiving programs and various internal team programs and other corporate events. Care Matters – Specific point of need support provided to individuals, teams and workgroups in the work environment Family Matters – A dedicated family support program, for example vacation care programs Prayer Matters – our intercessory prayer program across our business and teams.

The individual must have significant Pastoral background and experience and be a Commissioned/Ordained Minister of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The right individual must have strong strategic thinking, planning and organisational skills. People and interpersonal skills are critical, as is strong communication ability and demonstrated constructive behaviours. Staff management experience is preferable. This role will also liaise closely with the People and Culture team and the Communications team.

The role has a dual direct reporting line to the Executive General Manger Sanitarium Australia and New Zealand and to the Chief Executive Officer.

Location for the role is the Sanitarium Berkley Vale Head Office, Central Coast Australia. An ability to travel is important.
