In Loving memory of....
Memories Are Everything... Wanderlust Founder's Story What would you do if your parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer's simultaneously? My parents were a tight team, strong-minded, and independent. Mom was forever the homemaker and dad an honorable, sharp-as-a-tack career soldier. They inspired me and my brothers, always wanting us to follow our hearts, live life to the fullest, live adventurously. They did not know they had Alzheimer's. However, their diagnosis was a shock and caught my family off guard. It didn’t sink until the full horror of watching the decline of both loved ones and this cruel, insidious disease actually entailed. They experienced a simultaneous decline, hand in hand, just like they’d faced everything else in life. In spite of their continued decline, they yearned to live on their own terms and refused to give up. Fast forward ten years, bedridden lying next to each other, they had trouble feeding themselves and doing daily activities. They no longer recognized or remembered anyone or anything they did and had significant difficulty forming words or creating sentences. Their mind continued to be devastated. Not only was their memory gone, but almost all of their identity. The only blessing was that they did not understand what was happening to them. By mid-2020, my mom's dementia condition had progressed to the final stage where her bodily functions were no longer under her control. Later that year, she passed away on her 83rd birthday! Dad continued a valiant battle but was short-lived. Barely a year later, he too succumbed to the inevitable. My parents loved my work and supported my travel adventures. There is no better way to keep their legacy alive than to dedicate a part of my work to help those responsible for Alzheimer's in their relentless pursuit to find a cure and support the living. My belief is if we live an active life fully engaged, we can do amazing things as we age. I hope you are as excited about our new Sri Lanka adventure as I am. It is for those who advocate for healthy living. I hope this endeavor will raise the awareness of Alzheimer's disease in Canada, Sri Lanka, and around the world, and more importantly, help support the ongoing work. So, let's get out there.

From Our Past Travelers ... " I'd always wanted to visit Sri Lanka, and what better way to do it in support of the local people who have suffered a lot after the 2004 tsunami. I went to Sri Lanka with the Wanderlust founder to help with the rebuilding effort. The trip was amazing and the feeling of personal achievement was enormous. Not just from completing the trip, but because I knew not only my enjoyment, it would somewhat help a good cause. " -Prof. Patrick Demeyere Sudbury,Ontario, Canada " Priyantha and his team has helped me fulfill one of my lifelong dreams to visit Sri Lanka as part of his charity challenge trek. We saw a wonderful country and met its friendly people. Above all, he made sure that I met my foster child Ramya and her family in person. An unforgettable day in my life. - JH Toronto, Ontario, Canada
" Sri Lanka trip was well organized and professionally run. They had excellent rapport with the local NGO’s and obvious respect and adoration. Trip transition from “adventure mode” to “the charity mode” was effortless. - SM Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada

Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. If you require any additional information or advice, contact Wanderlust Adventures on (905) 783-3384 or email: info@wanderlustadventures.ca Am I the right person to take part in this adventure challenge? If you want to have an adventure that requires you to test yourself both mentally, spiritually, and physically while supporting and spreading the awareness of Alzheimer's disease and its work in Sri Lanka and the rest of the world, then you're just the right person to take part in this adventure challenge. The only stipulation is that you must be within the age group specified and you are willing to complete a medical questionnaire that discloses any relevant medical conditions. Am I fit enough? Our challenge is not physically demanding. However, you will be 'removed' from your comfort zone, sharing and enjoying experiences with people and cultures you don't know. You may at times face difficult terrains and weather. To compensate for this, you will be staying at some of the finest lodging available in Sri Lanka. We recommend that you prepare yourself by adding walks, running or cycle rides to your daily workouts. You don't have to run marathons though! These events are essentially designed as busy, active adventure experiences rather than races or extreme sports but will be a challenge for some. Once on it, people tend to fall in with those with a similar level of fitness. Wanderlust Adventures will help you prepare for the adventure with an ideal training regimen. Do I need a specialist kit? Once you register, Wanderlust Adventures will send you a comprehensive list of gear and clothing required for the challenge, all of which are available with leading stores like MEC among others. Do I have to carry my own stuff? You will not have to carry the majority of your belongings - they will be carried by a support vehicle. You may have to carry a small day pack with water, medicines, personal supplies, sun protection, a camera, and the rain gear How many people take part in a challenge? Minimum 8/Maximum 20. We never run a departure with more than 20 people. This allows us to provide personal attention to everyone and take care of individual needs. People from all backgrounds take part in these challenges, and we encourage a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Many people find that shared experience encourages lasting friendships. What is the accommodation like? We offer clean, safe, and comfortable accommodation in Sri Lanka. We do not use international chains but support local Inns, family-run eco-lodges, nature-friendly tented camping, wherever possible to add to the experience of the region and country you are traveling.
13
Can my group join a challenge? If you have a group of a minimum of 8 friends, family, and colleagues who would like to travel together, we can run a private departure just for you. Every participant must meet all the challenge conditions. Upon request, Wanderlust Adventures can custom design a Sri Lanka adventure. After all, Sri Lanka is our founder's first home and there is no better satisfaction for everyone at Wanderlust Adventures than promoting trips to Sri Lanka. What is the Booking Deposit for? The deposit of $250 per person covers non-refundable payments to hold space on a trip and all non-travelrelated costs incurred by Wanderlust Adventures. The deposit payment will be deducted from your final invoice for the challenge. What is included and not included in the adventure challenge? Wanderlust Adventures makes all land arrangements for your challenge. Your accommodation, most meals (see itinerary), guides, all in-country travel, sightseeing, excursions, permits, entry tickets, and accompanying Canadian trip leader for all group sizes of 8 and above are included in the trip cost. However, you will need to cover the cost of your return international air travel from/to your home city, visas, travel insurance, spending money, tips for local guides, all beverages during meals, and personal expenses. Canadian trip leader is not included for group sizes of 4-7. Do I need medical, trip cancellation, and emergency evacuation insurance? You need to arrange a personal travel insurance policy that covers you for health, accidents, loss of your luggage and belongings, and emergency repatriation. You will be asked to provide proof of your insurance prior to travel. Wanderlust Adventures also sells insurance packages and can provide appropriate cover for you at competitive premiums. What happens to my donation to Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation? Your donation will be passed on to Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation office in person during your visit to Sri Lanka, so that you see first-hand where your funds are spent. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer official tax receipts since we are merely a travel company and you are donating funds to an overseas charity. An official receipt from Lanka Alzheimer's foundation will be provided. Can I stay on when I have completed the challenge? Yes, depending upon the availability of your homebound flights. Your request for an extension should be made in writing at least 10 weeks prior to the departure. There will probably be a fee from the outfitter to cover the cost of making the arrangements. See booking terms and conditions. Sri Lanka Adventure Challenge 2022/3

Whilst the risk of COVID-19 or any other illnesses on your travels can never be completely eliminated, the risks of transmitting or contracting can be significantly minimized if our travelers are vaccinated against and the right amount of precautions are taken and adhered to.
