Ken and Sandra, who have a rural background working with cattle, moved from the town of Gayndah to Oakey to seize a great business opportunity.

“We bought the business and moved here twenty years ago,” Ken said.

“We’ve seen a lot of kids grow up.”

Ken and Sandra have had other careers, including working as a truck driver and for Queensland Health respectively.

Sandra said over the last two decades, the Oakey Newsagency has had its fair share of luck and has been responsible for selling a handful of winning tickets.

“We’ve sold two first divisions,” she said.

“As well as a few second divisions.

“We’ve even had one fella win about $83,000 from an accidental ticket!

“We inputted it wrong into the system and asked if he still wanted it and he said yes.”

To thank Ken and Sandra for their hard work and to acknowledge this special milestone, Newspower sent them a commemorative plaque to display in store.

Timely reminder about e-scooters

Personal mobility devices or ‘rideables’ are growing in popularity and are considered a cleaner and greener commuting alternative.

Personal mobility devices include a range of devices such as electric scooters, electric skateboards and self-balancing one or twowheeled devices.

However, Police remind users of these devices that they must comply with the road rules whilst riding in public spaces and road related areas in Queensland.

WITH Pat WEIR MP

Late in the afternoon on Friday the 26th of August the Minister for Resources Scott Stewart released the following two-sentence statement: ‘After careful consideration I have approved the mining leases for stage three of the New Acland project. The project also requires an associated water licence from the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water.’ After 15 years campaigning for the development of New Acland Stage 3 the approval for the mining leases has been given. There has never been a justifiable reason given by the Palaszczuk Government for this approval not to be granted and the result of them dragging their political feet has been the loss of 450 jobs, businesses closing and families having to move away from the Oakey community to find employment. All the conditions have been met several times over with the Federal government having approved all aspects of the leases and the associated water licence. It now lies in the hands of the Minister for Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water to grant the associated water licence to get the community up and running again, the mine operational. The people of Oakey have been treated like political pawns and it is time this state government provided some certainty for the Oakey community’s future development, employment opportunities, small businesses and families. I call on Minister Butcher to make this decision sooner rather than later, the decision could be made today. Do not let the people of Oakey hang on to false hope, provide them with a certainty for their future and grant the approval for the associated water licence.
