Our Goulburn Valley
An Introduction
Multi-million dollar investments continue to flow to GV WELCOME to this 60 page special publication – Our Goulburn Valley; Inspiring Innovation & Prosperity… a magazine which showcases many of our region’s success stories, by The Adviser publishing team. Yes, our wonderful Goulburn Valley region has its challenges, particularly on the social, community and security front. However, this is no different to any other regional city or town throughout Australia. The Adviser team takes this special opportunity to highlight many of our incredible success stories, many of which have been built on what our forebears have created. Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley enjoyed a massive migrant injection in the post war years, particularly in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s where many who arrived with very little, carved a living for their families, mostly from the land. It was several of these individuals and their families who seized a moment in time to make a better life, and they did this working from the ground up. Families such as Ahmet, Andreadis, Calandro, Conti, Copulos, Damianopoulos, Gattuso, Guseli, Georgopoulos, Kalafatis, Kreskas, Mangiamelli, Mercuri, Moretto, Pastucci, Prentice, Rachele, Radevski, Rendeski, Retzos, Sali, Sofra, Spadaro, Tartaglia, Tricarico, Varapodio, Villani, Vracat, Zurcas just to mention a few, have helped shape the Goulburn Valley in to what it is today. There are many more families who have also made a huge contribution to the region. The Guseli family, who are highly recognised
for their pool building craftsmanship, and who are celebrating 40 years in business, were typical of so many hard working migrants who arrived on our shores to make a better life. There are numerous other families such as the Halls, the Turnbulls and Brad and Michelle Smith of Wintersun Fruit, who have expanded considerably with their Pink Lady, Granny Smith and stone fruit operations across the Goulburn Valley and Northeast Victoria. The Furphy family continues to reinvest heavily at its New Dookie and Drummond Roads complex, sending a message of confidence in its engineering business across Australia. Taig Bros, a long standing family business run by John Taig has stood the test of time, through floods and droughts – a positive force for Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley. A standout for exceptional customer service in Shepparton is the Di Conza family of Pat & Tina’s Service Station fame, who is one of the very few service stations offering a prestige drivethrough service to motorists in the country. These family businesses – the backbone of the Australian economy - are synonymous with so many success stories that define the Goulburn Valley today. There are of course many more families not mentioned who have arrived on our shores from many more parts of the world - and many longstanding local families - who have helped create Shepparton and our wonderful region. There are literally hundreds of thriving enterprises in the Goulburn Valley, who, collectively, are investing and reinvesting
hundreds of millions of dollars in our region. Take a moment to reflect on the likes of the Copulos Group of Companies who are behind the scenes investing millions of dollars in a wide range of enterprises right here in Shepparton. Businesses such as MC Pipes, are growing at a strong rate - exceeding expectations - and planning for further expansion in the coming two years. The Parklake Hotel is getting a big makeover and is currently being upgraded and expanded to three levels with undercover car parking and more than 70 rooms. Quest Apartments is a relatively new acquisition for the family. Riverside Plaza, which is home to the newly located Harvey Norman store and the new Fun City complex, is attracting people from all over Northern Victoria and Southern NSW. In fact, Fun City is one of the largest family entertainment venues in regional Australia, right here in Shepparton. Many other large investments that are underway or are near completion are: SPC’s $100M upgrade as part of the company’s Program 100. The new $30M tomato line was commissioned earlier this year. “It is a world class production facility and is an investment that will help transform our company into a modern food business,” SPC general manager manufacturing, Simon Taylor said. Pactum Dairy along with Fonterra and Bega Cheese, which is part of the Tatura Milk stable of companies, has just won a $108M contract from Woolworths. Tatura Milk continues to grow at a healthy clip reaching 360 million litres of milk processing per annum from its 320 local suppliers. Pental in Shepparton was featured in last year’s Our Goulburn Valley magazine for very good reason. This time we take a look at their new and exciting export program to China. The company, which has moved its entire personal hygiene production line from Port Melbourne to Shepparton in recent years, is Australia’s only manufacturer in its category. Manufacturing household products such as White King, Country Life, Velvet, Softly, Little Lucifer and Jiffy products, Pental employs more than 100 people at its Shepparton plant in Drummond Road. Rubicon Water, also located in Drummond Road, is a world leader in automated irrigation systems. The Geoffrey Thompson Fruit
Packing Company continues to grow with the recent purchase of the former Ardmona canning factory site in Mooroopna. Kreskas Bros Transport continues to grow its operation, working with companies such as Pental, moving product to Melbourne for the wider Australian and new Chinese market. Pental is also a major sponsor of the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry Business Awards. Calandro Engineering is a classic example of a local successful grassroots business which has seen the test of time and celebrates its 50 years in business in Shepparton next year. The family-run business is headed up by Mario Calandro, and to this day continues to manufacture their in-house designed ‘Aussie Hitch’, the only all Australian owned and made five wheel turntable for prime movers. The Calandro family invented it in the 1960s and international markets have been wanting to purchase the patent since. On a smaller scale, however, and as important for the region’s wine growers, Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre represent 35 local wineries at its business in the heart of Shepparton. Brian Hicks Transport is soon to set up their headquarters in Old Dookie Road, Shepparton - another big tick for Shepparton’s thriving trucking and manufacturing economy. Jamestrong Packaging in Kyabram recently launched a $10M ‘red line’ infant formula can production line, giving it a more than 120 million can capability and three-shift capacity, the plant now has a 110 million can annual capacity. Unilever in Tatura is famous for a number of household brands such as Continental Cup a Soup and significantly produces the popular Lipton Ice Tea, exclusively at the Tatura plant. Local insurance industry innovators, Griffiths Goodall Insurance Brokers, recently expanded into their state-of-the-art premises in Welsford Street, Shepparton, again showing confidence in the region. A large amount of their work now is derived from outside the region. We feature many dozens of businesses - in the manufacturing, primary production, fresh produce, irrigation, transport, agriculture, and trades and services sectors - and a whole lot more.

Huge national and international campaign launched SHEPPARTON and the wider Goulburn Valley has recently hit television and airline screens, websites and social media across the country in an unprecedented campaign promoting the great things happening in our region. Created by loca l adver tisi ng agenc y, A lchemy, tagged as Greater Sheppar ton … Great Things Happen Here, it features an excellent series of advertisements including
iconic local businesses such as Furphys, Tatura Milk, Pactum Dairy, Tallis Wines, SPC, Rubicon Water, and Unilever. Sixty Minutes journalist, Charles Wooley, who is the face of the campaign, is our ambassador to showcase the region’s products and services to the world. It’s all about Shepparton’s businesses, services, strong links with agriculture and the
fast growing horticulture sector and vibrant lifestyle. The campaign, which was launched mid this month aims to draw more investment, visitors and new residents to the region. The $600,000 plus campaign is being run as a collaboration between Greater Shepparton City Council and Shepparton Show Me. This is another great example of key
organisations using initiative to attract new business to our region. We look forward to excellent results. To v i e w t h e t e l e v i s i o n a n d w e b advertisements just go to http://greatthings. com.au/ and please share them with your contacts so this important message is spread far and wide.
Growing our city from within government, cultural, community and agricultural sectors can develop links and understanding. It also enables emerging leaders to meet and learn from existing leaders and combining emerging and existing leaders as a continuing resource of skills and influence to further enrich the community. The GV Young Professionals is a not-for-profit organisation that gives young people in the Goulburn Valley region the opportunity to meet in an informal setting and get to know more about others in the region and to showcase local events. Its mission is to support the growth of the social and intellectual capital of the Goulburn Valley by connecting young professionals with each other and the broader community. The Community Fund Goulburn Valley was created to raise funds and identify groups in the local community in need of support through the group’s grants allocation process and social impact strategies. The group’s aim is to guarantee that the funds raised in the Goulburn Valley, stay in the Goulburn Valley, supporting a wide variety of projects, causes and groups, with a real focus on, but not exclusive to, children and early learning opportunities, the disabled, the elderly and struggling families. The Community Fund’ is both a fundraiser and a funder and has been active in the Goulburn Valley since 2001. In that time more than $3M has been redistributed back into the local community. A SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY… There are many programs and projects running right across the region that have been designed and implemented to continue building the region and its community into a success. Photo: Emma Hillier. THE old saying goes that it takes a village to raise a child. When looking at the growth of a city, it seems that this saying is all too true; growth comes from the support provided by the people that are the city. Greater Shepparton and the wider Goulburn Valley region is lucky enough to have a multitude of programs and projects running that have been specifically executed to ensure growth and prosperity. The Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project is a collective impact initiative to support the wellbeing and outcomes for young people from conception to career in the City of Greater Shepparton. It is being driven by business, the community and sector leaders committed to a 20-year plan to improve the
education and other outcomes for the region’s young people by engaging parents, young people, residents, community leaders, government, funders, thought leaders and academics. The Fairley Leadership Program is the signature community leadership program of Goulburn Murray Community Leadership, a community-based not-for-profit organisation that aims to ‘Develop leaders to be catalysts for positive change in the Goulburn Murray Region.’ Fairley Leadership encourages the development of a vigorous network of community leaders by offering emerging leaders an intensive annual program that explores the major issues and opportunities for the Goulburn Murray region through providing an environment where emerging leaders from the business,

The Kaiela Institute has been established in the region since 2011 and provides a place and a process to encourage and support the region’s leaders and institutions to collaborate and take a more strategic approach to building the future of the community. It is a response by Aboriginal people across the Goulburn Valley indicating, like the statistics do, that a sustainable future is under threat. Building on the pride of good service delivery by organisations such as Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative, the institute is a community investment organisation that supports leadership to question, re-think and act. These among many other programs, which there are too numerous to mention, help to build our region to continue making it a success.

Connecting our region to the world FROM advocating the push for better rail services and road infrastructure, including the Shepparton Bypass, to facilitating conversations about securing an Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) approved facility in Shepparton and being instrumental in helping secure funding for GV Health, the Committee for Greater Shepparton has already had quite an impact on helping the region to be more innovative and prosperous and will continue to work toward connecting Greater Shepparton to Melbourne, Australia and the rest of world. Following the committee’s inception in 2013, members began utilising the proven and powerful ‘committee for’ model to advocate across political lines to push the region’s priorities. CEO Sam Birrell said, “There was strong interest for a model like this to be introduced in the region and we have had a lot of businesses come on board, and this along with working
closely with Greater Shepparton City Council, has helped us to achieve a lot very quickly. It has set itself up as an advocacy group that works constructively with everyone. “The inaugural CEO, Matt Nelson helped to drive better links with State Government and work on projects that were important to the local region such as the Shepparton Art Museum and GV Health redevelopment. “We work collaboratively to achieve things for the region that are categorised under our four strategic pillars; productive community, connected community, creative community and inclusive community. “Both the AQIS approved facility being not too far off and bridge load capacities having been increased are classic examples of what can be achieved. “Having council and the business community on the same page is very powerful when presenting to government bodies.
“Cu r rent ly we a re work i ng towa rd s improved rail services, the Shepparton Bypass and assisting with the Lighthouse Project with their cradle to career aspirations for our young people. We will continue to tackle all challenges that come under our strategic pillars. “Our focus over the next few months will be on the arts, but not in the typical sense of the arts but all creative aspects of the region. We are going to work with stakeholders including Greater Shepparton City Council to develop a ‘Creative City’ policy. There will also be a focus on the diversification of our regional agriculture to vegetable and other crops. “We are also looking at helping to ensure the region is a conduit of high quality horticulture and dairy into the Asian market. “As a region, we must connect with others outside the region. There is huge potential to build on our economy and we need everyone to be a part of the innovation and prosperity.”

WHY do some regions prosper and others fade away? Is it because of their resources, connectivity or wealth? To some degree these all play a part but the attitude of the people is the major factor. Greater Shepparton has always been innovative. We didn’t have the sudden influx of wealth that a gold rush could bring so we have had to find ways of working with our natural advantages. Obviously there was flat land with an ability to construct a network of irrigation channels and soils ideal for growing fruit. But it is the people of this region who have created the economic development from this. A common theme from visitors to Greater Shepparton is that there is more of a ‘have a crack’ and ‘find a way’ attitude here than in other Victorian regions. These attitudes are what will take us into a very successful future. The Committee for Greater Shepparton is an example of the attitude which seeks to drive our region forward in a positive way. Our members see the committee as an instrument of strong advocacy for regional development and are committed to creating a vibrant place for all residents. The committee has been involved in lobbying efforts that have been very successful for the region. The $168.5M funding of stage one of the GV Health re-development and the funding of $10M each from the state and federal governments for the new Shepparton Art Museum are transformative projects, and show the benefit of a shared vision. If the people join together and advocate for a positive vision for a region, then that region is likely to fall into the category of places that prosper.

NORMALLY reserved and understated, Committee for Greater Shepparton Chairman, David McKenzie, could barely contain his excitement when The Adviser caught up with David and CEO, Sam Birrell for Our Goulburn Valley magazine recently. A meeting with David McKenzie reminds us just how good our region can be, his enthusiasm for what we already have is one thing, it’s the potential for what we can do and build on which is even greater. “There is continued huge growth potential with our fresh fruit industry with the best four years in a row with planting right out, the gross value of fruit has never been higher,” David said. He also said that the region would continue to benefit from the high value horticulture industry. “Most of our growth is from within,” David told Our Goulburn Valley magazine. The committee also has recently commissioned a new Murray Darling Basin Authority Socio Economic Impact Study for the region. The committee is supported by a number of gold, silver, and bronze business sponsors, along with leading community organisations. David McKenzie’s enthusiastic attitude towards our region is contagious.

DEAR SHEPPARTON
Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull
DISTRICT READERS,
I have great con f idence i n the community and strengths of business, agriculture and industr y in the Goulburn Valley. I n r ecent months I have seen f irsthand how the many businesses associated with primary production around the country are innovating to maintain and improve their competitive positions in the world markets, and in many instances using the significant opportunities that are opening up under the Coalition’s historic new bi- and multi-lateral trade agreements. Whilst dairy and horticulture have long
As I rapidly approach the halfway mark of my first term in the Victorian Parliament, I find myself reflecting on the past two years. There has been cause for celebration in that period. In April, the Labor Government committed $168.5M towards the redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Health. It’s a cause on which I based my election campaign, and funding which I am so proud to have attracted to the region in the first half of my term. While my work was very much of a political nature our whole community has worked hard for many years to build the case for the redevelopment project. The All Aboard campaign for better and more efficient rail services continues to chip away. The rally on the steps of Parliament House in May last year certainly made an impression, when many came dressed in their pyjamas. As a result, an extra rail service will be introduced in January 2017. It’s a small but promising start, as our campaign continues. In the past two years, we’ve had natural disasters which have hit our residents hard, and now our dairy farmers are in the grips of a crisis. I am encouraged by the spirit of our communities, as friends, families and neighbours rally around each other in times of need. I will continue to speak to ministers during this period, to ensure funding is rolled out to various programs, where it is needed. The loss of water from our region presents one of our greatest economic challenges and a lot of work has been done by the GMID Water Leadership Forum since the water Summit at Tatura in October 2015. The forum commissioned a socio-economic impact study into the effects of this water loss to our region and the results of that study will be launched in October. I thank you, the voters of the Shepparton district electorate for your ongoing support. I will continue to advocate for the best outcome for our electorate.
Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews V IC TOR I A i s ou r nation’s largest food and fibre exporter. It’s an industry that employs around 190,000 people and m a ke s u p n e a r l y five percent of our economy. I t ’s c l e a r f o o d production and processing is at the heart of our state, and the Goulburn Valley is a crucial part of it. The region is known for its world-class horticulture, dairy and wine, and its producers renowned for their innovation, resourcefulness and hard work. been the mainstay industries of the Goulburn Valley, they now share the stage with allied transport, packaging, processing and other agribusinesses. The many professional services, tourism, and hospitality businesses in the greater Goulburn Valley are offering those in the region an amenity of which most Australians would be envious. While some of the established industries face challenges, the government has great confidence that the region has a bright and prosperous future ahead of it. I can assure the people of the valley that we as a government stand shoulder to shoulder with them, and through our economic plan will over this term of government support them and their industries to continue to lead the world growing high quality produce for our domestic and export markets.

Industries Fund, we’ll ensure that locals get the support they need to create jobs, deliver prosperity and continue to meet the worldwide demand for its products. The Labor Government will also continue to ensure that no-one in Shepparton is left behind. That’s why we are investing $169M to rebuild the Shepparton hospital - giving locals access to the world class hospital they deserve and creating 200 vital jobs along the way. We’re also heavily investing in Shepparton’s schools, with an extra $4.7M flowing this year for teaching and learning, so that every student has the chance to succeed and play their full part in the Goulburn Valley’s future. I firmly believe that the Goulburn Valley’s best day’s lay ahead of it. With strong government support and the ingenuity of locals, we can secure the jobs of the future as the Goulburn Valley continues to take on the world.

Messages Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum MP WHAT an honour it is to contribute this message in support of our innovative and cutting edge industries. Whilst many of our industries have been around the Goulburn Valley for as long as we can remember, the processes and techniques that are now used are quite breathtaking. Robotics are now becoming par for the course within many of our larger processing manufacturers. The employees needed to design programs and maintain this computer driven equipment will need the high level education that our school and tertiary institutions can provide. Whilst our dairy industry is currently battling depressed world prices, the overall demand for dairy produce continues to increase by over 2 percent year-on-year. We are hopeful the farm gate price of milk in the future will better reflect the cost of production, and that our dairy farmers will bear the benefits of the efficiencies they have worked so hard to introduce. The Goulburn Valley is also home to cereal crops, viticulture, horticulture and a national hub for transport related businesses. Just as our businesses are introducing innovative and new ways of operation, there is also an increasing range of new industries that are emerging and growing within the Goulburn Valley. It will be an exciting time to live in this great part of Australia.
Greater Shepparton City Council CEO, Peter Harriott GREATER Shepparton acts as a major industrial, employment and service centre for a wide catchment, including many rural settlements, with its GRP totalling $2.86B* per annum. Greater Shepparton forms part of the ‘food bowl of Australia,’ which accounts for 25 percent of the total value of Victoria’s agricultural production. We are a national centre for dairy and horticulture, exporting reliable premium quality fresh and value-added produce via innovative practices and a world class irrigation system. Shepparton is also often referred to as the transport hub of regional Victoria due to its extensive road transport industry. The major industries in our region include manufacturing, retail trade, health care and social assistance, agriculture and construction. Greater Shepparton is home to several multinational and iconic companies such as Campbell’s Soups, SPC, Tatura Milk Industries (Bega Cheese), Unilever, Visy, Pental Limited and Pactum Dairy. There’s no better place to invest than right here in Greater Shepparton. *Figures for the GRP have been sourced from http:// economy.id.com.au/shepparton/home
Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell As a long-time resident and local Member of Pa rl ia ment, I a m privileged to meet and work closely with people and businesses right across many of our most prominent industries, including agriculture, dairy, horticulture, irrigation, manufacturing, engineering, innovation, transport, logistics, healthcare, retail, hospitality, tourism, education and business development. Our community continues to strive for excellence. I see our region’s successes and I see how hard our region works to continually reach new heights. Our primary industries are some of the best in the world, and over the next 10 to 15 years there is enormous opportunity for growth in the export markets for our region, with Asia’s consumer class projected to rise from around 500 million to more than three billion. With this increase in population comes an increased demand for high-quality food - an area in which the Goulburn Valley excels. I am enormously proud of our region, and will continue to strongly advocate for our region’s specific needs in parliament, to make sure our successes continue and our difficulties are overcome. I will continue to work for a strong, proud and successful future for our region.
Committee for Greater Shepparton CEO, Sam Birrell Greater Shepparton has a rich history, and the drivers are here for a very positive future. From the rituals and the embrace of the land of the Yorta Yorta people, to the point at which McGuire tried his hand at small business and ran a punt across the Goulburn, to the post war migration and development of horticulture and dairy as a result of the Goulburn Murray Irrigation Scheme. As far as the future, it is important that we build on what we have and innovate. History is a lesson, and it is interesting to note that an embrace of land and culture (Shepparton Art Museum), a new river crossing (Goulburn Valley Highway bypass), and a diverse agricultural sector (attraction of vegetable producers to the Goulburn Valley) are some of the areas where the Committee for Greater Shepparton has been active. With almost three years of solid achievement, the Committee for Greater Shepparton is confident of a bright future and looks forward to being part of the collaborative effort that moves the region forward. There are so many great stories of innovation in these pages, and we congratulate The Adviser for this publication, which gives us a chance to find out more about our region.
Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed MP I recently visited SPC’s new tomato processing line, funded through the $22M Victorian Government rescue package, together with its parent company Coca Cola Amatil. It highlighted to me, how fortunate we are to have such innovation in our backyard. It’s innovation in the Shepparton District electorate, which has carried over for generations, when we look at such companies as J. Furphy & Sons/Furphy Foundry, and newer companies like Pactum Dairy which are breathing new life into the area. Water remains the link between all of our major industries in the Food bowl. The Goulburn Murray Irrigation District Water Leadership Forum, which I chair, has commissioned a socio-economic impact study of the Murray Darling Basin Plan on the GMID. It is vital we have a clear understanding of the effect the plan is having on our region, and our industries, sooner, rather than later. We will be launching the results of that study in October and demanding that governments take notice of the impact of government policy on our region. Congratulations to The Adviser on its second edition of this feature celebrating our rich, resourceful region.
Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry Acting President, Carl Hainsworth SPORTING, educating and facilitating a healthy, vibrant business community since the 1920s, the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry has a rich history of representing and sustaining local commerce. 2016 has been a big year for the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the Renew Shepparton Project now in phase 2, the 21st annual business awards, a busy events calendar and the strategic growth of our member services and representation. The Renew Shepparton Project has continued to breathe new life into vacant retail spaces around our CBD and reinvigorate Shepparton’s streetscape and economy. The chamber has joined forces with CBD traders to help shape the Maude Street Mall shopping precinct. This year the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced a new alliance with the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, which will bring benefits to members of both organisations and create a stronger voice for the Shepparton business community. There is a definitive feeling of resilience and optimism in our marketplace. We’re looking forward to a bright future, why not be a part of it?

DESPITE the recent downturn in milk pricing, the local dairy industry has a bright future looking ahead. The Goulburn Valley region currently supplies 28 percent of nation’s milk directly, which comes from the 1,000 odd dairy farms in Greater Shepparton (which has an estimated output of $472M annually), the 573 dairy farms in Shire of Campaspe and the hundreds of dairy farms in the Moira Shire (which has an estimated output of $503M annually), which just goes to show how much of an important part they play in the region’s local economy.
New partnership a plus for local dairy industry TATURA Milk has been operating in the Goulburn Valley for over 100 years. Formed as a co-op by farmers for farmers, Tatura Milk, as a subsidiary of Bega Cheese, continues to innovate and evolve to meet with the ever-changing demands of the industry. Bega Cheese Director and local dairy farmer, Rick Cross says that forging new partnerships is one of the ways the company continues to grow and remain strong in such a volatile industry. “Most recently, we’ve formed a new joint venture with Blackmores in September last year, which provides us the opportunity to manufacture infant formula out of our Tatura plant for markets in both China as well as the Australian domestic market. “We’ve been producing infant formula for the last 20 odd years so it’s not a new capability, but it is major new partnerships like this that continue to strengthen our position in the marketplace.” Bega Cheese process approximately 350 million litres of milk per year which equates to approximately 80,000 tonnes of product across infant formula, creamed cheese, butter, whole milk powder, skim milked powder and many more. The manufacturing giant is fed by 320 local suppliers from across the region and the Tatura plant itself employs 380 staff,

with a further 350 employed out of the Strathmerton Bega site, making them one of the largest employers in the region. Despite the volatility of milk prices in the market currently, Tatura Milk managed to hold their price last season and have opened at a higher price this year than the majority of other manufacturers. Rick said, “Our farming families have suffered some pretty tough times recently, and it’s going to be tough going forward, but there’s some good positive indicators and we’re optimistic about the future here on out.”
Positives for packaged commodity THE local team at Pack & Send Shepparton have formed a unique alliance with dairy giant Pactum Dairy in Shepparton, providing a package and deliver y service delivering Pactum’ milk samples throughout Australia and internationally as well. Pack & Send franchise owner, Rick Orr said, “We get along famously with the team at Pactum Dairy and it’s been a wonderful alliance so far.
“Pactum Dairy’s needs are unique in the fact that the milk samples which require distribution are heavy and they involve quite a bit of care to ensure they are delivered safely to both domestic and international destinations. “We’re proud to support Pactum Dairy and to help distribute our wonderful Goulburn Valley products to both the domestic and international markets.”
The freshest dairy products created by locals The highest quality dairy products are made right here in the Goulburn Valley, specifically in Tatura. More than 60% of the total production is exported, giving the world a real taste of our region.
Our fresh milk is collected daily and processed within 24 hours allowing us to produce some of the finest quality products in the world.

HELPING GROW QUALITY PRODUCTS… Varapodio Orchards owner, Rocky Varapodio utilises the services offered by Freshmax, who sources varieties of specific fruits to help the region’s growers produce the quality products that are distributed worldwide. Photo: Emma Hillier.
THE Goulburn Valley is best known for its high quality agriculture, particularly in relation to growing fruit. Being at the forefront of fruit growth requires having a progressive finger on the pulse of the industry. There are people out there who scout the world for new fruit varieties, which offer better features such as longevity and flavour, which ultimately aim at selling to consumers at lower prices. More cost effective approaches to growing fruit make growth and investing in the Goulburn Valley’s fruit bowl an attractive deal all around. Freshmax source varieties of specific fruits importing ‘budwood’ and connecting with local growers, enabling Gouburn Valley growers to offer new varieties of apples, pears and stone fruit. Members of the Freshmax team have been working as a part of the Goulburn Valley fruit growing industry for more than 60 years, including with local growers, Varapodio Orchards. Freshmax group marketing manager, Matthew Crouch said, “The Goulburn Valley is incredibly important to us and grows fruit for two of our six core categories. We work together with orchardists to make quality crops and to be sure fruit is delivered to customers in the best condition possible, and when we talk about quality produce we talk about every stage of the process. “ Freshmax’s ‘stone fruit,’ ‘apple and pear ‘and ‘technical field’ are based in Ardmona and Matthew said, “By 2020 we aim to be one of the largest fresh producers on the Pacific Rim.”
Investing in jobs and qualifications Garden Complex provides employment and training for locals with a disability. LOCAL couple, Michelle and Brad Smith have achieved more in the past decade than many of us can dream of. The humble couple grew up in the local area, Michelle on a local dairy farm at Waaia and Brad right here in Shepparton. Brad completed a fruit growing apprenticeship after he left school, literally starting at the beginning pruning and picking and working his way up the processing chain of local fruit production and distribution. Meanwhile, Michelle studied accountancy and is a qualified CPA.

In 2005 they started Wintersun Fruit, a fruit marketing company that partners with growers from the Goulburn Valley and Nor th East Victoria to supply supermarkets and wholesale markets in Eastern Australia. This business has since grown to include their own export business, transport company, two orchards in Tatura and Mount Bruno, offices and a transport hub in Florence Street, Shepparton and most recently, a retail outlet for Wintersun Fruit, based at the Shepparton Market. Wintersun Fr uit has grown from a small marketing company in 2005 to a business that grows, sources, packs and distributes fruit from Melbourne to Brisbane, and to South East Asia markets. Their retail outlet is a result of frustrations in being able to source good quality local fruit and vegetables. Michelle said, “It was always something that we struggled to comprehend, we live in the Goulburn Valley, a large and successful orcharding community with beautiful locally grown produce, yet you couldn’t buy quality fruit in our local stores. We’re really passionate about the retail side of the business. Fresh, local fruit and vegetables grown fresh from the orchard, we source as much as we can from local growers and we provide an opportunity for people to genuinely support our local farming families. That’s our point of difference.

Proprietor, Paul Phillips said, “With the range, the quality and the volume of wine production increasing at the time we saw an opportunity to be able to represent all of these wineries in one location. A lot of our local wineries had limited cellar door access and they needed to have a retail outlet, so dad and I took the punt and started up the regional wine centre. “Over the last 30 years we’ve seen the
quality and quantity of locally produced wines increase significantly. “We represent approximately 35 local wineries in our area at the moment. When we started out we had a lot less wineries on board and every year we’ve seen increases. “We’ve celebrated some exciting times in wine production over the years and looking ahead, I can see our winery region continuing to grow and experience increases in the future. With conditions the way they’ve been and with the industry know-how, expertise, equipment and the resources behind them, our wineries are in a position to be producing top class, quality wines which we can all be proud of.”

Injecting tens of millions into the local economy INVESTING IN FUTURE… SPC’s new aseptic tomato processing plant. Photo: Emma Hillier.
IF you’ve been around for more than 100 years, you learn a thing or two about supporting the region you call home, and Shepparton Preserving Company (SPC®) has shown this via the tens of millions of dollars it contributes to the local economy every year. In 1917, SPC incorporated as an unlisted public company, and in 1921 Ardmona Fruit Products Co-Op Ltd. opened for business. Since those early days SPC Ardmona, now colloquially known as SPC has been synonymous with Shepparton and the ‘fruit bowl of Australia.’ Today SPC indirectly supports more than 2,700 jobs across the region, sources its fruit from around 130 Australian farmers and supplies the highest quality Australian products to supermarkets, food service, health care and specialty retail outlets nationally. But it doesn’t stop there. SPC is now exporting the region’s best quality fruit to Asia. SPC managing director, Reg Weine says, “Over the last 18 months SPC has invested significantly in our capital investment program, which includes the contribution from the Victorian Government. We have installed our new high speed snack cup line and also our new aseptic tomato processing plant.

The SPC story continues for the Prentice family LOCAL owners of SPC Factory Sales in Shepparton, Andrew and son, Samuel Prentice are proud of their role in providing a direct to the public outlet for the Goulburn Valley’s own SPC branded products. But it’s their long, lesser known association with the factory which brings them the most amount of pride. Andrew Prentice was the former owner and operator of Prentice Orchards at Orrvale, and was the third generation in their orcharding family, supplying fresh local fruit to the region. In fact, Prentice Orchards were one of the original fruit growers to supply to the SPC co-op right from its inception in 1917. Andrew Prentice was also on the board of SPC for 12 years experiencing history first hand with both the merge between SPC and Ardmona fruit products as well as the sale of the business to Coca-Cola Amatil. Over time, Andrew started to consider
his succession plan within the orcharding industry and it was at that time that Jim Andreadis approached Andrew and son, Samuel with the idea of taking over the SPC Factory Sales operation. Andrew said, “I felt very fortunate to have an opportunity to work with my son and to continue to be associated with such an iconic business as SPC. “At the time, we had been scaling down our fruit growing interests and SPC had been such a big part of our lives, it just seemed so fitting that we continue with the brand in a new capacity.” Samuel said, “People feel a real connection to the SPC brands both here in the Goulburn Valley and all around the country and we especially feel that connection given our beginnings. We’re proud to continue our role in providing the community with not only SPC products, but also other favourite big name brands as well.”

Founder, William “Bill” Birchall chose Shepparton as the ideal base for the business due to its rich farming community and diverse industry conditions. Today, the company is a far cry from its humble beginnings, employing over 100 staff and existing as a core part of three major buying groups including NRI (Rural), Home Hardware (Timber and Hardware) and Indepet (Pet Supplies). WB Hunter Home Hardware from its custom built site in Florence Street, Shepparton is responsible for a supply reach encompassing the entire Goulburn Valley as well as Southern New South Wales incorporating industries such as gardening/landscaping, building, concreting, steel fabrication, agricultural sectors including dairy, grazing, cropping, horticulture, horse training and ‘DIY’ animal nutrition. WB Hunter Home Hardware store manager, Peter Lloyd said, “Being a local family operated business in close contact with the region and its communities, WB Hunter has the capability of adapting to meet the changes to local economy and environment. “As the need is recognised we’re able to implement new strategies such as our field service team made up of agronomists and animal nutritionists who were sourced to better meet the needs of our farming community. “We employ people who are leaders within their field of expertise because our customers are important to us. Our team members have the customer service skills and the product knowledge to assist our customers across industries at every level. “Looking towards the future, we look forward to continuing to grow as a family operated business, pursuing new lines and opportunities within all aspects of the business. WITH a sustainable approach to business, Unilever in Tatura has been operating in the local region since 1963 and employs local people throughout the Goulburn Valley to manufacture their quality food products. Famous for its Lipton Ice Tea and Continental Cup a Soups, pasta and rice side dishes, dinner recipes and Lipton Chai Latte, Unilever Tatura is committed to achieving its environmental goals with sustainability at the core of how the business operates and grows in the future. Unilever Tatura site HR manager, Nicole Cooper said, “Vitality is key to Unilever’s products and purpose. It is about helping people look good, feel good and get more out of life, and it is about the way we manage our business, including our impact on communities and the environment.
“In 2015, the installation of an in– line bottle blowing facility enabled the factory to purchase pre-form containers, which take up less space to transport and in turn reduces the number of truck journeys each year by 1,200. Re– designing manufacturing processes and energy recovery systems are now reducing CO2 emissions by over 5,000 tonnes annually. Packaging waste has also been decreased via lightweight bottles and caps that are reducing plastic used by 93 tonnes per year. “Water reduction has been the focus for the factory over the last 12 months. Improvements to recover more steam condensate and harvest rainwater from 8,500 square metres of roof space are now supplying the site’s boiler with over 70 percent of its weekly-required water needs.”
A ‘Fairley’ significant part of the community FOR the better part of 40 years, Fairleys SUPA IGA has been an integral part of the Shepparton community, not just for residents in the North, but for the entire Greater Shepparton region. Fairleys SUPA IGA owner, Michael Lorenz said, “The Shepparton store is one of the largest SUPA IGAs in Victoria employing more than 230 staff. “One of ou r big gest poi nt s of difference is our unique community rewards program, which is designed to directly support local not-for-profit and community organisations. Our community rewards program is driven directly by our customers who are able to
allocate points per spend to their chosen community group based on one point per $1 plus bonus points ranging from 5-50 for specific single ticketed product purchases. “Throughout the 2015/2016 financial year, Fairleys SUPA IGA directly supported more than 50 local organisations, clubs, schools and charities through the rewards program raising $54,541 for these important local organisations, which is a significant contribution. “We’re very proud of our rewards program and the support it offers and we’re very proud to be a part of the Goulburn Valley community.”

Our Goulburn Valley
Irrigation
WATER is the single most precious resource available to the Goulburn Valley. Without adequate water, our farming industries could not survive and without state-of-the-art irrigation processes and systems in place to move the water our booming agriculture sector would fall. Across the Goulburn Valley in the 2015 season, water used for irrigation purposes was 1,133GL.
Improving the region’s on-farm productivity IRRIGATING SUCCESS… Local dairy farmer, Paul Price. Photo: Supplied.
LABOUR and water savings, greater flexibility and increased productivity are the main benefits of the Farm Water Program (FWP), according to the region’s farmers. The FWP, a consortium of Northern Victor ia n agencies Nor t h Cent r a l Catchment Management Authority, North East Catchment Management Authority, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Goulburn-Murray Water, Dairy Australia, Murray Dairy, Northern Victorian Irrigators and the Australian Government, led by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, has secured $200M from the Victorian and Australian Governments to help irrigators improve on-farm irrigation systems and achieve water savings.
To date 514 FW P projects worth $138M have been completed, generating increased on-farm productivity as well as 68 gigalitres of water savings that are shared between the environment and irrigators. The FWP is estimated to have generated at least $28M a year in economic benefits across the region by attracting investment and creating hundreds of jobs in irrigation-related industry. Dairy farmers, Paul and Kerrie Price have completed 80 hectares of irrigation upgrades through the FWP. “It used to take my dad two weeks to irrigate the whole farm,” Mr Price said. “Due to the fluctuation in the channel system, it took 16 to 18 hours to irrigate one bay; now it’s a breeze – it takes one hour to three hours per bay. “Over a four-year period, the prices have also led pasture consumption to be doubled from 6.4 tonne/hectare to 15 tonne/hectare.”
A snapshot of Lake Eildon HARNESSING the river catchments in the vicinity of the present Lake Eildon began in the early 1900s. Development of this water resource was undertaken by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission to provide irrigation water for what was a vast, uncultivated area on Victoria’s Northern plains, which includes the Goulburn Valley. This region has since developed into the largest area of irrigated farmland in Australia and is known as the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District.

Our Goulburn Valley
Irrigation
Local world leaders in irrigation technology THERE are hundreds of farms operating right across the Goulburn Valley that help to produce products that are distributed worldwide, but these farms could not operate without one precious resource, irrigated water. Since 1995, Rubicon Water has been m a nu fac t u r i ng i n Sheppa r ton a nd today runs its headquarters from the local premises. Rubicon’ is a leader in innovation and technology, employing more than 100 staff in manufacturing, project delivery and hydraulic research at its Shepparton facility. Rubicon Water CEO, Bruce Rodgerson said, “Rubicon’ is a proud local company and from humble beginnings in the Goulburn Valley we have developed world leading solutions to modernise irrigation systems locally and around the globe. “Water is li fe in our com munit y. Our solutions make the open channel distribution systems that transport water from dams to farms much more efficient,
helping to save water, improve service and ultimately make local produce more competitive on the world stage. “Fa r m i n g i s o n t h e c u s p o f a technological revolution and irrigation automation will be at the heart of it. “Rubicon’ is passionate about being a part of delivering on our region’s and nation’s potential. In our part of the food bowl modernisation, we’ve assisted the modernisation of more than 3,500km of irrigation channels. That’s almost the equivalent of the distance from Melbourne to Darwin. “The on farm outcomes achieved locally have enabled Rubicon’ to grow our business and reach out to markets in China, the USA and South America. “T he n at ion a l E xpor t Awa rd we received last year was a testament to the great quality product we produce in Shepparton. We’ve got the suppliers, the technical expertise and the workforce here in the Goulburn Valley.”

Region produces 28 percent of nation’s milk RECENT price drops have left our local dairy industry devastated over the last few months, couple that with increased water from excessive rainfall and there is absolutely no doubt, our dairy farming communities are enduring tough conditions. Local Tatura farmer and Murray Dairy chair, Rick Cross says “The Murray Dairy region which extends from Swan Hill to Corryong and Finley to Murchison makes up Australia’s largest dairy farming region and we’re certainly one of the best. We produce 28 percent of the nation’s milk directly from this region, that’s pretty significant. “Our farmers have endured drought, they’ve endured water leaving the region … it’s been tough and then with the price drops driven by Murray Goulburn, our farmers have had a gut full. However, there are some positives on the horizon. “The indications on a global scale are that everything is starting to stabilise and head in the right direction, going forward there will be a bit more upside in our milk prices.
We won’t see it for this year, but going forward it should start rolling through. “Floods and wet weather are far more stressful than droughts on animals and farmers alike, but if we can get through the next few weeks the indications are that we’re heading towards a full allocation for the summer period, and we’ll have a feed bank of grass in front of us which we haven’t had in years. “We’re seeing water in dams which haven’t had water in them in more than 10 to 15 years. “Crops are beautiful, and if we can get silage and hay off our own dry country, that’ll be a bonus because we haven’t been able to do that for a couple of years. “If we can hold off irrigating until the end of September then it will be brilliant. This should bring temporary prices down, grain prices should come back, hay prices should come back because we’re all producing more on farm and we’ll be able to grow and feed grass and that’s the big win out of all of this.”

Service and design that effects us all HYDRAULICS forms the core technology behind many industrial companies and so many of the applications we see in our daily lives. Whether it’s at home or at work, in mobile or stationary applications, life, as we know it wouldn’t be possible without hydraulic systems. Construction vehicles, cable cars, and most manufacturing machines all run with the use of hydraulics, no theatre stage would rotate, no harvesting machine would work with speed and precision and unloading trucks would be near impossible. Personal and professional life would become a lot less convenient. Hydraulic systems are strong, robust, and they work more reliably than most comparable technologies. By integrating high-performance electronics and control software, hydraulic systems are constantly becoming more intelligent, all the while, the software also ensures that increasingly complex systems are becoming easier to operate. Servicing the Goulburn Valley, GV Hydraulink business owner, Angelo Poppa said, “Over the past 24 years, our business has become an industry leader with a current customer base of over 500 and an average job intake of 12-15 daily

WITH more than five million recreational anglers throughout Australia, there is a need for fantastic price point all rounder boats. Because of this, local business Boats & More have come up with a product to improve the odds when fishing for cod and other species. The Cod Catcher is a 4.1m side console fishing boat that was specifically designed by Boats & More in Shepparton after customers told them that there was a niche in the market for this specialised piece of fishing genius. Boats & More sales manager, James Hiles said, “We created the Cod Catcher by putting all the key points together for perfect cod catching conditions and comfort. “We have many years in the boating and fishing industry and we kept hearing
from our customers that something like this was needed in the market. “We listened to what people wanted, and together came up with something that would allow families to enjoy the best on water experience available. “This helps to put the Goulburn Valley on the map with so much great fishing in the area. “It is manufactured by Clark Boats Australia and has been put together in conjunction with the team at Boats & More. “The initial builds started around two years ago and changes have since been made to come up with the Cod Catcher’s final build, which was officially released at the Melbourne Boat Show this year. “Many have been sold in the local area as well as long distances away, such as Boggabri in NSW.”

The valleys’ own ‘Aussie Hitch’ DATING back to the mid ‘60s, Calandro Engineering is a business which was pioneered by a hard working migrant, Eugenio Calandro who was a humble fitter and turner, and a boilermaker by trade. 50 years on, Calandro Engineering still operate within the motor vehicle industry today, with the bulk of their contracts consisting of manufacturing componentry, building and repairing trailers for contracts all over Australia. Now operated by son, Mario Calandro, Calandro Engineering is a proud name in engineering. Mario said, “Dad started out small, building sheds, going to the markets making little bits and pieces, making fly wire doors, featured scroll works etc. He was very talented and there’s still a lot of his artwork around Shepparton. He just loved it and eventually he branched off into construction and the motor vehicle industry.” “I grew up with the industry and I’ve always loved the aspect of creating things with my hands. It’s incredible.” Calandro Engineering is famed for their creation of the ‘Aussie Hitch’. Their own invention, the ‘Aussie Hitch’ was created in 1966 as a ‘fifth wheel’ cupping device. It couples the prime mover to the trailer and is a component which continues to be commonly used today. And despite overseas offers to purchase the rights to the ‘Aussie Hitch’, Mario and his father refuse to sell it. Mario said, “I’m proud of the products we’ve got and I’m proud that Australians are making them. Everything is sourced locally, including Furphy’s, JMAR and Trevakis Engineering they all assist to build componentry for us. We keep everything in Australia because at the end of the day, that’s where the money’s going.”

assembly hall. Standing 20m tall in the mid section, the building allows efficient assembly and storage of tanks up to 18m in height. Combined with the latest forming, welding and polishing equipment from around the world, the overall facility brings a new benchmark to tank and vessel supply in Australia. “Sheppa r ton a nd t he i m med i ate surrounding region has provided the perfect environment for the development of stainless steel tank manufacture on such a scale. With so much intensive food processing in the region, the demand for stainless steel craftsmanship, expertise and capability has allowed us to invest in this business over many years. Combined with our investment in hot dip galvanizing operations here in Shepparton as well as Albury and Geelong we are proud of the contribution we have made to manufacturing in this great region!” In 1989 the Furphy family made the brave decision to split off the foundry portion of J. Furphy & Sons as a separate business. Today, Furphy Foundry still operates out of the original Shepparton premises and is run by Adam’s cousin, Sam Furphy, with a turnover of $7M from its manufacturing capabilities for park and street furniture as well as open space infrastructure.
Director of Furphy Foundry, Sam Furphy said, “Furphy Foundry is a leader in its field. We manufacture a comprehensive range of standard products and respond regularly to more complex custom projects for councils, landscape architects, schools, universities and developers. From public seating, litter bins and barbeques through to shelters, restrooms and pedestrian bridges you will find our products in most parks and footpaths throughout Australia. “Our operation has three distinct production centres being cast aluminium, steel and stainless steel fabrication and assembly, as well as logistics. We have a very loyal and valued workforce ranging from apprentices learning the trade through to 30 year veterans. “There is an excellent supply chain that exists in the local area and many very good companies who specialise as component makers and suppliers. These companies are an extension of our business and help us ride out the fluctuations in market demand. It would not be possible to operate without the support of our suppliers, which we are committed to keeping local. “We w i l l cont i nue to i nvest i n opportunities and initiatives in order to maintain a successful and sustainable future in the greater Shepparton region.”

New $25M pipe manufacturing facility THE Goulburn Valley region relies heavily on a successful irrigation sector, and to ensure its success and growth, high quality pipes are a necessity. MC Pipes has gone from strength to strength since beginning operations in 1948 and today supply steel reinforced concrete pipes to projects for capital works, local government, government water authorities, civil infrastructure (residential and industrial), plumber drainer market as well as the irrigation market. MC Pipes sales director, Brett Warburton said, “As well as other sectors, we play an important part in the irrigation industry, which essentially is the Goulburn Valley’s bread and butter. Knowing we are doing our part to help the region continue to thrive is what it is all about. “The company has tripled production since being at our Watson Street premises and our capabilities have grown. “We currently employ 42 staff and a large number of those staff have been with the company for more than 20 years.” Managing director, Andrew Giankos said, “To show our dedication to supporting the region, we have recently invested in a $25M state-of-the-art pipe manufacturing facility. “This new pipe machine allows us to be more competitive in the market place and has a high speed production turnaround time that enables us to meet and assist in customer short notice orders. “MC Pipes is also part of some pretty major infrastructure at the moment and is heavily involved in irrigation schemes in NSW, Queensland and WA.” AN IMPORTANT PART OF INDUSTRY SUCCESS… From left, MC Pipes sales director, Brett Warburton and managing director, Andrew Giankos. boom A GROWING confidence has led to increases in building approvals and land sales, with a total value of building approvals of $408.018M across the Goulburn Valley in 2015/16. As one of the leaders in commercial and residential building sales and land sales, Kevin Hicks Real Estate has been watching the trends change since opening in 2002. S i n c e t h e n , t h e co m p a n y h a s introduced selling of rural land in the region where they have seen confidence bu i ld i n far ms, i r r igation g r azi ng properties and cropping land thanks to the end of the drought. Kevin Hicks said, “We service areas across the Goulburn Valley including Nathalia, Numurkah, Murchison and Tatura, as well as continuing to support residential and commercial areas of Shepparton. We have also conducted
proper t y sales i n the Str athbog ie Shire, the Euroa area, Benalla and have conducted clearance sales as far as Boort. “The building industry across the region looks very promising. Over the last six months, house and land development has been significant. “The grow th of the region over the last 12 months has seen a boom in construction of homes. “ S o m e o f t h e b i g co m m e r c i a l developments over the last two to three years have had spin-offs to the residential market; mainly the development of the irrigation system, which has increased the need for specialist engineers to upgrade modernisations, who require permanent residence. We’ve seen new supermarkets arrive and planning permits to create more are in the works, which is providing healthy growth. Every aspect of regional development increases activity.”

A strong heritage THE local Guseli family is understandably very proud of their achievements. Over the last 41 years they’ve been operating Mediterranean Custom Pools, but the family have a great deal more to be proud of here in Australia. The late Alvaro Guseli was the patriarch of the five generations of Guselis now living in Australia. Alvaro learned and practiced his craft as a structural stone mason approximately 80km from Rome, in a place called Castelliri, while he and his wife, Emilia brought up their eight children. Their three eldest boys, Michele (Mick), Antonio (Tony) and Donato (Don) left Castelliri in their late teens in search of a better life in Australia. Mick and Tony joined an engineering company involved in the construction of the Snowy Mountains hydroelectric scheme, where sadly, Tony was killed along with three others during the worst multiple fatality of the scheme, and Don worked in Cooma as a shoe repairer. In 1960, Alvaro, Emilia and the rest of the family settled in Shepparton. Over time Alvaro established a reputation in the building industry, specialising in terrazzo tiling, marble work and Castlemaine slate. In the early ‘60s he purchased the property at 8038 Goulburn Valley Highway, which remains with the family and now serves as the Mediterranean Custom Pools display centre.
A PROUD FAMILY… From left, the Mediterranean Custom Pools Guseli family business founder, Don, owner/operator, Robert, future owner, Sebastian, 7, and construction supervisor, Joel. Photo: Emma Hillier.
Don built his first pool in his own backyard in 1974, which after, he and his brothers, Peter and Guido decided there was a need for a quality pool builder in the Goulburn Valley area and established Mediterranean Custom Pools in 1976. Now, with over 1,600 pools completed spanning five decades, Mediterranean Custom Pools continue to maintain their high standard of quality with Robert Guseli as business owner and his son, Joel as construction supervisor, continuing their family’s proud heritage.

THE construction industr y’s annual output in Greater Shepparton alone is more than $710M, with the electrical installation work a vital component. Watters Electrical have played a major part in the local construction industry and provided quality electrical works to a large number of installations. We are pleased to announce Watters Electrical will be the electrical contractor for Shepparton’s new five storey Law courts. CEO, David Bassett, said, “We were honoured and proud to be awarded the contract and look forward to working with ADCO Constructions” Proudly ser vici ng the Gou lbu r n Valley since 1957, Watters Electrical started when Lance Watters created LT & WE Watters, which he developed for 23 years and then sold to his nephew, Robin Knaggs in April 1980. Robin then changed the company’s name to Watters
Electrical, keeping the Watters name and continuing to build on its building reputation. Today, Watters Electrical employs 150 staff members throughout its three locations in Shepparton, Albury and Cobram. Wa t t e r s E l e c t r i c a l C E O, D a v i d Bassett, said, “Despite having a good dea l of com mercia l projects i n a variety of locations, we also carry out a vast amount of solar, data & security, civil and industrial work for locally owned businesses and residents of t he Sheppa r ton a nd su r rou nd i ng communities. “The commercial and residential construction industry is an important part of the growth of the Goulburn Valley region, and we are proud to be a part of that.”

Copulos family continues to invest in Shepparton SHEPPARTON’S Copulos family continues to forge ahead with considerable investment in Shepparton. Closest to the Copulos family’s heart is the Parklake Hotel, which is currently under a major redevelopment due for completion in the coming months. Patriarch of the family, Peter Copulos, began his property career with the purchase of a large block on the corner of Wyndham and Swallow Streets in 1961. It was from this humble development site of six accommodation rooms and a restaurant that an extraordinary career was launched spanning across Australia and several parts of the world. Today, the Parklake’ continues to evolve with a major expansion underway, taking the conference and accommodation complex
to three levels and 70 plus rooms with undercover car parking. Among other major projects the Copulos family continues to invest in, is MC Pipes, located at a new site in Provincial Crescent off Doyles Road, Shepparton. The fast growing business fits a niche which is in high demand. The business recently invested $25M in an upgraded plant which has increased productivity considerably. The technology from Europe is the best in the world. One of the keys to the Copulos family’s success is continuous reinvestment in their businesses, whether it’s upgrading with stateof-the-art equipment, upgrading their many workplaces, investing in staff and not least, investing in the latest and best workplace practices. Helping drive the suite of businesses both
in Australia and internationally is Peter and Mary’s son, Stephen. Stephen chairs mining companies, is a major player in the food industry - both here and in New Zealand (Restaurant Brands) - and is the driver of a large number of the family’s varied property, hospitality, mining and manufacturing projects. Property has always been close to the Copulos family’s heart. The continued growing success of Riverside Plaza in South Shepparton added Harvey Norman and Fun City as tenants 15 months ago, and is about to
develop an early childcare centre nearby. From business to philanthropy, the Copulos family has been a major contributor to many projects, such as raising funding and awareness for prostate cancer via the Blokes Biggest barbeque, and more directly GV Health. Many local businesses and employees enjoy various spin-offs to businesses the Copulos family continues to invest in. Our Goulburn Valley and The Adviser recognise the Copulos family as significant corporate citizens.

Region leads the way in driver training standards
A NEW DIRECTION… From left, DECA Driver Education trainer, Bevan Florence, administration officer, Robyn Guilmarton, trainer, Greg Sutherland, manager, Warren Smith, trainer, Darryn King, senior administration officer, Kerrin Houldcroft, trainer, David Arthur and administration officer, Jenny McClure. Photo: Emma Hillier.
FOR over 42 years, DECA (Driver Education Centre of Australia) has been an Australian leader of driver training program development and delivery. Over this period, the Australian driver training market has seen a lot of change requiring DECA to constantly transform and remain current, competitive and innovative. DECA has undergone an exciting operational transformation in 2016 with a concentrated focus on national driver training capabilities and post-licence driver excellence programs. This structural change has seen the driver training school transition away from the traditional licence-to-drive market. DECA Shepparton business manager, Warren Smith said, “DECA’s corporate driver training operations have been the shining light of the business in recent years. We identified a critical need for postlicence excellence programs in servicing some of Australia’s largest transport operators. Industry partners consistently stated that licensing alone wasn’t sufficient in bringing drivers up to professional industry standards. Inconsistency in driver capability and skill has seen fleet operators, and the industry in general, incur significant additional costs and safety risks.” “As an industry, we have a responsibility to provide opportunities for drivers to elevate to the highest possible professional standards, and that’s what DECA provides with pride.” “Recognising the scope and opportunity inherent in solving this driver skills issue, DECA is well placed to continue leading the way in heightening driver training standards across Australia.” With a new range of post-licence driver excellence programs, DECA and Wodonga TAFE CEO, Mark Dixon said, “We are very excited about this new direction for DECA. Our training will not only benefit the industry’s bottom line, but improve safety for drivers and the public, as well as reduce the impact our industry has on the environment. We are confident that our training methodology will set an international benchmark.”

Our Goulburn Valley
Transport
A strong presence in transport for nearly 70 years TRANSPORT has evolved to become one of the major employers in the Goulburn Valley, with 2,854 employed in the industry across the four council areas governing the region. With 28 staff on board servicing more than 2,500 trucks and helping to supply more than 80 trucks each year for the transport industry, Taig Bros has held its ground strongly in the region since 1947. Beginning as road contractors and bridge builders working on various road and bridge constructions in the Goulburn Valley, Taig Bros was headed by Alf Taig, with the assistance of Ron and Norm who worked and managed the service, parts and sales. They purchased a block on the corner of St Georges Road and High Street constructing their first building in 1948, evolving the business to be the Taig Bros known today. Taig Bros dealer principal, John Taig said, “When Taig Bros started, the economy in the region began to boom with the influx of migrants from war torn Europe providing labour to support a fruit, dairy and vegetable industry. We supplied SPC, Ardmona, Hazelwoods, Campbell’s Soups, Shepparton Butter Factory, three sauce factories and a large transport industry. “Today we have three truck and two tractor franchises and we service as far East as Mansfield, South to Broadford, West to Echuca and North to Jerilderie. “We have been a part of the transport industry for almost seven decades and we are proud to be helping the industry and the region continue to be a success story.
AN EVOLVING BUSINESS… Taig Bros owner, John Taig. Photo: Emma Hillier.
“There are continual changes happening in the transport industry with ‘Euro 6’ emission levels just around the corner if not already here with some makes. Automated shift transmissions now represent more than
50 percent of the truck market. The savings on fuel and driveline wear is amazing plus reducing driver fatigue. It would have to be one of the smartest innovations the industry has seen.”
Managing your freight

Freighting goods to and from the Goulburn Valley for 15 years
Lyndon and Ros Bicknell created Bicknell’s Freight in 2001. Their focus has always been to provide a personal and reliable service and recognise that communication is of the upmost importance in order to maintain customer satisfaction. Freight coordinators remain in constant contact with drivers during the day,
eliminating the frustration of non-deliveries, shortages, futile and missed pick ups. Lyndon and Ros Bicknell continue to build on the business’ reputation and its growth using available technology to streamline processes whilst never losing their ‘personal touch’. They strive to compete only on quality of service.

Building businesses that help us thrive
A STRONG SUPPORTER OF TRANSPORT… Complete Equipment Sales owner, Sebastian Spadaro. Photo: Emma Hillier.
AS Victoria’s food bowl, a major manufacturing hub and a gateway from Northern Victoria and beyond, the Goulburn Valley has a strong transport industry supporting the abundant flow of produce, which in itself has created a huge service growth. Purchasing new trucks to expand or develop businesses can be expensive and time consuming as businesses await stock arrival. With eight full time staff on board, Complete Equipment Sales supply used trucks to companies and industries throughout the Goulburn Valley. Refurbishing and customising trucks to specific applications enables Complete Equipment Sales to meet particular business requirements, whether that be from the agricultural sector to general palletised freight cartage. Based in Shepparton, this family run business was established in 2009 by John Spadaro and meets the needs of new and developing businesses as they often work within budgets and company deadlines to get businesses on the road. Now having taken over the reins, company owner, Sebastian Spadaro has continued to build the business to an average stock level of over 60 items with a broad range from used bobcats, excavators, forklifts, tractors and utes to a range of quality trucks from small, medium and large rigids, prime movers and semi-trailers. With years of experience in the transport industry, Sebastian says, “Our sales staff are more than happy to assist any customer needs from a small owner driver who would like to accomplish their dream of starting up a small courier business or a farmer who has been toying with the idea of fulfilling their own cartage, to the larger business operators requiring a particular product.”

A proud company servicing Australia
MOVING 81,000 tonnes of product annually is no easy feat, but MMV Transport is helping to drive the local transport industry by doing just that. Operating in the Goulburn Valley for 16 years, MMV Transport, headed by owners Leckie and Glenda Milne and Paul and Di Murphy, utilise its fleet of 20 trucks to support local businesses including Visy, SPC, Pental and Campbell’s Soups, with their reach going interstate through support provided to Boral, Linfox, Bondor and many others. Di Murphy said, “We are proud to be a company operating out of the Goulburn Valley who delivers Australia wide. “Our plan in the industry is to remain viable and continue to grow. “There will always be a need for road transport, but it is becoming very difficult with all the compliance and accreditation.”

A vision for the future of local transport THE future of the transport industry in the Goulburn Valley is looking strong, and local transport business, Frank Gattuso Transport and Packaging is one of those helping to lead the way. Frank Gattuso Transport and Packaging has had a firm grip in supporting local industry since 1990, beginning in Mooroopna selling packaging for fruit growers, and 10 years on moving to their Central Avenue depot in Shepparton East and diversifying to transport products between Melbourne and other areas of the state. Today, the business has 55 staff and operates ‘round the clock,’ providing next day delivery of products including retail items, hardware and rural store products from Melbourne to Deniliquin, Echuca, Wangaratta, Benalla and everywhere in between. Owner, Frank Gattuso said, “The way our business has developed over the years has seen distribution become pretty strong. The region and industry within the region is growing and because of that, it is putting the transport industry in a strong position. “We have enjoyed being in the transport industry in the Goulburn Valley. We started off with one truck and have grown to having 32 trucks in total, including 14 rigid trucks. “We have our own workshop with three mechanics, which means we are mostly self sufficient. Any major repairs are sent out to dealers to repair such as Hartwigs Trucks locally. We are proud to be able to support other local businesses. “Mark Herrick has just joined the business as an operations/business development manager. Employing local people is important to us and bringing fresh, young blood into the picture is something that we are keen to do looking into the future. We have two young people

helping to continue the Gattuso legacy. Callum Bogdan has been with the business for five years and has just been promoted to take care of customer service, and my son,
Jordan Gattuso is a second year diesel mechanic, who has a vision to take the reigns in the business and follow in the family footsteps.”

ASIDE from farming, transport is the second largest industry in the Goulburn Valley and assists in the success of many businesses. Having celebrated their 60th birthday this year, S. Sali & Sons Transport is a very big part of the industry, today carrying 60 loads per week, which is approximately 3,000 annually. Beginning in 1956 through a dream of two brothers, Alan and Sam Sali, S. Sali & Sons has grown from a ‘fleet’ of just one truck that delivered 100 plus loads per year, to six B-Doubles that carry 38 tonnes at a time and three single, semitrailers capable of carrying 24 tonnes per load. These trucks are used to deliver food products, building materials and general purpose materials to areas right across the country. Managing director, Sam Sali said, “Today, we have many national clients and concentrate heavily on interstate work carrying food products, building materials and a range of other materials. “Because of the fact we are a smaller, family owned and operated business it allows us to remain competitive in the industry locally. “We have also had our own dedicated workshop and mechanic from the

beginning, which is a big help when it comes to servicing our fleet and moving forward. “When it comes to the business in the Goulburn Valley and beyond, customers are the most important. They are not dependant on us, we are dependant on them. Customers are not outsiders in our business, they are a part of it.”

Servicing the Goulburn Valley and beyond THE Goulburn Valley has long been recognised as being a destination point for migrants who have helped build and expand growth in our area. Tony Pastucci hails from a migrant family who made Shepparton their home. Tony’s father, Lenny, arrived from Foggia, Italy in 1949 and his mother Mary, arrived from Calabria, Italy in 1950. Tony’s parents instilled in him a strong drive to succeed and the love of the community they had made their own. Tony has been involved in the motor vehicle industry all his working life, first as a mechanic, then as a car salesman, then car yard proprietor and now as the owner of Lift N Shift. Tony and his wife Julie Pastucci established Lift ‘N’ Shift in 1999 and from just one truck, hard work and dedication, they have built their business to encompass approximately 16 trucks and 15 staff members. With over 17 years experience servicing clients throughout the Goulburn Valley and beyond, Lift ‘N’ Shift’s services are extensive. Ranging from tip trucks, crane trucks, low loaders and specialising in towing tractors, excavators, containers, forklifts, site huts and access equipment they have earned a reputation as being professional and reliable, both locally and further afield. Many staff members are long-term employees reflecting the Pastucci’s commitment not only to the Goulburn Valley but their priority to nurture and develop a great workplace environment. Tony and Julie are great suppor ters of the com munit y providing sponsorship and assistance to many local charities and organisations including Shepparton United Football Club, Shepparton South Soccer Club, The Lions Club Of Shepparton, Mooroopna Harness Racing Club, Rotary Club of Shepparton, ‘Give me 5 for kids’ and many other local organisations. The Pastucci family love Shepparton and are very passionate about the growth and prosperity of our Goulburn Valley.

A DRIVING FORCE… From left, Keatings Freight Liner Pty Ltd family and co-owners, Stephen, Ken, Chris, Mark and Ashley Keating. Photo: Emma Hillier.
Pride for transport industry THE Keating family, who has had transport in their blood for more than 30 years and across four generations, know all too well just how significant the industry is in Shepparton, with 691 operational trucks within a 3km radius of the Keatings Freight Liner Pty Ltd Shepparton East depot alone which is responsible for 890 odd employee opportunities. Here in Shepparton, Ken Keating is the driving force behind the local Keating Freight Liner Pty Ltd operation, or Keatings’ as it’s more commonly known and after recently having turned 80 years old, there’s plenty of travel left in this modest man’s tyres. Ken said, “I can’t complain, I had a beautiful wife by my side for 40 years and it has been very rewarding.”
The Keatings’ name is synonymous with transport, so much so, that Ken is set to be celebrated this month as the latest inductee into the trucking hall of fame, right beside his father in Alice Springs. Keatings’ first began in Shepparton in 1982, prior to that Ken had worked his way across all facets of transport from furniture removal, egg and livestock delivery through to delivering Streets ice-creams and that’s how he came to find himself in Shepparton. In Shepparton Ken has left his mark on the industry, having a hand in developing Geoffrey Thompsons as well as Zurcas Trucking Company before starting up Ken Keating Freightliners Pty Ltd as it was known at the time. “Today we service the entire north east of Victoria as
well as Melbourne to Barnawartha. We love transport, it’s in our blood. “We’re really proud to have been such a big part of the Goulburn Valley for the past 34 years and look forward to the future ahead.” General manager, Chris Keating said, “It was our grandfather who first began the Keatings brand within the transport industry, but every succession of the family has started from scratch, working our way up the chain and I believe that’s how we’ve stayed so grounded. “All of the sons from every leg of the Keating family currently work within the transport industry, it’s very special.”

CARING FOR TRANSPORT INDUSTRY… Full On Trucks owner, Sean Teasdale. Photo: Emma Hillier.
Specialising in Engine and Drive Line Repairs and Rebuilds W ITH an estimated 10,048 tr ucks registered throughout the Goulburn Valley, it is imperative to keep the transport industry rolling into a successful future to have business within the industry to keep the trucks on the road. Beginning in 2002, Full On Truck Maintenance has worked hard to provide much needed servicing and repairs to most makes and models of heavy transport vehicles in the Goulburn Valley and further afield, which are utilised across a wide variety of industries including grain, livestock, dirt and gravel, cartons and general freight carriers as well as fresh produce. Owner, Sean Teasdale said, “We have
customers from Melbourne to Brisbane, Sydney to Mildura and everywhere in between. “The Goulburn Valley’s transport industry helps to keep the wheels turning in other sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture, so it is important to take care of the industry. “We would like to see improvements made in roads and infrastructure in, out and through Shepparton to ensure traffic continues to flow without hold-ups. “It is also important that the region retains its experienced mechanics to help train those entering the industry, ensuring that our skill levels are kept high enough to support the industry in to the future.”

manufacturing and other businesses support the local carriers as much as possible. “While the national or multi-national carriers may be able to offer economies of scale this can come at the price of reduced service. And what does service mean in the freight industry? Service means getting it right but often it’s when things go wrong, is when great service is truly highlighted.
“The type of freight we do is a little different to most of the large locally owned operators in the Shepparton area. While some of what we do is the transport of manufactured product from the region, mainly we are bringing in the parts and materials that support other service providers to the manufacturing, farming and building industries in the area.”

Education
EDUCATION is important for growth and without it, industry could not thrive and prosper. According to the latest statistics, almost a third of people across the Goulburn Valley aged over 15 have completed year 12 schooling and over 23,229 people have a tertiary qualification.
Pathways to regional success BUILDING THE REGION THROUGH EDUCATION… La Trobe University head of Shepparton campus, Sue Nalder and GOTAFE CEO, Paul Culpin. Photo: Emma Hillier.
TERTIARY studies are an important pathway that helps to lead the Goulburn Valley’s community directly into the industries that make the region such a success. Between the two of them, GOTAFE and La Trobe University offer 189 courses and see more than 5,700 students attend their campuses each year, who complete their studies and then go on to benefit almost every sector of local industry. Having been in Shepparton since 1996, GOTAFE offers its direct pathways through its courses in business and IT, creative services, education and teaching, health and community, hospitality, events and tourism, manufacturing, rural industries and technical trades. GOTAFE CEO, Paul Culpin said, “We are proud to provide high quality education to the local community. The fact that you can gain nationally accredited qualifications that are recognised by employers and industry right here in Shepparton means our community can grow and prosper. “GOTAFE is proud to be part of the Shepparton and Goulburn Valley communities.
We work closely with local schools and are very proud to be a signatory on a Memorandum of Understanding with the Better Together Alliance made up of Wanganui Park Secondary College, Mooroopna Secondary College, Shepparton High School and McGuire Secondary College.” Opening in Shepparton in 1994, La Trobe University offers courses including bachelor of business (accounting), bachelor of business (management/marketing), bachelor of nursing and bachelor of arts, where students gain placement and employment opportunities with many local organisations, government and industries involved in a variety of sectors. Students can also study the first year of a degree in occupational therapy, paramedicine, physiotherapy, podiatry, and speech pathology in Shepparton before transferring to Bendigo to complete their course. La Trobe University head of Shepparton campus, Sue Nalder said, “Over 80 percent of graduates at La Trobe University obtain employment in the region, adding significantly to the professional and intellectual capital of the community. “We have some new courses coming in 2017, including a bachelor of human services/master of social work, bachelor of early childhood and primary education and the bachelor of business (agribusiness).”

EDUCATING THE REGION… From left, Academy of Sport Health and Education foundation student, Tyson Coonerty, student services, Jamie Atkinson, foundation student, Mazz Saunders, VCAL senior, Alkira Power, manager, Leonie Dwyer and foundation student, Tait Lee. Photo: Emma Hillier.
THE success of any industry within any region starts with good education, and hundreds of students are set to graduate from year 12 this year across the Goulburn Valley. That means there will be another wave of young adults preparing themselves to enter the workforce and contribute to the growth of the region. The Academy of Sport Health and Education (ASHE) in Shepparton has been providing specialised education programs for 12 years with a main aim to engage its students in the community and help lead them into employment to work in industries including community services, health, education, retail and trades. ASHE manager, Leonie Dwyer said, “ASHE is an initiative and program of Rumbalara Football Netball Club together with University of Melbourne, who
along with the 11 staff members at ASHE provide education as well as employment/ careers transition opportunities and getting students ready to make the move into full time/part time employment after graduation. “We play an important part in assisting with the success of local industry by educating the students and helping ready them for employment in those industries. “Education is all about engaging students in the whole community to empower them to be part of the community. “What sets us apart from a regular education provider is that we have developed our own Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander curriculum, which is delivered at ASHE by local Indigenous teachers and staff. It is a culture inclusive course, it’s for everybody.”
Our Goulburn Valley
WITH so many innovative and resourceful businesses across the Goulburn Valley, it is essential for their successes to have dedicated services in automotive and motors, waste, work wear, landscape and gardening, recycling, aged care, garment cleaning, security and freight and transportation services to ensure the continued growth and success of the region.
Fuelling our community spirit SINCE their opening in 1973, Pat & Tina’s BP Service Station has been a much loved part of the Shepparton community not only in the North, but across the region. Pat & Tina’s, as it’s affectionately known, was started by Pat and Tina Di Conza and is one of those rare success stories within an overtly competitive and cutthroat industry. Very few service stations have endured the tests of time the way Pat & Tina’s have and the family have endured their share of heartaches along the way. From floods to family tragedy, sky rocketing petrol prices, discount fuel contenders and the changing self-service industry, but throughout it all, the Di Conza family have remained steadfast. Pat and Tina’s son, Joe Di Conza joined the business in 1988 with his wife Angela joining him in the day-to-day operations after their marriage in 1996. Since his father’s passing in 2003, Joe and Angela have been the face of the business with mum Tina still at their side. Joe said, “I think our survival over such a long period of time can be attributed to the service and the loyalty we have with our customers as well as having had the opportunity to share something so special within our family. “The world has changed over the past 40

odd years. Today it’s more fast paced and hectic and people seem to be weighed down by that. Having a model of service which is the same today as it was 43 years ago when mum and dad started out is important to people. The experience and service which we offer is what means the most to our customers and why they keep on coming back and we haven’t forgotten that.”

AFTER beginning to build their empire in 2008, Mark Shanahan and Dean Jones now service almost all industries across the region and beyond, and have even in recent years expanded their Ultimate Fasteners business, becoming part owners in Ultimate Fasteners in Wodonga. From the manufacturing, engineering and farming industries to the building and dairy industries, Ultimate Fasteners have been supplying nuts and bolts (fasteners), power tools, cutting tools, abrasives, safety equipment including gloves, earmuffs and glasses as well as lifting chains and swings, which have all gone toward helping grow industry not only in the Goulburn Valley, but as far as Swan Hill, Deniliquin, Finley, Seymour, Wangaratta and Echuca.
Dean Jones said, “We’re a locally owned business that employs local people and invests back into the local community. We employ 12 people and will continue to do what we do best, continue to grow and continue to service the local community. “We are very diverse and it makes us proud knowing that we provide support to such a variety of industries and help them to succeed. “We believe we have formed some strong relationships with our customer base and have seen them grow as we have grown. “We are heading towards that mighty 10 years, which is a pretty good achievement for us and that flows back into the local economy.”

Recycling essential to region’s sustainability ACCORDING to the World Steel Association, steel is the most recycled material in the world, with over 650 million tonnes recycled annually, including pre- and postconsumer scrap. Recycling accounts for significant energy and raw material savings with over 1,400kg of iron ore, 740kg of coal, and 120kg of limestone saved for every tonne of steel scrap made into new steel. With nine staff working in the Shepparton yard, Future Metals Recycling has been operating for a decade dropping scrap metal bins throughout the Goulburn Valley, collecting ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal which is then on-sold to domestic and export markets for recycling. Operations manager, Justin Spokes said, “Recycling scrap metals is the most environmentally conscious approach to production and further to that, at Future Metals Recycling we have a strong

Connecting the Goulburn Valley with the country BRINGING people in and out of the region is important in helping to not only showcase what we have on offer and allow people to travel and talk about our Goulburn Valley, but it also helps to keep the community connected to possible business opportunities. Having been a part of the travel industry since 2009, Balfours started with just one school bus and in 17 years has grown to a fleet of seven coaches/buses, now operating educational tours to all parts of Australia, Darwin, Central Australia, Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast, the Victorian snowfields of Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and the NSW snowfields of Thredbo, Perisher and Mt Kosciusko. The Airport Direct component was started in Shepparton in approximately
2006, but Balfour’s didn’t acquire it until 2013, today operating this service to and from Mooroopna and Shepparton seven days a week and twice daily. Mooroopna Balfours Airport Direct owner, Leonard Balfour said, “We have grown with the needs of the community and do what we can to ensure that the Goulburn Valley is connected with the country. “We believe the Airport Direct section of the business is a cost effective way to and from Melbourne airport and hope in the future to be able to expand to additional services. “We enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of the Goulburn Valley and the many people we have become associated with.”

BROTHERS and co-directors, Phil and Rob Priestly have developed Gouge Linen & Garment Services into an industry leader. Their innovative production facility is in Mooroopna, where the majority of their 160 staff provide linen and garment services to health care, hospitality, food processing and industrial clients. An average 165 tonnes of textiles are processed each week. The retail dr y cleaning plant in Shepparton is a clear reminder of the company’s origins. Now with linen distribution centres in Geelong and Bendigo and a catchment encompassing most of Victoria, Phil and Rob continue to look for growth opportunities. In an increasingly competitive industry, Gouge Linen & Garment Services is raising its market share due to its focus on customer service and delivering a high quality product. Phil is also quick to credit their skilled and committed staff when discussing the success of the business. Phil said, “We have always been lucky to attract great people. They work hard, have an impressive skill set and regularly contribute time and fundraising efforts for our local community.” This same community provides integral
