community, although reduced to nine holes again while 00 years ago, Shepparton was little more than a country village, much of the area now built the old clubhouse built in 1927 was occupied by the RAAF upon as a thriving regional city was farmland and remnants of earlier pastoral selections established at a time when more and more European settlers were beginning to find a home in for the duration. In the early 1950s, plans for a new clubhouse were the region. A growing pastime for some of the more gentrified was engaging in hitting a golf ball around driving ranges that had been carved into the natural bush surrounds of what was then Crown land and known as Shepparton Park as well as across some of the surrounding farming properties. In April of 1922, a number of the more dedicated enthusiasts decided at a meeting at the Mechanics Institute in Wyndham Street to form a club and on 5th April 1922, recorded the first minutes of the meeting of the newly formed Shepparton Golf Club. Office bearers were elected from the fifteen people in attendance. The first President elected was TN Muntz. The first couple of years were off to a rocky start as a lengthy dry season gave rise to enforced inactivity for the club throughout 1923.
It was not until 1925 that the first club championship was contested, won by local bank manager George L. Swan. The following year saw the first Open Tournament conducted over two days with men and women competing. With an intervening depression and a world war, development of the course slowed considerably, yet in 1932 with acquisition of some of the adjacent farmland, the course was able to be redesigned from its original nine holes into an 18 hole course. The war brought the
drawn up and in 1958 construction began that was opened on April 6 1960 by His Excellency the Governor of Victoria, General Sir Dallas Brooks KCB, KCMG, KCVO, DSO, KSTJ with the President at the time, the Hon Peter Ross Edwards. It was also around this time that plans to construct the bowling greens came to fruition.

the making With increased improvements to the grounds and the greens, massive changes to the landscape as plant trees grew, extensions to the buildings and upgrading of maintenance facilities, the Shepparton Golf Club has grown to be counted among the top courses in Australia. These works were almost brought undone when fire Exhibition Golfers in the rain destroyed a large part of - Lloyd Wright, Bertie Clay, Len Woodward & Barry West the building and on - 16.07.1958 January 19, 2014. The recovery however has seen a chance to improve
the overall amenity of the facility when it re-opened in October that same year. As golf became one of the country's premier sporting pastimes, membership has hovered around 1,000 for the last several years providing many Shepparton residents with access to a top recreational facility while producing golfers that go on to play in international professional competitions. It has been 100 years in the making and no doubt, will go on for another 100 years or more providing Shepparton residents access to a premier sporting and social facility.

One of Shepparton’s long-lasting golf legends Jeane Dainton, born in 1925
J
EANE Dainton became a member of the Shepparton Golf Club in 1955 and remains the oldest and longest continuous member of the club to this time. Jeane joined the club when the current 17th was the first tee. Then, the clubhouse was positioned at the back of the 17th and the greens were all sandscapes. She decided to try golf after having played tennis and basketball. No one else in her family was a golfer at that time, so Jeanne and her friend Alva Chessells turned up to have a go. Norm Wilson, the greenkeeper, gave the girls a lesson, and he must have done a good job because they immediately headed into town to buy their gear and begin their golfing journey. At that time, there were few lady golfers, but Wednesday was their day. The ladies had to adhere to the strict dress code which stipulated skirts below the knee worn with the club jumper. A bus would run out to collect the ladies who didn’t drive. After golf there was no lunch, just tea and biscuits. Jeane remembers the old clubhouse with holes in the floor and an old wood stove. Those on hostess duty would place the cups in the oven so that the players could enjoy a nice hot cup of tea! When Jeane first started competitions, she and
her friend would go out early and practise hitting up and back on the 17th, in front of the clubhouse. She soon learned this was strictly forbidden, after being reprimanded by one of the committee members. On April 4, 1960, the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks, opened a new clubhouse on its present site. Jeane became involved with committees, and she served as handicapper, secretary, captain in 1977-78 and pennant captain, and as presdeint from 1980 until 1982. Jeane was made a Life Member in 1984. During Jean Turnbull’s presidency in 1968 and ‘69, the wearing of ‘slacks’ became a contentious issue among the ladies with much discussion, sometimes heated, over whether or not ladies could wear trousers. A compromise was met when it was decided that ladies could wear trousers as long as they were tailored and from Fletcher Jones. Jeane herself believed that skirts should continue to be the uniform, but eventually came around when she realised that we needed to, “move with the times.” However, when one day a lady turned up with the bottoms of her trousers tied up with hay bands, it could not be overlooked, and she was politely told that this was unacceptable! When Jeane was Captain, she can remember another controversy over the playing of games on a Sunday. She recalls that a match in a 4BBB knock-out had to be played on a Sunday to fit into the schedule, which was fiercely
opposed by one of the ladies. After Jeane carefully read the rule book, she informed the lady that there was no rule which said a match COULDN’T be played on a Sunday, and it went ahead. When the lady found out about it afterwards, she tore strips off Jeane, but too late, the deed was done! Jeane has made many friends through golf over her 65+ years as a proud member of the SGC and is a legend of the club. At the grand age of 96, she still attends special Ladies’ functions and regularly goes to lunch, enjoying her meal and a glass of red. Jeane’s grandson Chris Dainton is also a member and no doubt the family involvement will continue well into the future through her nine (and counting) great-grandchildren. Pictured above: LIVING LEGEND... Jeane Dainton, born in 1925, remains one of Shepparton Golf Club’s longest continuous members. She has seen and contributed to SGC’s ongoing growth, where golfers can enjoy a modern, stylish clubhouse and amenities, tasty meals, and stunning views. Photo: Supplied.

Major events organised to celebrate club centenary M
arking the centenary of the Shepparton Golf Club, a number of events will be taking place. Starting off on Tuesday, April 5, there will be an invitation-only luncheon to be held at the club.
Following on from that, on Saturday, April 9, there will be a Centenary Gala Dinner held at the club to enable members to join together to celebrate this extraordinary milestone in the club's history and tickets are now available. Guests will be seated on tables of eight for this "once in a century event" and places will be keenly sought after, so
please contact the office and book your table or seats as required. Tickets cost $75 per person and a three-course dinner will be provided. No centenary of a golf club would be complete without playing a few rounds of golf, so there will be a golf-day on Sunday, April 10, which will request players to come in period dress symbolising an era within the last 100 years. This will be a chance for players to break out their plusfours and tartan socks to complete the look of a bygone era. Another event will include the 25 year internment of a time capsule in July. Envelopes will be available online very shortly for this event at $25 each per envelope.

Timeline of the Shepparton Golf Club A
lthough golf was played prior to World War I, the Shepparton Golf Club, as now located, did not begin continuous registration with the Victorian Golf Association (VGA) until 1922. It's origin then coincides with the golden age of golf when between the two world wars, the sport captured the interest of the people throughout the world.

Golf Australia - Vision 2025 A
S it is with many clubs around Australia, changes are being made to address women and girls participation in the game of golf. Shepparton Golf Club proudly supports Golf Australia’s Vision 2025 to make golf a sport where women and girls are inspired to participate, feel welcomed and nurtured throughout and empowered to achieve their goals.
In February 2018, Golf Australia launched a strategy to address a fundamental imbalance in the game and draw more women and girls to golf - Vision 2025. The four main pillars of Vision 2025 are: 1. Culture and leadership: More women on boards and in senior positions; opening up clubhouses and courses and making them more welcoming – equal access, equal rights. 2. Grassroots: Introductions to golf that are friendlier and more social; more emphasis on fun and family; better transition to courses and clubs; hubs and networks for women and girls. 3. High performance and coaching: More heroes to inspire the next generation; more female coaches to nurture and develop them; more chances for the elite to compete and hone their skills.
4. Marketing and positioning: Changing the way the sport is perceived; more women and girls proud to say ‘I play golf’; promoting the fun, healthy, social game – a second sport and a sport for life. Through Vision 2025, Golf Australia intends to introduce and retain more women and girls in golf through innovative, inspiring, needs based and age and gender appropriate programs, pathways and access to quality coaching. 2022 CLUB COMMITTEE MEMBERS - pictured from left, property chairman David Reed, treasurer Keith Rae, club president David Collier, social committee chairperson Anne Pegg, chairman of course and greens, Ron Wilkinson, club captain Peter Toy and lady president Suzi Phillips-Limon. Nifty’s nocturnal classic by Neville Lavis
T
he Nocturnal Classic started some 27 years ago and has been in the syllabus ever since, enjoyed my many.
Its origin started one night in 1995 when a group of members of the Shepparton Golf Club snuck out to the club one evening only to find the general committee was meeting, people were everywhere and as we hadn’t arranged night time access, we all went down to the 4th Tee and hit off there. The night was a success and plans were then put into place to get permission to run a competition in the dark. The original plan of doing 3 holes by day, dinner, then 6 holes by night has continued. Being an Ambrose event, the first two teams hit off at 6 pm, then dinner and finish off the remaining 6 holes with a shot gun start just before 9 pm. As the night balls have a light stick inside them, they can be seen for a considerable distance and look spectacular in flight. At presentations later

in the night every player takes home a special prize. Could even be a bucket and spade as we believed they weren’t ever going to get on the American golf circuit As the night is a fun competition, we have over the years arranged challenges for the golfers which include, hitting off a halfinflated car tube, hitting off a half-inflated car tube with a board over it. Putting with 1 hand on the first three holes by day and using a special club made of steel. The best being the Happy Gilmore for the first hit of the
night, with the player moving forward while hitting the ball. As this is the 1st drive of the day everyone is watching and even some of the best golfers have difficulty connecting with the ball when moving. The best ever Happy Gilmore was Leighton Lyle last year who hit a monster shot on the 10th tee down to the corner, a staggering 265 meters, I don’t think it will ever be beaten. In 2014 after the fire had destroyed out club house, we used a temporary marque at the back of the 18th green and this wasn’t going to deter our spirits. The only problem was we had a team of indoor cricketers staying at the motel and their involvement was to play up on the 1st night of their trip by hitting tennis balls around the marque while presentations were being arranged and in progress. It added a new dimension. On the 25th year we celebrated the night by having our dinner on the 6th Tee, the night was barmy, and the setting was sensational, and everyone had a memorable time dining with nature. As the Nifty’s Nocturnal Classic is a fun
night, it has created a lot of fond memories over the time and will hopefully continue being well patronised.
