Pillar of parliament Hicks Transport invests to exit politics
big in Shepparton
AFTER being a pillar of parliament in the community for 20 years, Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone has announced she will be retiring from parliament at the next election, leaving the seat open to be contested. During her time in the seat, Dr Stone helped SPC Ardmona secure a $25M assistance package to help the prominent business continue operations and saw the introduction of bulk billing. HOME RAZED… The McConnell family of Carag Carag lost everything when their home was razed by fire recently. Photo: Melanie Spencer.
They’ve lost their home but not their spirit
By David Lee AFTER a fire razed their family home in Carag Carag last week, the McConnell family have been left without a home and fewer members of their family, with some of their pets either killed in the fire or still missing. Janeane McConnell, her husband Neil and her two adult sons Michael and Steve were sitting down for dinner on the night of Sunday, March 20 when they noticed smoke and a glow coming through their LED lights in the roof at 8pm. Nine crews from Rushworth, Stanhope, Kyabram, Corop and Colbinabbin attended the scene, along with equipment support from Bendigo, but the home could not be saved. Only moments after escaping the burning
house, the family watched as the roof collapsed. CFA fire investigator, John Cutting said the family was initially unaware of the danger above. “They didn’t know there was a fire until the lights went out. “They then noticed a glow coming from the ceiling down-lights and that’s when they’ve gone outside and noticed the flames coming from the roof. “Because the fire was above the ceiling, the home’s smoke detectors hadn’t yet activated.” A close friend of the family, Lyndsay Dunn said, “They managed to save most of their pets but lost one of their gorgeous oriental cats in the fire and three are still missing with
two kittens. “In the haste to evacuate they were unable to get any belongings and Janeane didn’t even get a chance to put shoes on. They’ve lost everything. “The people in this family are the kindest I’ve ever known and will do anything for anyone and accept nothing in return. “I have set up a Go Fund Me page to try and raise some funds to help them get back on their feet. I am also going to run an online auction to raise funds to help as well. “The family really wants to thank the CFA and local community for banding together and doing what they can to help.” To show your support and donate, visit www.gofund.me/ckv2yr64

Shepparton plays budget waiting game WITH the announcement that the Victorian State Budget has been brought forward to Wednesday, April 27, Shepparton is playing the waiting game in anticipation of the announcement of dedicated funding toward the much needed redevelopment of GV Health. Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed says the visit by Victorian Treasurer, Tim Pallas recently cemented what had been 12 months of lobbying for funds to redevelop GV Health. During his visit, Mr Pallas said that in the event the multi-million dollar funding was not forthcoming in the upcoming state budget, he would have “nowhere to hide.” Whilst in Shepparton, Mr Pallas also had private briefings from Committee for Greater Shepparton chairman, David McKenzie on the need for action on the Shepparton Bypass and met City of Greater Shepparton CEO, Peter Harriott, who outlined a range of local issues including the Shepparton CBD revitalisation project. Ms Sheed also reinforced the case to the treasurer for more frequent rail services and better rolling stock for Shepparton, which she said had languished behind Bendigo,

Judy Beckingham and Katrina Mills of DOT Z E duc at iona l a nd Sp ecia l Needs Products, opened their store with the Renew’ program in August last year. Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry executive officer, Lucy Cerrone said, “It’s fantastic to see the business that was part of Renew’ flourish and now be able to operate in their own right. “This outcome makes it all worthwhile for both the landlord and the proprietor. “This is good for the big picture and if this can be replicated the project will be a huge success.”

“He’s been through hell and back” Local family opens their hearts and home to neglected Dozer

SAVING DOZER… Kirsty and Ed Miller with Bordeaux Mastiff, Dozer, who they saved from a neglecting situation five months ago and who is now on the track to good health. Photo: Emma Hillier.
By David Lee HE is only 21 months old and already Bordeaux Mastiff, Dozer has been to hell and back, but thanks to the Miller family in Shepparton, he is back on the path to a healthy, happy life. It was five months ago when Kirsty and Ed Miller found Dozer at a home in Benalla where he was being neglected, weighing under half his normal weight for his age at 29kg, as well as suffering from a long list of issues. The two couldn’t turn away. After speaking with Dozer’s owners, the Millers took on the responsibility of bringing Dozer back to full health. Kirsty and Ed said, “When we found him he had no hair on his back, had issues with his skin, ears, a yeast infection, ear infections and was severely anorexic. And that’s only part of the list. “The vets told us that had we found him one week later, he wouldn’t have made it. The poor boy has been through hell and back. “It’s been an uphill and downhill battle with him and we have spent more than $1,000 to help get him to where he is today. He just hit 41kg, which we are thrilled about.
POOR PUP… Dozer one week after the Miller family took him in. Photo: Supplied.
“He’s a mummy’s boy now. He formed a bond with us instantly and is very much a part of our family. “Considering what he has been through, he is so placid and is everybody’s friend.” To show your support, or provide any assistance search for ‘Help for Dozer’ on Facebook.

Elderly Drivers On Our Roads
Dear Editor, An elderly Victorian motorist reported by a policeman for “driving at 40km/h on a road posted at 60km/h.” As everyone knows a motorist driving at 40km/h on a road posted at 60km/h is headed for dementia. VicRoads ordered him to see a doctor and while at it see an optometrist and take a driving test. He still retains his licence. The elderly Victorian motorist – fined for driving over 60km/h, sent to the doctor for driving under 60km/h. He appealed to his God for advice. A voice boomed from the heavens - “Catch 22! Keep it for the next Monty Python Show.” It is pleasing to note that an email from a prominent Victorian politician has added his voice to the chorus - forward from his Secretary - “In his experience, he has found older drivers to be courteous and cautious on the road.” “They do not impose any more risk than any other age group.” Yours sincerely, Gerald Bleasdale Kyabram
Sorry To See Councillor Go
Dear Editor, I am sorry to see that Fern Summer will not be putting her hand up for re-election at the Greater Shepparton City Council elections. She is a person who looks at the needs of the community at heart, such as improved medical facilities, better footpaths, etc. Others are more interested in their own selfish wants, such as many of our influential egocentric folk who want things like the new SAM, when we already have a SAM which was recently upgraded at over a million dollars. Thank you Fern for your contribution and I hope Shepparton will hear more of you into the future. Do we have any folk willing to have a go at being a councillor with similar sensibility to Fern, I hope so? Yours sincerely, Rodney Champness Mooroopna Want to have your say? If thIs ad Is so Important, why’s It so small? Over 150,000 Victorians have cancer. Our job at the Cancer Council Helpline is to provide as much help and support as these people need. Which doesn’t leave much money to publicise the service. But you can help. If you know someone that needs our help, please ask them to give us a call and speak to a cancer nurse.

WITH the start of the deb season, it’s not only the girls’ outfits which need to be considered. Talisman Menswear proprietor and suit guru, Paul Jerome is all set to fit suits to the partners, dads, cousins and uncles who will be attending as well. “We are fortunate enough to cater to almost all of the debs in the area, and can hire out top-of-the-line, pure wool suits, through to a selection of suits for purchase at different price points,” Paul said. “Our major point of difference is the in-store tailoring that we provide, as it is rare that a suit will fit every body type. “Another distinct service we offer is that we can mix and match different sized pants, vests and jackets. Once again, not everyone fits all the components of an outfit in the one size.”

WHEN you enter the recently revamped SPC Ardmona Factory Sales outlet, you will instantly notice the expansive feel of the place. With the closure of Peaches Café, SPC Ardmona Factory Sales has not only extended into this space, but they’ve also changed the layout considerably, installed brighter lights and introduced a new price ticketing system. “We think this layout is much more visually appealing and user friendly for customers trying to source our products,” SPC Ardmona Factory Sales proprietor, Samuel Prentice said. “As a result of the lowered shelving at the front, people now have a visual overview of the store. “We’ve even noticed this creates more of a buzz for shoppers, as there is not as much sense of diving into the dark recesses of those isolated, tall corridors. “In fact, I would say this change back to
pallet stacking feels similar to the design of the original Mooroopna store.” More floor space has also allowed the store to add more products and a wider selection of brands. “We believe we have an ever growing range of well known products and brands at prices that will absolutely save you money when you shop with us, before going to the supermarket. Give us a go and find out for yourself!” To see the enhancements and grab a bargain, drop in to SPC Ardmona Factory Sales, 197-205 Corio Street or phone 5821 7033. Horror stories increase investment urgency AS horror stories emerge surrounding waiting times at GV Health’s emergency department, Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell is urging the Andrews Labor Government to invest in a redevelopment immediately. Ms Lovell said, “I was contacted recently by a member of the community with a story of the unreasonable wait he experienced in the emergency department over the Labour Day long weekend. “He advised me that he waited seven hours with a torn hamstring on the Sunday of the long weekend, and when he was finally seen he was told to come back on the Tuesday, after the public holiday, for a scan.”
Ms Lovell said the patient also told her of other people with painful injuries who were waiting longer than they should have, including one man who said he waited nine hours with his upper leg sliced open to the bone. “The wait these patients were forced to endure was as a direct result of the capacity limitations of the current hospital, and enough is enough. “The government needs to immediately commit to redeveloping and expanding our hospital, so that people, especially those needing emergency care, can be treated within a reasonable timeframe.”

Advances in cabinet design for the whole home SPECIALISED HARDWARE AND LIGHTING… Liberty Kitchens sales consultant, Sarah Nicholson with a lighting display. Photo: Emma Hillier.
SOFT close is a feature that has had a lot of talk in the cabinet making industry for some time. Options are available for both doors and drawers, where cabinets softly close without the definite bang of conventional hardware. “The best choice is a solid drawer system that has a reasonable weight tolerance of around 50kg per drawer. This means less wear and tear and the runners don’t have to struggle,” Liberty Kitchens senior sales estimator, Dawn Rayner said. “Canned foods, for example, are quite
Page 20 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1296 Wednesday, March 30, 2016
weighty. A system that offers full extension is the best choice, as all items are brought forward and therefore are a breeze to access. There’s no lifting out the item in front to get to the one behind. “We at Liberty Kitchens have trialled a number of options, as they have been released by hardware manufacturers. Some were dismal failures. It took time to find a solution, but it was worth it, to come up with a range that our customers and our cabinetry team are confident in. Lighting has also seen major advances in
the last few years with LEDs becoming the choice. Lighting under the overhead cabinets in a kitchen can make all the difference, giving light where it is needed most. No longer are you working in your own shadow. “Lighting can also be used for visual effect, lighting display cabinet interiors and niches or used to outline a cabinetry feature,” Dawn said. To experience first-hand quality options call in and see the team at Liberty Kitchens 60 Williams Road, Shepparton or phone 5831 2620.

Horse lovers alert MANY locals have been taught to ride by Toni Gough, since she first began training horse riders at the age of 18, but the public may not be aware that the Shepparton Equestrian Centre offers much more than lessons. “We have the capacity now to hire out the whole facility, including an indoor arena, dressage arena, secure training arena, six stables, a showjumping paddock and more,” Toni said. And to showcase the facility, the Shepparton Equestrian Centre is holding an Open Day on Saturday, April 2 from 10am to 3pm.

“We’ll also have displays from Bertolis, A One Landscape Supplies, SJA and Homerz, all of which can supply products and services for small horse farms. Horseland will also be there, offering a selection of specials on their equipment and clothes. “These are all businesses which have supported us in the building of the centre, so we are able to highly recommend their services. Something quite unique to the day is the inclusion of a display of old tractors by Ken Ford. There will also be a catering van for the hungry.
But in the end, for Toni, it is all about bringing horses and people together. Although the centre has produced a number of national and state champions, Toni says it doesn’t have to be competitive. “I really enjoy teaching students of all ages and standards, helping them improve themselves and supporting their journey with the horses.” To check out the Open Day, head down to the Shepparton Equestrian Centre, 850 Mitchell Road, Kialla East or phone 0403 731 232.

Renovated emergency department opens its doors A F T ER beginning a $700,000 t ra nsfor mat ion i n Aug ust last yea r, a redeveloped GV Health emergency department officially re-opened last week. The expansion, which was conducted in response to public feedback about the need for improved and expanded facilities for patients waiting for treatment and their families or carers, will help to cater for the 36,000 people who utilise the emergency department each year. T he new a nd i mproved emergenc y department now boasts three cubicles redesigned to meet the specific needs of children and families with windows and doors made from switchable glass to provide privacy and security, which are themed with jungle, space and under water motifs to help distract the almost 12,000 children using the department each year. A new access point was also created from the emergency department into the imaging department to streamline the movement of patients in and out of the department. As part of the works, the nursing station overlooking the short-stay beds was upgraded to offer better oversight of patients, but the most noticeable difference has been the expansion of the waiting area by 25 square meters, which now includes 20 additional seats and a child friendly play area. GV Health CEO, Dale Fraser said the renovations were funded by community donations to help improve patient flow

Community contributions for the renovations totalled approximately $700,000 and included a $454,000 donation from the GV Health Foundation, $85,000 from Shepparton Central Rotary Club, $10,000 from Tatura Milk, $7,000 from Blokes and Boats as well as anonymous donors and other community donations. “ We’re now e a gerly awa it i ng t he announcement of the state budget next month, where we are hoping to see more funding allocated for the hospital upgrade to help improve the environment even more for patients and staff.”

WITH a keen eye for cosmetic detail, balance and symmetry, Dr Shah Awang (FRACGP) has pursued his passion into cosmetic surgery. A qualified GP, with almost a decade’s ex perience, Dr Awa ng has recently undertaken further cosmetic training with a dermatologist and plastic surgeon in Melbourne, and holds a Certificate of Dermoscopy and Skin Cancer and a Diploma in Dermatology. “I enjoy beauty and aesthetics, and working in this field I am able to make people happy,” Dr Awang said. His knowledge in facial cosmetic medicine extends particularly to the processes of the ageing face and how to halt and reverse these effects and the science behind what constitutes a beautiful or handsome face. “I am able to use this understanding to enhance the universal attractiveness of all faces.”
Dr Awang is keen to promote the latest technology in thread facial lifts, which offers a cheaper and less invasive alternative to more traditional methods. “Silhouette Soft is a new technique out of the USA, which uses sutures to stimulate collagen production. “The procedure takes only 30 minutes, under local anesthetic, and the effects last approximately one and a half years.” Dr Awang’s other specialty area is the diagnosis and removal of both benign and cancerous skin lesions. “This can often be a very complex procedure and it’s important to have the training and experience to minimise scars, particularly on the face.” For your free initial consultation with Dr Awang, contact Wyndham House Clinic, 96 Maude Street, Shepparton on 5820 3400.

The wedding anniversary A MUST SEE… Joe and Kellie in Rhodes. The medieval city is a must see. COMFORT AND STYLE… The cruise ship, MSC Fantasia accommodates four and half thousand passengers in style and comfort. WHEN IN ROME… In Rome, a must see is Colosseum. The ancient building was used to stage battles for the public with special chambers underground to house the animals before coming into public view. BRIGHTLY ALLUMINATED… Paris and the Eiffel Tower. Of a night, it stands out like a beacon brightly illuminated. SPECIAL SIGHTS… Kellie just loved the many sights they saw in Jerusalem. It was a very special part of their tour.
JOE and Kellie Marsters from Shepparton were about to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversar y and they were looking for something special, perhaps Italy, Greece or Paris. They decided on all three, settling on a cruise. Their first stop was Rome and it was wonderful. They toured all the major sights including the Colosseum, Parthenon, Roman Forum and the Vatican City, followed by a visit to the Trevi Fountain, where they tossed in a coin to celebrate their anniversary. Then they moved on to the port city of Civitavecchia to board their ship, the MSC Fantasia. Joe could only describe the ship as opulent. With four and a half thousand passengers, the Fantasia is big, as is the food. It was excellent and so was the on-board entertainment. Their ports of call included Genoa with its ancient Piazza De Ferrari. Joe and Kellie just loved the history as they explored the streets of ancient buildings. Then they sailed to Greece. Their first stop was Katakolon and nearby Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic Games. Again they loved the history with the many ancient buildings, where contestants would ready themselves for their sport and the original running track where many of the Olympic events were held. The nex t stop was Athens with the Acropolis standing proud overlooking the city below. Joe says it’s a great place to visit and the new museum displays many great works from classical Greece. Joe and Kellie found the visit very interesting. After all this was the birthplace of Western civilisation and democracy. From Athens to Rhodes, a medieval town with narrow streets including the Street of Knights and the Palace of The Grand Master. The original palace was destroyed in an explosion but later rebuilt in 1912, during the Italian occupation of Rhodes. Now, a complete change of pace saw the pair sail to Jerusalem. Joe had always
wanted to visit Israel and it seemed many of his fellow passengers felt the same. Many of the cruise ships had taken Israel off their ports of call but now it was back on. Joe and Kellie found it fascinating. They visited the Western or Wailing Wall. Joe says he even had to don that small cap to be allowed in. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was special and so was the ancient city of Masada, and of course no visit to Israeli would be complete without seeing the Mount of Olives. Their cruise ship, the Fantasia, now set sail on the return leg to Rome giving the couple a chance to see more of the eternal city. Next they flew to Paris. All along the way Joe had been aware of a strong police/ security presence but in Paris it really stood out. The recent Isis killings have taken their toll on the feeling of freedom in Paris but people seemed determined not to let the terrorists win. Joe and Kellie felt the same and soon found themselves swept up by the sights. They visited the Eif fel Tower, Champs Elysees, The Louvre and its incredible works of art including the Mona Lisa and of course Notre Dame. All too soon it was time to fly home, but they certainly had celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in style and had seen so much of a very special part of the world. Joe’s only concern is with the huge amount of refugees flooding into Europe. Will it remain the same? That’s why they decided to see what they could now. For Joe and Kellie the highlight was Israel and the many holy places of Jerusalem and they both would like to thank Bek Smith and Helloworld Travel in Shepparton for doing a great job in organising everything. Until next time, Safe Travel’n, Geoff Vallance

ROUND 1 WINNER: JOANNE MARSH Football Followers have the chance to WIN BIG during the 2016 AFL football season with the Viatek/The Adviser Football Tipping Competition proudly supported by 18 businesses throughout the Goulburn Valley. Each week there will be a prize of $100 to be spent at any of the 18 supporting business houses. Each of the 18 participating business houses corresponds with one of the AFL football clubs. All you have to do is write the name of each participating business beside the team they are representing and then place a tick against the football team that you think will win each game. Be careful with your selections as only correct entries will go into the draw for the weekly $100 shopping voucher. If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted. Draws between two teams will only be recognised if a tick is placed beside both teams. Entries will only be accepted by post or hand delivery no later than 5.00pm on each Friday during 2016, unless stated otherwise due to matches being played outside the normal weekend. Entries must be on original forms – no faxes or photocopies will be accepted and only one entry per household is permitted. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
