Local workers back-paid more than $34,000 T W EN TY-THREE workers across the Goulburn Valley have been back-paid more than $34,000 in wages and entitlements after seeking assistance from the Fair Work Ombudsman. In one matter, a worker at an automotive repair and maintenance business in Kyabram was dismissed without being paid his lawful entitlements of notice of termination, annual leave and long service leave. The Fair Work Ombudsman intervened and the business agreed to pay the employee

an amount of $11,602. In a separate matter, a full-time employee in Kyabram who was made redundant was not given redundancy payments as his employer believed the small business was exempt and was made to pay the employee $8,000. In another matter, the agency assisted 19 wait staff at a Shepparton restaurant who had been underpaid a combined $8,207. Ten of these employees were aged between 16 and 19.

Two apprentices working as electrical contractors in the Cobram area had also been underpaid $6,725, which was rectified. Fair Work Ombudsman, Natalie James said each business was now on notice that further mistakes could result in serious enforcement action, such as litigation and the potential for hefty penalties. “There is a wealth of free advice and educational material on our website and we have a dedicated small business infoline so there is absolutely no excuse for making these

mistakes,” Ms James said. “In each of these cases it was the first time the business had come to our attention and each quickly rectified the issues so we determined that lengthy court proceedings were not necessary in these circumstances. “However, we revisit businesses that have been found non-compliant and these operators have been warned that if they continue to make mistakes, they can expect to be subject to court proceedings or an enforceable undertaking,” Ms James said.

Competitors called to skate the jungle LOCALS who have skating talent are being called on to take part in the upcoming 3630 Concrete Jungle Skate Competition, with the chance to win the $500 first prize. Greater Shepparton City Council and headspace Shepparton have been working with Shepparton Skate Park Riders Young Adults Committee and pro athlete skateboard rider, MC Renton Miller to create the competition, which will run from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, October 14 at the Shepparton Skate Park. Shepparton Skate Park Riders young adults committee member, Joel Walsh said, “The skate park has so much potential and we have so many talented riders, all we need is good comp and opportunities for the riders to show their talent and potentially make a career out of it.” Pro athlete skateboard rider, MC Renton Miller said, “I’m stoked to work with the Shepparton Skate Park Committee on the 3630 Concrete Jungle Competition. It’s a great skate park and it will be a great vibe. I’m really looking forward to it!” head spac e Sheppa r ton com mu n it y awareness officer, Leah Farnham said, “The 3630 Concrete Jungle Skate Competition is a great way for local young people and the general community to get together to

show support and encouragement for young people in Greater Shepparton. Hopefully the competition is an opportunity to close the gap between generations, and for the general community to notice and appreciate the young people of Greater Shepparton and the amazing skills, hard work and contribution they make to the community.” Greater Shepparton City Council Youth Development Officer, Jessica Kirwin said, “Every year we aim to run programs to appeal to all different groups of young people within our community. This year we are so lucky to have a bunch of great young and engaged adults who utilise the Shepparton skate park and are so focused on wanting to make it a better space for the community. “All young people are encouraged to register on the day, and riders under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent. “The prizes on offer will hopefully entice local talent to compete, with $500 on offer for first prize in the Open Skate heat and Open BMX heat, and additional prizes for second and third place.” Entry into the competition costs $1 and registrations will be taken on the day. For further information, contact Jessica Kirwin on (03)5832 9779, or Leah Farnham on (03)5823 8800.

Hicks wins Murray Bushrangers John Byrne medal SHEPPARTON United’s Angus Hicks has won the Murray Bushrangers TAC Cup Best and Fairest, and was awarded the John Byrne Medal with the presentation held at the weekend. Ben Paton (North Albury) and Jordon Butts (Shepparton Bears) were equal runners up. Hicks enjoyed a consistent year polling votes in all but three of his games played. What made the achievement even more significant was the fact that Hicks joined the squad in 2017 as a top age player for the first time. Both Jordon Butts and Ben Paton also performed well considering they missed a block of four matches due to the U18 NAB National Championships representing Victoria Country. The presentation evening also saw Lachlan Ash (Shepparton Bears) take out the U16 Most Valuable Player, Zane Barzon (Shepparton United) take out the Trainers Award, Tom Boyd (Nathalia) take out Most Improved, Daniel Johnston (Barooga) take out the Leading Goal Kicker, Kyle Clarke (Shepparton United) take out the Ashley Cox U17 Award and Daniel Bond (Wodonga Raiders) take out the Coaches Award. Murray Bushrangers team manager and stalwart volunteer, Greg Laidlaw was Master of Ceremonies for the event which included interviewing past player and current North Melbourne footballer, Jy Simpkin. Simpkiin highlighted how the Murray Bushrangers supported his development despite missing most of 2016 from injury during his draft year. “This year we also enjoyed seeing so many young people receive recognition for outstanding performance in business across the board. Smashing health and fitness goals By Nicholise Garner SPR I NGT I M E brings people out of hibernation and often it’s a great time to create some fitness and health goals. For Fernwood Fitness member, Kate Ismail, her goals kicked into play at the start of this year. Kate said, “At the start of the year I joined the Fernwood Fitness 12 week weight loss challenge and that was just the best thing I could’ve done for myself. Thanks to Fernwood’s childcare program I was able to let my little boy have a play while I worked out and as a part of that team, I was given a meal plan, specialised workouts as well as so much support and encouragement. Since then I have lost 18kg and am just thrilled with the result. I feel so much happier and have made wonderful friendships.” The environment at Fernwood Fitness is very open and homely. As I talked to Kate about her success, Fernwood gym members

were casually making breakfast in the kitchen space that looks as though it could double as a café. I was pretty surprised by this and Kate told me that Fernwood supply toast, fruit, cereal, tea, coffee and juice to their members to help themselves to breakfast. Fernwood Fitness Shepparton owner, Danni Whitaker said, “Kate is just one example of many success stories here. I’d like to invite ladies to come along see our facilities and to have a talk about their fitness needs. There’s no better time to get started on your fitness journey than now.” For more i n formation, d rop i nto Fernwood Fitness Shepparton at 290 High Street, Shepparton or phone 5821 2405. 18 KG LOST JUST THIS YEAR… Fernwood Fitness gym member, Kate Ismail is brimming with pride at her weight loss achievements and is thrilled to be a part of the Fernwood Fitness team. Student’s feet hit pavement to raise funds STUDENTS from two local primary schools have put on their running shoes in a bid to help raise much needed funds for their schools, with the combined fundraising total reaching $7,311.93. Verney Road Special School students have raised $4,458.34 for their school after hosting a CUA School Fun Run, while Mooroopna Park Primary School students have raised $2,853.59. In the lead-up to the event, students pounded the pavement and raised funds online by seeking sponsorship from their local community. CUA School Fun Run organiser, Matthew said the teachers were excited to get behind a fundraising activity that promoted such a healthy interaction with the community and taught kids about setting and achieving financial goals. “Not only could everyone get out of the classroom and exercise, but the students were keen to set and meet their fundraising targets so they could earn prizes like scooters and sporting equipment which of course promote further healthy activity. “Parents enthusiastically supported the initiative as it steered their kids away from traditional fundraising efforts which often involve selling junk food,” Matthew said.
