Shepparton almost leading the state in vaccination rates AS reported through the Federal Department of Health, Shepparton is amongst the highest vaccinated population in the state with 92.9 percent of the eligible community having received their second dose of the Covid vaccine and has the third highest number after Geelong and Warnambool. Getting nearer to the state targets of 90 percent vaccination, health departments have stopped providing daily reports on the pandemic and are now looking at the next phases as we move forward towards recovery. Shepparton is still recording a high number of cases of people testing positive (although numbers have not been advertised and these are largely among those unvaccinated) but this has not stopped those SOURCE: who are vaccinated from beginning to enjoy life again. Pental goes natural premium! A STRATEGIC move made earlier this year has seen local manufacturer, Pental acquire Australian-made premium, personal care brand Bondi Soap, with a view to diversify their product offering. Relaunched in September after an extensive redevelopment of the range, the brand has seen a full external makeover including all new branding and packaging. Each individual product has also been reformulated with the intention to ensure that 100 percent of the ingredients used are sustainably sourced, natural (plant-based), planet-friendly and cruelty-free. The move comes as a part of Pental’s business strategy to diversify their brand offering, enabling the business to appeal to a broad range of market segments, explained Site Manager Carmine Conte. “It also sets in stone our commitment to the premium personal care sustainability market, and a green focused future for future generations,” he said. The acquisition of the Bondi Soap brand has also seen Pental make further investment in their production infrastructure, in order to accommodate local product manufacturing, teaming up with local engineering business, Maddison Wright Engineering to create two purpose-built custom blending vessels, due to be delivered to the site this week. “Both the new vessels have a 1500litre

capacity, they’re sanitary grade stainless steel with state-of-the-art inbuilt cleaning in process (CIP) functionality, further enabling us to produce small batches, bespoke, and specifically organic products,” added Mr Conte. “As a proud Australian company, it is really important, and very much a part of the Pental ethos that we use authentic formulations that are created right here in Shepparton.” “Bondi Soap represents a personal care range for the consumer that not only values quality ingredients but is conscious of their environment,” he said. The all-new BONDI SOAP range includes the following: • Bondi Soap Spray Hand Sanitiser Geranium, Rosemary & Cedarwood 300ml • Bondi Soap Body Wash Pomegranate & Bergamot 500ml • Bondi Soap Body Wash Rosemary Leaf & Orange 500ml • Bondi Soap Handwash Geranium & Peppermint 500ml • Bondi Soap Handwash Lime & Lemongrass 500ml • Bondi Soap Exfoliating Hand & Body Bar Lemongrass & Lime with Lemon Myrtle Leaf 200g • Bondi Soap Hand & Body Bar Geranium & Peppermint 200g • Bondi Soap Air Freshener Lemongrass & Pine 300ml

Fair Work Commission rules farm workers entitled to minimum wage By Steve Hutcheson AS we reported on earlier this year, at the height of COVID amidst the dramatic shortage of fruit pickers, the Australian Workers Union had moved to secure a

minimum wage for farm workers at the Fair Work Commission in place of piece rates frequently used in the industry. The Fair Work Commission has ruled farmworkers and fruit pickers who are paid

on piece-rate payments must be guaranteed a minimum wage under the Horticulture Award saying that the ‘existing pieceworker provisions’ in the Horticulture Award are ‘not fit for purpose.’ AWU national secretary, Daniel Walton, said “The ruling is one of the most significant industrial decisions of modern times.” The application by the AWU was supported by the state governments of Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia as well as the Australian Council of Social Service. The National Farmers Federation (NFF), Australian Industry Group and Australian Fresh Produce Alliance were among those opposed to the changes. Horticulturalists have argued that piecerates allow workers to earn more than the minimum wage, however, the AWU found that many people working in the industry received far less. There has also been reluctance by local workers to work under piece rates conditions creating a vacuum that has been over the years, filled by foreign workers. Local Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum said, “Piece rates have proven a useful means of providing an incentive to work in horticulture and industry will need to consider the implications of this draft determination. “Under the draft determination, piece rates can still be used to encourage productivity –

that is good news. However, the Fair Work Commission has proposed that a minimum hourly rate also apply.” Many growers have suggested that on piece rates, workers get more than the minimum wage. Other growers have suggested that many farmers will go broke if they are required to pay a minimum wage suggesting that, contrary to the grower's argument, most workers are not getting anywhere near the minimum wage. There is a dominating need that growers should aim to get a better deal from their buyers, the supermarket chains, and have a legislated fair pricing structure similar to what European farmers and workers benefit from. Local Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed, believes the decision will impact on some growers and not so much on others who take responsibility for their workers. It may also press growers to look at the contractor system where much abuse has been reported to arise and seek change at that level. “If they don’t clean up their own patch, it is inevitable that someone will come and clean it up for them.” This new Fair Work decision may also have a positive flow on effect where it’s likely to see more local workers return to take up positions in agriculture rather than relying so heavily on foreign workers as we now do.

Demand for help to resolve small business disputes OVER 19,000 enquiries were made to the Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) in 2020–21, overwhelmingly from small business tenants and their landlords feeling the ongoing strain of COVID-19 and restrictions to trade. There was an 85 percent hike in applications for help to resolve a dispute compared with the previous year, with a staggering 5,175 received. The vast majority were to resolve rent relief disputes under the Victorian Government’s Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme. This included situations where a tenant had stopped paying rent or where a landlord refused to come to the table with negotiations. Other disputes included retail leasing disagreements over who should foot the bill for outgoings or repairs and maintenance. Victorians also sought help to resolve general small business disputes including situations where supplier invoices were left unpaid or goods and services were not provided. Commissioner Lynda McAlary-Smith said the VSBC significantly ramped up efforts to address small business needs in response to exceptionally stressful circumstances. “There has never been a greater need for small business people to understand their rights and obligations and to know how to get support if they need it, be it guidance on rent relief in their language or help in looking after their mental wellbeing,” Commissioner McAlary-Smith said. The VSBC encourages small business owners who were feeling stressed or anxious to access free mental health and financial counselling.

With the steadily rising cost of electricity, many Victorian households have already gone over to solar and are now considering adding a battery to supplement their solar PV system. Adding a battery will enhance your solar bill savings by being able to store solar-generated electricity for use later in the day. Households may also be able to charge the battery with electricity purchased from the grid at off-peak rates for further savings on bills, although charging from solar would remain the priority. With enough batteries and solar panels, imports from the grid can become rare events. However, the battery’s high initial cost means that these bill savings might be cancelled out for many households. An exception is where your battery cost is subsidised which is what the Victorian Government is currently doing. Drawing from batteries in the early evening reduces your demand on the grid at peak times, which could help your electricity network provider delay expensive capacity upgrades (which consumers pay for indirectly). When more households install solar panels and batteries, there is greater potential to increase our use of renewable electricity in our electricity grid. In this way, at a societal level, increasing use of household batteries can actually assist in delivering more renewable energy and benefit our environment. To find out more about the battery rebate offered by the State Government, go to their website at https:// www.solar.vic.gov.au/solar-battery-rebate.

Recycle right

HARVEST TIME... Carmel Lucas with grandson Harly Carmody, picking some goods from her Rushworth property veggie garden. Photo: Kelly Lucas

GET THE MOST FROM RECYCLABLES... According to the National Waste Report 2020, Australia generated 3.5M tonnes of plastic waste in 2018 and 2019. Unfortunately, only 13% of this number was recycled, and 84% ended up in landfills. Photo: Supplied. NATIONAL Recycling Week kicked off on Monday, November 8. Here are six tips for recycling in the home: • Never put recyclables in plastic bags. Instead, use a tub or basket to carry items to the recycling bin. • Food scraps, cardboard, shredded paper and newspapers, and more can be composted and then used in your garden as fertiliser. • Never dispose of old clothes or shoes in recycling. Donate these items if they’re still wearable, otherwise, old clothes can

be repurposed into scrap for cleaning or crafts, or disposed of in the waste bin. • You don’t need to rinse recyclables, in fact, you’ll save on water if you don’t. Instead, empty any food or liquid before placing it in the recycling bin. • Plastic bags and soft plastics can be recycled through the REDcycle Program, facilitated through participating supermarkets. Get rid of them when you go to do your weekly grocery shopping. If it’s broken, fix it! Reducing what we buy and reusing what we own already are important factors in reducing waste.

Get your gardening gloves out LOOKING for something fun and easy to do around the home that will occupy the young and old and keep the family healthy and happy at the same time? How about starting a veggie garden. It doesn’t matter if you have a balcony or a backyard, anyone can start a veggie garden and reap the rewards of being immersed in nature. Veggies generally need around six hours per day of sunlight, good soil or formulated potting mix, and adequate drainage systems both in the soil and in pots. Vegetables that are ideal for spring planting include, tomatoes, carrots, capsicums, beetroots, cucumbers, and

broad beans. Crops ready for the taking include, silverbeet, spinach, spring onion, cauliflower, and broccoli, just to name a few. There are many great aspects of having your own veggie garden, watching the vegetables grow can be quite exciting. Then, when it's time to get out and pick what is ready, it is quite satisfying. Cooking and eating what you have produced yourself though, is by far the best part.

Blast from the past with bouclé MAN CAVE ENTHUSIASTS... Send us your man cave images to inspire others. Photo: Kelly Lucas A MAN cave is like a home within a home and while every man cave is different, based on personal preferences, there are definitely a few must have items to complete the space. A man-sized couch is a good start, followed by a fridge, TV and a pool table, maybe even a dart board too. With limitless ideas these days, people really can create their own oasis. The Adviser are calling out all “man cave

enthusiasts” to put their man cave to the test. Send through a photo of your man cave to The Adviser’s Facebook or Instagram accounts, or email your images and full name to editorial@sheppartonadviser. com.au A selection of the best images will be posted online for readers, in the hope they inspire others to create their very own dream man cave.

An acreage home that has it all

POPULAR in the 40s and 50s, bouclé is back with a vengeance. Most often most seen in white and cream, the fabric itself is fuzzy in appearance, almost like a worn jumper or cardigan that’s pilling. Bouclé is both a type of fabric and a type of yarn, each characterised by small loops of material that create a fleecy, textured look and feel. Traditionally, bouclé fabric was used in window treatments like curtains, but modern homes, with their preference for sheers and/or roller blinds, avoid this approach and instead adorn pieces

like curved armchairs and sofas in it, as well as headboards and ottomans too. You can also use it in a smaller way by adding bouclé rugs, cushions, throws and bedding. You’ll most often see bouclé sofas in white or cream, and a lot of the time the sofa shapes are quite fluid. They’re curved or feature puffy arms and a deep profile. As this furniture covering increases in popularity, options at both ends of the affordability scale should increase, meaning everyone can introduce this element into their existing décor scheme.

Four interior trends for 2021

INTERIOR IDEAS... Perfectly aged, worn-out wood flooring, brick walls, and metal bars exposed from the ceiling. A warehouse feel combined with homely touches can give a very modern and stylish edge to a new build. Photo: Supplied 1. POP OF COLOUR Decorating with neutral colours is a safe, timeless, and chic way to go. On top of that, it seems as though minimalistic and monochromatic design trends won't be going anywhere anytime soon. However, just because these tame interior styles are

in vogue doesn't mean you can't experiment with bright colours and fun hues. Sometimes you may want to add just a little something to your mainly white, beige, and grey space. 2. INDUSTRIAL Perfectly aged, worn-out wood flooring, brick walls, and metal bars exposed from the ceiling. A warehouse feel combined with homely touches can give a very modern and stylish edge to a new build. Focus on various textures, raw finishes, and the appeal of a design that centres on mechanical ingenuity. The ability to combine upcycled furniture, modern furniture and eclectic pieces you have collected means you have free reign with your decorating choices. 3. FARMHOUSE Modern farmhouse décor has really taken to the forefront recently and being situated in the Goulburn Valley means this particular style suits our lifestyle perfectly. Forget the farmhouse décor you may associate with Nan and Pop’s farm in the 90s, despite its charm. The new take on farmhouse chic means there isn’t a brown or terracotta floor tile in sight. 4. WARM-TONED METAL Warm metals like rose gold, copper and brass are going to be big news for fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen. Not only are they a nice break from silver and matte black, they have inherent antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities held by copper and brass.

Bee the envy of your neigh buzz with these plants

THE BEE’S KNEES... Colourful flowers and attractive scents will keep bees visiting your yard for years, which will keep your plants in great condition and the ecosystem thriving. Photo: Deanne Jeffers YOU may not notice them buzzing around you, but bees make a crucial part of your garden’s ecosystem. Without them, fruit and vegetable production would be compromised, and many flowering plants we love would cease to exist. Bees do the brunt of the work in pollinating, which is why planting flowers that attract bees is so important. More bees mean a happier garden and a healthier world. Bees are attracted to colourful, fragrant flowers. Bright colours and a wafting scent of perfumed petals grab their attention and tell them there is food nearby. The rich scent and bright yellow flowers

found on the native frangipani, currently in full bloom locally, produces creamy flowers with a strong fragrance that bees cannot resist. Callistemons, popularly known as the Bottlebrush, throw off flowers in pinks, reds and purple. They provide food and shelter for bees, as well as native birds, animals, insects and skinks – they will attract plenty of wildlife to your backyard. Daisies, eucalyptus trees, grevillea, pigface, and nasturtiums are alternative flowers that bees go crazy for. Any good nursery will be able to help you find the right plants for attracting bees that suit your garden and gardening needs.

2022 CALENDARS... Local artist Kody Bothwell has been working with WDEA Works on developing a 2022 Calendar featuring his art. Pre-sales are now open, so get in quickly. Photo: Kelly Lucas

LOCAL Shepparton artist Kody Bothwell has completed another amazing project that is both functional and a great way to showcase his renowned art projects from the past two years. Kody has been working with WDEA Works School Leaver Employment Supports (SLE S) Employment Preparation and Engagement Consultant Tracey Toy on developing a 2022 Calendar. Kody is a mixed media artist who likes to explore many different forms of art and loves to try new things and to broaden his artwork skills. He lives with Neurofibromatosis (NF1), which is a genetic condition that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. This has impacted Kody’s balance, speech, eyesight and caused many other difficulties in his daily life. As a result, Kody is legally blind from an optic nerve glioma. “There is a lot to NF1. Throughout my life

T H E Liberal Member for Nor thern Victoria, Wendy Lovell has welcomed the opening of the NSW and Victorian border, opening up both states ahead of the upcoming Christmas period. T he a n nou nc ement was m ade on Thursday, November 4, with current restrictions lifted at 11.59pm on Thursday night. Ms Lovell said the new rules means those travelling to Victoria, including returning Victorians, only require a permit from Service Victoria to verify they are not COVID-19 positive or required to isolate as a primary close contact. NSW and Victorian residents who reside within the border community bubble area do not require this permit, with the production of a driver’s licence sufficient to proof of their address. Despite this, Ms Lovell recommended those returning to Victoria by plane obtain the permit to avoid confusion by airport staff who may be unaware of the border bubble arrangements. “After much heartache, the border between NSW and Victoria is open, allowing us to travel freely without the need to get tested or to quarantine.”

“This is wonderful news for everyone and will ensure that families and friends are reunited to celebrate Christmas and enjoy the summer together.” There are no requirements for fully vaccinated Victorians entering NSW, unless they have been to a place of high concern within Victoria. However, a Victorian over

the age of 16 years and not fully vaccinated cannot enter NSW for recreation or a holiday. For further information go to www. coronavirus.vic.gov.au /travel-updates Information regarding border entry permits can be found at www.service.vic.gov.au/ services/border-permit/home

RSL Poppy Appeal celebrates centennial anniversary ON November 11, Remembrance Day, Commonwealth nations pause in respect for the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Now in their 100th year of supporting servicemen and women, the Poppy Appeal began in Australia in 1921, when the Returned and Service League of Australia, or RSL as it is known today, introduced the appeal to raise money for returned soldiers following the First World War. The red poppy has become an international symbol of sacrifice and of remembrance, to be worn with pride on Remembrance Day. Members of the public can support the RSL Poppy Appeal by buying a poppy or by donating. You may wish to make this donation in memory of a loved one who made the ultimate sacrifice during a time of conflict or who has passed away since. For Remembrance Day, a service at Shepparton’s cenotaph will go ahead at 10.30am. Access to the cenotaph will be fenced off with one entry and an exit. Visitors should enter via Welsford Street.

Traditionally schools would be invited for the wreath laying ceremony but unfortunately this year, at the time of planning, there was uncertainty of what restrictions would be in place so it was decided, due to the children’s safety, schools would not be included in this years' service. Spaces are limited at 500 and visitors must check in and be able to prove double vaccination status in order to enter the area.

Hair-raising impact AFTER what has been a challenging year, Movember is calling on Australians to come together for its 18th annual Mo-growing campaign and close out the year by having fun and doing good. Shepparton’s Tyler Brodie, who was born and raised in Benalla, has participated in Movember for the past six years. He became involved in the organisation and raising awareness of men’s mental health and suicide prevention after his best mate took his own life in 2013. Movember seeks to reduce the number of men who die prematurely, and by growing a mo and starting a conversation, the stigma around men’s health can be dismantled and real growth can take place. “It’s like my Christmas,” Tyler says, “Every year as soon as October 1 hits I’m thinking about Movember. I’m growing my mo out, I’m getting raffle tickets ready and talking to people.”

I want to help people and I want to raise awareness and funds, especially in this time of COVID-19 where mental health is more important than ever. Shepparton’s Tyler Brodie Initially Tyler raised funds by hosting a Bunning’s-inspired sausage sizzle, but COVID-19 restrictions have impacted f u nd raising effor ts as much as the phenomenon has impacted mental health and access to support. “I want to help people and I want to raise awareness and funds, especially in this time of COVID-19 where mental health is more important than ever.” Despite limitations, Tyler raised more than $1,500 last year and he hopes to make an even greater difference in the community and to Movember this year offering T-Bro's Movember merchandise and raffle tickets with prizes donated from local businesses. Time to take action

It is usual at this time of year that the greatest number of trapped fruit fly occur in urban areas where winter temperatures are higher than rural locations and the diversity of fruiting plants available to infest is higher. Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) populations are in the middle of the spring peak. These flies are overwintering adult fruit flies that have left their winter refuges in search of mates and fruit to infest. Management in urban areas early in the season will assist in reducing Qfly’s impact on commercial growers later in the season. Fruit fly build up from November onwards in urban areas and spread from urban areas to rural areas from March onwards, as commercial orchards start to ripen. Conditions this season are favourable for Qfly survival and population build-up.

Extra vigilance

Current hot spot locations include: • Kyabram • Orrvale • Mooroopna • Shepparton

Advice for home gardeners

• Remove unwanted fruiting plants • Harvest fruit and use, or destroy what you don’t want • Place traps out and check regularly for sign of Qfly population build-up • Check ripening fruit for sting marks or maggots • Netting whole plants, fruiting branches, fruit trusses or individual fruit is an effective way of protecting fruit • Placement of baits is recommended – the more people participating in a coordinated neighbourhood baiting program the better • Don’t restrict your vigilance to your backyard – Qfly can be in fruit in your front yard, nearby vacant land, untended crops, roadsides, creek banks, etc

Advice for peri-urban landowners

• Use traps and check fruit for stings and larvae now so that you know when Qfly is starting to build up • Removal of fruiting plants or their fruit will help in reducing the numbers of fruit fly breeding in your area • Baiting can be very effective in peri-urban locations if fruit fly numbers build up to damaging levels • Consider using netting for special crops Qfly move from urban sites through peri-urban areas and into commercial orchards during the late summer and autumn. Control of fruit fly in urban and peri-urban locations will assist commercial growers in controlling Qfly in their crops.

Goulburn Valley Water joins race to zero emissions continued from front page

GVW managing director, Dr Steve Capewell said that committing to Race to Zero is vital for the future growth and prosperity of the Goulburn Valley region. “Climate change is undoubtedly one of the most pressing issues we currently face, and it has far-reaching serious repercussions for the water industry, particularly in a warmer and drier climate,” he said. 2050 may be the end date but GVW aims for all electricity to be sourced from renewable sources by 2025, less than five years away. Already, solar investments made by GVW have generated more than 2,570 megawatt hours from 4,900 panels installed last year. “Solar energy is one of the key technology platforms. We’re very lucky at our Shepparton and Tatura wastewater treatment plants that measure biogas. "We can capture biogas and convert the gas into renewable energy as well.” The green energy produced by solar, and biogases can be used to power GVW’s sites or put back into the grid. and embracing new technologies that will revolutionise the race to net-zero, and developing partnerships with big industries locally, universities, and other organisations to bring the best of their talent to the table and to reach the 2050 goal are GVW’s strategy to lead the race. “It’s very exciting, very good for GVW and great for our region. Climate change is the biggest, most significant challenge the water

sector faces.” According to Dr Capewell, acute impacts of climate change include more frequent bushfires, summer storms, floods and droughts, all of which affect water. “We’re right in the crosshairs of the impacts of climate change, so it stands to reason that we’re at the forefront of trying to manage those impacts as well.”

On your marks, get set, Shepp Athletic Club is back LIMBER UP, because the Shepparton Athletics Club 2021/22 season will commence this Friday, November 12 at the Shepparton Athletics Track. The Shepparton Athletics Club got underway in 2019, before the pandemic, with the vision of being the home of athletics in the region. In their first season the club saw success at a regional, state and national level. Athletics Victoria can now welcome back athletes, and the club in Shepparton can get back to realising their goals on the track. Participants must be registered to be eligible to compete, with a range of membership options to suit your athletic needs. The club is fully inclusive and welcomes anyone from ages 12-100 plus, as well as people with any type of disabilities. It is essential that any athletes visiting from

a different club are members of Athletics Victoria or hold a Victorian Masters membership and pay a $10 fee on the night to compete. All people entering the track must check into the area, however, vaccinated status will not be checked, and face masks do not have to be worn outside where social distancing is possible. It’s all happening at the Shepparton Sporting Precint at 120 Numurkah Road. Gates open at 5.30pm for 6pm warm up. The first event starts at approximately 6.20pm.
