Top judges select best regional wines BEST IN SHOW...The three judges charged with the delicate task of ranking 75 wines for the Dookie Wine Show included winemaker Amy Smith of Warrabilla Wines; chief winemaker at Pfeiffer Wines, Jen Pfeiffer; and assistant wine maker at Fowles Wine, Tegan Clydesdale, pictured with Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre owner, Paul Phillips. THE highly-anticipated judging for the Dookie Wine Show took place last week, with three judges tasting and assessing 75 standout entries. The three judges charged with the delicate task of ranking 75 wines included head judge Jen Pfeiffer, chief winemaker at Pfeiffer Wines; winemaker Amy Smith of Warrabilla Wines; and Tegan Clydesdale, assistant wine maker at Fowles Wine. Jen Pfeiffer has been judging wines for over 15 years. “The important part of wine shows is the continuous improvement it encourages for the local wine industry as a whole. It gives winemakers a chance to have their wines assessed independently by a panel of three judges with technical expertise, to critically assess the wines in a blind setting,” she said. “We are able to provide feedback to all exhibitors, it gives local winemakers a chance to present their wines and get an idea of what they’re doing wonderfully and what they can change. “There’s some real crackers amongst what we’re judging today, a really lovely arneis, a newly emerging variety. Our region has prime soils and a great climate for grape growing, and it shines through in these wines.”
Established with the aim of promoting local wines, the annual wine exhibition is held in conjunction with the Dookie A&P Society, Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre, The Adviser, the Greater Shepparton City Council, and Goulburn River Valley Tourism. Now in its 18th year, the Dookie Wine Show is open to wineries across Northern Victoria. 2021 Dookie Wine Show winners thus far are: Class 1. Shiraz: Magyar’s Hill 2018 Shiraz Class 2. Cabernet Sauvignon: Magyar’s Hill 2018 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Class 3. Other Red Varieties: John Gehrig 2017 R.G. Durif Class 4. Chardonnay: Star Dust and Muscle 2020 Chardonnay Class 5. Other White Varieties: Whistle and Hope 2019 Riesling Class 6. Sparkling Red and White: Stone Dwellers N. V. Pinot Noir Wine of the Show will be announced at the Dookie Wine Show Dinner by major sponsor, The Adviser’s managing director, Geoff Adams. The date and location of the dinner will be finalised shortly and announced in The Adviser and online.

IN 2018-2019, the Murray-Darling Basin had its lowest two-year rainfall on record, as well as limited recovery in its water storage levels since 2020. Longer, more intense droughts are expected as global average temperatures rise and water security is put under further strain. Despite positive weather events and rainfall earlier this year that allowed a number of drought affected areas to start recuperating, local water supplies are still recovering and remain below the levels they need to sustain rural communities. This puts at risk the livelihoods of rural enterprises and communities that were dependent on reliable access to water. Almost half of Australia’s farms are serviced by the Murray-Darling Basin’s Victorian waterways, including dairy farmer Fiona Rourke’s property near Shepparton. Last week, Fiona received a donation of a critical 22,500L tank of water to help assist in the recovery from drought thanks to the #FinishWaterWaste initiative. Finish, in partnership with Rural Aid and supported by Coles, will be delivering more water tanks to Australian farmers. These tanks, delivered over the next six months, will help to ensure that more precious rain is captured, and the families that receive them are better

positioned for the next dry spell. “On behalf of my farming community, I would like to thank Finish, Rural Aid and Coles for their support of this much needed initiative. I also encourage other rural Australians struggling through drought recovery to reach out to Rural Aid for support,” said Fiona. “There is a persistent uncertainty and pressure on water availability in our region, causing great strain on our livestock and ability to care for our families, so the delivery of this water tank makes a big difference in supporting farming communities into the future.”

EACH of the five local governments in the federal electorate of Nicholls will share almost $20M through phase 3 of the Local Road and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program. Funding will see more than $41M distributed in total across the local councils. Under phase three, the Campaspe Shire Council and Moira Shire Council will receive over $5M; City of Greater Shepparton will receive over $4M, and the Mitchell Shire and Strathbogie Shire Councils will receive over $2M. Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, said the money would be spent on improving each council’s local road networks and for the delivery of priority community infrastructure projects. “I am excited to announce that our local governments can now nominate priority projects for funding, in the process taking them off a wish list and turning them into reality,” Mr Drum said. “I will work closely with all five local

councils in Nicholls to ensure local projects get underway and support jobs and businesses as soon as possible.” Among the approved projects under phase one and two of the LRCI program include redeveloping Shepparton’s Vibert Reserve Pavilion and improving lighting on pedestrian paths around Victoria Park Lake precinct, upgrading outdoor aquatic facilities at Avenel and Nagambie, and more. Councils can nominate a range of local road projects for funding, such as traffic signs, street lighting, bridges, tunnels, rest areas, or even road and sidewalk improvements. Community infrastructure projects include upgrading park facilities, installing Wi-Fi networks or improving bike and walking paths. Clearing sales like no other have provided a quarter-million dollar boost to GSSC – so far. In a unique partnership with Kevin Hicks Real Estate, GSSC has held two clearing sales for surplus goods ranging from student lockers to sporting equipment, appliances to filing cabinets and just about anything else you can imagine. Chelsea McKay, clearing sales manager, said the sales produced a record number

of bidders and ensured redundant goods from the school’s McGuire, Mooroopna and Wanganui campuses were re-purposed. “They’ve given the GSSC School Council significant funds to finance new, high-tech equipment for students.” Chelsea, a former Wanganui student, said a third sale will be held in the new year to ensure all goods go to a good cause.
Much more than desks and chairs … large plant and equipment like drills and lathes used in technology studies, along with massive kilns used in art, have been moved into the new GSSC in preparation for the school’s opening next year.

Children’s safety not a priority URGENT ACTION NEEDED... Kialla West Primary School Council have embarked on a fight to have the safety at their school crossing improved to avoid a repeat of a serious collision in 2019, with the full support of The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell. Photo: Kelly Lucas BIG CIRCUS EXTRAVAGANZA... Grade 5 and 6 students from St Mel’s Primary School at their annual performance, this year delivered virtually. Photo: Kelly Lucas
The show must go on! THE saying goes that the show must go on, and the student body of St. Mel’s have come together to ensure this is the case. Every two to three years St. Mel’s put together a production extravaganza, performed over two nights in September. Like with many things, COVID put a spanner in the works, but the school community are coming together to perform their show during the day, have it filmed and then shared with families. ‘Under The Big Top’, written by John Duff, is the 2021 production. It follows the tale of a circus that is being sabotaged by a villain called ‘Big Boss Daddy’. The circus folk band together and manage to save the day, with the help of their superhero, Circus Boy! The show features an incredible 17 songs with students from all classes performing in the production.
The core cast consists of 17 grade five and six students, including two ringmasters, clowns, jugglers, tight-rope walkers, a trapeze artist, acrobat, a strongman as well as Big Boss Daddy, his offsider, Clem, Circus Boy and a star-struck audience member, Mallory. We spoke with ‘Big Boss Daddy’, Lucas O’Hora, who shared his thoughts on this great production. "It was very messy at the beginning, especially when we went into remote learning and had to practice over google meets. We thought it may not even go ahead, with so many ups and downs, but in the end we pulled it all together & performed a great show! It's an experience I'll never forget and definitely a highlight of my primary school years.”
DESPITE a horrific crash at a local crossing over three years ago, calls to make the area safer for students and families have been ignored. Kialla West Primary School Council embarked on a fight to have the safety at their school crossing improved to avoid a repeat of a 2019 collision which resulted in three children being hospitalised. The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell strongly supports the school community in their bid to see an upgrade to the Kialla West Primary School crossing, to make it safer for students, their families and motorists. Ms Lovell stated the school is frustrated and angry at the lack of State Government action, particularly considering recent information from Regional Roads Victoria that further consultation had to be conducted with Heritage Victoria regarding the impact of any works on the nearby Avenue of Honour trees. In her latest contribution directed to Ben Carroll, the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Ms Lovell said the matter of the heritage trees was an obvious one and consultation
between RRV and Heritage Victoria should have commenced much earlier. Ms Lovell said Kialla West Primary School Council saw this development as just another unfortunate delay “The school’s frustration and anger at the Government’s failure to address their concerns is understandable and I urge the Minister to immediately intervene to prevent any further delays on making the crossing safer for everyone.” Kialla West Primary School Council President Jamie Gilbert also expressed his disappointment at this setback. “While the school respects the Avenue of Honour trees and their significance to our fallen soldiers, we would hope that the safety of our school families is also given priority, given the risks of this crossing” Speaking during the adjournment debate in State Parliament recently, Wendy directed attention to this critical issue and she hopes, along with the Kialla West Primary School, that it is resolved as quickly as possible.

SUSTAINABLE AND STYLISH... Building commences next month at MB+M’s purpose-built facility designed by talented architect, Allister Sarris. Photo: Supplied
SHEPPARTON'S premier accounting and wealth creation firm are proud to announce the building of their new premises, thoughtfully designed by architect, Allister Sarris, will be commencing in December. "We're really looking forward to this next chapter in the MB+M journey. Office life has changed dramatically in the last 15 years and we now have the opportunity to build a fitfor-purpose facility that will meet the modern needs of a busy Accounting/Wealth Creation firm," said MB + M tax specialist and wealth creation director, Greg Luscombe. "Many of you will remember when we moved to our current premises at 23 Nixon Street, 13 years ago. At that time, it was state of the art. How quickly things change! Our world is now mostly electronic and we no longer need areas like the filing room that takes up a
substantial proportion of the ground floor." The new building plan is modern, the main concept being the depiction of the building as 'floating'. While the building will be accessible to all, it will also tick many sustainability boxes. "Keep your eyes peeled for our regular photo updates on our social pages as building starts next month. We are expecting to make the big move early in the new financial year - as befits an Accounting Firm," said Mr Luscombe. The team would love to hear from any clients who can recall their 17 Welsford Street premises and prior to that, 21 Welsford Street. If you remember any of these, or even earlier buildings they occupied, please send an email to mbmshepp@mbmgroup.com.au or give them a call on 5821 9177.

Bringing generations together for the better ROTARY Club of Shepparton South are to build a new playground at Tarcoola Village in Shepparton. Anyone who watched the ABC’s, Old People's Home for 4 Year Olds would be familiar with the tremendous difference intergenerational connections have for both the young and old. Past president, David Earle explained that the project was inspired by the understanding that 40 percent of people in aged care never have a visitor. There are more than 300 residents living at Tarcoola Villages, which means that more than 120 residents have no visits from family or friends. The key project builds upon the Rotary Club of South
Shepparton’s ‘I wish I’d asked’ initiative, connecting students with aged care residents. By building a family-friendly activity centre and playground in close proximity to retirement villages, the group hope to build a family environment and park for all generations to meet and enjoy. The Tarcoola Parkland Project will be a nature inspired intergenerational playground and barbecue area, built to encourage families and children to visit their elderly loved ones more often. The Rotary Club of South Shepparton has committed $10K plus $18K in volunteer labour. Shepparton Villages, Greater
Shepparton Council, Rotary Foundation, and Spiire have also provided funding toward the project. Mr Earle said, “The whole community is coming together to help with this project. Seating is a large expense, but Council has donated some weathered park benches that volunteer VCAL students at Notre Dame will help renovate. A lot of the work will be done by volunteers.” The facility will also encourage engagement with local kindergartens and schools so that children can regularly interact with residents and build a more connected and enriched community for all.

A STRATEGIC move made earlier this year has seen local manufacturer, Pental, acquire Australian-made premium, personal care brand Bondi Soap, with a view to diversify their product offering. Relaunched in September after an extensive redevelopment of the range, the brand has seen a full external makeover including all new branding and packaging. Each individual product has also been reformulated with the intention to ensure that 100 percent of the ingredients used are sustainably sourced, natural (plant-based), planet-friendly and cruelty-free. The move comes as a part of Pental’s business strategy to diversify their brand offering, enabling the business to appeal to a broad range of market segments, explained site manager Carmine Conte. “It also sets in stone our commitment to the premium personal care sustainability market, and a green focused future for future generations,” he said.

The acquisition of the Bondi Soap business has also seen Pental make further investment in their production infrastructure, in order to accommodate local product manufacturing, teaming up with local engineering business, Maddison Wright Engineering to create two purpose-built custom blending vessels, due to be delivered to the site this week. “Both the new vessels have a 1,500L capacity, they’re sanitary grade stainless steel with state-of-the-art inbuilt cleaning in process (CIP) functionality, further enabling us to produce small batches, bespoke, and specifically organic products,” added Mr Conte. “As a proud Australian company, it is important, and very much a part of the Pental ethos that we use authentic formulations that are created right here in Shepparton. Bondi Soap represents a personal care range for the consumer that not only values quality ingredients but is conscious of their environment,” he said.

He became involved to raise awareness of men’s mental health and suicide prevention after his best mate took his own life in 2013. Each year Tyler has raised a larger number of funds and connected with a larger number of people to help stop the stigma around men’s mental health. “Massive thank you again to everyone who bought a ticket or donated money,
thank you again to the people who bought a hat, and thank you to Woolies Benalla for letting me sit out the front to sell my raffle tickets all day again," Tyler said. “Movember is over, but it is so important that we continue to talk about men’s mental health and to remove the stigma that see’s too many men die too young.” While the impact of the pandemic has poorly affected the mental health of many men and other Australians, while also hindering fundraising efforts, Tyler’s contribution is yet another example of how the community rallies together for the greatest impact possible.

EMOTION THROUGH MOVEMENT... Mark Niglia says he is driven by the desire to communicate emotion, using movement in his sculptures that allows others to interpret feeling through sculpture. Photo: Supplied.
Local artist wins people’s choice award continued from front page
MARK said, “I like to make things with a story in mind first. I need the inspiration and it gives me the energy to make something.” “I never met my great-grandfather, but I knew well of how my grandmother spoke of him and how she felt about him.” Mark creates sculptures from new and used materials, incorporating the energy of distorted metals, charred wood, and fragmented concrete to create emotional, imposing lifesize structures. ‘Yorke’ combines dignity and poise with the strength and
power that a horse possesses. He is sculpted from distorted metals in what the artist describes as a tumultuous yet organised way. ‘Yorke’ is one of a series of horse sculptures that Mark has created. “I just love horses, I can get a lot of variation from horses, they have so many emotions and unique personalities.” Mark Niglia has sculptures on display in NSW at The Roadside Gallery, Wollombi, and Winmark Art Gallery in the Hunter Valley, and his work ‘Pheonix’ is a permanent public display in Yinnar, Gippsland. Mr Merlino said, “It’s important that in our schools we celebrate our indigenous heritage in artwork, in landscape, in building and design, but also that we back it up in terms of support on the ground in the classroom.” GSSC students will benefit from unrivalled amenities, with an Enterprise and Innovation Centre that will deliver specialist technology, performing arts and the sciences, as well as world-class sporting facilities, including a weights room, two-court gym and a full-sized oval. “Whatever a student’s passion, it's going to be met in this school and for the wonderful teachers and education support staff here at Greater Shepparton, there are no better spaces to teach than at this school, and I'm just so excited. I can't wait to be back here for the official opening and seeing 2,200 students walk around and enjoying it.” “It's always been the intent from the very beginning to make sure that it's a big school in terms of opportunity. So, the full suite of VCE vocational opportunities, whatever students' passion is, can be delivered by this school.” Suzanna Sheed commented, “We had tired old schools. We’ve now got a state-of-the-art setting for our young people to be educated in and the opportunities of having all the resources in one place will truly be outstanding.” “The access to subjects, to services, to all sorts of things.... We’ve got our own wellbeing building, a gym, all these things in one place will just create opportunity that this community has never known for its young people.” “It’s investing in the most important thing that you possibly could in our community, and that is our young people.” DON’T MISS THE SPECIAL GREATER SHEPPARTON SECONDARY COLLEGE COMMEMORATIVE LIFT OUT IN NEXT WEEK’S EDITION OF THE ADVISER.

WITH the Christmas break just around the corner, it is a great time to start planning your trip away. But before you get too excited, it is important to ensure that your vehicle is in tip-top shape. To avoid holiday breakdowns, it’s best to get your car in for a service before the holiday season commences. This is critically important right now, because it’s likely your vehicle hasn’t spent as much time on the road in the last two years. Shepparton’s Central Tyre Service has nearly 70 years of service experience operating from the same location, and the team can assist with all your vehicle’s needs. Central Tyre Service co-owner, Timothy Webb said, “Preventative maintenance is
the key to vehicle reliability, ensure your vehicle is regularly serviced and maintained prior to any travel.” “Before you head off, it would be a good idea to plan ahead and get yourself prepared.” “Even though we specialise in tyres, we also offer full mechanical repairs including suspension, alignments, brakes and more, so drop in to see the team and let us help make sure your holiday break is a smooth, stress-free and enjoyable time.” Book your car in early for a service and tyre check. Description After visiting Harmony Village I discovered that it was once a privately owned facility functioning independently until Doutta Galla acquired the facility in 1997. DGAS continued to use its previous logo (pictured below) as future plans are in place to re-brand Harmony to follow the Doutta Galla brand in a more consistent nature. With these plans in place I took the liberty to keep the original Harmony flower leaving an appreciation of its origin, yet adding to the new look and feel of the rest of the DGAS facility Identities.

Chamber concern with traders and employees’ use of customer carparks FRUSTRATIONS and concerns have been raised by a number of business owners and store managers about the use of valuable on and off-street car parks normally reserved for shoppers being utilised by traders and employees. Complaints have been received from concerned traders in the Shepparton CBD about business owners and employees utilising on and off-street car parks. The Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in conjunction with Greater Shepparton City Council have been working hard to help bring life back into the city by improving parking in the CBD, however overstaying in customer car parks has a negative effect and is likely to attract a fine. Speaking in suppor t of improved parking for shoppers, Chamber President John Anderson said it was disappointing to hear that some business owners and staff had been taking up valuable car spots that should be prioritised for customers. “COVID has had a significant impact on business in Greater Shepparton, but it is important that we abide by the parking rules, particularly as the all-important
Christmas trading period commences,” John said. The question was asked, “do we have to get to the point where people will need to be reported to Council officers to stop this behaviour?” John Anderson said. “Car parks equate to shoppers and therefore business viability,” John said. Council launched complimentary car parking in all on-street car parks from 1st November, adding to the already existing free off-street car parking in Council owned car parks. Time limits still apply and infringements will be issued for vehicles found exceeding the time limits. This is a very positive joint initiative to encourage more shopping in the municipality, it’s a great outcome, but it is not for business-owners and their employees to park out the front of their own shops, these spaces are for their customers. The complimentary timed parking initiative for on-street car parking is being held over four months ending on 28th February, 2022 and is available at: • Maude/Nixon & Edward Streets Carpark 68 spaces including 2 disabled. 3 hours free (timed).
• Fryers/Edward Streets Carpark 39 spaces including 1 disabled. 2 Hours free (timed). • Fryers Street Carpark 34 spaces. 2 Hours free (timed). • Stewart Street Carpark 25 spaces including 2 disabled. 3 Hours free (timed). • High Street Carpark 124 spaces including 5 disabled. 3 Hours free (timed). • Welsford Street/Wyndham Mall Carpark 26 spaces including 5 disabled 2 Hours free (timed). • Opposite part Council part privately owned Welsford Street Carpark 85 spaces including 4 disabled. 2 Hours free (timed). • Fraser Street/West Walk Carpark 27 spaces including 2 disabled. 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) stations. 2 Hours free (timed). • Goyen Reserve 26 new spaces provided.

Fishers welcome Murray cod season today COD season opens today after a three-month closure in most waterways to enhance breeding. Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO, Travis Dowling said “Cod opening is keenly anticipated by thousands of fishers every year because they’re an iconic native species caught in beautiful lakes and rivers, often with family and friends.” “Victoria now boasts several of Australia’s premier Murray cod fisheries thanks to sensible catch limits,
record stockings and substantial improvements to fish habitat and river health.” Lake Eildon is one of the best spots for Murray cod, having been stocked with almost 3M fingerlings over the last 30 years, primarily funded by recreational fishing license fees. “Freshwater fishers are now regularly catching trophy metre-long cod with a lucky few encountering giants up to 120cm, considered the fish of a lifetime.” In more good news for Murray cod fishers, Lake Eildon
will welcome a two-year research project this summer to unlock some of the mysteries about cod movement into the Goulburn River above the lake. The study will determine whether cod in the upper Goulburn River are an active part of the population at Lake Eildon, or a distinct school of their own, and improve understanding of how to manage fisheries and waterways. Tips for throwing the perfect THE consistent weather and regular sunshine across the region make the Goulburn Valley perfect for entertaining outdoors. Above-average rainfall recently has local gardens looking beautiful. Here is how you can make the most of your gardenscape. Your guests’ comfort should be your number one priority. If you're entertaining through the day, ensure there are shaded areas and to provide sunscreen and water. For evening events, mozzie spray and citronella candles are essential. Throwing a backyard party is a fabulous time to free your inner child and play some yard games. Lawn games like bocce or croquet are classics, but do not overlook
fun activities like hulahooping, blowing bubbles, o r playing hopscotch. Be inspired by the seasons and provide a seasonal menu. Summer craft beers or a bubbly gin and tonic are great alcoholic options. Choose summery lemonades with fresh lavender or mint for a non-alcoholic alternative. Your local farmer’s market will stock in-season produce that is fresh and grown locally. Ask your vendor what is good and how they like to prepare ingredients for more inspiration. Lastly, have a backup plan in case of rain, wind or in case it turns out to be a scorcher.

A brilliant asset to Family Care Shepparton
AS many employers know, it is difficult to find great staff. Stephanie Hosking Human Resource (HR) Manager at Family Care Shepparton feels very lucky to have met and found a wonderful staff member in Shepparton woman, Caitlin Black. “From an unexpected introduction, Caitlin has proved to be an asset we didn’t know we needed. Caitlin has quickly established herself to be an integral part of our HR Team,” said Stephanie. Caitlin was introduced to Stephanie through her WDEA Works Employment Consultant Tiffany Amery. Caitlin had engaged WDEA Works, a Disability Employment Services (DES) provider in April 2020 to support her in finding a job. “When I met Caitlin, I was immediately impressed by how ready, motivated and organised she was to find a job. She came to us with a list of employers she would like to work for and roles she was experienced and ready to undertake,” said Tiffany. Caitlin who had experience in administration was interested in finding a role within a medical, dental, or allied health business. Tiffany spoke with Stephanie at Family Care Shepparton who agreed to interview Caitlin. Stephanie was immediately impressed and keen to provide an employment opportunity. An assessment was made of the Family Care Shepparton office and found some adaptions were required to make it possible for Caitlin (who uses a wheelchair) to work in the space easily and safely. Tiffany at WDEA Works was able to support Stephanie and navigate JobAccess to help Family Care Shepparton make their offices more
accessible. JobAccess provided financial support so Family Care Shepparton could have electronic doors installed, purchase a suitable desk for Caitlin and other equipment for her role. “I am so happy for both Caitlin and Stephanie that they were happy to wait and make the office modifications necessary for an accessible workplace with the support of JobAccess. Many employers don’t realise this financial support exists for them so they can confidently hire someone with a disability” said Tiffany. Caitlin had now been in the role of Administration Officer for over 5 months and is thriving. She supports the HR team with administrative functions, data entry and creation of files – no job is too big or small. Initially starting with one day’s work a week, this has quickly progressed to two and sometimes three with Caitlin confidently able to assist any department within the organisation that need administrative support. “Caitlin has shown she is not limited by her disability and provides excellent work outcomes in her new role,” said Stephanie. Caitlin is enjoying the benefits of employment and enjoys being part of the team. “I feel more confident and enjoy having responsibilities. It’s nice to have the stability that comes with an income plus I’ve made new friends and am enjoying the social side of employment,” said Caitlin. Tiffany is thrilled she was able to support Caitlin in finding employment in such a positive workplace. “She is a lovely young lady, she was so patient and driven to find the right role. I’m so pleased for both Caitlin and Stephanie that I was able to bring them together. This is what I love about my job” she said.

The possibility in community inclusion
EACH year as we celebrate International Day of People with Disability, we are amazed by the enthusiasm and determination of people with disability to continue to explore the possibilities of community inclusion. International Day of People with Disability provides us all an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of the local community in the provision of opportunities for people with disabilities to be included in community life. The 2021 IDPWD theme is ‘Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-
COVID-19 world’. This COVID year has presented many challenges for people with disability, and IDPWD gives opportunity for them to share their experiences, build community awareness, create meaningful recognition of their contributions and achievements and make positive change towards breaking down the barriers, even during a global pandemic. This Friday, December 3rd, we are reminded to continue to strive for inclusiveness and the removal of all barriers for people living with disability.
Looking for work? We are here to help. If you live with disability, injury, health condition or disadvantage, we can help you find a job that makes the most of your skills. Maybe you’re a fast learner or you’re good with people. Perhaps you have a strong can-do attitude or a determined mindset. You may even have a strength you don’t know about yet. Whatever it is, we can get you job-ready and find you a job to excel in.

Back on the BMX after major riding accident
LIVING LIFE... BMX rider, Sam Reid is back on his bike after a major accident last year. Photos: Kelly Lucas
By Kelly Lucas LAST year in the first Covid-19 lockdown when all parks were closed off to kids and families, 18-year-old Sam Reid and his mates decided to make some of their own fun by building a BMX track behind Harvey Norman on the Goulburn Valley Hwy, Kialla. For around four months many kids of all ages regularly met at what became quite a popular hangout for BMX riders keen for some fun and some big dirt jumps. But on
the 30th of August that all changed after BMX rider ‘Sam Reid’ came off a jump too short that ultimately landed him in hospital with a broken spinal column and a crushed vertebrae. The accident sealed the fate of the new BMX hangout as it was destroyed to prevent further injuries. Sam was lucky that he did not break his back, walking again was a blessing but his recovery did take some time. The first six weeks were spent in a back brace with visits in and out of hospital while undergoing three

months of intense physiotherapy sessions while off work as a mechanical engineer at Shepparton Motor Body. “I was really lucky, the recovery was challenging but it was my brother who inspired me to get back on the bike! He was getting better than me, and I couldn’t let that happen,” said Sam. With all parks currently back open to the public, kids and families can finally get back out in the fresh air and enjoy doing what they love.
For Sam, getting back on the bike was something he knew he just had to do and most days now although he still suffers from some pain, he can be found doing tricks at the local skate park beside the Shepparton lake. “Get outside and get dirty, there is no point being stuck inside on video games when you can have fun and get exercise at the same time, but don’t forget to wear your safety gear, it may just save your life,” said Sam.
