FOLLOW I NG a population boom in Shepparton North, Greater Shepparton City Council is now preparing a Structure Plan to guide the future development of the area. This is long overdue according to Pat & Tina’s BP Service Station owner, Joe Di Conza. “This end of Shepparton has been neglected. More and more houses are going up each week, but where is the infrastructure to support this?” said Joe. “So much has been spent on continuous redevelopment of the CBD, but what’s really needed is the construction of services out here, maintenance of Council land and a clear plan about how we will support the population increase.” The Shepparton North Activity Centre (SNAC) was identified in the ‘Commercial Activity Centres Strategy, November 2015’ (CACS) as a sub-regional activity centre, the same status as Riverside Plaza and the Mooroopna CBD in the retail hierarchy of the Greater Shepparton Planning Scheme. The SNAC comprises land between Ford

Road and Hawkins Street on the eastern side of the Goulburn Valley Highway (Numurkah Road). It services a large catchment in Shepparton North as well as a broader area stretching as far north as southern New South Wales. The Planning Scheme considered that further expansion and concentration of retail and commercial facilities may be required in the future to serve the growing population of Shepparton North. With this in mind, a Structure Plan is required to help guide the Shepparton North Activity Centre (SNAC). The Structure Plan will guide the future development of the SNAC for predominantly retail and commercial purposes, while ensuring that it provides appropriate connections to surrounding commercial, recreational and residential areas in the area. It considers the implications and opportunities for Shepparton North in terms of development (e.g. industrial, commercial and residential uses), movement and access and the analysis of projections for economic growth.

Treaty Day Out a success BIG names including Yothu Yindi, Archie Roach, Briggs, Electric Fields and more rocked Shepparton for Treaty election on Saturday. Held at Rumbalara Football Netball Club, with thanks to the many volunteers who helped ma ke Treat y Day Out a success, it was a day written into the history books of Yorta Yorta Woka according to the club. The outstanding musical line-up of First Nations talent performed in a bid to raise awareness and support for the journey towards Treaty in Victoria. The community event was held by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria to coincide with a by-election in which Aboriginal people in the state’s north-east

will choose who will represent them in the Treaty process. Head of Engagement, First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, Amy Rust reflected on how the day went. “It was a huge success. Aboriginal people came out to enrol to have their voices heard on the journey to Treaty, our allies came out to show support and we all got to enjoy a hell of a show together,” said Amy. “Treaty Day Out gave a boost to the local economy and supported musicians and crew who have had a hard stretch during Covid. But ultimately, this event was about bringing us all together to share and celebrate our culture. Much like Treaty itself.”

New jobs, health benefits and tourism opportunities are some of the benefits that underpin the project, which the Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, said would flow on both during and beyond the construction period. “The Rushworth-Murchison Trail will provide a free, safe, and accessible space for locals and support local investments such as carparks, public toilets, and playgrounds.” “New jobs will be created during construction and once completed, the hospitality industry and other local businesses can expect to benefit from the growing trend of rail trail holidays,” Mr Drum said. The Rushworth-Murchison Trail is the latest of its kind in Nicholls to receive funding, following the Yarrawonga Tourism

Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Chrissy Weller, said Council was delighted to have received the funding and that the project had been a key priority for several years. “It will attract an abundance of users who will, in turn, economically boost local eateries, accommodation and retail,” Ms Weller said. “We thank Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, for his ongoing advocacy.”

Regional multiculturalism is alive and well in Shepparton REGIONAL multiculturalism is alive and well in Shepparton. South Asian Community Link Group – Australasia Inc. is proof of this. The group met at the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre on Saturday, connecting with an ever increasing population in regional areas. Multiculturism has enabled the communities to develop strong networking and importantly making a contribution to the economic prosperity of the region. For further information, contact Meena Malla on 0452 262483 or Dr. Raju Adhikari 0412 853603.

Brick by brick ONE by one the old Shepparton Hotel goes down. Some speculation over the responsibility of the demolition and the bill have arisen recently, as the building is quietly pulled back down to earth. Business owner, David Parente from Selective Demolitions, said that the works have been commissioned and will be paid for by the owners of the property. David was contacted last year concerning

the need to demolish what was left of the dilapidated hotel. Last July, Council declared the Hotel a risk to life and property following reports that bricks were being removed from the internal walls. Since the building’s structural integrity was assessed, no effort was made to stabilise the façade on the roadside. Throughout the demolition, WorkSafe and the Greater Shepparton City Council

have been onsite to determine that the works are being done safely and time efficiently. “It’s got to be one of the worst jobs we’ve ever done,” David said. “But I’ve always liked a bit of a challenge.” Selective Demolitions have over 20 years' experience. They were the company tasked with moving the grandstand at Shepparton Showgrounds some years ago. “When I got the call about the job, I

went out to the Hotel and had a look – I never take on a job the first day I see it. I slept on it, I came back, and I slept on it some more. A lot of people overthink these things, but we always find a way.” “If the building were further from the road, it would take days to clear. But because the boundary is right on the roadside, we will pluck the bricks to the top of the first floor and then excavate the site.”

Climate Change and what it means for Greater Shepparton GREATER Shepparton is already experiencing the impacts of climate change - higher maximum and minimum temperatures, less reliable rainfall, more extreme weather (storms, tornadoes), and greater risk of flooding from the Broken and Goulburn Rivers, all of which will affect our livelihoods and lifestyles. Climate Change is impacting on the geographic, social and economic prosperity of our community. Health and Wellbeing impacts • Extreme heat and heatwaves -increased heat exposure/ heatstroke • Floods and Storms - personal safety and thunderstorm asthma • Bushfires - smoke inhalation and risk to life • Extreme weather events and drought - stress induced mental health and domestic violence Economy and Workforce impacts • Lower rainfall/climatic extremes and pests and diseases - disruptions to outdoor workers, projects, supply chains, tourism, major events, reduced agricultural productivity • Heat/Storms/Flooding - increased insurance claims and repairs and maintenance costs • Frost patterns are changing - we can no longer rely on seasonal patterns of the past • Farmers’ income directly impacted by changes to climate, including extreme weather damage to crops, or animal deaths Social impacts • Approximately 25% of Greater Shepparton’s population could be considered more vulnerable to climate change impacts due to their age

Neighbourhoods and Built Environment impacts • Extreme heat and weather events - increased energy and maintenance costs to maintain buildings at comfortable temperature (heating and cooling), and disruption to outdoor lifestyle, recreation and sports programs Environment and Emergency impacts • Extreme heat and weather events - continuing decline of biodiversity leading to further extinction and increase in pest plants and animals • Emergency Events and Bushfires - increased reliance on emergency services limiting their capacity to respond; costs and resources

Page 4 – The Adviser Australia No.1:1600 Wednesday, March 2, 2022

Increased temperatures, drought - Continued river health decline • Rivers and wetlands make Shepparton more susceptible to flooding from extreme rain events These impacts will continue to increase over time but the extent depends on what we do right now to achieve a Climate Safe Future for Greater Shepparton. Autumn water pulse set for the Goulburn By Kelly Lucas THROUGHOUT January, The Adviser had been receiving calls about low levels of water, poor water flow and black water being spotted along the Goulburn River between Murchison and Mooroopna. So, The Adviser made the call to Goulburn-Murray Water to see if we could find out any more information and when some water may be released. “The flows being released downstream of Goulburn Weir are meeting a standing order for environmental flows from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GBCMA). As well as meeting environmental targets, the flows are scaled to supply irrigation, domestic and stock use, and Shepparton’s water supplies,” said Goulburn Murray Water River Operations coordinator, Bob Knowles. “The flow regime of between 700 and 1000ML/d will remain until we need to deliver Inter- Valley Trade (IVT) flows at

Council seeking community feedback on waste and glass collection GREATER Shepparton City Council is seeking community feedback on kerbside waste and glass collection. It is important to have your say when it could potentially change the frequency of when the current bins are collected. As part of the State Government’s Rec ycl i ng Vic tor ia pol ic y, C ou nci l is seeking to incorporate an alternative measure to remove glass from the current recycling bin and make changes to the frequency of kerbside bin collections to reduce waste going into landfill. “Changes to glass recycling are being introduced across the state and we want to know people’s thoughts on these changes. Currently, it is difficult to separate glass

from other recyclable materials, and glass items often break in mixed recycling bins. Making changes will help improve recycling and the amount of waste going to landfill,” said Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe. Seeking empathetic workplaces By Kelly Lucas KAZI Connect is a new initiative at St Paul's African House that will work to address the many barriers faced by African-Australians in gaining employment, forming strong relationships with local employers, and creating customised strategies for people to find and maintain suitable employment. NEWS

LIBERAL MEMBER FOR NORTHERN VICTORIA REGION

Parliament Wrap Up

In State Parliament last week, I raised several issues important to the people of the Shepparton electorate. GREATER SHEPPARTON SCHOOL BUSES

My office has been inundated with complaints by parents of children from Greater Shepparton Secondary College who have been left behind because of overcrowding on school buses. There have been many reports of more than 70 students travelling on a bus licenced to carry 54 passengers. This is extremely dangerous for students and makes practicing social distancing impossible. Clearly there are insufficient buses to safely transport our children to and from school and I called on State Government to increase the services of the School Bus Program. I have also written to Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll to reiterate the need for action, as well as to Premier Daniel Andrews and Education Minister James Merlino to make them aware of the situation.

CURRAWA FIRE BRIGADE STATION

The Currawa Fire Brigade has needed a replacement fire station for many years, yet no funding has been provided by the Government to build a fit-for-purpose fire station for the volunteers and the local community.

Geelong Car Revival this weekend

THE Geelong Revival Motoring Festival is an actionpacked motoring festival held on Geelong’s picturesque waterfront. Take pole position for the historic quartermile sprints, as 300 classic and exotic cars and motorcycles sprint down Ritchie Boulevard at full throttle. The event is being held this Friday March 4 until Sunday March 6. The Geelong Waterfront will be covered with over 800 quirky, valuable and fascinating vehicles that are guaranteed to please anyone with an appreciation for unique vehicles. Take a step back in time into their vintage lifestyle zone featuring live music, trade stalls, delicious food and entertainment. The lifestyle zone wouldn’t be complete without the Vintage Caravan Display and of course the National Vintage Fashion Awards, a crowd favourite. Motoring enthusiasts can top off their weekend in

our trade expo zone, featuring great displays, sales and unique demonstrations. The Geelong Revival Motoring Festival is the ideal way to spend a day out with the whole family and this year’s event is going to be a memorable one! Entry is free to all areas except the Pits and VIP zone.

Please note listings are to be fewer than 55 words. FASHION PARADE - by Kay's Fashions (Melb) Friday, March 18th at 1pm at Shepparton Villages Tarcoola. Activities Centre, followed by Devonshire tea. Cost is $8 which includes the Fashion Parade,

Devonshire tea, and a lucky door prize. Bookings 0438567957 or 58215708. Must be double vaccinated and show proof. Maximum 55 persons.

The Currawa station is too small to house new tankers coming online and has no changeroom facilities to cater for the increase in female volunteer membership. There is no storage for breathing apparatus equipment and no room for volunteers to conduct meetings.

UNUSED PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL SITES The closing of the four public secondary schools in Shepparton and Mooroopna to create the Greater Shepparton Secondary College has left three school campuses empty and neglected. They are slowly becoming an eyesore in the community, and I asked Education Minister James Merlino to ensure regular maintenance is carried out at the former McGuire College, Wanganui Park Secondary College and Mooroopna Secondary College sites and for him to also inform the community of the Government’s future intentions for each of the sites.

Have your say on the future of waste in Greater Shepparton. Provide feedback online or attend an information session: 1 March – Tatura Library 5.00-5.30pm 2 March – Mooroopna Library 5.00-5.30pm 8 March – Shepparton Library 5.00-6.00pm 9 March – Shepparton Library 5.00-6.00pm

I asked Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes for a commitment to allocate urgent funding to build a new fire station at Currawa, as well as a new station for the Yarrawonga brigade.

I N T R O D U C I N G I N S P I R AT I O N A L W O M E N O F T H E G O U L B U R N VA L L E Y TODAY, women make up more than half the paid workforce in Australia, alongside raising families, helping their communities, and caring for themselves and others. Women are no longer managing households alone but managing businesses and organisations as well. This looks quite different to Australia in 1966, where only around 30 percent of women held employment and many more were expected to remain home. For this International Women’s Day feature, we feature local inspirational women who live and work in the Goulburn Valley, and help make our region great. These are business owners and managers, doctors, veterinarians, retailers, women

who work in typically male-dominated industries like tools and trades. They are also mothers, daughters, sisters, sportspeople, volunteers, and much more. International Women’s Day is a day to recognise how far we’ve come towards gender equality while recognising the way we have left to go. In countries like Australia, we have rights our grandmothers could have only dreamed about, but we have not yet reached equality, and much of the world is far behind. Join us in celebrating local women and the contribution women make around the world, up against unique barriers like gender biases that still affect women and girls in work, education, and more areas of life.

TOOLS FOR EVERY PERSON... Total Tools Shepparton co-owner Haxhije (Hajea) Cox is thrilled to see more women joining trades and purchasing tools for themselves. Photo: Kelly Lucas

IF you were in the market for a drill or an air compressor sixty years ago, you most likely would not have been served by a woman. Total Tools Shepparton prides itself on equal opportunities and empowering all women within the community and tool industry. Haxhije (Hajea) Cox, co-owner and face of Total Tools Shepparton, works behind the scenes in administration for the local business along with supporting staff on the floor and empowering staff from the side lines. We are happy to see more women selling tools within our industry. “I am thrilled to see more women joining trades and purchasing tools for themselves – It’s great!” “Sadly, we still get customers that walk past the girls and say they don’t need help because they assume that they don’t have knowledge. But when asked if they need help from a male, they say yes,” said Haxhije. "We have women working with us who come from diverse backgrounds like farming, diesel mechanics or other trades that can assist in queries and help with your tool needs." The local businesswoman and mother of three says that she has always been supported in her career. As a business owner, Hajea is making sure other women have the tools to succeed as a female in a male dominant retail industry. Total Tools Shepparton is located at 46-52 Benalla Rd, (the old Empire building). Give them a call on 5821 6400.

Leading T H E W AY F O R W O M E N IN BUSINESS By Stephanie Holliday A name synonymous with strong women in business, Sandra Harris has proved with almost a-decade stronghold in the mining industry, that being female and hailing from a regional city is no barrier to remarkable success. As corporate services director of All West Engineering and Maddison Wright Engineering, Sandra and her business partner Paul Harris had a lightbulb moment in 2009 which quickly grew to become a Goulburn Valley success story of epic proportions. Paul Harris identified a gap in the mining industry and together they began a journey whereby they matched high skilled workers from the Goulburn Valley with positions in Western Australia’s mining regions, creating life-changing opportunities for their employees and impressing the mining industry with such a high calibre of tradespeople. Sandra and Paul later created a strategic partnership with Heath Wright and Conor Egan forming Maddison Wright Engineering and Proform Industrial setting up Engineering Workshops across Victoria. “We have grown from having just five employees to over 250, across four states. We may not have started with a distinct strategy, but we have flourished thanks to our drive, passion and vision shared by all partners,” said Sandra. “Our team is made up of people with different strengths

and niche skillsets, but we work collaboratively and so well together to encompass our organisation’s core values.” Sandra may be the only woman in a leadership team of mostly men, but that is a non-issue. “There’s been a big shift towards women in business and as leaders in recent years. I think the media has played a key role in this, women are being recognised for perhaps the different dynamic in leadership they bring to the table and it’s becoming apparent that equality across the board is in every organisation’s best interest,” Sandra said. Sandra now heads a group of 6 companies with business interests in the mining, engineering, and tech spaces. She works daily with a dynamic group of business partners.

“I have been fortunate enough in my business partnerships to work with an incredibly talented and inspiring group of entrepreneurs, that all support and value each other’s dynamics.” As the groups ventures continue to grow, Sandra has a key message for everyone in business, whether they are finding their growth to be stagnant or are just starting out. “My message to anyone scaling their business, small or large, is to be transparent with your team. Especially internally, as it builds trust and increases engagement. When you have an engaged and dynamic team, they are content and the results of that is efficiency and a desire to achieve greater outcomes.”

We provide specialist engineering solutions for manufacturing, dairy, food & beverage and chemical industries across Australia.

THE trade industry is the second largest in Australia, yet women make up one percent of building trades countrywide. This number is increasing, and more young women like Shana Brand, fourth-year painting apprentice with Shepparton’s Colour Your Castle, are choosing the paintbrush and measuring tape over scissors or shears. “I started my apprenticeship late because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. At school we had to do a TAFE course. I tried hair and beauty because it interested me, but I really liked painting and I thought a trade would give me better career options and more freedom.” Shana learnt painting from her dad before starting her apprenticeship with Colour Your Castle. “For a long time, girls were taught to pick what was easy or what they knew. You don’t know what you’re getting into when you pick a trade, but you have a lot to gain.” “I’m glad there are other women a part of the trade industry. I feel more connected seeing girls, especially girls my own age at TAFE or online, doing the same thing.” Colour Your Castle is locally owned and operated, and much of their work comes from repeat clients or referrals for a reason. THE opportunity to call the shots in business and offer employment opportunities to other women, at Shepparton’s only all-female pharmacy has been a game-changer for Reid’s Pharmacy co-owners Kate Boswell and Leticia Keady. They met at university before Leticia followed pharmacy to Broome and Kate to Melbourne. Both country girls, a year ago they bought Reid’s Pharmacy together from original owner, Steve Reid. Managing the pharmacy through Covid has been a whirlwind, but both Leticia and Kate are proud of their team, and they have kept the business alive by providing great service and good advice. Kate always loved chemistry at school. She remembers a TV ad that clicked for her. It said “’Pharmacy, it’s good people science.” Kate didn’t have to sit in a lab all day, she wanted to be able to interact with the people that her chemistry skills could help. “Going through uni, classes were like 70 percent female. There are way more females doing pharmacy, but somehow it ends up being more males in leadership positions,” Leticia reflected. Recently married, Leticia admits she sought advice from Steve before buying the business and starting a family.

“I said, ‘Maybe I should wait, maybe I should have kids first then look at this later,’ and he said to me, ‘Would you have kids then run a marathon?’” I realised that I could pursue my career and my personal goals as well. In addition to a female workforce, Kate and Leticia have taken on female pharmacy students as part of their vaccination service. “It’s been good to help people with employment

AT T H E F O R E F R O N T O F M A I N T E N A N C E A N D ENGINEERING SOF T WARE TECHNOLOGY By Stephanie Holliday WITH a wealth of hands-on experience in Australia’s mining industry, the team at SprintSuite are proud to present a new tech platform like no other. With almost a decade of experience in maintenance and engineering fostered a natural progression to the development of cutting-edge software that supports and adapts to an organisation’s individual needs, streamlines operations and proves that by having the right systems in place, the potential for growth is infinite. CEO & co-founder Sandra Harris and her business partners saw a gap in the market for software that works with an organisation, a system that is dynamic and functional, and that was unique to what was already used by those in the maintenance and engineering intensive industries. Field service, project and workshop management solutions are SprintSuite’s key offerings, enabling companies to identify, manage and quickly rectify bottlenecks with the ability to access live data, allowing complete visibility across their operations. “After years of experience working closely with mining giants like Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group, we saw how the right technology could help streamline operations for industries that rely heavily on their systems running efficiently,” said SprintSuite CEO & Co-founder, Sandra Harris.

“Our platform fundamentally changed the way those mining services companies we have worked closely with over the years operate. The SprintSuite system can now be engaged to transform businesses in other industries where instant visibility across the board is key. From digital timesheets, a staff scheduling booking system, complete procurement and billing system to a comprehensive health, safety and training module – these are just some of the many features SprintSuite has to offer. We have Reinvented the workflow software platform into a unique enterprise system focusing on the ability for complete line of sight on business with live data at any time.” SprintSuite seamlessly integrates with industry specific applications such as Xero, Locomote, Employment Hero, Rossum, and Verizon GPS asset management system providing coverage for all facets of your organisation’s software requirements. A genuine passion FOR PROPERTY

THEY say home is where the heart is, and that is precisely why when selling or buying a property, working with an agent that embodies genuineness, understanding and has a wealth of experience is key to getting the best outcome. Sharryn Dawes and Maryanne Cardillo are local female real estate agents that exude warmth and have strong roots within their communities, meaning they can tap into these relationships to deliver the best result when it comes to finding your dream home or saying goodbye to the previous chapter in your life. Having operated within the realm of real estate for almost a decade, effortlessly developing relationships and successfully navigating through a plethora of market landscapes, Sharryn’s now expansive insight coupled with her down-to-earth sensibility, proves her to be a trusted advisor, when it comes to both residential and rural property. Sharryn is driven by a love of helping people, and by proving those who doubted her wrong. “Real estate is the biggest financial decision anybody can make and being

able to help through the journey is so rewarding once settlement has taken place. Learning about each person and their story as to ‘why’ it’s time to make the next move is just fascinating,” said Sharryn. “I was told when I first entered real estate that I would never make it as a sales agent because I have children, it has been my goal to prove said person wrong and look where we are now! “I would say to women across the Goulburn Valley, don’t think twice, get out there and make your dream a reality.” With a lifetime’s experience tucked neatly up her professional sleeve, it’s not surprising Maryanne’s sophisticated knowledge and intricate understanding of sales, business and management, has meant she effortlessly wears many hats. Although, for Maryanne it’s her unwavering and distinct local knowledge, combined with her innate passion for property, that secures her fuss-free and successful selling strategy. “Work/life balance is a juggling act particularly when you have children. Having a support team around you- spouse, family,

KATIE Singleton-Foley is the clinic manager at Fur Life Shepparton. She began working with animals after having kids, by pursuing a vet nurse traineeship. Katie’s passion has seen her help animals in Australia and in Cambodia, where she lived for eight years. She had her son with her in Cambodia and Katie says she has been lucky to work in family friendly practices, which has enabled her to juggle motherhood with her aspirations. “I was extremely lucky that my son was old enough then that I could pick him up from school and have him in the staff room. Everybody had their children there watching TV and drinking Milo.” “If that wasn’t an option, it would have been extremely difficult for me to fulfil my role.” Fur Life Shepparton veterinarian, Dr Jessamy Alexander, has two children aged four and six years. Every day she travels a distance to get to Shepparton for work. Having a supportive partner and workplace and seeking additional support she needs allows her Dr Jessamy to manage her busy schedule. “Networking is just listening to people and finding out what they're doing and being interested. By asking questions and being interested a lot of opportunities can come up. You can find so much support through school, childcare, and in your neighbourhood. Start doing that earlier.” Fur Life Vet Clinic Shepparton is located at 190 Benalla Road. The friendly team can be contacted on 4804 6444. CARING FOR ANIMALS... OF MANCHESTER SERVICE AND SALES

WHEN The Adviser team began planning this special feature on inspirational women in the Goulburn Valley, it wasn’t long before we thought of the team at Finny’s Manchester, a success story of fine service for over 33 years. Finny’s Manchester is a Shepparton institution, and for good reason. The family owned and run business founded by Ray and Anne Finn has survived all the ups and downs of the recession ‘we had to have’ in the early 1990s, the Global Financial Crisis which began in 2007, and in more recent times, the extraordinary COVID -19 period. Remarkably, Finny’s Manchester continues to look after 100s of customers week in week out both in Shepparton and Bendigo. The key to their continued success, in addition to hard work, are two generations of Finns working at the business and a formidable team of girls who continue their unwavering service. Combining over 100 years’ of exemplary customer service are Anne Finn, with 33 years of service, Tina Sicali (Finn) with 33 years, Shirley, 25 with years' service, Tara, with 15 years' service, and Darielle, nine years' service. The team are proof that selling a broad range of quality manchester, alongside the provision of great customer experience, translates to the ability to weather through any storm.

FOUR GENERATIONS OF FINNY’S MANCHESTER…Strong family bonds are the backbone of Finny’s Manchester and a key to their great success. Pictured from back is Zoe Sicali, Tina Sicali and in front, Anne Finn and Aileen Hendy. Photo: Steve Hutcheson

Finny’s Manchester is ‘the little store, with big savings’ and the strong family bonds the team has deserves recognition and credit in an age where the retail sector has faced unprecedented challenges. Heading up the Shepparton business is Anne and her daughter Tina, with Ray overseeing the buying of stock, storage and logistics.

CHEERS TO WOMEN... Rochester Tavern is a female-run pub with a lot on offer for all. Photo: Supplied.

WITH THE MOSTESS

RUNNING a pub was thought of as ‘man’s work’, particularly a rural pub in a small town like Rochester. Olivia James bought and refurbished the historic 1870s-built Commercial Hotel, now known as the Rochester Tavern, in 2019. She bought the tavern because she wanted to be her own boss and to improve outcomes for herself and other women in hospitality. “Hospitality is a fantastic industry to be in. If you do it well, you can go so far and travel as much as you like,” said Olivia. Since starting out in hospitality at age 17, working at the famous Glenferrie Hotel, Olivia has seen and experienced some of the hardships women face in a male dominated industry.

By providing stellar service and looking after clientele, who look after her and the team, Olivia has created a welcoming environment to train and support her all-female staff on the floor and in the kitchen, led by an Italian head chef. Feast on wood-fired pizzas, locally sourced rib eye or scotch fillets, or exclusive Murray Cod, which Olivia handpicks from the Echuca Gold Murray Cod Farm. The kitchen is open Tuesday to Saturday for dinner as well as Friday and Saturday lunches. For bookings contact Olivia on 0481 774 986 or drop in at 49 Moore St, Rochester. Visit www. rochesterwinetavern.com.au to learn more.

A N D A W E A LT H O F K N O W L E D G E AS one of the longest-standing independent butchers in Shepparton, Krueger’s Fine Meats and Smallgoods have cemented themselves as the go-to for foodies with their premium products and specialty items with bold flavours. The team is led by owners Emma and Martin Krueger who have proudly operated the business for the last 11 years and are committed to continuing to deliver the pristine quality the local butcher is known for. They are a prime example of how teamwork and a drive to succeed can afford business owners the seemingly elusive work/life balance. “I would say I run the show,” laughs Emma. “In all seriousness though, Martin and I work together to raise our children and maintain the reputation our store upholds that we have worked so hard to achieve. We have a system in place, one week I’m mostly in the store then the next it’s Martin’s turn, so we both have the chance to spend quality time with the kids. Family is so important to us, and this is a routine that works for our business and lifestyle.” Krueger’s Fine Meats and Smallgoods are all about excellent quality over quantity, and Emma has a message for other women thinking of taking a leap and starting a business specialising in something they are passionate about. “It’s easy to be comfortable and keep putting off taking a leap because you

“WORKING in a male dominated industry – that's the challenge,” said GV Hotel bistro function manager, Kylie. "It can be a struggle to just be recognised as managers.” GV Hotel general manager, Marg has managed the hotel for 38 years and both women have spent most of their working lives in Shepparton’s hospitality scene. WOMEN IN BUSINESS... GV Hotel general manager Marg and bistro function manager Kylie have seen opportunities for women in hospitality multiply. Photo: Kelly Lucas

They have seen it all. The freedom to travel and build a world-class career has forever changed hospitality. Marg and Kylie encourage more women to explore the industry and they provide many local young people with a start. “Because that’s the thing about hospitality, there’s such a full range of jobs and you can travel with it. If you can work behind a bar and you can carry a conversation, you’ll get a job anywhere,” said Marg, who’s own mother encouraged her into the industry because all people need food.

Not only is room to travel abundant, but the playing field is more level than ever, with women managing events and venues, travelling as chefs and baristas, and more. “Don’t ever doubt yourself being female. Three women run this place, and we’ve just pulled a pub through a two-year pandemic and our doors are still open.” For your next function, group booking or lunch or dinner out, contact the GV Hotel on 5821 9822 and visit them at 223 High Street, Shepparton.

WE CAN do it all! Let the GV Hotel cater to all your hospitality needs from our delicious bistro menu to our fantastic 5 function rooms, mates rates Friday and relaxed atmosphere!

ADJUSTING

male-dominated

Dr Jen Barker is always up for a challenge, and the physical demands of chiropractic, and barriers faced by women, have driven her to improve and succeed. Having a baby has been a game-changer. “Being in this industry, a contractor and having a baby I found it really tough mentally, physically and financially, particularly during Covid. Physically adjusting patients whilst 36 weeks pregnant with a face shield and mask on was definitely a challenging experience.” “I am lucky enough to have a husband and parents who are very supportive and who understood just how vulnerable having a baby made me feel in relation to work. I was also very lucky to have a supportive workplace whereby I could start back at work at my own pace.”

Dr Yvette LcCerf was always interested in health, but her passion for chiropractics began playing netball. “One day we were playing, and all of a sudden I became stiff, and I couldn’t throw the ball,” she said. A football player on her team helped her by making some adjustments. “He really kicked off my interest.” “Working in a male dominated industry has its challenges. We have clients ask for male doctors, saying that they need someone ‘strong’ to fix them. They’re always assured that the female doctors are just as strong, and they’re always shocked when we give them results beyond what they thought possible.” Dr Julia Bianco started in kinesiology before chiropractic, she’s taken five gap years, failed university, and still has two “expensive pieces of paper,” and a great career to show for it.

WHEN YOUR SPINE NEEDS A HERO WE HAVE YOUR BACK

INDUSTRIES

Julia strongly believes, “If I’m not impressing myself, I’m not impressing anyone.” Reflecting on high school, Julia sees how she wasn’t prepared for life after school, and most damagingly, how she pigeon-holed herself in the “I’m-not-a-smart-girl,” clique. “I convinced myself that I wasn’t the smart girl, that I could only do general maths, not maths methods. That I can do creative subjects like visual arts, but not the sciences.” “There’s so much pressure on young people to ‘get it right.’ Leave the messages at home and give things a go!” Active Spine Centre’s main clinic is in Shepparton, near The Butter Factory complex on Wyndham Street.
