THE INAUGURAL Benalla Airshow took off on Saturday, drawing crowds of over 2,500, with around 30 aircraft having flown into the event.

Spectators were wowed by aerobatic stunts performed by some of Australia’s top champion pilots, including Paul Bennett, a hot air balloon launch in the morning, plus modern and historic gliders, rare and unique warbirds and other aircraft to explore, and markets and street food.

The event was originally planned for 2022, to coincide with the Gliding Club of Victoria’s 70th anniversary in Benalla.

Benalla Airshow event facilitator, Bruce Cowan of the Gliding Club of Victoria, said attendance was less than expected, likely due to the heat, with the mercury soaring past 37 degrees on Saturday.

“We were very happy with the result. It was overwhelming being able to give back to the town,” said Mr Cowan.

He hopes that the airshow may become a regular part of the annual Benalla Festival.

“It was great to celebrate 70 years of the Gliding Club of Victoria in Benalla, and to partner with the local Council and Paul Bennett Airshow to put on a tremendous show for all,” Mr Cowan said.
