Injured birds found near White Rock Lake are regularly taken to the Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Hutchins (more about that on page 46). Usually, the animals are returned to the wild once they’ve healed. But sometimes the birds just don’t want to leave. That was the case for this stunning blue heron, whose feathers display a technicolor rainbow of hues. After restoring the animal to full health, workers released him, but he just hung around. He made friends, establishing a herony (the scientific term for a heron colony), where he can fly free if he likes, although he spends much of his time hanging out with the rescue volunteers.
