In case you were wondering when that bank near Home Depot (on Skillman, north of Northwest Highway) is going to open, well, it’s not. The shell of a bank building recently was demolished, and a QuikTrip 1 will be constructed on the site.
Healing Hands Ministries 2 is celebrating its third anniversary. The nonprofit started off as a small medical clinic in Lake Highlands with one volunteer doctor, and was open five or six days a month to a limited number of low-income families who didn’t have medical insurance. The office has expanded to include a dental clinic, and just recently received $25,000 from The Dallas Foundation for additional expansions to its medical and dental services.
Lake Highlands resident Chad Costas of marketing and advertising agency Black
Lab Creative 3 is celebrating his first Dallas ADDY award. Costas, along with partners Brett Dougall, Eddie Hale and John McFarland, recently received a bronze award from the Dallas Ad League for the design and development of the 2009-2010 Baylor Health Care System Foundation Annual Fund campaign. The ADDY awards are the largest advertising competition in the world with more than 60,000 entries annually, and include three levels of judging: local, regional and national. “We always knew we were awesome. Now, with this award, everyone else knows it, too,” Costas quips, then adds, more seriously: “It is truly an honor to be recognized by Dallas’ premier advertising competition for our work.” The partners named their agency
Black Lab Creative to represent the qualities they stand for: loyalty, determination, passion, and spirit. Photos of the partners’ own black and chocolate labradors can be found on their website, blacklabcreative.com including the newest addition, Hale’s new black labrador puppy, Abbey.
Lake Highlands resident Carol Thomas opened Breakaway Sport & Fitness last year after receiving her CI-CPT (Cooper Institute-Certified Personal Trainer) certification. Thomas provides in-home training for women. Sessions are tailored to the individual’s fitness needs and goals, and she can also develop individualized exercise programs for neighbors who don‘t want to work with a per- sonal trainer, but need direction with their exercise program. Thomas, who was once named the Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year for her work in Carrollton, also works with athletes or teams of all ages on sportspecific conditioning, injury prevention and form improvement. More recently, Thomas started Breakaway Boot Camp, an early morning (6 a.m.) fitness class for women that meets in Lake Highlands. Contact Thomas at 214.802.8932 or ctbreakaway@ gmail.com for information on boot camp or her training services.
