THREE DRINKS FOR A COOLER SUMMER

Story by RACHEL STONE | Photography by KATHY TRAN

The oppressive heat of summer cannot be avoided in Texas. But we have our ways of making it more bearable. When that old unpleasant warmth washes over you and it’s time for a treat, try sipping on one of these local specialties.

Chocolate sales are through the roof in October-May.

August? Not as much.

The family of entrepreneurs behind CocoAndré wanted to make more money during the summer months, so four years ago, they started producing horchata. Now the rice-based milky drink is part of their name: CocoAndré Chocolatier & Horchatería.

The craft drinks cost $4.50-$7 and come in flavors including strawberry, matcha, pecan and cacao. Coco-André recently brought back pineapple horchata because of customer demand, and peach could see a comeback this summer for the same reason. Co-owner Cindy Pedraza Puente says the shop is well-known for its vegan horchata.

This Belgian-style chocolatier also serves aguas frescas in flavors like hibiscus and tamarind, and they serve locally made paletas that can be dipped in chocolate.

The café also serves espresso and craft coffee drinks, plus pan dulces from Alebrijes Café in Oak Cliff.

CocoAndré Chocolatier & Horchatería 508 W. Seventh St. 214.941.3030 cocoandre.com Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday

Here’s a cool treat that brings the heat.

Mangonada is a mango smoothie swirled with chamoy, and in our neighborhood, it can be found in fruiterías and snack bars all around.

At La Chula Michoacana, they come in three sizes that cost $4-$6, and they’re over the top, loaded with candy like Lucas Salsaghetti and served with a candy-covered straw.

Chamoy No. 5 makes its own chamoy, the sticky chile-lime flavored condiment that makes sweet flavors pop. This snack bar’s mangonada is more demure, with less candy, but its greatness is in the simpler ingredients.

La Chula Michoacana 211 W. Jefferson Blvd. 214.238.0513 Hours: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Sunday

Chamoy No. 5 3225 Dawes Drive Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Sunday

This is not the stuff ladled from plastic barrels at a county fair.

Encanto Pops crafts aguas frescas from fresh-squeezed juices and house-made syrups in layered flavors that are utterly delightful.

Aureliano Diaz worked as a bartender for several years and has dreams of owning a cocktail bar. Since he’s already an owner of Encanto Pops with his sisters, Diana Diaz Thompson, Edith Diaz Garza and Paola Diaz, he’s done the next best thing, concocting aguas frescas for customers of their paleta shop.

Favorites include Junior’s Special, which comes with passion fruit, cucumber, blood orange, lime, ginger syrup and cane sugar. The Little Mexico has mango or passion fruit, strawberry, lime, ginger syrup and agave nectar. Many customers order the classic lime and cucumber. And you can also build your own, choosing up to three fruit bases and two syrups.

These 25-ounce drinks cost $9, or $10 with Topo Chico, but they’re made to order and so fresh and tasty, served in a bag just like drinks the Diaz siblings used to buy as kids growing up in Juarez.

Encanto Pops marks its fifth anniversary in business this summer, and its unique hand-crafted pops cost $4-$5.50 each.

The aguas frescas are great for a non-alcoholic treat or served with a splash of spirits.

Renewal comes from recreation

I’m writing from far West Texas, in the Big Bend, Davis Mountains area. We’re on vacation for these next few days and grateful to be out in nature.

One of the most amazing things here is the night sky. We take our lawn chairs out each night, and stare into the vastness of space above.

The entire hazy cloud of the Milky Way band stretches from horizon to horizon. The twinkling stars are so numerous that they are impossible to count.

For as many times as I have seen such a night sky, it never ceases to take my breath away, and it always makes me gasp with wonder.

It’s a view we can’t seek in Oak Cliff. There’s too much city light. Those stars are always there — even in Oak Cliff — but they’re obscured by the lights we tell ourselves we need to feel safe.

The vast, deep West Texas sky reminds me of our relatively small position in the entire universe. It’s a powerful reminder of how small we are. And, therefore, how small the problems and worries we carry around every day.

That Milky Way band knows nothing about our fears, our worries, our concerns. It’s there to humble us, if we allow it.

The Prophet Isaiah comes to mind: “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26)

I’m grateful to God for the gift of the night sky.

It’s summer now, and everything I am hearing about this season from our Oak Cliff families is that the time feels compacted and urgent. The school year has been compressed on both ends. With the world feeling safer to travel, a lot our neighborhood families are heading out during July and early August.

I’m glad to hear that. Maybe you were gone during July. Maybe you’re just leaving now, for a quick pre-school August trip.

Whatever your plans, I hope you can get out into the world this summer. And even if you can’t travel far, remember how blessed we are to have areas like Lake Cliff Park, Twelve Hills, Kidd Springs, White Rock and the Trinity River nature preserve. There are places, just minutes from your front door, that can take your breath away too.

Our minds can trick us. They tell us, “I don’t need to take a break … I can just power-through my job, my family obligations …”

But we must “get away” from time to time. If we don’t take breaks, then burnout, anger and hopelessness set in instead.

There’s a reason why the word “recreate” is a contraction of “re-create.” We must constantly “recreate” in order to create our future. All work and no play is not just sad; it can be dangerous and counterproductive.

All through history, those who’ve created new and innovating things in science and art have often done so after a nap, a walk among nature or after gazing in wonder at the night sky.

I am thinking of the late great Steve Jobs, who was famous for holding business meetings while walking through his Palo Alto neighborhood at night. Some of the greatest technological innovations and concepts of our time came from people who went on a walk outside in nature, with Steve Jobs. After a pandemic year, cooped up in our houses, we all deserve a break this summer. Recreate so you can re-create your life, filled with new hope, energy and compassion.

Neighborhood tips on aging gracefully

Perhaps actress Cameron Diaz said it best: “Growing old is a privilege. Not everyone gets to do it.” On the road to a silver-haired crown, many of us — or our loved ones — will need help. The good news is that there are plenty of nearby neighborhood resources to help ease into that transition. Here are a few tips from neighborhood senior resources to consider if you’re evaluating options for a senior you love. TACKLE TRANSPORTATION. Everyone’s on the go, butfor seniors getting around can be tricky. Surrendering car keys is difficult, especially for seniors living without easy access to resources such as doctors or groceries. “Transportation accessibility is vital because it decreases isolation and increases the physical connections for new opportunities,” says Jonathon Braddick, communitydevelopment manager representing AARP Ride@50+ program. Seniors and their families want to look for a safe and reputable alternative ride services resource for affordable local transportation, Braddick says. NAVIGATE AGING. Vulnerable seniors can be targets of fraud and scams. It’s important for neighbors to advocate and protect the righ of older adults,” says Stacey Malcolmson, president and CEO of The Senior Source. Extra time on your hands? “Look in on a senior neighbor, aid with technology, impact their emotional and financial well-being, and be a resource against social isolation,” she says. “Even caregivers can use help from the most active of us in giving the most vulnerable neighbors a purpose.” START EARLY. “Until we need to know something about senior living, most of us know nothing,” says Tammy Oliver, community relations with Juliette Fowler Communities. “Pre-plan golden years and retain control over your future. Start early, learn what your community offers and what it doesn’t, then designate personal intentions. If you or a loved one go to just one place and later need morecare, then you have to start over. Find a multi-care-level place; make friends where everyone knows and loves you.”

Vintage décor

Rick Furniture was a staple of Oak Cliff shopping

Photo courtesy of the Texas Historical Commission, via University of North Texas Libraries and the Portal to Texas History.

Here’s how the corner of Jefferson and Polk looked in 1980. The corner restaurant still serves Mexican food as La Hechizera Tortas.

Rick Furniture, a company that dated back to 1872 in Dallas, had a storefront on Bishop Avenue starting in 1925 and then moved to Jefferson Boulevard in the ’40s, where it had a presence for decades.

When this store at 1005 W. Jefferson was “modernized” in 1951, its neon sign was touted as “one of the largest of its kind in Oak Cliff.” The building has since been replaced by a four-story office building.

By the late 1970s, the company was being run by a fourth generation of the Rick family and had moved to 611 W. Jefferson, taking over the bygone Sears store where Fiesta Mart is now.

Their 175,000-square-foot store had parking for 500 cars and a play area for kids. Shoppers were offered coffee and soft drinks.

The Rick family closed its Oak Cliff headquarters in 1984 after a dispute with a national computer manufacturer that sold the company an inventory and ordering system that the furniture store’s owners said never worked.
