ABOVE The Petroffs call this the keeping room, a colonial term for the family area near the kitchen. Lined with windows on the east and south sides with skylights above, the room stays true to the Tuscan vibe felt throughout the home. It’s light and open but also warm and cozy at the same time. Several elements of the house are environmentally friendly, including the wooden beams seen here on the ceiling. They are made from roughly 40 percent less wood because they are hollow in the center.
