The lowdown on what’s up with neighborhood businesses

Kel’s Kitchen closes

One of our neighborhood dining institutions is no more. Kel’s Kitchen closed in early August. Owner Johnny Meredith recently had struggled to keep the restaurant open, hoping a new buyer would take over. A deal never materialized, the Dallas Morning News reported. Some loyal patrons dined at Kel’s, off Inwood and Forest, almost daily. The restaurant had been open since 1963.

Modmarket coming to Preston Hollow Village

We now know at least one of the tenants moving into Preston Hollow Village, the high-profile development under construction at the northwest corner of Walnut Hill and Central. Teresa Gubbins at CultureMap reports that the Coloradobased restaurant chain Modmarket will take up residence there along with three other locations in Dallas. The healthcentered restaurant avoids preservatives and artificial sweeteners, and it keeps ingredient lists short, simple and clean. It also prints nutritional information on each meal receipt. Beth Hardy, a publicist for Modmarket, says that they aim to open at Walnut Hill and Central early next year. Trader Joe’s is slated to open there next month.

Two new private schools in Preston Hollow

The new Primrose School of Preston Hollow is now enrolling. The school specializes in early childhood education, using its own philosophy known as the Balanced Learning System, which focuses on cognitive, emotional and physical development, drawing from models such as Montessori, Gesell and Piaget. Headquartered in Georgia, Primrose has schools all over the country, mostly in suburban areas. Each branch, however, keeps things local. Dallas resident and SMU graduate Julia Shelton owns the Preston Hollow school, on Preston just southwest of Royal.

Fusion Academy, a private, for-profit, college-prep middle and high school, opened its first two locations in Texas last month — one of which is at The Shops at Park Lane. The school offers classes year-round, using a one-to-one model of instruction. Students also have access to tutoring, a homework center and therapeutic services. But all of that oneto-one attention comes with a cost: Full-time tuition runs around $35,000-$42,000 a year per student.
