Danville National Guard Unit on Parade (June 21, 1953 - The Advocate-Messenger)
The color guard of Battery “A”, 441st Field Artillery Battalion, Kentucky National Guard, is shown as it led a parade down Main Street Thursday night. In the color guard were (left to right) Cpl. Albert J. Cooper, Sgt. Keith Burckley, Sgt. Robert Sowders and Sgt. Robert Powell, all of Danville.
American Legion Caswell Saufley Post #18,
based in Lincoln County, performs military honors for approximately 130 funerals per year and supports local charities. Photo courtesy of Lynn Young. When someone close to us passes away, we look back at how they have impacted our lives. For veterans, that impact is two fold; their personal lives touch family and friends, and their sacrifice in the military preserves our nation. It is that sacrifice that calls us to remember their service through military honors at a funeral. What most people don’t realize however, is that most of the honors are not provided by the United States Government. The U.S. Government guarantees two active duty service members to fold and present the flag to the next of kin. All other honors are done through a Veteran’s Service Organization (VSO) such as AMVETS, The American Legion, or VFW. In order to receive military honors through a VSO, a DDT214 form will be needed. It is best to provide this form to the funeral home handling the arrangements who will then contact a VSO on behalf of the veteran. The DDT214 form is also needed to request a military footstone or any other veteran’s benefits. Families can request a copy of a DDT214 from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs if they do not have one. To all those who have served or are currently serving in the military, thank you for helping preserve our freedom.
