A Letter from Patty Eagar, Executive Director 2013 was another grand year for Advocates with lots of successes and landmarks! Once again, we have you, our donors and investors to thank for allowing us to do this for over 30 years. It indeed was a year to celebrate while the work continued. Highlights: completion of our new Three-year Strategic Plan and annual operating plan… 20 year anniversary of Every Child’s A Star (thanks Regina Gilbert and her amazing team)… a fabulous Spring Benefit (kudos to Barbara Terry and Regina Shaw and their tireless creative committee)… a dozen years of racing ducks (Nicole Hughes and her amazing crew almost made it look easy, but we know it’s not!)…launch of Hope In Your Home parent education program (our first new initiative since 2008)… exponential growth in number of new parents helped with First Steps… more occupancy than ever before in Flowering Branch with some very happy endings… another year of a spotless Audit (Deborah Parmenter celebrated her 16th anniversary with us, and keeps us looking good in that department)… a huge celebration of our 30th Anniversary (attended by 300 long time and recent friends)…and a nomination as Small Business of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce (the first time a non-profit business had ever been nominated for this honor)… and much more. We have a wonderful professional staff, which makes coming to work every day a complete pleasure, countless community partners, and a terrific energized board committed to making sure we have the resources to make a difference in thousands of young lives every day of every year. Thank you all for being Advocates of Advocates!

A Letter from Matt Moore, Board Chairman The work of Advocates is really the work of our community. Our community cares about children and that is reflected in the broad spectrum of services provided by Advocates for Children. From at-risk infants born in local hospitals to teenagers that have no safe home in which to live, Advocates fills the gaps. The support you provide when you volunteer with First Steps or Rainbows offers new mothers and young children a warm, helping hand. Your contributions at the Polar Plunge, Every Child’s A Star, Spring Benefit and Duck Derby weekend help to feed empty stomachs and provide a voice for the thousands of youth that have been unable to speak. The problems faced by children in our community are real. These kids are our neighbors, they sit next to our children in school or church and they play on the baseball team at the local parks. They are the best kids you could meet, often facing problems we only hear about on the evening news. Your support and generosity make it possible for these kids to be safe and loved. I am proud to be a part of an organization and a community helping to create a brighter future for our youth. Thank you for helping us build that future.

Advocates Welcomes its Newest Program, Hope in Your Home Advocates for Children celebrated 30 years of brightening lives in our community in 2013. The support and generosity of our neighbors and constituents has helped to ensure that our doors remain open for the thousands of children and families we serve every year. We are still growing to meet the needs of our community three decades later. What once began as a small children’s shelter offering beds for five children at a time, has since grown to provide eight programs including our newest addition, Hope in Your Home. This program was designed after recognizing a huge need for preventive services in our community. We are reaching children and families at risk of experiencing child maltreatment but who have not yet had it occur. Our aim is to provide families with in-home treatment, providing healthier ways of parenting and working to create a supportive family environment for the children and their caregivers. In its first year under the Advocates umbrella, 39 families were served including a self referral from a parent that recognized the positive growth that Hope in Your Home could provide to her and her children. One young mother, referred to our staff, was trapped in a home with her three children and her own abusive and neglectful mother. After being offered resources and empowerment to leave her current situation, she now has her own apartment and job, away from the abusive situation in which she grew up. Thank you for helping us to continue to grow and thrive each year. Your kindness helps to remind each child of the opportunity and spirit that shines so brightly in our community.
