9 WAYS TO ADD HEALTH-SPAN TO YOUR LIFESPAN

As we navigate through these modern times, it is decidedly not easy trying to do the best for ourselves and loved ones. No sooner has one reputable health and nutrition study been published, steering you one way, before another follows soon thereafter contradicting the first. If the ‘leaves’ are always going to be changing color then we should at least rely on the forever roots, trunks, and branches for stability in the healthy domain.

We all want to live long lives. However, an increased ‘Lifespan’ is of diminished value if we are chronically ill, demented, or unable to move around… your ‘Health span’.

Here are 9 foundational cornerstones that will cement your lifespan to your health span in a way that makes it all worthwhile.

1Eat a plant-based diet with an emphasis on colorful leafy, cruciferous vegetables such as Cabbages and Broccoli.

2 Avoid low grade chronic inflammation especially from sources like processed cooking seed oils, and substitute for Olive Avocado or Coconut oils.

3 Regard highly processed sugars such as high fructose corn starch, as slow poisons. So, birthday cakes/icing, donuts, sodas etc, create excessive damaging free radicals, and (over time) atherosclerotic plaques, and fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

4 Exercise vigorously (in every decade of your life) including weightlifting for women. I cannot emphasize how pivotally vital the role of overall fitness and exercise plays in determining your individual health span.

5Intentionally stress your body in specific durations and techniques (Hormesis). Learn how to fast, learn how to sauna and practice cold immersion often. Even cold showers may help.

Sleep. Don’t shortchange what your body needs. Strive for quality sleep in a completely darkened room. Absolutely vital brain functions occur only when we sleep, and poor sleep habits may allow a complex pathway to functional Alzheimer’s disease.

If you’re into supplements… consider Resveratrol, Vitamin D3/K2, COq10, Sulfurophane, EGCG(as in green tea), Berberine, Omega 3 fish oil and any supplement that stimulates your NRf2 pathway which leads to your own self production of super antioxidants (Glu- tathione & Superoxide Dismutase).

Treat your gut biome bacteria like your own personal internal kitchen garden. Nourish them with high fiber pro and prebiotics. Refuse/question unnecessary antibiotics prescribed for viral infections. Learn about the millions of mitochondria we all carry around and how we can increase their quantity and quality.

Love family and friends with intensity and receive intense love. Give generously of your time. Express gratitude and develop a sense of peace through mindfulness. Forgive eas- ily. Slow down occasionally and co-mingle with the sunshine in nature.

Green Spaces are Important

Bajans have always made use of green spaces but never knew that’s what they were. For the longest time we have sat under evergreen trees and cooled out under mile trees. Not once thinking to call them green spaces. But now in the face of changing climatic conditions, sea level rise and global warming Small Island States like Barbados are being forced to confront the problems presented in short order. The problems may not have been ours in the making but they will be ours in the solving.

From our inception as a country back in the 17th century Barbados has always been an outpost for the satisfaction and pleasure of others. European settlers removed trees to convert what would

have been natural rain forest to pasture land for growing sugar cane on plantations. These fields and hills would have been covered with trees and plants that were removed regardless of value. Fast forward 500 years and here we are resolving issues that are tough, but not impossible to fix. So where do we begin to resolve this issue and help ourselves in the interim? How do we create more green spaces for our personal and environmental benefits?

The current BLP administration embarked on an initiative to plant more than one million trees as part of the ‘we planting’ Paris Climate Accord in 2018. And that is all it is, a start. Strategic planting to benefit all should be implemented.

The focus has mainly been on beaches to accommodate the tourism industry. But if we don’t curate the land it may all be washed into the ocean. Seemingly disparate problems can both be solved with trees. That’s right, we have the solutions at hand already with two species of trees, mahogany and mangroves. Mahogany was here before the colonists arrived to exploit the abundance of the trees for timber. Now that we know the important niche the trees once held and continue to hold in the ecosystem we can use them as anchor plants for proposed greenspaces. Mahogany takes fifteen to twenty five years to be fully mature given adequate water and nutrition. Mangroves because of its halophytic qualities and their ability to grow along coastal areas would be great to plant in the intertidal zones. They then become anchor plants to hold the beaches in place and be a stalwart against the expected rising sea levels. As an added bonus these trees sequester and store carbon, the propellant of global warming itself. A program that starts with school yards. Greening up those spaces by planting shade trees, giving the surrounding communities access to the space to be used when school is not in session. Studies have shown that green spaces for children reduce stress, blood pressure, depression and obesity while improving their concentration.

As part of the government’s revamping and redesign of the educational system moving forward, green space at each primary school should be incorporated as part of a holistic approach beyond reading, writing and arithmetic. Greening up every public space with trees of any sort can filter noise pollution from traffic as well as pollutants from traffic exhaust. Working with arborists to determine the best for aesthetic and safety purposes a tree policy should go hand in hand with water conservation systems in new house construction. The shade provided has the ability to decrease temperature by as many as ten degrees from surrounding unshaded areas thereby decreasing the amount of energy needed to cool adjacent buildings.

Can you imagine that by 2050, it is estimated that there will be more pieces of plastic present in the world ’s oceans, than actual fish?

Seems unbelievable? Take a look at the photograph above. It shows part of a 5-mile long garbage patch located off the coast of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea, and is similar to another patch located in the Pacific Ocean.

In light of these occurrences, and the environmental and health risks posed by plastic pollution, representatives from around the world including Barbados, attended the Second Session of the

PLASTIC WASTE IN THE CARIBBEAN

Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, which was convened in Paris, France, from May 29 to June 2, 2023, to develop an international legally binding agreement on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.

During this second session, participants discussed various components that an agreement to end plastic pollution should contain. The discussions touched on the phases of the plastic lifecycle where action should be taken, and the form and content of a legally binding instrument to address plastic pollution such as the following areas:

In addition to the areas highlighted above, the agreement on plastic pollution needs to foster collaboration among all countries: through national and regional sharing of information amongst critical stakeholders, learning from each other's successes, conducting joint research, and creating partnerships with businesses, non-profit organizations, and universities,

among other things, to arrive at effective solutions. Once the agreement is concluded in 2024, it will serve as the main tool in the fight against plastic pollution to ensure that current and future generations inherit an environment that is healthy, productive, and enjoyable.

SIMPLE GREEN LIVING TIPS

We are being drawn into a green-living lifestyle for a several reasons, primarily because we want to embrace sound environmental practices, cost-savings initiatives, or the opportunity to instill positive values in the younger generation. Fortunately, green living satisfies all of these areas simultaneously, while offering other benefits at the same time.

Because of the amount of time we spend in at home or at our work places creating an environmentally-sensitive space is a way to practice the green-living lifestyle and make a serious impact. Be it residential or commercial here are some tips you should consider when designing or enhancing your home or business.

PLANTS

Beautify any space with plants placing them strategically. Select those that are low maintenance if you are not a green person Look for plants that don’t require much water, plant trees for shade and wind breaks, and avoid harsh herbicides and pesticides to help cultivate a yard that is more in tune with the surrounding nature.

LIGHTING

A good night’s rest, a productive day at work and a relaxing time in your family room or work areas are all benefits of proper lighting. Start by gradually changing your lights to energy saving LED bulbs.

TREES

Plant trees around your property. Palms, pittosporum hedge, bougainville, sweet lime are a few examples

PATIOS

Design a cool space creating an oasis and an area for relaxation.

ENERGY STAR OPTIONS

Select and change appliances and or electronics with Energy Star models to save cost.

CONSIDER GREEN ENERGY SOURCES

Seek out information relating to solar energy it can give more opportunities for you to use green energy in your home and know that you’re doing your part to reduce carbon emissions.

Passive design strategies focus on harnessing natural resources such as sunlight, wind, and vegetation to reduce the energy demands of a building. By

Retrofitting focuses on upgrading energy systems, insulation, and appliances in existing buildings to enhance energy efficiency. These approaches reduce waste generation, conserve resources, and promote sustainable urban development.

WHAT LED TO THE DECISION?

I decided to switch when gasoline prices became excessively high back in 2014. I chose the Leaf because it was the premier EV on the market at the time and the technology was ahead of its time.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The primary difference between an electric vehicle and a conventional gas powered vehicle is the obvious savings on gasoline and the EV does not cost much to operate on a daily basis. For instance, to charge my EV it cost me roughly $20 in additional cost to my monthly electric bill at home whereas I was spending $160 plus in gasoline per month in my previous vehicle.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE /FEATURES?

EVs come with a multitude of fantastic options and technology they are we’re quieter than gas-powered vehicles, they are a lot quicker from a standing still position because the torch produced is 100% to the wheels so there is no lag time.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO PERSONS WHO ARE THINKING OF SWITCHING?

My advice to anyone thinking about purchasing an EV would be to make sure that you can incorporate it into your daily life because if you drive a lot you may experience some rays of anxiety meaning be aware of where and when you should or will charge up. Consider having a charging station at or near your home however in a small island like Barbados it may not be a problem getting around on a full charge.

It’s no secret that our resources are dwindling with the growing population. The demand and stress it caused the natural environment is worrying. When I thought about my contribution to this, I decided I wanted to be part of the solution. Sustainability has become a lifestyle for me, and my family and it made sense to change the way we move daily. Additionally, the return on investment is incredible. Rebates, tax credits, and less expensive to maintain are an added bonus.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The cost and the way it drives. I’ve noticed I spend less on fuel, and it lasts longer. The smoothness on the road was a feature I quickly picked up on, which makes being in car enjoyable rather than simply being a means to get from one place to the next.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE /FEATURES?

I like how intuitive it is: if the battery is running low, the gas engine starts. When stopped in traffic, the engine temporarily shuts off. A feature that consciously thinks about the vehicle’s contribution to the environment. I feel better about driving knowing I’m not contributing to pollution as much as I would be in a traditional vehicle

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO PERSONS WHO ARE THINKING OF SWITCHING?

Take the leap and do it! Driven by the desire to be sustainable and contribute positively to the environment, I’m happy I made the choice. Sustainability and environmental consciousness are no longer wrapped in an ugly bow. The types of vehicles have evolved, giving us a wide array of choice and style. I’m often surprised when I see a car and find out it’s a hybrid. Hybrid vehicles are the way of the future, join me in being a leader so we can last longer!

What is noticeable is that the vehicle is extremely quiet and only emits a sound when the battery needs charging. Because of this I am extremely cautious when driving especially near pedestrians. It is good on gas and you need to be mindful that accelerating causes the vehicle to use gas while a gradual increase in speed will use the batter

The display features which are on the dashboard as well as on the steering wheel. Push start feature temperature control is not only to the front of the vehicle but is at the back as well which makes it very clear is convenient for passengers. The sensors on the door allows for keyless entry and I can tap to open and tap to lock.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO PERSONS WHO ARE THINKING OF SWITCHING?

The vehicle is an excellent choice for anyone who is concerned about the environment, protecting the ozone layer by reducing fuel emissions. It is important to do your research before purchasing making sure that there is support/after care service when the sale is completed.

Sautéed Shrimp Kebabs on a Bed of Steamed Broccoli Florets, Tomatoes, and Green Peppers.

Ingredients:

For the Shrimp Kebabs:

1 pound (450g) large shrimp, peeled and deveined

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon cumin

Salt and pepper to taste

Skewers (if using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes prior to use)

For the Bed of Vegetables:

2 cups broccoli florets

1 cup cherry tomatoes

1 cup green peppers, sliced

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Tart Mango Chutney Sauce:

1 cup mango, diced

1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped

1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced

1 tablespoon lime juice

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon honey

Salt to taste

Instructions: Prepare the Shrimp Kebabs:

In a bowl, combine the olive oil, minced garlic, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Add the shrimp to the bowl and toss to coat them evenly with the marinade. Let them marinate for about 15-20 minutes. Thread the marinated shrimp onto skewers.

Make the Tart Mango Chutney Sauce:

In a mixing bowl, combine the diced mango, red onion, cilantro, minced jalapeño pepper, lime juice, apple cider vinegar, honey, and salt.

Stir well until all the ingredients are evenly mixed. Adjust the seasoning according to

your taste preference. Set the sauce aside.

Steam the Vegetables:

Fill a pot with a few inches of water and bring it to a boil. Place a steamer basket over the pot.

Add the broccoli florets, cherry tomatoes, and green peppers to the steamer basket. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover the pot with a lid and steam the vegetables for about 5-7 minutes, or until they are tender yet still crisp. Remove from heat and set aside.

Cook the Shrimp Kebabs:

Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil. Place the shrimp kebabs onto the hot pan and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become rubbery.

Remove the shrimp kebabs from the heat and set aside.

Assemble the Dish: Arrange the steamed broccoli florets, cherry tomatoes, and green peppers on a serving platter.

Place the cooked shrimp kebabs on top of the bed of vegetables.

Drizzle the tart mango chutney sauce over the shrimp and vegetables, or serve it on the side as a dipping sauce.

Serve and Enjoy:

Serve the sautéed shrimp kebabs on a bed of steamed broccoli florets, tomatoes, and green peppers while they are still warm. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves, if desired.

Chicken Breast Stuffed with Seasoned Spinach, served with Mash Cauliflower, Roasted Breadfruit

Ingredients:

For the Stuffed Chicken Breast:

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

2 cups fresh spinach, chopped

1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

Olive oil for cooking

For the Mash Cauliflower:

1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets

2 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Roasted Breadfruit Slices:

1 large breadfruit

Olive oil for drizzling

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Steamed Purple Cabbage and Onions:

1 small head purple cabbage, thinly sliced

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Prepare the Stuffed Chicken Breast: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a bowl, combine the chopped spinach, feta cheese, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Make a horizontal cut into each chicken breast, creating a pocket for the stuffing. Stuff each chicken breast with the spinach mixture, pressing it down gently. Heat olive oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the stuffed chicken breasts for 3-4 minutes per side, until they are golden brown.

Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink in the center. Remove from the oven and set aside.

Make the Mash Cauliflower:

Steam the cauliflower florets until tender. Drain any excess water.

In a mixing bowl, mash the steamed cauliflower using a potato masher or fork. Add butter, grated Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper to the mashed cauliflower. Mix well until creamy and well combined. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste.

Prepare the Roasted Breadfruit Slices:

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Slice the breadfruit into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Remove the tough core.

Place the breadfruit slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle olive oil over the slices and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the breadfruit is golden brown and tender. Remove from the oven and set aside.

Steam the Purple Cabbage and Onions:

In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.

Add the sliced purple cabbage and onions to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the skillet with a lid and steam the cabbage and onions for about 8-10 minutes, or until they are tender yet still slightly crisp. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Assemble and Serve:

Place a scoop of the mash cauliflower on each plate.

Add a stuffed chicken breast on top of the mash cauliflower.

Arrange the roasted breadfruit slices and steamed purple cabbage and onions alongside the chicken.

Serve immediately while everything is still hot.
