The city’s vibrant arts and cultural industry continues to evolve.

As mayor, I recall when a decade ago a Melbourne art critic commented that the Gold Coast “was a cultural desert”. Those words stung as I knew they were both untrue and out of touch with reality.

We have a deep and vibrant arts community on the coast.

The 2023 edition of the Bleach Festival showcased our incredible Gold Coast-based creatives. In fact, more than 170 local artists featured on the program including two world premiere performances.

Our HOTA precinct is growing in stature with the Pop Masters exhibition achieving huge interest - and attendances - in the main gallery.

From a council perspective, we continue to see the Level Up arts program expand as we support young emerging visual artists across the coast.

Art is an industry and I view it as a key economic driver for the coast. Major exhibitions like Pop Masters draw

intrastate and interstate visitors who stay longer and spend more - good news for local businesses.

Apart from its role in promoting our city locally, nationally and internationally, the arts sector also reinforces the broader social fabric of our community.

I have always held the view that a “city without art is a city without soul”. Through HOTA, Level Up, the Broadbeach Cultural Precinct, the Gold Coast Eisteddfod and so many other wonderful festivals, we have a fantastic story to tell.

My message to the Melbourne art critic and his friends is: “if you think we are a desert, it has rained and today, our desert is blooming”.

CHALLENGING GOLD COAST BUSHWALKS FOR ADRENALINE JUNKIES

With 691 kilometres of recreational trails and 35,000 hectares of bushland reserves, conversation area and national parks across the city, you’re spoilt for choice.

You can also join guided walks, trail runs and connect with everything that’s Naturally Gold Coast through the NaturallyGC program, provided by The City of Gold Coast. Whether you like to bird watch, photograph, picnic, kayak or just relax in nature, there is something for you.

But for those seeking a challenging bushwalk to traverse creeks, bridges, rocky outcrops and steep steps, we’ve got just the thing.

Here are 9 challenging Gold Coast hiking/biking trails adrenaline junkies will love!

LOWER BEECHMONT CONSERVATION AREA

A rugged area with various trails with steep hills and challenging terrain, the Lower Beechmont Conservation Area covers 775 hectares and is one of the largest conservation areas managed by the City. Frequented by horse riders, mountain bikers and bushwalkers, you’ll have to be self-reliant in this natural environment, and with trail names such as Hellfire Pass, you know it’ll be difficult.

THREE HILLS – NERANG NATIONAL PARK

Three Hills is a fun 2.7km long trail that you can start at the trailhead or at NG26 for a more downhill run. Either way, be prepared to climb more in the beginning, and to be ready to enjoy a long descent. If you start at NG26, the trail takes you southeast, back down the mountain, through tallowwood and grey gum. Be prepared to roll over or around some big stones and roots in the track, and also take on navigate over or around obstacles. Red wallabies may make an appearance, and there are some good views out to the city skyline.

THE GOLD COAST HINTERLAND GREAT WALK –SPRINGBROOK TO LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK

This 54km walk takes you through ancient rainforests and along the shield of an historical volcano and features steep slopes and unformed creek crossings; it usually takes about three days to complete. It’s popular with keen bushwalkers, trail runners and marathoners. Most people walk from west to east and start at Lamington National Park in Green Mountains section (near O’Reillys), and finish at Springbrook National Park.

IF YOU’RE AN ADRENALINE JUNKIE ALWAYS UP FOR A NEW ADVENTURE, WHY NOT RUN OR CYCLE YOUR WAY THROUGH SOME OF THE GOLD COAST’S MOST CHALLENGING TRAILS.

HINZE DAM – ADVANCETOWN

These trails are a hit with runners and cyclists wanting a picturesque way to get their exercise fix but there’s also more difficult walks. Popular with horse-riders, mountain bikers and runners, you can weave your way through some of the fire trails and a dedicated MTB single track through catchment land around the lake. There’s also links to the trail network within the adjoining Springbrook National Park. A café and amenities are on site.

WARRIE CIRCUIT – SPRINGBROOK

This 17km challenging loop track takes you from Springbrook Plateau down through the valley and back, crossing creeks, walking through waterfalls and among some giant historic rainforest. The waterfalls are particularly stunning after rain; bring good shoes and a sense of adventure.

THE BORDER TRACK – TUGUN TO CURRUMBIN VALLEY

Just a few minutes from Tweed Heads, this 22km return track is popular with mountain bikers. It’s a great way to knock out some kilometres but be prepared to grind up a few hills; you’ll have stunning views across the Gold Coast. This track is also busy with trail runners looking to push themselves. Just follow the border fence that divides QLD and NSW from Tugun to Bains Road Currumbin Valley.

NERANG NATIONAL PARK

Home of the mountain bike race during the 2018 Commonwealth Games, this park has steep stony trails

that are also suitable for strong walkers, but walkers be sure to avoid the dedicated MTB tracks. The bike trails range from easy to expert and scenery is dry rainforest and open eucalypt forests. Horse riding is allowed on a designated track. In rainy weather the steep trails are super slippery.

POLLY’S CLIMB AND PAGES PINNACLE –NERANWOOD

What goes up, must come down! Polly’s Climb is a steep quest to the summit with an exhilarating descent. Push yourself to the limit with added trails to Pages Pinnacle – an impressive 400m volcanic plug sitting proudly between Springbrook and the Numinbah Valley. This one is not for the faint hearted but the views are well worth it.

Bushwalking tips for adrenaline junkies

• Don’t forget your phone or GPS, not just so you can track your awesome trek but also for safety reasons.

• Be prepared for the worst and carry spare tubes or puncture kit in car or on you, also basic first aid gear.

• Tell someone your plans in case you have a bad stack or lose your way.

• Always carry plenty of water to stay hydrated and be sun smart.

• Stick to the trails, take rubbish with you and check the weather forecast for warnings.

Panezski Artisan Distillery

At Panezski Artisan Distillery, you can experience a slice of Polish history without leaving the Gold Coast. Producing small-batch vodka, the distillery at Molendinar includes a boutique 1920s-themed tasting room where it hosts regular cocktail and vodka appreciation nights. If you would like the distillery to host an event of your own, the venue can hold up to 60 people.

The Wattle Hotel

A community-minded venue in the heart of Coomera, The Wattle Hotel is a contemporary pub that anyone would be stoked to call their local. Surrounding Regatta Waters Lake at Oxenford, Damien Leeding Park is the perfect place to get some fresh air and exercise, and enjoy the Gold Coast’s enviable weather. One of the Gold Coast’s most picturesque parks, Paradise Point Parklands overlooks the beautiful Broadwater. The park’s boardwalk and pathways are ideal for a stroll and there’s an expansive dog exercise area for your four-legged family members. Charis Seafoods

Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area

If you’re looking to bask in natural beauty, it’s hard to beat a visit to Coombabah Lakelands. The park’s flat terrain and dedicated tracks make it an ideal destination for bushwalking and mountain bike riding. The conservation area comprises a variety of habitats, including wetlands, mangroves, eucalypt forests and salt marshes, and is home to an array of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos, koalas, flying foxes and dozens of different bird species.

ICONIC AUSTRALIAN ANIMALS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM ON THE GOLD COAST

THE GOLD COAST IS ONE OF THE MOST BIODIVERSE CITIES IN AUSTRALIA WITH 1730 FLORA AND 585 FAUNA SPECIES AND A VAST AREA OF THE CITY’S LAND MADE UP OF NATIONAL PARKS, CONSERVATION PARKS, DAM CATCHMENTS AND NATURE REFUGES.

The City of Gold Coast (the City) manages more than 730km of bush trails and some 13,000 hectares of natural areas and when you add this to more than 12,000 hectares of Ramsar-listed wetlands, nearly 5000 hectares of World Heritagelisted Gondwana rainforest, 52.8km of sandy beaches and more than half the city’s land mass covered in native vegetation, it’s little wonder the opportunities for interacting with some of Australia’s most iconic species are plentiful on the Gold Coast.

We’ve pulled together a list of some of the city’s easiest-to-spot critters and where to find them, but remember, never feed animals in the wild, don’t disturb their habitat or nesting spaces, and always observe from a distance.

BUSH STONE-CURLEW

You’ll know if you have a bush stone-curlew living near you. Their call is evocative and unforgettable. Southeast Queensland’s Land for Wildlife team describes it as “a penetrating, strident, wail, rising with a slight waver, and

dropping at the end and often repeated a number of times in quick succession.” The bush stone-curlew is a relatively common, nocturnal bird and at night are often seen in open grassy areas where they’re on the prowl for insects and lizards. Where to see them: Pratten Park, Broadbeach Phillip Park, Main Beach (look around the garden beds and forest edges)

KOALA

The koala needs little introduction. It’s Australia’s most iconic animal as well as our largest tree-dwelling marsupial. Because koalas get all the food (and water) they need from eucalyptus leaves, chances are this is where you’ll find them, although they do come to the ground to move between trees, particularly when active in the morning or early evening. Look closely for scratches on trees with smooth bark or at the base of the tree for round, 1-2cm bullet-shaped droppings. Other signs there are koalas about are scratches on trees with smooth bark and round 1-2cm bullet-shaped droppings

at the base of trees. And while koalas are all cute and furry on the surface, their call is somewhat unsettling, taking the form of bellowing (a sound which both males and females make) and sometimes including snarls, squeaks and screams. So, while you’re looking around for koalas, keep an ear out for their distinctive call.

While there’s plenty of places where you can pose for a photo with a koala in captivity, we’re lucky on the Gold Coast that there are also spots where you’ve got a decent chance of seeing them in the wild.

Where to see them: Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area (it’s no coincidence one of the walks is named the Koala Track). Burleigh

Ridge Park

HUMPBACK WHALE

The Gold Coast is smack bang in the middle of the ’humpback highway’ making it the ideal place to see these gentle giants as they make their way from Antarctica to our warmer waters and back. While the region used to be a rest stop for humpbacks, Gold Coast has now become a whale nursery, meaning that female whales that traditionally gave birth further north have started to do so 1000 kilometres to the south. This is exciting news for whale-lovers. Not only can you see these whales up close on dozens of organised whale watching expeditions which run between May and November, it also means you can see whales from any number of headlands and beaches that dot the length of the City’s coastline.

Where to see them: You can see humpback whales anywhere along the beaches of the Gold Coast, but the higher you get (think any of the city’s iconic headlands) the more likely you are to spot them by scanning the horizon for ‘blow’ (when whales expel air from their blowholes) and the tell-tale splashes of whales breaching and slapping their tails on the water.

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN

We’re lucky here on the Gold Coast that encounters with dolphins are common, especially if you’re making use of the city’s incredible beaches and waterways. Because bottlenose dolphins are so common and occur pretty much anywhere along Australia’s coastline, the best way to see one is to get out onto the water – these dolphins love harbours, bays, lagoons, estuaries and the waters around islands – but landlubbers get their fair share of dolphin sightings too, especially with a coastline as long and accessible as the Gold Coast’s.

ALBERT’S LYREBIRD

The Albert’s lyrebird appears to be an unassuming bird, yet it is highly sought after by birdwatchers the world over. One of the reasons why is because it is a very wary bird and it’s estimated there are only 3500 birds left in the wild. On top of that, the Albert’s lyrebird has one of the smallest distributions of any bird in Australia. Yet, here on the Gold Coast, in-the-know birders see them regularly.

You’ll usually hear this lyrebird before you see it. Albert’s lyrebirds are known for mimicking other species (especially bowerbirds, whipbirds and rosellas) often in long, unbroken calls. Winter is a great time to find them as the male will call for many hours of the day in an attempt to attract a mate during breeding season.

Despite the iconic call, Albert’s lyrebirds are hard to spot. They’re well camouflaged, tend to be found in habitats with low light (think the rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests of the Gold Coast hinterland) and are shy and elusive.

Where to see them: Springbrook National Park (Twin Falls circuit and the walk to the Best of all Lookout)
