Adwick Primary Year 4 Autumn Newsletter Welcome from the Year 4 staff:

Class 9 – Fantastic Foxes Miss Wells and Mrs Horn

Class 10 – Learning Lions Mr Filby, Mrs Prescott and Mrs Davidson Topics Our Topics for the Autumn term are ‘Habitats’ in the first half term and An African Locality in the second half term. In the first half term we will be learning what a Habitat is and will be exploring the local habitats for humans and other organisms. The children will be learning what makes a good habitat and how different creatures are suited to their environment. In the second half of the term we will be learning about differences between localities and cultures. Trips As part of our topic on Habitats in the first half term we will visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. This is an exciting opportunity for children to get close up with some exotic and more familiar wild animals while developing their scientific skills. Parent Workshop We would like to invite parents to participate in a workshop on Wednesday 23 rd October from 1pm to 3pm. The workshop will involve creating a model habitat for an animal of the children’s choice using recycled and natural materials. More details will be sent out nearer the date Reading

Reading Challenge

Your child will be bringing home a new reading record this term. Please use this to record when they have read at home. Children in Year 4 are being encouraged to change their own reading books when they have finished them so keeping the reading record up to date helps your child with this responsibility.

The Adwick Primary Reading Challenge will be running again this term so please look out for when it starts. Get into the habit of recording reading in the reading record now! Golden Rules Children are rewarded with Golden Time (45 minute clubs run on a Friday afternoon) for keeping the Golden rules. Children also bring home a Good Behaviour ticket on a Friday to show that they have kept the Golden Rules all week so look out for these. The Golden Rules are: We are gentle, We work hard, We listen, We are honest, We look after property, We are kind and helpful.

Literacy and Numeracy for Autumn Literacy: Children will be learning the skills for writing recounts linked to newspaper reports and creating images in poetry, In the later part of the Autumn term the children will learn about and write stories from other cultures and information texts Numeracy: Children will be learning a range of skills from the Numeracy Framework. They will be developing the skills of counting, partitioning and calculating; securing number facts, relationships and understanding shape; handling data and measures. Please help your child by involving them in solving problems in real contexts such as calculating totals for shopping, working out change, sharing between groups, doubling or halving and using measures of time (how long between tea and bed time), weight (weighing out ingredients for tea, reading weights on food packaging) and capacity (how much their water bottle holds when full, how much they drink in a day).

Jumpers, Water bottles, P.E. and morning fruit Could you please make sure that children’s names are written in their jumpers (if you don’t have a suitable pen for labelling ask a member of staff). All children need to bring a water bottle to school which they can refill during the day. Every child learns better with good nutrition. After a healthy breakfast your child would benefit from a mid-morning snack. Please send your child with some fruit that they can enjoy at morning break. P.E. Year 4 have P.E. on a TUESDAY. Please send your child with their correct P.E. kit. Kit should be a plain, white, round neck T-shirt, black shorts and trainers or P.E. pumps. If children have pierced ears that have been in longer than 6 weeks they must be removed on P.E. days. This is in accordance with safety guidelines for P.E. Newly pierced ears can be covered with micropore tape. Please provide this for your child to put on, along with a note wherein you accept responsibility for any injury caused by using tape over earrings. Homework Children will be given one maths and one literacy homework each week, linked to the skills they are learning in class. Spellings are given to learn each week. It is expected that children practice them at home each night in an effort to learn them. Children will on occasion be asked to carry out research linked to the topics they are studying. Please remember that reading is a vital part of homework so try to put aside 10 minutes each day to read with your child.

Reading for pleasure at a young age has a significant impact on success in later life!

Morning Learning You are still welcome to accompany your child into class in a morning where they use their time before register to do a morning learning activity or to improve a piece of learning they have already undertaken.
