Year 1 newsletter – Spring 2014 We hope you have enjoyed the Christmas break and that 2014 has started well! Hopefully this newsletter will answer any questions that you may have, but please feel free to speak to Miss Kane or Miss Mellor if you would like further clarification on anything. Homework This year we intend to give homework which will support the learning that we have been doing in Maths and Literacy lessons. Homework will be set on a Friday and it will be expected in on the following Friday. Should your child need any help with their homework, they are more than welcome to bring it back to class unfinished in order to check aspects with the teacher. PE Class three have PE on a Monday afternoon and a Tuesday afternoon. Class four have PE on a Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning. In order to take part in PE children need to bring in:  A white T-shirt  Black shorts/jogging bottoms (weather dependent)  Pumps for Tuesday sessions  Trainers for the classes other session (where ever possible we would like the children to go out for one of their PE lessons but again this is weather dependent.) In addition to this we would also like to ask that those with pierced ears either wear earrings that they are able to remove on those days. Tape can only be sent in for children who have had their ears pierced in the last 6 weeks. Girls should also have a bobble in order to tie their hair back. Can all PE kit come with names written in and in a PE bag which also include their name. Literacy We currently learning about writing a recount, and the children have all done really well with this. We started this by recounting what they did over the Christmas holidays. We will follow this up with non fiction texts and finding information. By the end of the term we will be looking at poetry. Numeracy In numeracy we have progressed beyond our previous learning to start working with money. We have even been working out doubles and halves. We continue to look at counting, addition and subtraction of different amounts. Future areas of study will include handling data, measuring and partioning. Topic

Our current topic is ‘Inventions’. We have not yet started this however, due to our exciting work in culture week. When we begin this topic we will be looking at transportation, inventions from the past and the inventors who made them. We will even be making our own inventions later on in this half term. In culture week we learned about India. We tasted Indian food, looked at Indian clothes and completed some Bollywood dancing. After half term we will be looking at Space which is very exciting as we hope to get a Planetarium in school. Reading Extra to the maths and literacy homework which we will be setting weekly, we would also really like the children to read at home. We would encourage you to record this in the children's planners. Please remember that if a child manages to read with an adult three times in one week at home they are able to move in the ladder in the 'Adwick Primary reading challenge'. Those pupils at the top of the ladder at the end of the half term will be entered into a prize draw. In school we are also completing one hour of Read Write Inc per day, where we learn a variety of letter sounds and how to use them when reading. Trips and enrichment days As part of our Inventions topic there will be a trip. We will walk down to Adwick train station, from there we will go to Doncaster train station and come back again. We can’t wait for our train ride; it will be on the Wednesday 22nd of January. We hope to invite you in later in the half term in order to make our own inventions. Mornings It is always lovely to see parents in school with their children on a morning and we would like to reiterate that you are more than welcome to come into class with your child. They will be able to show you around the room and the things that we have been doing. With our tight timetable we need to start our register at 8.30am so we would appreciate it if you could leave your child on the carpet by this time. Milk, fruit and water Each child in our classes are provided with a piece of fruit to eat in their break time. Those children who are registered on cool milk ( https://www.coolmilk.com/) also receive a carton of milk to drink at break time. If you would like your child to receive milk please speak to Mrs. Dowey in the office, who can give you more information. Children are welcome to bring a water bottle into school with them but please ensure it only contains water, unless it is a part of their packed lunch. Cake sale On the 28th of January we are holding a cake sale. It is also an opportunity for you to take a look at your child’s work. It would be lovely to see lots of parents there, Miss Kane and Miss Mellor.
