Steve Harvey and Ford Bring Neighborhood Awards to Atlanta

By Terry Shropshire This writer’s first introduction to the Steve Harvey Ford Neighborhood Awards (formerly the Hoodie Awards) was a startling site that inspired both pride and amusement. Lounging inside the Mandalay Bay Casino Resort and Hotel on the famous Strip in Las Vegas five years ago, I suddenly noticed that a long river of urbanites, decked in all white, began trickling through to the casino area to reach the rear where the convention center was located. Non-black tourists sitting at the bars and slot machines suddenly stopped and craned their necks almost in unison, looking on with cartoon-like amazement, some with their mouths agape when that trickle of white linen-cloaked partiers quickly mushroomed into a tidal wave of black humanity. They first walked in by the dozens, then by the hundreds and finally by the thousands, making the trek to attend the Freedom Friday Party during the Steve Harvey Ford Neighborhood Awards weekend. That’s when I and many other people realized Steve Harvey had captured something special, something unique … and huge. “It has become an amazingly popular vacation destination for our fans, with many events on the weekend leading up to the awards show,” said Rushion McDonald, co-creator of the Steve Harvey Neighborhood Awards. McDonald put on the very first “Hoodie Awards,” a small and intimate affair in Houston, nearly 15 years ago. Terri Vaughn hosted that event and Tina Knowles was the winner of the first Best Beauty Salon awards. After putting the show on the back burner, he and Harvey recently brought the show back to life. Remarkably, without overt advertising and no television exposure, the Steve Harvey Ford Neighborhood Awards weekend extravaganza

has rocketed to the top of the awards season, as one of the most popular awards shows and weekend getaways in urban America. In excess of 10,000 African Americans have flooded the venues in previous years for the Freedom Fright party, the comedy shows, A-list concert performances, the expo and, of course the Neighborhood Awards. The thing that makes the Neighborhood Awards unique is that it is the only one of its kind on a national scale where the celebrities bestow awards to the real stars of the community — to the everyday man and woman. “I always look at doing the Neighborhood Awards as an act of service,” said singer Kem who promises to make it pop when he performs during the weekend. “And giving recognition to businesses and entrepreneurs in communities where they don’t necessarily get it on a regular basis. Steve has been a supporter of what I did, and love him for that. So anytime he calls, I try to answer that call. Steve is doing great things from his platforms in order to give back. I consider it a blessing to be a part of it.” Now with a change in name from the “Hoodie Awards” or “Hoodies” to “Neighborhood Awards,” comes a change of venue to arguably the largest and most successful collection of African Americans in the country, Atlanta. And while he expected support, McDonald admits he was pleasantly surprised at the depth and breadth of it. “When we came to Atlanta, I’ll be perfectly honest, man, I didn’t expect the welcome mat that the city of Atlanta gave our event.. Mayor Kasim Reed did a press conference with us on Feb. 6. The tourism board, the convention bureau, they put us on the cover of their magazine. We did a two-year contract with all 12 of their downtown hotels of our choosing. We did multi-year contracts with Phillips Arena and the GWCC. I didn’t expect this.”

McDonald and Harvey should expect the Ford Neighborhood Awards weekend takes over the center of the city on Aug. 7 - 10. The Freedom Friday party? … Sold Out. The Freedom Friday after party? … Sold out. The Stand Up Comedy Jam on Thursday? … Sold out. The Stand Up Comedy Jam on Friday? … Sold out. The Neighborhood Awards tickets? Going fast, soon to be gone. And then there are the performances from the likes of the aforementioned Kem along with Anthony Hamilton, Robin Thicke, Tamela Mann, Bell Biv Devoe, Chrisette Michelle and India.Arie. During the Ford Neighborhood Awards, Harvey and McDonald are coming just as hard, bringing celebrity presenters to give out awards to the community winners including Shemar Moore, Kandi Burruss, Michael Ealy, Tracee Ellis Ross, Michael Jai White and comedians Earthquake and Kim Whitley and so many others. Is that all? Not even close. McDonald riddled off a dizzying array of activities that will take place throughout the weekend. There will be a TV Film Festival where organizers will present four films. Inside the Expo hall, vendor exhibitions will run for the full three days of the Neighborhood Awards, instead of just the four hours in previous years. There will be a college recruitment site inside the expo where students can register for college at elite schools like Harvard, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Loyola Marymount and Marquette. There will also be a Video Game Zone, a Celebrity Zone and a Radio Row where other radio show personalities will be available. “We want the weekend to become our version of the Comic Con,” McDonald said.

FedEx Corp. may be the largest drug dealer in the United States, according to a 27-page indictment handed down by the United States District Court on July 17. On Tuesday, June 29, the corporation, which faces fines of at least twice the $820 million profits it gained for transporting illegal drugs, pleaded not guilty on 15 counts of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and misbranded drugs and drug trafficking. “We are a transportation company, not a pharmacy, not a website, not a doctor,” said Cris Arguedas, a lawyer for FedEx. According to the indictment, from at least as early as 2004, DEA, FDA and members of Congress and their staff informed FedEx that illegal Internet pharmacies were using its shipping services to distribute controlled substances and prescription drugs in violation of the Controlled Substances Act, the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and numerous state laws. According to the indictment, FedEx established a sales policy in which all online pharmacies were assigned to a “catchall” classification to protect the commission-based compensation of its sales professionals from

the volatility caused by online pharmacies moving shipping locations often to avoid detection by the DEA. According to the indictment, as early as 2004, FedEx knew that it was delivering drugs to dealers and addicts. FedEx’s expressed safety concerns that FedEx trucks were stopped on the road by online pharmacy customers demanding packages of pills, or that the delivery address was a parking lot, school, or vacant home where several car loads of people were waiting for the FedEx driver to arrive with their drugs. In response to these concerns, FedEx adopted a procedure whereby Internet pharmacy packages from problematic shippers were held for pick up at specific stations, rather than delivered to the recipient’s address. “The United Parcel Service Inc. agreed last year to forfeit $40 million in payments from illicit online pharmacies under a non-prosecution agreement with the U.S. Justice Department. Walgreen Co. and CVS Caremark Corporation have paid a total of more than $150 million in civil fines over claims they sold medications knowing they weren’t for legitimate medical use,” states one report.

FHFA Announces Atlanta HARP Outreach Program The Federal Housing Finance Agency today announced an outreach event to reach remaining homeowners who could benefit from the Home Affordable Refinance Program. FHFA Director Mel Watt will join housing experts and community leaders in a town hall-style meeting at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on August 14. The event will highlight the benefits of HARP and provide tools to help community leaders encourage the more than 34,000 Atlanta area residents still eligible to participate to take advantage of HARP. These eligible borrowers could save as much as two thousand dollars each per year by refinancing their mortgage. “Atlanta is one of the cities with the highest number of borrowers who could benefit from HARP but have yet to take advantage of the program,” said Watt. “Our goal is to engage directly with local community leaders to help spread the word to borrowers who are missing out on a chance to save on their monthly mortgage payment.” The Atlanta event will include remarks by Director Watt and a panel discussion moderated

by Sandra Thompson, FHFA’s Deputy Director for Housing Mission and Goals, and featuring representatives from Fannie Mae; Freddie Mac; the U.S. Department of the Treasury; Regions Mortgage, and a representative from D&E, A Financial Education and Training Institute, Inc. FHFA last year launched a nationwide public awareness campaign and the website HARP.gov to reach eligible borrowers and encourage them to participate in HARP. The campaign now includes town hall-style events in cities that have the highest number of eligible borrowers with a financial incentive to refinance. According to FHFA’s interactive online map, the estimated number of eligible borrowers in the Atlanta metropolitan statistical area who would benefit from HARP (so called “in-the-money” borrowers) is 34,668. Borrowers are considered “in-the-money” if they meet the basic HARP eligibility requirements, have a remaining balance of $50,000 or more on their mortgage, have a remaining term on their mortgage of greater than 10 years, and their mortgage interest rate is at least 1.5 percent higher than current market rates.

To be eligible for HARP, homeowners must meet the following criteria: • Their loan must be owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. • Their mortgage must have been originated on or before May 31, 2009. • Their current loan-to-value ratio must be greater than 80 percent. • They must be current on their mortgage payments with no late payments in the last six months and no more than one late payment in the last 12 months. FHFA and the U.S. Department of the Treasury introduced HARP in early 2009 as part of the Making Home Affordable program. As of May 2014, more than 3.1 million homeowners have refinanced through HARP. HARP is one of the only refinance programs that allows borrowers with little or no equity to take advantage of low interest rates and other refinancing benefits.

NeNe Leakes Line Sells Out in Just One Day Joining the list of reality royalty turned fashion designer, one of Atlanta’s favorite housewives, Nene Leakes of “Real Housewives of Atlanta” has created a line of staple favorites, HSN, that will be a perfect addition to your fall wardrobe. “I wanted my collection to be bold and give women of all shapes and sizes the opportunity to look and feel fabulous,” Nene said, who herself is a size 10. “I want my clothing line to be versatile. A lot of the pieces can take you from day to night; from the grocery store to drinks with your girlfriends. I believe that every woman deserves her moment to shine.” The 17-piece collection features a little something for every size and shape with loose blouses, relaxed pull-on pants, cardigans and more. The “Dancing with the Stars” contestant said she was inspired by “modern streamlined silhouettes”

resulting in “pieces that elongate and slim the body.” Even though Leakes did not win “Celebrity Apprentice,” it was important to market to a diversity of sizes and lifestyles. “There are a lot of curvy women in my family, and we’re tall, so this was personal. I wanted pieces that you could pop on in the morning and look great in. That was my inspiration,” she said. Debuting in the last week of Julu, most of her collection has sold out. Now that’s rich.

Local Residents and City of Atlanta Vow to Fight Crime

People attending the “National Night Out” meeting at Shamrock Gardens Apartments look on as a white dove is released in remembrance of those killed in the city because of crime. Photo: Horace Henry By Horace Henry City of Atlanta officials and residents living at the Shamrock Gardens Apartments assembled on Monday, July 28 to make a statement. National Night Out is a new community safety program initiative introduced by local officials to increase awareness and resident support for crime fighting and prevention measures. The program promotes individual responsibility and emphasizes that residents are the eyes and ears in the war on crime and that they can make a difference. City Council President Ceasar Mitchell addressed the crowd and assured those who attended that they would have the full cooperation of the Atlanta City Council and the City of Atlanta, including law enforcement and public safety officers. Mitchell also implored resident to be vigilant and stated they need not fear reprisal for reporting crime or any suspicious activity they see in their community. The gathering, sponsored in conjunction with The Legacy Community Housing

Corporation, was held on Plaza Lane in the heart of the Shamrock Gardens Apartment Complex. Fulton County Commissioner John Eaves also addressed the gathering, saying that Fulton County fully supports and stands shoulder- to-shoulder with the City of Atlanta in its effort to combat crime. Councilmember Mary Norwood also addressed the group and councilman H. Lamar Willis also participated in the community event. The gathering was designed to allow residents to approach members of the Atlanta Police Department and engage in dialogue with them to express their concerns about their community. Members of the Atlanta Fire Department were also represented. AFD is significant because in most cases the first responders to emergency calls are members of the fire department. The evening also included a moment of silence to pay homage to those children and others who had been killed because of criminal activity in the Atlanta community. A white dove was released, symbolic of those whose lives were lost.

ways women can live forever (almost) So many women are superwomen, juggling countless tasks, acting as the family’s all-around go-to person, and making sure that everybody stays as happy and healthy as possible. That is, everyone except themselves. Women are generally so busy doing so much that they often forget that their needs and their health are just as important as everybody else’s. Thankfully, there are many different things that these superheroes can do to make sure they stay around for a long, long time: Make Yourself A Priority Women take care of others, but they should also take steps to be healthier themselves. Many times, women feel (or are told) that they’re being selfish if they make themselves a priority. But this is not true for two reasons: •A woman, all by herself, is valuable and worthy of outstanding care. •If a mom gets sick because she’s not taking care of herself, her family suffers. Studies show that if the lady of the house isn’t happy, nobody is. So never feel guilty about making your own health and well being a priority…you deserve it. Eat Healthy “Eat your fruits and vegetables!” Sound familiar? Well, don’t forget that this is great advice for the women saying it, too! Women need a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein to help their bodies stay vital. Exercise One of the best things you can do to stay healthy and feel great is exercise. There are almost countless benefits to staying active: •It reduces your risk of certain diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes •It helps you stay slim, as well as look and feel sexy •It boosts your mental health •It helps you perform daily activities and chores more effectively •It strengthens your body What type of exercise should you do? Whatever you like to do: go for a run, a bike ride, a swim in the pool, take a gym class, dance… there are SO many options. Just make sure you get it in for no less than 30 minutes, 5 times a week. Lose Weight You already know that being overweight isn’t

good for your health. According to the National Cancer Institute, being overweight in midlife increases your risk of death between 20 and 40 percent. The best way to lose weight is to be sensible about it: don’t swear you’re going to give up cake forever (unless you really want to), and vow to only eat 1,000 calories a day. Steps like this won’t last. Instead, cut out a couple hundred calories every day (for example, stop mindlessly snacking as you cook dinner), and exercise regularly. It may also help to talk to a professional about a weight loss plan that will work for you and your goals. Make Doctor’s Appointments A Priority According to Dr. Tyese Gaines, Health Editor of theGrio, moms should follow a head-totoe checkup guide to help them stay strong and healthy: Eyes. It’s not just about vision — eye doctors can tell early signs of high blood pressure, high

cholesterol or diabetes just by looking at the back of eye. Vision can also change with pregnancy or after birth. And around 40, seeing things close up becomes more difficult. Early screening for diseases like glaucoma and problems with the retina can prevent or delay blindness. Sleep apnea. Snorers with daytime sleepiness should discuss the possibility of sleep apnea with their doctors. Typically classified by hundreds of moments of apnea — where a person stops breathing during sleep — the brain doesn’t get enough oxygen during these episodes. The condition can raise the risk of high blood pressure, stroke and mental health disorders. Obese men with certain types of nose structures are most affected, but women are not exempt. Teeth. A new statement from the American Heart Association says that, while there’s a link between gum disease and heart disease as previously stated, there is no current proof that

troubled gums cause heart attacks and stroke. There is still, however, a link between poor dental care and preterm labor — not to mention the cosmetic aspects. Regular dentist visits are even important for those with dentures: dentists can screen for signs of tongue or mouth cancers. Thyroid. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, controls metabolism. Women are more likely to have difficulties with this organ, causing their metabolism to either speed up or slow down, and, in some cases, cause infertility. As the thyroid speeds up metabolism, women tend to be thin despite eating a lot, feel anxious with a fast heart rate, and have an intolerance to heat. When it’s slow, women tend to be overweight, with menstrual irregularities, frequently cold and sometimes depressed. Thyroid screening involves blood tests and a physical examination looking for lumps in the gland that signal a deeper problem. See 10 Ways page 7

Men Can Get Healthier With 10 Little Words activity most days of the week. This includes cardio and weight training.

Men in general aren’t exactly well known for always taking great care of themselves. But, when you think about it, every man owes it to himself, and to his family (if he has one) to stay healthy. So, here are some super-quick tips to look better, play harder and live longer. Breakfast Eating something healthy every morning means you’ll be less likely to be so hungry later on that you end up grabbing some unhealthy snack that won’t do you any favors. Eating breakfast also boosts your metabolism. Sleep Seven to eight hours of sleep a night. That’s the ticket to living longer, being a healthier weight, stressing less, and remembering more stuff. Floss Do you like having teeth? If so, buy some floss! You can brush all day long, and still not touch all the bacteria-filled gunk hiding out between your teeth. Also, did you know that bacteria can actually increase your heart disease risks? Breathe Umm, you kinda do it anyway, so why not use it to help you de-stress and calm your nerves? For a super-quick, super-calming exercise, slowly breathe in through your nose as you count to seven, letting your chest and stomach expand. After a second or two, slowly exhale through your nose, again counting to seven. Do this several times a day, especially when something is stressing you out. Get in a little stretching while you’re at it! Yoga class, anyone? Cook You know exactly how much fat and how

many calories are in your favorite restaurant dish, right? Believe us…you have no idea. Cooking more gives you better control of your nutrients and calories. Don’t forget to cook lean meats, along with lots of colorful vegetables and whole grains. Sex Men feel emotionally and physically outstanding when they have an active sex life. According to WebMD, there are countless health benefits attributed to sex, including a stronger immune system, lower heart disease risks, and even lower prostate cancer risks. Just make sure that you’re protecting yourself and your partner every time, getting regular STD screenings, and consistently taking the proper STD treatment if necessary.

Talk Men are well known for being kinda stoic and tight-lipped when it comes to their problem. Men are also well known for being more stressed and having more heart health issues. Is there a connection? Possibly! So, talk to a loved one about things that are bothering you. A good listener really does help boost your health. Sweat So. About that gut. Your waist circumference should be less than half your height. If it’s higher, then you’re at a higher risk of either having a heart attack, becoming a diabetic, and even having less testosterone. You do not want any of these things. In addition to eating right, exercise is the best way to keep your body and mind in great shape. So get in at least an hour of

Doctor Again, men are notorious for just not liking the doctor’s office. Little secret: very few people actually do. However, doctors help you stay healthy. Staying healthy makes you and everybody else happier. So, at the very least, visit your doctor once a year for an annual check-up, report any problems that come up immediately, make sure you get in all necessary screenings, and be sure to keep a copy of your medical history and your medical records. Just in case. In addition to regular doctor visits, at least once a month, do a self-check of your entire body. Nobody knows your body the way you do, so if you get used to the way your body looks and feels, you’re more likely to quickly spot any problems and talk to your doctor about them. This includes checking your testicles for bumps, a rough/hard patches, and how they’re hanging (one should hang slightly lower than the other). Laugh Finding reasons to smile and laugh more can help lower your blood pressure, alleviate stress, improve your immune system, and simply puts you in a better mood. Who doesn’t like to laugh??? Five Easy Ways to Get in More Greens and Fruit

You’ve probably already heard that a healthy diet can help reduce a host of diseases and conditions, as well as help improve how your body looks and performs. But now, a new study is singling out one food group in particular as the one that can really help save your life. But…there’s a catch. According to HealthDay, researchers analyzed the eating habits of more than 65,000 people in England between 2001 and 2013. Their findings? • People who ate seven or more portions of fresh fruits and vegetables a day (twice the recommended amount in the United States) had a 42 percent lower risk of premature death at

6

any age. • People who ate five to seven potions of produce had a 36 percent lower risk of death. • People who ate three to five potions of produce had a 29 percent lower risk of death. “We all know that eating fruit and vegetables is healthy, but the size of the effect is staggering,” study author Oyinlola Oyebode, at the department of epidemiology and public health of University College London, said in a university news release. Are Fruit Or Veggies More Important? The researchers behind the study also say that eating more vegetables is somewhat more important than eating more fruit. Fresh vegetables reduced overall premature death risks by 16 percent. Fresh fruit reduced this risk by 4 percent. “Vegetables have a larger effect than fruit, but fruit still makes a real difference. If you’re happy to snack on carrots or other vegetables, then that is a great choice but if you fancy something sweeter, a banana or any fruit will also do you good,” Oyebode added. It is important to note that the study found that canned fruit actually appeared to increase the risk of death by 17 percent, more than likely due to the high levels of sugar typically found in many varieties of canned fruit. 5 Ways To Get In More Fruits & Vegetables Every Day Drink fruit (and veggie) smoothies for breakfast. When you’re making that morning smoothie, throw in a few extra

pieces of fruit…and a handful of kale or spinach as well. The sweet and fruity taste will actually mask the flavor of the vegetables. Eat more soup for lunch. Water-based soups are a great and filling way to incorporate more vegetables in your diet. Eat a salad with dinner. Not only will you fill up on healthy vegetables, but eating a salad before your main course will help prevent you from overeating anything that comes afterwards. Change up your greens. Instead of light green veggies, such as iceberg lettuce, switch things up and build your salads with kale and spinach, which pack more of a nutritional punch. Eat dessert. Enjoy a cup of berries, or another favorite fruit, drizzled with dark chocolate sauce. Elev8

ways women can live forever (almost) Breasts. Many physicians and medical practitioners still encourage their patients to perform them. The best time to check is after each monthly period. If you don’t check faithfully, at least have a physician check at your annual exam. That same task force suggests that the first mammogram should wait until age 50, but discuss your particular case with your doctor. If you have risk factors such as strong family history of breast cancer, the first mammogram could be indicated as early as your 30s. Heart. At least once a year, have your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checked for the three main risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, also called hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. If you already have one of those three conditions, keep your regular appointments and follow your doctor’s treatment plan. If you disagree, discuss it; don’t suddenly stop or start taking medication without guidance. Depending on your age or risk factors, your doctor may schedule a “stress test” to look for any major heart blockages or existing damage. Get More Sleep Being a woman (especially a mom) and not getting enough sleep often go hand-in-hand. However, insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. How you feel and perform during the day is related to how much sleep you get. Here are a few simple ways to get more sleep: •Stick to a sleep schedule: Go to bed and get up as close to the same times as possible each day. •Keep your room dark and don’t bring electronic gadgets to bed or keep a TV in the bedroom: The light from screens has been associated with insomnia and poor sleep. Prioritize sleep: If you have to leave some chores undone until the next day, then that’s okay. In fact, you may get them done faster after getting proper rest. Watch That Stress Stress can be beneficial by helping you develop skills to cope with and adapt to new and potentially threatening situations throughout life. However, the beneficial aspects diminish when the stress is severe enough to overwhelm your ability to take care of yourself and your family. How can you reduce your stress? Take time to relax, meditate, do yoga, practice deep breathing, ask for help when you feel overwhelmed, and/or talk about your problems with someone you trust. Don’t Ignore How You Feel Many women experience depression. Also, depression can mimic the symptoms of other conditions, such as stress, fatigue, exhaustion, or even pain. It is important to tell someone, particularly a doctor, about your concerns. Don’t ignore them. If you are thinking about harming yourself or know someone who is, tell someone who can help immediately. Also, be sure to reach out to loved ones so that they can help support you. Stretch Take some time throughout your day to give your body a nice stretch. Extend your arms up to the sky or towards the ceiling. Reach down and touch your toes. Angle your neck to one side, then the other. Feel your muscles relax and your mind calm a bit as you do. In addition, consider taking a yoga class. The benefits of starting your own practice not only include stress-relief, but improved flexibility and muscle tone, and an overall sense of well-being. Reward Yourself You’re a wonderful person and you deserve to be happy. Try to find a way to reward yourself every day for all the amazing things you do. It doesn’t have to be anything epic, necessarily: treat yourself to a pedicure, make time to watch that new movie you were meaning to, or buy yourself something new. As you begin to treat yourself more like the great person you are, you’ll be in a better mood, feel more confident, and will find it easier and easier to take better and better care of yourself. You’ll also become an even greater superhero than you already are! Elev8

The Coast2CoastRx program has been launched in several additional counties since and more counties continue to launch each month. “As of March 2014, Coast2Coast Discount Prescription program has saved the state of Georgia and its counties over $4.5 million since we initiated our partnership in February 2012,” said ACCG Executive Director Ross King. “Providing cost-effective county programs to citizens is a significant goal for Georgia’s county officials. The ACCG partnership with Coast2Coast has allowed our organization to assist them in meeting that specified goal.” ACCG has endorsed the Coast2CoastRx program and encourages all Georgia counties to participate. The Coast2Coast Rx card allows all Georgia residents, regardless of income, age, or health status to participate in

the program and save on the cost of their medications. The program has saved cardholders throughout the nation an average of 60 percent in 2013 on the cost of prescription drugs. The Rx card is distributed free of charge and may be used at all pharmacy chains and most independent pharmacies in Georgia and includes over 60,000 drugs in its formulary. The Coast2CoastRx card is available to residents for print here. The Coast2Coast Rx card is also available at county offices and local libraries in the following counties: Augusta-Richmond, Barrow, Banks, Ben Hill, Charlton, Chatham, Cherokee, Cobb, Effingham, Forsyth, Greene, Habersham, Heard, Jackson, Jones, Liberty, Lumpkin, Oconee, Peach, and Turner, Union, and White.

The Unseen Dangers of Pool Water

Pools and summertime are the best of friends. But experts are stressing the importance of controlling a potentially dangerous health risk – drinking the pool water. It’s very common for people, especially children, to get water in their mouths. Although swallowing a small amount of pool water has been deemed harmless by doctors, it’s important to realize that ingesting too much can lead to very dangerous situations. Chlorine poisoning. Otherwise known as recreational water illness, chlorine poisoning occurs when someone swallows or breathes in (inhales) chlorine. Secondary drowning. A condition where water is inhaled into their lungs. Bacterial/parasite infection. Chlorine is used to help get rid of bacteria such as E. coli and parasites, but it may not eliminate all of them. The Warning Signs of A Pool Problem Here are some pool-related symptoms to be aware of. If you recognize any of these warning signs within 72 hours of swimming, seek immediate medical attention. • Upset stomach and vomiting • Persistent cough • Trouble breathing • Fatigue As the hours pass, recreational water illness, chlorine poisoning and secondary drowning become more distinct conditions with more specific and severe symptoms, according to experts. Recreational water illness and chlorine poisoning may lead to digestive distress, such as abdominal cramping and diarrhea.

These conditions may seem like a bad case of food poisoning or stomach flu. Chlorine poisoning may also cause symptoms in the nervous and respiratory systems. Vision trouble, as well as swelling and burning may also develop in their eyes, throat, nose and ears. Secondary drowning has a greater effect on the respiratory system. Symptoms may include trouble breathing and heavy, wet-sounding, persistent coughs, and uncontrollable shivering, as well as hot and cold flashes. Prevention Tips for Children In additional to warning your children about the dangers of drinking pool water, here are some secondary steps to take: • Once a child is finished swimming, check for redness and irritation around the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. This could be a sign that chlorine levels were too high. • Listen for a nagging cough. If a child who has been swimming develops a cough that does not go away, it could be a sign that the child swallowed too much water or inhaled it. Be on alert for flu-like symptoms. If a child develops symptoms of the flu or food poisoning after swimming, seek immediate medical attention. Elev8

B.A.P.S. Appears to Fit the Reality Show Mold, But Different

July 31 - Aug. 6, 2014

AtlAntA DAily WorlD

By Diane Larche’

Welcome to St. Louis, population 319,294. And welcome to the world of Gina, Kristen, Anisha, Jason, Riccarda and Brandon. Key cast members of B.A.P.S. (Black African Princesses and Princes) engage in hair pulling, cursing, and even the lowest of the low — a spitting — in its debut as the new reality show on Lifetime TV. The show which Lifetime calls a “docu-series” about the privileged African American community in St. Louis which airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. BUT, the well- educated, well-coiffed and well-heeled St. Louis bred clan swear that in spite of the name calling and hate-filled exchanges, it’s really not who they are, and as the season progresses the ‘real’ people will emerge. The hour long reality show takes us into the neighborhoods and homes of the elite of St. Louis as daughters and sons of the well-to-do struggle with relationship issues from single parenthood, divorce and all the drudgery of day-to-day life. But on the flip side you also see the swanky galas, symphony, and social gatherings of the crème de la crème of St. Louis society. With all the glitz and the glamour of full length mink coats, diamond necklaces and bracelets, high end vehicles — the uppercrust in this community have no tolerance for the working class. Like their parents before them, the “friends” are born into their BAPS roles and anyone who doesn’t have the educational and financial status that they have become accustomed to, doesn’t fit the mold and should not interact with a BAPS. “Everything about you has got to be

8

refined,” says Anisha, a Louisiana born graduate of an “elite” private all girl high school and the University of Missouri. She is divorced and a single mother. “We are not like our urban counterparts by any stretch of the imagination. We were raised in the suburbs.” Much of her story involves a major rift with her former long-time friend Kristen. “They look down on me and judge me. They do what white people do to us,” laments Anisha’s boyfriend Kendrick who owns a small storefront and doesn’t have the pedigree Anisha’s family does. Then there is Gina, a Howard University educated woman who says she has a whole lot of education but lacks two important things in life. “I have an MBA, MA and a BBA. I have the whole alphabet behind me except Mrs. and Mommy. I like those two.” Lifetime screened the show at the Essence Fest in New Orleans with cast members on hand to give their take on the new kids on the block. However, as one from the East coast who has spent little time in The Lou, the show adds a refreshing aspect in the scenery as the cast members navigate the streets of this Midwest town. Seeing some of the historical sites and communities of St. Louis is a positive aspect of the show; the Powell Symphony Hall,, Lambert International Airport and the legendary St. Louis Arch. Six episodes have been completed and Lifetime is hoping it will catch on and become one of the major players in Reality TV.

Spelman College President Beverly Daniel Tatum Talks ‘Privilege’ in Higher Education By Rahel Gebreyes Spelman College President Beverly Daniel Tatum recently announced she would be stepping down from her position after more than 12 years of leading the historically black, all-female college. But before she passes on the torch, she stopped by HuffPost Live to discuss her legacy with the institution. Tatum weighed in on how “privilege” affects higher education and recalled a particular conversation with a professor who lamented that white students “lost out on the opportunity” to go to school alongside bright, young black students. “The concept of privilege is really important,” says Tatum. “I was speaking to a white educator who said, ‘I love visiting Spelman and I can see why young women of African descent want to be here, but I think it’s unfortunate that white institutions don’t have access to these students.’” While Tatum understood what the professor was articulating, she pointed out why such a statement was problematic. “I understood what he was trying to say, but I also heard in that question a lot of privilege because the understanding was … white kids are losing out because these students are here,” she said. “And I thought,

Spelman College President Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum when that parent struggles to write the check to Spelman, they’re not thinking about what the benefit is for white people. They’re thinking about what’s going to be best [and] most empowering for my young woman.” As Tatum suggested, the professor’s own privilege may have overshadowed his understanding of the complex issues at hand and could reflect some of the deeply-seeded problems within race and education.

CBCF’s Students Complete Congressional Intern Program

Our Lifestyles. Our Opinions. Our News.

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated recently honored the 41 students who participated in the 2014 Summer Congressional Intern Program. The summer internship program concluded on July 25 for college students — several of whom are from the Atlanta area — on a quest to develop themselves as leaders and learn about careers in public service. Selected students participated in a nineweek summer program that began in May to gain hands-on experience navigating the legislative process and working on public policy. The interns worked in Congressional Black Caucus member offices and participated in professional development events, including a mock congressional session, leadership forums and speed networking with corporate and business leaders. “This was an invaluable opportunity for our summer interns,” said A. Shuanise Washington, president and chief executive officer, CBCF. “Through the Congressional Intern

Program, interns gained the tools they need to become leaders and public servants, while getting an up close and personal perspective on how legislators lead, develop and implement policies that affect all of us.” CBCF internship programs are described as one of the top public policy training experiences in Washington, D.C. They are part of the CBCF Leadership Institute for Public Service, which offers fellowships, internships and scholarships to equip the next generation of leaders for careers in public service. Since its inception, more than 1,300 students have participated in the foundation’s internships. “CBCF is committed to developing the next generation of leaders. The Congressional Intern Program gives our students the chance to create, plan and organize community service and leadership projects — skills that enable them to grow professionally and personally,” concluded Washington.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT MEANS LIFETIME SURVIVAL

It’s almost August. Do you know if your children are learning? A couple of months ago they were eager to leave the regimentation of the daily classroom to “enjoy the summer.” In a matter of weeks, many will prepare to return to school. Will they return ready to hit the ground running in the fall? Or will they struggle to catch up because their summer activities were not stimulating enough to prevent learning losses. Student’s score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than at the beginning of the summer, according to the National Summer Learning Association. That organization makes a strong case that young people must be engaged in summer learning and enrichment opportunities, because they lose as much as two months of math learning, and more than two months of reading proficiency without summer engagement. Of course, lower income students experience more losses, while middle-class students may gain proficiency during the summer. The National Summer Learning Association says that at least half of the achievement gap between lower and higher income young people is a function of unequal access to summer learning opportunities. Some youngsters don’t have summer opportunities because they don’t know about them, others because they can’t afford them, and still others because they are needed at home. Some teens are tasked with taking care of younger siblings, though they might be better served in enrichment programs that would prepare them for the next school year. Others must choose between work and summer enrichment programs, and when money matters, work wins over enrichment. And while subsidized summer enrichment programs are available, some students are unable to participate when even modest fees are required. I’ve not spoken of race, only income, in examining the importance of summer enrichment programs. But because African American students are more likely to be low-income than others, we know that race matters here. We also know that space makes a difference as well. There will be a greater variety of summer enrichment programs in affluent neighborhoods, as opposed to other neighborhoods. And while programs in affluent neighborhoods may offer scholarships for those who need assistance, transportation may become a barrier. Whether excuses or explanations, the achievement gap speaks to differential outcomes. While summer enrichment opportunities are differentially available, with black and brown young people less likely to have access to opportunities than others, some organizations are doing the work to ensure that young people are intellectually engaged during the summer, enabling them to return to school ready to do their best work. Dr. Marian

Wright Edelman, founder and leading light of the Children’s Defense Fund has developed a Freedom School program that teaches young people civil rights history along with basic skills. Organizations can purchase the curriculum and send staff for training in teaching it. Thousands of young people are being positively impacted by Freedom Schools. Lots of local programs have developed programs that have elements similar to those at the CDF Freedom Schools. A week or so ago, I began my morning with the young people at Washington DC’s Southeast Tennis and Learning Center for their “Read Aloud” program. At about 8:30 in the morning, the youngsters, whose ages range from 6 to 15, gather in a circle to hear a book read to them, and to engage in an energetic and affirming ritual. I love the read aloud program because I love looking into the eyes of these young people, to imagine the leaders they will become. I read Faith Ringgold’s Aunt Harriett’s Underground Railroad in the Sky as selected students acted out the words, joined me in song, and applauded each other as the story came to an end. Flashback to preadolescence – the students who played the parts of Cassie and Bebe, a sister and brother separated moving along the railroad were supposed to hug when reunited. While the young man was “up” for the hug, the young woman looked like she wanted to run in another direction. The Read Aloud program ends with a rousing group rendition of Labi Siffre’s Something Inside, complete with choreographed hand gestures and motions. Every morning, these fifty or so young’uns are affirming themselves through song. The adults that participate in the Read Aloud program are politicians and business leaders, artists and educators. If they are anything like me, they leave uplifted by the children and their promise of resilience. I’m encouraging those who can to help with a summer enrichment program. Spend a day, a few afternoons, and maybe more time to help provide a summer experience. Funding helps provide great summer opportunities for our youth, and informal programs with a couple of retired teachers and a church basement can go a long way, as well. We cannot afford is to widen the achievement gap by leaving too many of our young people unengaged this summer.

SHOULD BLACK AMERICANS BE LIBERALS?

The concept is one of the many deceptions that have been perpetuated against blacks and other minority groups for some time. To equate homosexuality with race is absurd; yet more and more blacks have fallen for this. Although the Democratic Party was the party that started the KKK and the Republican Party the party of Lincoln and the Party of Sojourner Truth, Carter G Woodson, and Mary McLeod Bethune to name a few; yet if you are black and a conservative you are considered “not black enough” or a “sellout”. The narrative is clear, black America is being merchandised by the liberals. A few years ago, I was confronted with a very interesting question. I was doing an interview concerning my opposition to gay marriage. One of the callers, who if I had to guess is like myself, an African American, said to me “I am surprised that, as a black man, you are against same sex marriage”. It took me a couple of seconds to let this process; what exactly do you mean by this? Was my question to the caller; although he couldn’t articulate exactly what he meant, the implication was clear. What the caller was trying to suggest was that there is a connection between being black and being gay. This is one of the many deceptions that have been perpetuated against blacks and other minority groups for some time. To equate homosexuality with race is absurd; yet more and more blacks have fallen for this. Although the Democrat Party was the party that started the KKK and the Republican Party the party of Lincoln and the Party of Sojourner Truth, Carter G Woodson, and Mary McLeod Bethune to name a few; yet if you are black and a conservative you are considered “not black enough” or a “sellout”. The narrative is clear, black America is being merchandised by the liberals. Why do I say that? For many years liberals have taken the black community for granted. If you are black you are expected to be a democrat and to consistently vote for liberal causes. Even though the majority of blacks believe in God, they are for traditional marriage and are pro-life, they still overwhelmingly support the Democrat Party. In 2008 and in 2012, approximately 95% of African Americans voted for Barack Obama and the Democrat Party. Before moving forward I want to clarify; I am not, nor have I ever, been a Republican. This is not necessarily about political parties but about ideology. I use the labels of Democrats and Republicans because those are the two belief systems most clearly defined by the two-party system in America. The ideology that I am focusing on is the socially conservative belief system most associated with Christian beliefs; that being marriage between one man and one woman, pro-

life, and freedom of religion. Sadly enough, although most black people openly declare that they support these beliefs, their ideologies have become disconnected with their political affiliations. There is a shift happening; more and more people of color are waking up and coming out of the mental plantation of liberalism. They are recognizing that liberal causes are not only in opposition to what their deeply rooted morals and values dictate, but overwhelmingly we see the deep destruction that the liberal platforms of fatherlessness, godlessness, and entitlement programs being pushed by the liberals are literally destroying the black community. Black America has the highest incarceration rate, the highest rate of fatherlessness, and the lowest mortality rate of all racial groups in the US. Liberalism and godlessness has run its course for the people of color in the US! On August 16 in Hershey PA there is a movement starting. It is a movement to turn the nation back to conservative values. It is a call to stand for Biblical Marriage, for prolife and religious freedoms. It is a multi-cultural, multi-denominational, movement that is taking place in PA. It is a stand against governmental interference with the free exercise of religion. It is the start of a clarion call to restore America to the ideals that have made this the greatest country in the world. It is the united movement to restore America! We are asking Americans to become a part of the movement; if Americans love this country, and want America to continue to be the beacon of light to the nations, we are inviting them to come and be a part of this awesome movement of restoration and hope. We are asking Americans to get involved in the Unite To Restore America movement. Pastor Green is the Pastor and co-founder of Antioch Assembly in Harrisburg, Pa. and is the founder of the Josiah Project for troubled teens. He is the author of: From Kilos to the Kingdom; The church That Will Turn the World Upside Down,” and Standing on the Rock.
