FROM THE EDITORS The Pulse is finally back! As the official publication of the Ateneo Electronics and Computer Engineering Society, we’re here to give you the lowdown of what goes around in this circuit board of an organization. From a bunch of ECCE guys playing basketball in the cov courts, AECES has grown into to a fully fledged organization that tries to imbibe what it truly means to be engineering the future. In this issue of The Pulse, we aim to start capturing AECES’ best memories, with articles on last semester’s triumphs, bonding moments, and even a glimpse of one of AECES’ kilig couples! Flip through its pages, and take a stroll down memory lane with us. Whether you’re a senior who would shake your head at the sabog moments, or a freshman who’d be appalled by your haircut during the ECCE OrSem, we hope you’d enjoy what The Pulse has in store for you. Enjoy reading! - Faustine Beloso, Editor In Chief, The Pulse

Editor In Chief Faustine Beloso, III BS ECE

Hi, AECES member! It’s this time of the year again when we go back from the good ol’ routines of sleepless nights, cramming papers, and studying for that ELC exam. Welcome to the 2nd semester! As we start this new chapter in the history of AECES, I am proud to present

Monstroeccety: The ECCE OrSem It’s that time of year again! Welcoming the ECCE freshmen to their new home, in the Ateneo and with AECES!

Taking on the theme of the Monsters University movie, this year’s ECCE OrSem entitled Wire Up 2013: MonstroECCEty was a whole day event held last June 15, 2013 at various locations around Ateneo. The first leg of the OrSem, held at MVP Roofdeck, began at 9am where speakers from the different departments were invited to share tips with the freshmen for having a successful stay in the Ateneo. The first speaker was Dr. Angie Guzon from the Math Department. She was able to

by Paul Alcantara and AJ Rivera

give freshmen wise tips on how to successfully get through their entire Math subjects, especially how to study for an exam. After the 30-minute talk, the freshmen were given the opportunity to ask questions to Dr. Guzon.

he iLead program was the Ateneo Electronics and Computer Engineering Society’s (AECES) flagship leadership training program for this semester, It was held last July 27 and was divided into two sessions: morning session held at Sec C 201A and afternoon session held at Bel 312. The sessions were presided by keynote speakers Mr. Domingo Nacion, project

consultant at Alay ni Ignacio, for the morning session and Mr. Francis Uy, CEO of Sinag Solutions, for the afternoon session. Registration began around 7:30 in the morning which lasted for more than an hour and the program officially started at around 8:45 am. Domingo Nacion’s talk, entitled “21 Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell,” discussed

the various “laws” which characterizes a leader. Opening the talk with several videos, Nacion immediately piqued the audiences’ interest by combining humor and wit with effective themes and messages. He then expounded on the 21 laws by going through each one of them as presented in Maxwell’s book. Out of the 21 mentioned, one of the more striking ones was the Law of Respect which basically suggested

These laws form what a leader truly is. Nacion ended his talk with the quote by John Maxwell: “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” In the Question and Answer forum, attendees asked about topics ranging from extroversion, qualification, and balance. Nacion gave two perspectives generally, one of the textbook response based of Maxwell’s ideology, and one about his own personal opinion. After the forum, HR head Angelie Lacsina presented Nacion with a token and certificate of appreciation for his time and effort in making the session. The morning was not over however, after the talk. Host and Programs Head Kevin Barros facilitated the group dynamic Stack ‘Em Up. Attendees were all required to wear blindfolds. The game required participants to form that although the barometer for respect varies from person to person, a leader must garner these respect in order for them to follow him. People follow others whom they respect. Other examples were the Laws of Intuition, Magnetism, Connection, and Legacy. Intuition pointed to the decision making ability of the leader. Nacion mentioned that this trait is frequently tested in collegiate levels, where “snap tasks” such as 5-minute presentations during class demand swift judgment and quick creativity. Magnetism meanwhile was about the tendency for peo-

The afternoon session, headed by Kevin Barros, was conducted at Bel 312. Participants did not start arriving until 1:45pm. This pushed the event to a late opening. Mr. Francis Uy expressed his disappointment on how the event was not able to start on the scheduled time. Company Tour: ABS-CBN Aeces goes on a journey to the studios of Channel 2! by Angela Carmela Aguilera

uly 31 - The organizers and participants met at McDonald’s Katipunan at around 8am. The participants rode taxis of 5 people each, one of each team was guided by a core team member and other officers who were also participants that day. The participants

arrived in ABS-CBN before 10:00 am and went to the Studio Tours Office immediately. At 10:10 am, the crew showed the participants a video of ABS-CBN’s background for its 60 years anniversary of service to the Filipino nation and the programs it has offered since then. Afterwards, the studio tour started. First, the group passed by the Umagang Kay Ganda halls but unfortunately the group was not allowed to enter. Then, we went to Studio 4 where programs such as ASAP XV, Gandang Gabi Vice, Rated K and the sitcom Toda Max are taped. The crew explained that there were two types of stages in the building, one is permanent and the other is temporary. One example of a permanent one is the stage for ASAP XV which runs every Sunday since decades ago. The other programs were temporary set at the other side of the studio and takes 42 hours to assemble and another 42 hours to disassemble. The crew also talked about their wide-angle cameras which makes the stage look big in the television and amazingly, one trivia is that artists gain almost 5 kilograms in the television upon using these cameras. He also talked about the sound proofing in the studio which is essential to the program and the other programs held in the neighboring studios. For each of the studios which were visited, the group was given a few minutes to take pictures around the studio. Puzzle Me This #1: Basketball!

Resistorman, and his friends Cappy and Transistorman have just finished playing 3-on-3 basketball with some other guys (Resistorman’s best bud Oscillo stayed to keep score). Each of the three played different positions (as guard, forward or center) in that game. After the game, the three friends decided to sprint to the nearest water fountain to relieve their thirst. So this is what happened: 1. There is one friend finishing between the guard and the forward. 2. The first one to arrive to the fountain was the guard. 3. Cappy arrived ahead of Resistorman. 4. Transistorman and the forward finished right next to each other. Who came in first to the water fountain?
