Safe Disposal of Wastewater – A Crucial Step Towards Happy Environment Treatment and safe disposal of wastewater is done by packaged sewage treatment plant to contribute to the environment. Sewage treatment facilitate protection of environment and environmental conservation since the wastewater collected throughout the towns and cities must be returned to receiving land or to water body. Once the organic matter, pathogens, and other concentrations of solids are removed to attain the set standards, the treated water is then released into water or land to sustain the environment.

The job of the design engineer is to intend the process that ensures the technical feasibility of the treatment process, considering other factors like construction and maintenance costs, the availability of the equipment and construction materials, and experienced labor. Most of the sewage treatment plants use aerobic metabolism to remove the organic matter. The widely used aerobic processes are the activated sludge process, trickling filter, oxidation ditch, and aerated lagoons. Stabilization ponds apply both aerobic and anaerobic mechanisms.

The wastewater after treatment is finally disposed on to land or into the water body. Usually the treatment involves removal of organic matter and SS matter either in suspended or soluble form. The sewage treatment plant can be intended for 100% removal of this pollutant, however the treatment then become expensive. Moreover, the existing watercourses can assimilate specific amount of pollution load without affecting the environment severely. Thus, large amount of pollutants are expelled in treatment plants and the remaining treatment is left with natural purification process. This is why before coming to the design of the treatment plant, engineers first determine 

The characteristics of the raw wastewater and The required degree of treatment

The characteristics of the wastewater vary from sector to sector and from location to location. The treatment methods are classified into three partsPhysical unit operations Chemical unit processes Biological unit processes Physical unit operations – These methods are based on physical forces, for instance, screening, mixing, sedimentation, flotation, filtration, flocculation, etc.   

Chemical unit processes – these methods include removal or conversion of contaminant by addition of chemicals or by other chemical reaction, for instance gas transfer, adsorption, disinfection, etc. Biological unit processes – these methods include removal of contaminants using biological activity. Treatment of wastewater is crucial and must for industries to prevent pollution in water and land. This is why majority of industries have installed packaged sewage treatment plant at their facility to treat sewage before releasing to the land or water.
