Pamela Durante Interior designer

“If you can imagine it, it can be done in marble”.

Magazine. ‘el mármol’.- What is the design for you? Does Natural Stone have a place in it? Pamela Durante.- Design for me is creating unique spaces with great details, the use of symmetry, looking at the negative and positive space that forms and incorporating color and texture. Yes, I love natural stone and incorporate it whenever possible. It is classical and timeless. M. ‘el mármol’.- What are your favorite projects that you've completed in your career and why? P.D.- In the beginning of my career I started out in the hospitality industry and worked on many luxury hotels

4

in New York City. I worked for Ian Schrager for quite a few years and Philippe Stark, Andre Putman were involved in those projects. It was a wonderful experience and I learned so much. I later went on to start my own company Atelier Durante Interior Design and was working with a group that was focused on the Restaurant industry. I did several restaurants with that group and one of them received a “10” rating for design in Zagats. M. ‘el mármol’.– As a designer, what you do you ‘ask’ to a product to be used in a project? P.D.- I like to find and specify things that have elegance, sophistication and performance. M. ‘el mármol’.– And, in terms of

Certified Interior Design in the state of New York, she is a Professional member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), IIDA (International Association of Interior Designers) and The Decorators Club as well as a faculty member at The New York School of Interior Design. She was past President of ASID NY Metro Chapter, of IDLNY and has served on various other design boards in New York city. Pamela Durante, with an extensive background in hospitality, restaurant, and high end residential interior design, has been the ambassador of the ‘Macael Brand’ in USA and, after passing through the Spanish Marble Region in Almería and its commercial work in the city of the skyscrapers, tells us his vision to continue advancing in the internationalization. service, what do you expect from the company that supplies it? P.D.– I expect a company to take responsibility for their product, respond promptly to my questions and concerns, and that can deliver in a timely manner and meet the commitment that is set forth at the beginning of a project. M. ‘el mármol’.–What are some of the trends that you see in the field of the interior design and architecture in USA, related with Natural Stone? Colors, textures… P.D.- Currently there is a craving and madness for white marble and particularly huge slabs of it. Texture is being used but mostly in a commercial setting where places are redesigned almost every 5 years. It is risky to put textured stone in a

residential setting as it may date the project a few years down the road. Working on commercial projects affords you the ability to be more creative and to step out of the box and try different things. I do like the sandblasted stone particularly on the Macael white marble as all the properties of the stone including the beautiful crystals are more readily seen that way. el mármol #34

1 M. ‘el mármol’.– After your role as Macael Brand’s Ambassador in NYC, what do you think it would be the ideal target for Macael Marble in US and how our companies should reach it? P.D.– I feel that it is imperative to have product in the United States and of course the New York Metropolitan area. Designers need to see the slabs that they want to use on a project and will not want to rely on a computer screen for the selection. I feel the companies need to target stone companies and have a supply of goods that can be seen in a marble yard. I also strongly recommend that they reach out to large fabrication

6

companies such as Port Morris, large developers such as the Related Company and General Contractors as well. Designers and architects may specify the product but, in large commercial jobs it is the General Contractors who most often are sourcing out the material that they are familiar with and will present as a substitute. M. ‘el mármol’.– Which is, from your point of view and experience with our product in the USA, the best way to do networking with this target? P.D.– Reach out to the correct people. Network with developers, join design some of their organizations as well as Interior Design organizations such as ASID, and IIDA and become Industry partners, NEWH is another great organization. You can also develop a CEU (Continuing Education Unit) and offer lunch and learns to large companies to get your product into their design library. M. ‘el mármol’.– The Macael’s companies are doing a great effort to commercialize its products

“Everyone was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their product and workmanship”. internationally, what would you recommend them to improve its commercial success? P.D.– Every company that has great success has a huge marketing group and an abundance of advertising dollars behind them. You must saturate the market continuously to move forward quickly. Social media is also a great way to get known but there are other ways as well. I recently attended a seminar on marketing your company and learned that email marketing has a better success rate then social media. It is something that needs to happen very often and needs to be Simple and Visual! Start with a “call to action” and, provide snackable content that shows a level of expertise. Your subject line is KEY! M. ‘el mármol’.– How has contributed to you working with Macael Brand? P..D.– Working with AEMA and the Macael Marble Brand has been a

truly wonderful and enriching experience. The people are incredible and warm. The hospitality, generosity and kindness that I received was second to none. Everyone was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their product and workmanship. This was a place where the prime industry is marble and these quarries have been passed down through the families for centuries. They are born knowing about marble! A sense of pride, confidence and expertise exists throughout the industry. What I saw that could be fabricated was astonishing and the creativity was endless. If one could imagine it, it could be made of marble. It opened up a whole new world for me and I still have so much more to learn. Visiting the quarries and seeing the vast amount of white Macael marble yet to be unearthed was amazing. Also knowing that this is the same marble found at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, solidifies the roots and historical connection that is associated with Macael marble. Finally, I do not think I have ever seen a brighter sun or a bluer sky anywhere else that I have visited. el mármol #34

Antonio MuĂąoz, technical architect NATURAL STONE AND TECHNOLOGY

N

atural stone and technology go hand in hand since immemorial, time, when man begins to work it, with his first more rudimentary tools in the old quarries, considerably different to the last decades, where the development of technology in the sector, has revolutionized the way stone is worked. As a native of a nearby town, I can consider myself a great lucky to have as a neighbor the town of Macael, "the land of marble" and the great opportunity that involves

developing my knowledge, as a technical architect, with this noble material that we get from nature. The possibilities offered by natural stone can be infinite if we have the right tools and technologies; the limit, is marked by the people, like me, who work it. From the moment I started working in this sector, I can say that there has not been a day when I have not acquired some new knowledge, due to the different types of stone and the very different characteristics that exist

between them: from its composition, to color, through its hardness, absorption or textures, among others. If we put all this together with the possibilities offered by the technology currently developed to make the stone, we obtain a cocktail of hundreds of possible results to develop and personalize each work. When we make natural stone, relying on modern numerical control machines, together with computer-aided design software, we can develop any type of piece that we are capable of imagining.

About Antonio…. 

Technical architect, University of Granada.

Máster in Integral building safety, University of Seville.

Currently: Project Manager in Natural Stone, Arriaga Stone.

This is where architects and designers from all over the world present challenges that we must solve with the best solution. The game begins with a first design and the study of how to make it,

analyzing the different processes to which we would subject it. This is key to developing the project in the most efficient way possible with the tools available to us, in order to obtain, thus, a product of the

The study and development of projects in the technical office is necessary to achieve the best result once it has finished. Today, we have at our disposal very powerful computer-aided design software that allows us to make, from a simple washbasin to the most complex of the sculptures, going through the design and cutting of classic facades composed of molded cornices, jambs, columns or special pieces, among others. These tools also allow us el mármol #34

to make 'renders' of how a façade or a complete floor would be with the selected materials and the mosaics designed for it, obtaining an almost real result of what we would manufacture and how that combination of different colors, tones and movements of the characteristic veins of natural stone fit together. When the factory starts working in a new project, reducing production times by machining the largest number of processes, is key to decrease the manufacturing cost, reducing as much as possible the elaborated by hand. Working with CAD/CAM software, we prepare the different stone machining programs, which will then be loaded into numerical control machines (CNC) , whose advantage is the configuration and previous simulation of the work on the

of the work on the computer, previewing how the CNC will work and where we can correct machining faults, before the piece is processed. This combination of 'software' CAD / CAM together with the CNC machine allows us to work with millimeter precision. So when carrying out special works of great

importance, where the maximum size of the blocks is limited in its maximum size of extraction in the quarry and being less than the final product (such as columns of great height, sculptures or works, as the largest mortar in the world, which we made three years ago), we can divide them into several pieces or sections, like a puzzle, then fit them perfectly, achieving great

precision. The natural stone, extracted directly from nature and being, obviously, a material that respects the environment, must be treated with affection. On many occasions, people do not know the nobility of this material and the millions of years it takes to form itself. With its colors and its unique movements, we obtain from it unrepeatable pieces, that must be worked

In conclusion, we can say that the future of the stone is closely linked to technology and its advances, facilitating the processes of elaborated stone, reducing production times and improving the quality of life of workers. Will we end up seeing this sector completely robotized and automated? In the coming years we will know the answer. Finally, I wanted to say goodbye, thanking the Andalusian Marble Industry Association (AEMA –its initials in Spanish-) for their trust in me for the writing of this article and recognizing the work and daily effort of all my colleagues with whom we form a great team to develop all our projects in natural stone. el mårmol #34
