REFLECTIONS ON THE CHINESE DIASPORA IN ENGLAND By Y. Wang As a community, the history of the Chinese people’s arrival on English soil can be narrated in so many ways. Some recall its history tainted by Western racism, colonial oppression, and prejudice; others highlight their contribution to and sacrifices for the Commonwealth’s development; and fearful are those reactionaries who believe that they would erode and take away from ‘English culture’. 作为一个社会现象，中国人踏上英国土地的历史 可以从多方面来描写。有人把这段历史视为被 西方民族主义、殖民压迫和种族歧视所污染； 也有人看到了中国移民对英联邦的发展做出 的牺牲和贡献；而那些反对者者十分害怕， 他们担心“英国文化”将受到削弱， 甚至消失。

HERE IS A CHANCE TO BRING POSITIVE CHANGE INTO OUR SOCIETY, WHEREVER WE LIVE. TO CONNECT PEOPLES FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AGAINST INTOLERANCE AND DISRESPECT, REFLECT UPON OUR ORIGINS, REPRESENT THE MARGINALISED, ACKNOWLEDGE THE DIVERSITY OF DIFFERENT POLITICAL SYSTEMS AND CULTURAL VALUES, AND EMBRACE THE FRESH IDEAS THAT MULTICULTURALISM BRINGS.
For what it’s worth, what does it mean to be a Chinese citizen of England? In substance this could mean legitimate expectations to run for office, to be conferred all the legal rights any other English national should have, to be visible in the media, and to have recognition of our community’s importance and place in English society. Where are we today? Lord Wei’s 2012 speech called for greater participation in society and the global community from Chinese abroad and in England. The age of ideas bold and new is upon us, we who are the Chinese diaspora in England. Interactions are spanning continents through the use of social media and the internet. Here is a chance to bring positive change into our society, wherever we live. To connect peoples from different backgrounds
against
intolerance
and
disrespect,
reflect upon our origins, represent the marginalised, acknowledge the diversity of different political systems and cultural values, and embrace the fresh ideas that multiculturalism brings. Yet not enough Chinese in the United Kingdom vote. Not nearly enough are readily visible in the English media. Few enter politics and few seem keen to raise their voices in the fields of journalism, sociology and cultural discourse. Some say we do not belong. Some say it is not our country to change. Others say we cannot change anything — we are too small as a community in the UK to represent the rest. Yet we live in a world, both historically and currently, moved by migration and reformed by ideas from other lands. The history of the Chinese Empire has been defined by dynastic cycles, having even passed the ‘Mandate of Heaven’ to foreign rulers (the Yuan and Qing). England has lived through Roman rule and the Norman Conquest. Borders change. People move for reasons spanning a wide spectrum, be it for opportunity or necessity. Everyone clings onto whatever bargaining chip is left. By chance we are born and given consciousness in a society that we may or may not call our own. No one person is the same as another. Although we

share distinct similarities, given we are defined by our experiences — our communities, temporal sphere, and our ancestors’ legacies — holding onto one stagnating concept of culture is unrealistic. One can hardly say a Ming Chinese is the same as the ‘modern Chinese’.

Some say we do not belong. Some say it is not our country to change. Others say we cannot change anything — we are too small as a community in the UK to represent the rest. Yet we live in a world, both historically and currently, moved by migration and reformed by ideas from other lands.

A third generation Chinese diaspora is different from a recently landed immigrant from the Mainland. Cultures change and are recreated over the ages, and identities move apart and merge together. Tea (originating in China) has become part of British culture and Western thought created a basis for China’s May Fourth Movement. Instead of rejecting the ‘other’, we should embrace the subjectivity of identity and the underlying drive of cultural change: make our voices heard and do not let one narrative rule out others.

In England, on occasion, ignorance has reared its head, shaking in disapproval as others offer alternative suggestions. In extreme situations, words may be exchanged, but nowhere is dialogue heard. Change is ever constant — we cannot paralyse time and we cannot resist movement. We are constantly reinventing ourselves and our allegiances. The ‘Sea Turtle’ expat becomes a snobbish specialist of all things ‘English’, the diaspora abroad becomes the ‘voice of China alone’, and the exile is the ‘authoritative voice’ of a nation. Are there no other ways to view ourselves?

Gravity pulls in one direction for those with settled feet. But they will never fly. Beyond the clouds many dream of countering limits and assertions, learning and growing. The diaspora can be more than ‘little emperors’. This is our time to contribute to conversations spanning global proportions and slowly close the distance in space and time, between China and the World it has opened itself to.

There is no question about it: it’s up there with the other greats of this world (as far as ‘cities’ go): New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris… Everywhere you turn, from glass skyscrapers amid historic buildings, to witty advertisements and art on every corner, there is something impressive to see. Few cities could rival its wealth of culture — its theatre, its galleries, its museums, its bars. Indeed, in the words of Samuel Johnson, “You will find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. The first thing anyone should do in London is not to hit the shops (yet), but take a walk. That in my humble view is the only real way to experience one of the world’s great cities. I began mine at Southbank on the River Thames, near the London Eye (which to be honest, isn’t worth the high admission fee and long queues unless you go with a big group of friends and a bottle of champagne). However, the Eye does make a great background for photos. More interesting and authentically ‘London’ is what goes on around it — the theatrical stunts! If, like me, you walk past the Eye along the river to cross Westminster Bridge, you’ll pass by a brass-painted statue man who suddenly comes to life, a standup comedian and most hilarious of all, a man dressed as a cat in a box (with sound effects). When you cross the bridge you’ll be hit by the smell of roasted caramelised peanuts being sold to hungry Londoners, a sign of the city’s new population from the Middle East. Across the river, you’ll find Embankment, which sells delicious Cornish cream Mr. Whippy’s with flakes (an English classic which, in my case, did not last long!). Continue along past the Houses of Parliament and in about twenty minutes, you’ll reach the skeletal Millennium Bridge, with the iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral behind. I decided to stop by the Tate Modern for a dose of controversial contemporary art, with artists such as Damien Hurst on display.

The exhibition finishes August 12. Hit the shops. From Burberry to Top Shop and everything in between, you can’t miss out on a spree in KNIGHTSBRIDGE — there’s something there for every budget and desire. And for the ultimate department store on a rainy day, there’s nowhere like SELFRIDGES (OXFORD STREET). But arguably the most fun you’ll have is wandering through CAMDEN MARKET, where you’ll find incredible leather jackets and handicrafts at more affordable prices… Party like it’s 1999 (literally — with all the best nineties and noughties music classics) at The Book Club in SHOREDITCH, a once grungy but now gentrified neighbourhood in London’s East End. Try the bartender’s raspberry-muddled drink of choice, Don’t Go To Dalston. pre-drink around the corner in HOXTON SQUARE where you’ll find a dizzying array of cool little bars. Cambridge is a town surrounded by aquatic delights. You’d be a sorry visitor indeed to miss out on its main attraction: punting! It’s especially enjoyable to experience this with a guide who can not only tell you a thing or two about the historical colleges along the way (with a good dose of British banter), as well as teach you how to stand up and steer with a long and heavy oar. Begin the adventure down at the Avery, an authentic old pub by the side of the river where boats are rented out, and grab a cold beer or apple cider for the ride. Wander along the bridge to King’s College where Chinese poet, Xu Zhimou wrote his immortal poem, Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again. Born 1897 in Haining, Zhejiang, Xu attended Hangzhou High school and in 1915 went to Peking University. An early adventurer, he then travelled to Columbia University in New York to study politics but found the States “intolerable” and moved to England. There he fell in love with the romantic poetry of Keats and Shelley and began the modern Chinese poetry movement. Besides seeing Cambridge by boat or by foot, there’s plenty of opportunities to cycle. Make like a student and hire a bike — you’ll find endless flat roads and paths to cycle along and few cars or rude drivers, making Cambridge a particularly lovely place to pass through on two wheels.

If it’s sunny, head to the weekend market in the village square for a wonderful home-made beef burger or ostrich sausage hotdog — expect to find great mounds of glorious cheese and endless cartons of fresh summer strawberries, too (perfect for a riverside picnic). It’s also well worth a long walk down to The Orchard, the teahouse once patronised by Virginia Woolf and John Maynard Keynes. The walk winds along a small country path, through open meadows, fields of green and quiet forests. It takes two hours to walk and 45 minutes or so to cycle before you reach the pub. But the cold pitchers of fresh lemonade and classic scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream make it an especially rewarding adventure and a truly memorable experience. If the English weather rains on your picnic plans, you can still enjoy a very reasonable meal at Jamie’s Italian, opened by England’s iconic ‘Naked Chef’, Jamie Oliver. His Italian chain fund the Fifteen Project, which takes troubled or struggling teens in from poorer neighbourhoods and teaches them how to cook. The seafood tomato spaghetti is always sensationally slurpy and rich, though we also found the squid ink risotto crispy and delicious. We shared a bowl of Sicilian, green olives chilled on ice, making for an unexpectedly refreshing side.

Take a southerly excursion to Britain’s swinging, seaside town where almost anything goes... This is the place where Thai ‘ladyboys’ perform in the park every year, where you can buy suede shoes in every colour of the rainbow and where multiple cake shops craft sweet treats in the shape of certain parts of the anatomy. Welcome to Britain’s gay (and design) capital. The town’s fun-loving and somewhat outrageous culture dates back to 1780, when the Prince Regent (later King George IV) whisked his mistress away from London to the sunny seaside. There, he ordered a Royal Pavilion and ‘Pleasure Palace’ be built for her. Inspired by Western ideas of what the ‘Far East’ might look like, the building was intended to be an Oriental fantasyland, with Indian spires in vibrant shades. These whimsical landmarks came to define the rest of the town’s colourful architecture and permissive outlook. The first thing you should do is take a walk along the spectacular coastline and breathe in the fresh sea air, which earned the seaside town its ‘health retreat’ reputation several hundred years ago. A word of warning: Brighton beach has a nudist area, so you might get some interesting views along your stroll… Head for Brighton’s famous West Pier, where you can be a kid again amid carousels and candy floss of this timeless Victorian funfair. If you have more time for your stroll, enjoy a unique art experience at Fabrik Gallery, where you can embark upon a unique ‘Sounds of the Sea’ narrated walk until July. The art walk takes two hours and is narrated through your headphones. Brighton is typically sunnier than other parts of the country, but in the event that the weather is quintessentially English (i.e., lousy), take this as an opportunity to explore Brighton’s significant other — The Lanes. You can easily get lost for hours, taking in the individual charm of each tiny shop. Instead of the usual British high street chains, you’ll find unique boutique designer and fabric shops, given that Brighton is a fashion design hub… Get crafty at the Beads Unlimited store on Sydney Street, where you can buy beads in every colour and make your own jewellery. However, one might find that Chinese have won most medals in minority sports, such as gymnastics, diving and ping pong. Some think that the physical quality of Asian people mean they are not good at competitive sports. But how do we explain, for example, the impressive performances of Korea and Japan in football? On the other hand, the ‘professionalisation’ of sports in China has, to some extent, influenced its pursuit of Olympic medals. And although popularised sport in the West has improved athletes’ physical ability, it makes sports a business first. So should sport be a lifelong career, or a hobby?’

Yang Shu’an, Vice-Minister of the General Administration of Sport, recently said that Chinese athletes are ‘the happiest athletes in the world,’ but an estimated 45% of the retired athletes are jobless. Take Zou Chunlan, a national weightlifting champion, who became a cleaner after retiring from sports. Or Ai Dongmei, a marathon champion who became disabled, and sold her gold medals after retiring. Only a lucky few Chinese sportsmen and women can make the successful transition into life as a retired athlete, perhaps becoming sports coaches, government officers or a happy family man/woman. Pursuing glory for our country in the eyes of the world is a wonderful thing that no one can deny. But athletes must consider their next steps after they retire while our social security system is still developing. Whilst of course parents and coaches will play an active role in this process, by the time a standard of training and performance is reached where becoming a professional is no longer a pipe-dream, the chief drive comes from the athletes themselves.

‘As a 7-year-old I moved from China to Australia with my parents. Looking back, I can faintly recall my childhood at the local Nanjing school, where we would all congregate at the concrete playground every morning to do our aerobics... To me, it feels like sport and other physical endeavours in China are a highly coordinated affair. This is especially true for professional athletes, where promising youngsters are ushered into gruelling elite sports schools to fulfil their potential. I really admire Chinese Olympians for their dedication, but I feel sorry for them as well because of the sheer effort involved and time spent away from family. Australia is also a country that is intensely passionate about sport — historically it’s punched above its weight on the international stage. There is a lot of expectation placed on Australian athletes for sure, although I am certain they don’t sacrifice nearly as much as their Chinese counterparts. Growing up, sport and outdoor activities were a normal part of school life and they catered to all competitive levels. If you just wanted to have some fun, you can do so. If you wanted to be a professional athlete, you trained hard and could still lead a relatively normal life. I’m grateful for the privilege of growing up in Sydney. I’ve had the chance to dabble in a myriad of sports — cricket, soccer, rowing, Australian football, tennis and swimming. Parks and open areas are plentiful and there is lots of sunshine. While people in China may not have the same opportunities, it would be wrong to conclude that therefore they are less ‘sporty’ or care less about sport. The Chinese love their soccer, basketball, badminton and ping pong, to name just a few — sports that don’t require big grassy fields. Go to any park and you will find people young and old engaging in dancing, tai chi and martial arts. Sport as a hobby is alive and well both in China and the West. It is in the realm of professional sport where the difference in culture and attitude is most noticeable.’

What is the aim of the charity you represent, Spinal Research? Spinal Research is a UK charity that aims to beat paralysis. Where did you find the determination to run a marathon? What did this challenge mean to you? I have always had determination. A spinal injury doesn’t have to change your personality. The Marathon was a huge challenge — especially the training, which was really difficult — but what’s wrong with a challenge? It was an incredible feeling to finish. . How did your robotic suit help you to achieve your goal? The ReWalk suit I wore meant I could physically walk the Marathon and raise almost £200,000 for Spinal Research. It enables anyone with lower-limb paralysis like myself to walk, using motion sensors. They mimic the response that my joints would have to a shift in balance, had they not been paralysed. It was designed by an Israeli entrepreneur, Amit Goffer.

Meet Nikky Richardson — a young photography student who left Virginia, US to pursue her passion of taking pictures, at SCAD in Hong Kong.

Where are you from? I was born in Brooklyn in New York, but moved to Virginia when I was 2. It’s about a 15-minute drive from D.C. (Washington). Not a lot happens there. It’s pretty boring. If my family wasn’t there I wouldn’t care about it. Hong Kong and Asia are infinitely more exciting.

When did you realise that photography was your calling? I knew I wanted to take pictures since I was 13 and saw a Mac commercial on my sister’s fridge. It mesmerised me. You know how people stare at the back of cereal boxes while they’re eating cereal sometimes? I stared at that commercial like the back of a cereal box everyday. I still remember every part of that image — its forever in my mind.

1+2+3+4 MAGAZINE CUTOUTS Rachael Richards was my artist of influence here. She superimposes magazine cutouts into real environments. I’m not that good with computers, so this was manual photoshop for me — cutting out pictures and putting them into the scene itself, arts and crafts style. My favourite is the camera ‘drop’. That’s impressive that you knew what you wanted to do since 13! I don’t get people who say they don’t know what they want to do. If you listen to yourself, the answer is almost always clear. Sometimes there are pressures or expectations that makes it harder to listen to yourself - I’ve seen people get confused about that.

Especially with family. Were your family supportive? They were always really supportive. They just wanted me to be happy and be good at something. They were glad I had an interest and pursued it I guess. I’m lucky, my mom is also my best friend. I know how lucky I am to have that.

Do your Chinese classmates get the same support from home? Some do, but a lot of them really have to fight to be there. They have to convince their parents there is something they can get out of Arts College besides drawing and taking pictures — a career. And they are so good. All of them can draw.

象深刻啊！ 我不明白为什么会有人说自己不知道想干什么。如果你能仔细 倾听自己内心的声音，答案便十分明了。有的时候来自家庭的 压力或是期待会让你很难做到这一点，我也看到过很多人为此 困惑不已。

How did you nurture your passion? I just kept taking pictures. When I got older, I took pictures for my sister’s media classes. When I left school myself, I couldn’t find any interesting enough photography courses in New York or London so I said, “I’m coming to Hong Kong!” What do you miss most about home? Not getting stares in the street! I guess when Cantonese people see an African person holding a camera they definitely think: “She must be from somewhere else!” I also miss yellow raspberries. You don’t find them here, but you get them in Virginia. I don’t miss America at all, but I really miss my family. I wish I could take them everywhere with me in a suitcase! I have a nephew as of 6 days ago and I can’t wait to meet him. My family and I are so close it’s crazy! I don’t know how I made it over here. Did you experience any culture shock when you came? The smell of dried fish hit me in Hong Kong — I also realised pretty soon that people do not dress the same here! In the States people wear sweats everywhere. No one makes an effort. Here, I have to be primped and prepped at all times before I leave the house [laughs]. Other than that, no shocks. I love it here. This place is buzzing! I definitely don’t wish I was still in America.

BRACELET AND RING I love taking pictures of objects just as much as places or people. I took these for Aroxta Boutique. I love the ‘evil eye’ bracelet — it’s so pretty. Meet Dicky Manana, a maverick photographer and art student in a love with the city he calls home: Hong Kong. Dicky Manana是一名新锐摄影师和艺术学生，深爱着他的家乡——香港。 What drew you to photography? I’ve always been interested in visual media. I studied graphic design for two years and switched to visual art, which mainly focuses on drawing techniques. But at the end of the course, I eventually decided to pursue photography. I more or less consider myself a self-taught photographer.

Were your parents supportive? Yes, my parents are very supportive of my work. I’m grateful to have them. What was your most special picture and why? Running from the police was a memorable one. They tried to stop us while we were shooting the project named “7 days in Hong Kong” — since the location of this project was in a public market… The photo we got was worth it. Sometimes, it’s worth not asking security whether you can or can’t take a picture — just take it and make a quick getaway.

How do you balance creative passion with economic constraints in the commercial world? Commercial photography requires teamwork and restrictions — you can’t only consider your own pursuits. So I learnt to see it as one of the most pleasurable elements. To collaborate with a team, being capable of compromise with the client and at the same time, not losing my creative values, that gives me a sense of achievement. Restrictions can broaden creativity — you have to think harder about how to convey an idea within walls.

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome to get to where you are now? Confidence is the key to success. People often judge your works or give negative feedbacks subjectively. It crashed my confidence at the beginning, but I realised I had to believe in myself. When you are confident, you can do anything. You are open to learning and improving, but you also treat your work as more valuable, and that immediately impacts on how others value your work too. What inspires you? Without a doubt, it would definitely be the city I call home, Hong Kong. I was born here and lived here for almost my entire life. HK created me, its culture guides the direction of my shoots and I’m longing to show that culture to the world. Who has been the biggest influence on your work? The biggest influence on my works is Alexander McQueen. His collaborations with Nick Knight and Katy England lead me strongly towards imagery, rather than design.

Switching career was the biggest risk to start with! But in terms of starting the business, I think taking on a studio space is the hardest decision as it immediately puts a lot of financial pressure on you month to month... Meet Joyce Yung, who quit her banking job to set up Random Art Workshop (RAW), where she shares and practices her passion for photography… Joyce Yung 从银行也辞职设立了Random Art Workshop 继续挥洒她对于摄影的热情 What drew you to photography? I’ve always enjoyed taking photographs while travelling and I became seriously interested after I had the chance to do some freelance photography jobs. It was about 4 years ago when I decided I want to do it full time and started to plan towards that. I was in finance for a long time and really wanted a change, too.

When did you leave finance to start your own photography studio? I left after the last day of 2008. 2009 was a fresh start... I dived into it immediately by setting up my photography website and started renovating the studio space for photography and for Random Art Workshop. Did it help that you came from a finance background, when you opened your own business? I think any analytical background definitely helps with running a business, from creating revenue models, to problem solving and management skills. That said, there really isn’t anything that can truly prepare you for setting up a new business and navigating the challenges as they come!

Was your hubby Derek supportive? Yes absolutely!vHe has always been very supportive with my decisions and strategically helps me think through what makes sense and what needs to be improved. We actually started Random Art Workshop together, as we both strongly believe in the concept of everyday arts. I became a photographer and he became a filmmaker. We have a great partnership. We constantly bounce ideas off each other and come up with new ones together… Between our various businesses, we never really take a break from ‘work’!

get
models
comfortable with movement (say, swinging off a bamboo scaffolding…)?
I love capturing the moment, whether it was truly spontaneous or designed. I love being able to show motion through a 2D medium. I think it’s important to quickly connect with the model and make them feel comfortable with me and my camera. I would have discussed with the model beforehand what I have in mind and what they are actually comfortable doing. It’s about creating a story together, such that the model acts out an action or emotion that fits the story, and I capture that moment! I think photography is a partnership between the artist and subject: both sides need to have fun, to create the desired result. We still look back and marvel at our Wet Season shoot last September — water drops flying through the air at a girl in a raincoat and rubber boots! Amazing. How did you get the timing right? That was super fun! I really enjoyed working with AERIS, the models, and the team. The water flying shot was a bit challenging as it wasn’t that easy to access the water from all the rocks, so we had a limited number of attempts to shoot the splashing of the water. We practiced the timing a few times without the water and then just went for it. Our models, Alex and Helene, did a great job with timing and with matching their reactions — they were both quite natural actors. I would love to do more water shoots. What is the biggest thing people attending your classes want to learn? As digital cameras get more and more sophisticated and affordable, more people have access to great cameras, but are only using them on AUTO mode. Many students come to learn how to maximise their camera equipment and better compose the shot.

I have been to Taroko Gorge, appreciating those steep cliffs and flourishing forests in Taiwan. But Seediq Bale》 is still a new story to me: a strange race speaking an unknown dialect. When you can’t understand their language, each sentence must be clearly read word by word: When every scene is unfamiliar to you, and every image does not resonate with you, only the deep quake of humanity can touch your mind. The film explores the concept of ‘primitiveness’ from the perspective that the shortage of material makes people unsophisticated, and a hunt with abundant prey can make the whole tribe cheer. The emergence of schools, shops and post offices triggers an insatiable desire: civilisation costs dignity and simplicity. The consequence is the establishment of a wealthy kingdom while people are losing their faith. So, do you choose a short life with soul, or a long life of emptiness? If the result of ‘civilisation’ is merely wealth, it is no greater than living in savagery.

I always avoid reading travel notes — attempting to explain the landscape with their personal gain and loss; to measure the immeasurable, extensive culture with a tiny unit; and to name themselves with the title of ‘journeyers’ by recording their glory with a camera. For a long journey, we don’t need a tour guide, just a companion.
He, an adventurer, was born to travel. He refuses to live easily, but chooses to knock earth by his feet. He hates the virtual victory brought by conquer, because nature has translated his ambition to piety. Because of the angle and distance he perceives, he can stay out of the affair, presenting us a pure Tibet, without decoration and judgement. He is Zhu Yong, a perfect companion. Nagqu, Damxung, Lake Nam and Tanggula Mountains. There are rivers like the auspicious Yarlung Tsangpo. There are Buddha statues in front of which people cannot take any other posture except worship on bended knee. There is Qomolangma, the door to the secret of Tibet on the highest point of the world. Where did you grow up? I was born in Chongqing in 1982 and my family migrated to Hong Kong when I was two years old. I grew up in Hong Kong and have been deeply influenced by its culture.

Did you always want to be an artist? I had decided that painting would be my lifelong career from the time that I could draw. Being an artist has always been my dream; it still is and will never change.

Flying a plane has been the inner desire of my heart. But I know that if I were to choose between being an artist and a pilot, I would not hesitate to become an artist. To me, the plane is a means that might lead me to freedom, in the same way that driving allows me to go wherever I wish to go. I also yearn for the limitless feeling of flying in the air, like the vastness of the sea. Although I can only paint planes to pursue this dream presently, I will definitely obtain a pilot’s licence if circumstances permit in the future!

Did your family support you when you decided to pursue art? I’m very fortunate as my family supports my art career a hundred percent. They gave me ample space and time to learn and for this I really have to thank my family.

Where did you study? I graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. This school influenced my whole life. I am immensely grateful towards my school teachers and friends who have empowered me with the ability to become an artist.

1982生於重慶,兩歲移居香港,成長於香港,深受香港文化 影響 。

CULTURE
Tell us about your overlapping celebrity figure paintings — what is the idea behind your signature style? We can never determine the multiple facets and personalities of a person. When layers of colours intertwine, they are like the never-ending changes in man’s heart, resulting in multiple faces. We are unable to define our own identity by ourselves; most of the time self is defined and perfected through symbols from others or upon the reflection of such symbolic meanings. Inevitably we become embedded in the semiotic system to seek affirmation.

Where did you find your inspiration? From ‘Tao Te Ching’ by Lao Zi, ‘Nan Hua Jing’ by Zhuang Zi and ‘Yi Jing’.*
你通常從哪裡獲得靈感？
How many years did it take for your career to get off the ground? I was lucky — my career took off quite quickly. I was identified as having a so-called unique style, so there were opportunities for me to showcase my work around the world. Connoisseur Contemporary Hong Kong started working with me in 2006 and introduced the concept of the 80s-born artists at that time, which was something innovative and refreshing to collectors, some of whom were beginning to be interested in younger artists. In 2007, they exhibited my work in art fairs in Singapore, Taipei and Shanghai and in 2008 I held my first solo exhibition in Hong Kong and in Singapore in the same year. In 2009, they brought my work to art fairs in Basel, Switzerland and Miami, United States and in 2010 again in Basel. Through such platforms, overseas collectors became familiar with my work.

When you were starting out, what was your greatest challenge? In this pluralistic society, the difficulty about art is that there is no longer a standard of what is good and what is not good. You have to understand clearly what kind of person you are, what you yourself would really like to do, and what you wish to express with your work.
你遇到過最大的挑戰是什麽？
How did you overcome that? By reading more, socialising more and reflecting more on myself.

What is the difference in ideals for your paintings now, compared to when you started? From 2010, I started learning about the work of Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi and reflecting on the attitude towards the way of life. From there, I started thinking about the need to define our own identity through symbols from a third party to perfect our self and question whether one really has an inner self. When you look into the mirror, does the mirror reflect the real you?
你從前的作品和現在的作品要表達的價值觀有何不同？
How did you create a name for yourself among global buyers? There wasn’t a formula. I just allowed nature to take its course. Creating art needs to be from your heart and it is more important to understand what you wish to do and express that wish.

從2010年開始,我開始接觸有關老子,莊子的著作,在思 考一種人生的態度,從而思考我們對於自我的確認需要通 過第三者賦予的意義來完善自我.到底人有沒有真正的自 我呢? 就像你照鏡子,鏡子裹是否你真正的自己呢?
也沒有什麼方法,順其自然,創作還是需要從心出發,先清 楚明白自己到底想做什麼和表達什麼比較重要 。
* The ‘Tao Te Ching’ is a Chinese classic fundamental Taoist text, written by Lao Zi, a Chinese philosopher from the Zhou Dynasty. The ‘Nan Hua Jing’ is a book on Taoism during the early warring states period by Chinese philosopher Zhuang Zi. The ‘Yi Jing’ is a book from which stems the natural philosophy in the traditional Chinese ideology, culture and ethical practices. *道德經是中國經典的道家文化的基本學說，是周朝的道德家老子創作的。諵譁經是戰國早期的道德家莊子創作的道家學說。易經是來源於中國傳統意識形態和文 化道德中的自然哲學。

Do you think of lush forests, sleepy fishing villages and bubbling waterfalls when you think ‘Hong Kong?’ Didn’t think so. 每当你提到香港，你会将之与茂密的森林、宁静的小渔村和奔腾的瀑布联系在一起吗？ 恐怕很难… For a heaving 42 million tourists last summer, Hong Kong was a convenient stopover en route to Europe, or a glamourous getaway in itself… They came mostly for a healthy dose of hedonism, and to pay homage to the city’s hundreds of gleaming malls. Most were probably unaware of the enchanting jungles and sparkling white beaches, just 20 minutes beyond the towering skyscrapers — or that 90 per-cent of Hong Kong is in fact, wilderness… Take Upper Cheung Sha Beach — this glorious palm beach of bouncy, white sand stretches for several kilometres, and it is a joy to stroll along through the waves. You can reach it by hopping on the MTR to Tung Chung, Lantau (be sure to leave an hour to get there). From there, take a short bus ride to Upper Cheung Sha Beach and spend the day kayaking, paragliding and frolicking in the water. When the sun begins to set, it’s fun to wander down the sandy, vine-covered path to Lower Cheung Sha and see both sides from the pagoda overlooking the bay. Continue down the slope to High Tide, serving up authentic Thai dishes and ice-blended mango — the perfect end to a summer’s day!
For an adventure, The MacLehose Stage 2 is one of my favourites. We took the MTR to Hang Hau (in the New Territories), then a green taxi to Sai Kung’s Long Ke, near the pristine High Island Reservoir — from there begins a breathtaking coastal trail. This hike is not for the faint-hearted: it begins steeply uphill, along giant Mediterranean cliffs. Our efforts were rewarded by the spectacular, glittering turquoise beach of Tai Long Wan, just beyond those cliffs. A few small groups were setting up barbecues or camping overnight on the powdery white sand. We continued on to a charming local noodle restaurant overlooking the next bay, before reaching a rickety old bridge leading to Chek Keng bay, from where we caught a small boat to Wong Shek Pier, Sai Kung. Watching the bays and coves go past, we realised how far we had come. The last boat sometimes leaves as early as 5pm, so be sure you start no later than 10am if you want to stop for a swim, and bring plenty of cash for boat fares, which vary depending on whether a small boat ($20 per person) or a sampan ($800 per group) is available.
WORLD 香港去年夏天吸引了4200万名游客，无论作为到欧洲的中转站 还是作为目的地本身都很受欢迎。大部分人来香港都是想放松享 乐或是在这座城市中上百家商场中购物，却没有意识到就在离高 楼大厦20分钟车程的地方，有着迷人的丛林、白色的沙滩。事实 上，香港百分之九十的地方都是郊野公园。 上长沙海滩漫延几公里的沙滩在海浪中显得格外迷人，你可以坐 地铁东涌线到达，不过一定要记得预留一个小时在路上的时间。 到了那里之后，再坐一程八十就能到达上长沙海滩。在那里可以 划皮划艇、搭滑翔伞或是在水中嬉戏。在夕阳西下之时，在通往 下长沙海滩的路上漫步，看看高耸在上的寺庙的全貌，绝对是一 种享受。再接着往前走到长沙小厨品尝一下地道的泰国菜和芒果 冰沙，这才是完美的夏天。 如果想要探险，麦理浩径的第二段是我的最爱。我们坐地铁到了 新界的坑口，再从那里搭出租车到了万宜水库附近的浪茄，从那 里开始了一段惊心动魄的远足。如果心脏不够强大的话不建议参 加这类远足，因为旅途的开始就是一段陡峭的上坡，不过当我们 看到峭壁另一边大浪湾碧蓝的海水的时候，之前的辛苦也都值得 了。有一些人在雪白的沙滩上烧烤或是安营扎寨。 我们又到了一家俯瞰下一个海湾的面馆，之后到了一座通往赤径 湾的古桥面前。我们搭乘了一艘小船到了西宫的黄石码头。看着 经过的一个有一个海湾，我们才意识到我们走了有多远。末班船 在下午五点开出，所以如果你想要在海里游泳的话就一定要在上 午十点之前出发，带好足够的现金付船资。小船每人20港币，舢 板800港币包船。

For a trip to the beach on Hong Kong’s laid-back south side, try The Dragon’s Back & Shek-O: Take a taxi to Shek-O Road (near Cape Collinson Road) and proceed up the hill. While ‘the dragon’ sits at an intimidating 284 metres high and rolls itself along the top of Shek-O mountain, the path soon levels out and you’ll find yourself walking along the flat ‘back’ of the mountain, overlooking Shek-O beach and To Tei Wan Village. We usually conclude the day’s efforts with a swim in the sea and dinner at the main Thai restaurant in To Tei Village (with wonderful seafood fried rice served in a juicy pineapple). You can take the minibus to Shau Kei Wan, and from there catch the MTR.
如果想在香港的南端来一次沙滩之旅，可以尝试一下山脊龙径和 石澳。搭乘出租车到石澳路（歌连臣角道附近）再上山。山脊龙 径在海拔284米的额高度，位于石澳山顶。这条路很平坦，你会 发现自己走在山“平坦”的背上，俯瞰石澳沙滩和土地湾村。在 这天快要结束的时候，我们在海里游了泳，并且在土地湾村的一 家泰国餐厅里吃到了很棒的原只菠萝海鲜炒饭。你可以搭小巴到 筲箕湾再搭地铁。 另一个消暑胜地则是南丫岛。在中环的四号码头搭轮渡就能到达 隐匿的南丫岛。岛上地形复杂，有小山丘、有机农场、小村庄， 而且没有汽车。这里新鲜的鱼和爽脆的鱿鱼很出名。岛的另外一 段的榕树湾更大、更出名，但是南端的索罟湾的食物也十分美 味，特别是咖喱蟹。沿着两边都是咖啡厅和农场的路漫步或是骑 车回到榕树湾，你会看到一个在岩石掩映中美丽海滩。那里有个
Another fantastic summer escape is Lamma Island. Hop on the ferry from Central Pier 4 and arrive at lowkey Lamma. This island has a rugged landscape with granite hills, organic farms, tiny villages and no cars. It is perhaps most famous for its fresh fish and crispy squid on the wharf. The bigger, more established ones lie across the island at Yung Shue Wan, but we found the one on the ‘Southern Tree’ side of Sok Kwu Chau to be equally tasty, particularly the crab curries. Meander or cycle through the little café and farm-lined streets back towards Yung Shue Wan and you’ll reach a beautiful beach with bronzed rocks sheltering each side. There is a particularly elegant, verandah-style restaurant on the sand, from where I would probably enjoy a glass of chilled wine at sunset.

Lastly, allow me to share with you a secret forest with eight waterfalls, between Nam Shan and Pak Tung: This all-flat Lantau trail is so mysterious — with overgrown paths, bubbling waterfalls, toadstools and fluttering butterflies — my friends always remark that it is like walking through a fairytale (I think it resembles a Lord of the Rings film set…). To get there, catch the ferry from Central Pier 6 to Mui Wo, Lantau and from there, get any bus to the Nam Shan Country Park (10 minutes from the pier). The start of the trail should read ‘to Pak Tung’ and ‘Sunset Peak.’ Once you have climbed the only uphill part and reached the helicopter pad with panoramic views over the mountains, you will reach a fork in the road. Take a sharp left, onto the path with the sign ‘to Pak Tung’ and proceed. This is especially fun if it’s been a raining (which is often, in Hong Kong!). The waterfalls and refreshing rock pools will be invitingly full, overflowing across the stoney path… After a day of splashing in the falls (and ideally a picnic on the rocks), catch the bus back to Mui Wo and stop by The Kitchen for arguably the most flavoursome, thin pizzas in town.
When you return to the neon-and-tramway hustle and bustle in less than an hour, you’ll be left wondering whether it was all a dream.
