unglasses, Palm Trees and the Golden Gate Bridge Included in New Design by San Francisco Resident as part of United’s ‘Her Art Here’ competition United has officially welcomed a one-of-a-kind, California-themed aircraft livery to its fleet – a Boeing 757

created by a San Francisco resident as part of the airline’s national Her Art Here competition. Designed by artist Tsungwei Moo, the eye-catching plane is a tribute to the Golden State where United operates two major hubs – one in Los Angeles and the other in San Francisco – and features quintessential California imagery including sunglasses, palm trees and the Golden Gate Bridge. Launched in February, United’s Her Art Here contest gave female artists like Tsungwei the chance to use an airplane as their canvas, inspiring women around the world who may be interested in careers in the arts. A labor of passion, Tsungwei’s creation was also shaped by her personal journey. The talented artist grew up in Taipei, Taiwan before emigrating to San Francisco 14 years ago aboard a United Airlines flight. “It’s truly a dream come true. The vibrant colors, sunshine and subject matter make it California. I could never imagine one day my art will be displayed on a United Airlines plane which brought me to the United States. There are no culture borders in art and it doesn’t matter my status is an emigrant female artist. This plane has its mission now, to bring more joy into people’s life, connecting people and uniting the world through experience art,” noted Ms. Moo Before taking to the skies, United’s Her Art Here California plane spent time in Amarillo, Texas where it took 17 days for painters to transform the Boeing 757 into Tsungwei’s winning design. Her Art Here Contest Her Art Here is the first-of-its-kind contest designed to find and uplift underrepresented women artists by providing a chance to have their work painted on a canvas like no other – a United Airlines aircraft. According to the National Museum of Women in the Arts, while 51 percent of today’s artists are women less than 13 percent of art on display in U.S. museums is by female artists. Having their designs painted on a Boeing 757 provides artists with a traveling canvas that flies on average 1.6 million miles a year and 476 cross-country trips. The aircraft is roughly 3,666 times larger than the typical 18” x 24” canvas. The Her Art Here contest was open to those who identify as a woman, including cisgender, transgender, womanaligned or non-binary, and reside in the United States, and asked artists to visually represent either New York/New Jersey or California, two key markets for the airline, in their own style, while combining the company’s mission and what the communities in each region mean to the artist. Entries were scored by a panel of judges based on contest criteria and winners were determined based on a combination of judging scores and public voting.

United Airlines CRJ-550 Tickets Available for Purchase Beginning Saturday, Oct. 12

F

irst flight on the world’s only two-cabin, 50-seat aircraft starts Oct. 27 from Chicago O’Hare to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania United Airlines announced tickets for its newest regional fleet member, the Bombardier CRJ-550, will be

available for purchase starting Saturday, October 12 for travel beginning Sunday, October 27. The initial schedule includes 15 cities from Chicago O’Hare. The CRJ-550 is the world’s only 50-seat regional aircraft to offer true first-class seating and other premium amenities, including: •

Space for every customer to bring a roller bag on board.

A self-serve refreshment center for United First customers featuring a wide assortment of snacks and beverages.

More overall legroom per seat than any other 50-seat aircraft flown by a U.S. airline.

• The ability to stay connected while in flight with United Wi-Fi.

John and Martha King Inducted in to The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals Hall of Fame

J

ohn and Martha King, co-chairmen of King Schools, have been honored by being inducted into The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) Founders and Pioneers Hall of Fame, in recognition of their life-long dedication to making aviation learning accessible to all. John and Martha started their aviation training careers by teaching private pilot and instrument rating accelerated

ground school courses all over the country. They had a barnstormer’s schedule, flying their own airplane to destinations around the country to teach weekend ground schools and returning to San Diego to handle their business during the week. They estimate that they taught about 500 of these live courses to audiences of 20 to 400 people. In the late 1980’s they put their classes on video tape, selling them first directly to flight instructors and then to pilots, revolutionizing the aviation training industry. Since they started King Schools in 1974, over 500,000 individual pilots have taken their courses. Founded in 1976, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of minorities in all aviation and aerospace careers. Vanessa Blacknall-Jamison, the Board Chairwoman of OBAP since 2016, said, “The obvious question concerning John and Martha’s selection is, ‘Why are we inducting this couple into the OBAP Founders and Pioneers Hall of Fame?’. The answer is that we are thrilled to recognize these legends of the aerospace industry because their teaching transcends race, color, religion, orientation, classification and identification.” Ms. Blacknall-Jamison continued, “As we walked with the Kings through our Hall of Fame, members constantly stopped us. They wanted to thank the Kings for helping them get through their tests, take a selfie, and say how much the Kings’ teaching meant to them. It was an amazing outpouring of affection that affirmed our decision to induct them into our Founders and Pioneers Hall of Fame.” Martha King said, “This honor is so appreciated and is very humbling. An induction into any Hall of Fame was unimaginable when we started teaching people how to fly, and this is very special. An airplane doesn’t care about the race, color, gender or creed of the pilot. The plane only responds to the skill and knowledge of the pilot. It’s that simple. Our teaching is available to anyone who has a passion for aviation, and recognition by the OBAP is just awesome.” John King added, “We want to help our customers learn to fly safely and competently, and be able to protect themselves, their passengers and the people they love. For the OBAP to recognize and honor our teaching as making aviation learning accessible to all was both a huge surprise and a great delight.”

Leading from The Right Seat Elevating your crew and “leading from behind� B y: M a t t h e w R u t o w s k i

P

ilots around the world are taught from day one that the left seat is a place of authority and leadership. When a pilot steps aboard, enters the cockpit and turns towards the left, it is a symbolic moment. This individual is assuming command of the aircraft before them, big or small, tall or short, jet or prop, with cargo or passengers. Regardless of the ship, it now rests in the capable hands of its captain, no matter how brief that moment in time may be.

But what of that other seat? In that often-overlooked perch sits a fellow pilot, one equally commendable. This is a great seat – AWESOME, in the true Merriam-Webster meaning of the word. This is a seat many in the world can only dream of occupying. This is a place where you always have a front row view to all the action, and more. Why should it be any less? For every aviator, this is a place we come to learn, to grow, to observe, and to practice. But why not to lead? Each member of a flight crew is equally integral to the safe, successful completion of every flight. Sometimes however, from the aircraft’s right, we feel a little less “in the hunt” or important. It’s funny how just a few feet of lateral distance can make such a huge difference. In my research on the topic, I have yet to discover any decree that states one must have a specific title in order to be a leader. My own discovery has made it apparent that we take advantage of too few opportunities to lead from the right seat. I’m not necessarily talking about making command decisions (at a fraction of a legacy 121’s captain’s pay) and I’m obviously not suggesting we say, “death be to law and order,” and create anarchy in the carefully architected cockpit. Instead, I’m talking about inspiring your crew while promoting a strong, competent, symbiotic partnership. Often, we’re offered plenty of opportunities to build one another up and keep the ship right. A second set of eyes, from those few feet to the right, can bring in a fresh perspective or offer an encouraging, confidence-inspiring sign of agreement. You are as great a leader as any when you cooperatively take initiative, take responsibility and take ownership from the right seat. Being a proactive pilot from the right often steers your aircraft in such a way that whomever is on the left may begin to look in YOUR direction. It is easy to spot a “superior” (four bars notwithstanding) but, if you pay attention, it can be even easier to identify a leader. “Leading from behind” allows you to uplift those around you – personally, emotionally and professionally. Nelson Mandela put it so eloquently; “It is better to lead from behind and put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur.” In the 121 world, one must find the balance to lead from the right. It requires patience, finesse and acuity. You’re not running the show, but you’re putting forward your “best stuff” to help move the whole team forward – as every great leader should.

Outside of 121, we find an interesting set of circumstances. Based on common “seat swap” practices, wherein the PIC (pilot in command) and the SIC (second in command) actually exchange seats, the PIC isn’t always the one occupying the left seat. This pivotal time is indicative of changes – the most important of which is that PIC now assumes the role of PM (pilot monitoring.) The PIC’s role becomes that of a supportive, obedient crew member and mentor. In every GREAT captain you’ll find a great teacher – not a teacher like the one who brought candy to class or gave you an extra 15 minutes of recess on Fridays, but the teacher who guides you to become your best self. These extraordinary teacher/ mentors are the unsung heroes and heroines of aviation. This sometimes thankless and oftentimes exhausting role is often taken for granted. Think about what makes that variety of captain great. They still lead from the right seat, not like a dictator in a totalitarian regime, but rather offering guidance, promoting decision making and building up their colleagues. In my opinion, this is the hardest job a captain has. One has to walk a tight rope, acting as the PM while giving the pilot flying (PF) the chance to improve their skills and continuously develop and grow. A good leader knows when to stay quiet (both verbally and with body language), and that is sometimes the hardest part. A good leader doesn’t just know the right thing to say – they know the right times to say nothing. I don’t mean to imply that such a relationship does not exist in the airline community, because obviously, pilots do trade PM/PF duties. My hope is to emphasize how that symbolic switch from seat to seat can really “turn it up a notch” for those proving their mettle in 91 and 135. Think about what kind of leader you are. Now, consider how you can become a better leader, and in turn, a better follower. Recognize the opportunities you’re given and execute each at 100%. Real leaders don’t need a title or four stripes on their shoulders – real leaders adapt and excel, propelling their team to great heights, regardless of where they sit.

When planning for maternity, consider the following: time off, pay, benefits and return to work.

Time-off Time-off includes any absences and/or leaves from initial pregnancy notification until one year after delivery. During the pregnancy there are a number of reasons pilots may not be fit to fly and therefore choose not to do so. For example, a pregnant pilot may experience morning sickness, fatigue or a high-risk pregnancy. After delivery, pilots are rarely ready to return to work after 6-8 weeks like other new working moms. Further, breastfeeding and pumping is a logistical and

Current Market Environment and Strategies B y: G l e n n N e v o l a

W

e find ourselves living in a finance world right now where a single tweet can move the markets 800-1000 points. If you try to time this type of market, you will likely find yourself going mad given all the volatility. So, what’s the best plan to employ in this type of market uncertainty? Actually, it’s the same strategy you should use in any market; implement a diversified plan, stick with the plan, rebalance periodically, dollar cost average and keep emotions out. There are four core principles to long term investing; diversification, allocation, dollar cost averaging and rebalancing. I will expand on the first two of these in this article and cover the other two in a later column.

Diversification: Having a properly diversified asset mix provides the for the possibility that you could outperform the overall market because not all asset classes move in a correlated way. You should be exposed to many areas of the market in order to take advantage of sectors that may be out of favor now but will be in favor later. For example, you should be exposed to large companies, small companies, growth stocks, value stocks, domestic and international companies. Plus, you should be exposed to equities and bonds. This year alone, intermediate term bonds have returned almost 9% year to date – which is historically a very good return for bonds that usually act as a hedge in a portfolio. Allocation: Diversification is an important strategy, but how much to invest in each asset class is another. You don’t want to chase returns and change your allocation too often because you’ll want to give time for the plan you enact to work. But how you set up the initial percentage in each sector is important. You do need to consider your risk tolerance, age and timeframe to determine the proper mix with which you’re comfortable and which is appropriate. Tropical Cyclones B y: A n t h o n y L o r e n t i

O

ur subject this month is tropical cyclones. Rather than delve deeply into myriad reasons behind the formation of tropical cyclones (e.g. hurricanes and related systems), I will differentiate between the various kinds of basic tropical systems. This basic review will lead to a discussion of one particular variation of a tropical cyclone, namely an extratropical cyclone. In doing so, I hope this article will serve as a catalyst to adjust your pre- and in-flight decision making when the indicators are that the hurricane has weakened into non-existence.

Tropical Cyclone 101 Tropical cyclones (low pressure areas) begin their lives in various tropical regions of the world. Depending over which body of water they form, they are either referred to as hurricanes or typhoons. Hurricanes are born in the Atlantic. Typhoons are born in the Pacific. Henceforth, I will be referencing Atlantic systems in this article. The evolution of a hurricane begins with tropical waves, then becoming tropical depressions and ultimately developing into a hurricane. Each phase of the overall tropical system development is defined by sustained wind speeds and circulation (or lack thereof) within the system. An area of tropical low pressure with sustained winds up to 39 mph is considered a tropical depression. An area of low pressure with wind speeds of 40-74 mph is a tropical storm. Finally, an area of tropical vorticity with wind speeds in excess of 74 mph is a hurricane. Vorticity is rotation or spin in the atmosphere, or spin. Another key ingredient in tropical storm or hurricane development is circulation. If the disturbance includes circulation, then it is either a tropical storm or hurricane depending on its sustained wind speed. The distinction between these two weather phenomena is discernable circulation. A tropical depression has no circulation or very poorly defined circulation. A hurricane is nature’s attempt to restore balance to climate. Said another way, the persistent heating of tropical waters requires that nature dispose of this energy in some way. Hurricanes are that way.

Extratropical systems When it comes to hurricanes and flying, the subject is generally pretty simple – we don’t. Let’s address extratropical cyclones and what we should consider when faced with flying near, in or around one. Extratropical cyclones can be a further evolution of a hurricane. In a sense, they can be part of the process of how hurricanes die. Once a hurricane has lost its status and notoriety (i.e. it weakens), it might seem okay to fly into or around the remnants. The following are some examples of systems that were extraordinarily dangerous despite either not being cyclones or having been cyclones that entered extratropical storm status •

Hurricane Hazel. 1954.

Columbus Day Storm. 1962. Washington State and Oregon.

November 10, 1975. The sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

• December 14, 1985. Iceland. An area of low pressure developed that was so intense it achieved barometric pressure equal to a category five hurricane. I bet it was really windy that day! This was not a hurricane. •

An extratropical cyclone has its origins in hurricanes. When a hurricane has begun to morph into a “cold core” system versus a “warm core” system, the transformation to extratropical has begun. This happens when the hurricane begins to move into higher latitudes. The process by which a hurricane takes on different characteristics from its original form is key to how it relates to us in an airplane. By definition, an extratropical low is a large-scale low-pressure system that occurs in midlatitudes. Technically, it does not require a hurricane to be the root of its existence. That said, hurricanes are certainly a good starting point for one to form. Among the features of these systems that could be hazardous to airplanes are: •

Bombogenesis and negative tilting

High winds – sustained and gusts even after the hurricane dies due to deepening of the low.

• Baroclinic zones – areas of starkly contrasting temperatures/temperature gradients in the extreme. Tremendous instability can result (e.g. wind shear). This is often the case when the system achieves a cold core and then passes over warm water. • Thunderstorms As pilots, we need to be on guard. We need remain vigilant once a hurricane has come inland. We need to be very mindful of the many hazards and intensity that sometimes accompany a weakening hurricane. We need to be very careful of where and when we fly our trusty aircraft. This kind of system is not necessarily your garden-variety low pressure.

Alisson Kistner – Amazon Amphibian Operation

Goiânia, Brazil

Eighth Runner-Up Alisson’s photo entry was taken during takeoff on Rio Canumã in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, deep in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. He claims the Cessna Caravan Amphibian is the most incredible airplane he’s ever flown. He believes it’s the best aircraft for water landings and takeoffs on the Amazon and its countless tributaries. Alisson told ACN, “I saw many amazing things flying in the Amazon Rainforest region, including native tribes that live without any modern conveniences including health care.” Alisson is a first officer with LATAM Airlines in the Airbus A320. Before he was employed by LATAM, he flew out of Manaus in an amphibious Cessna Caravan. His journeys took him to isolated parts of the Amazon Rainforest, often ferrying government officials and fishermen looking for the ultimate in remote, exotic angling.

Sami Ouberdous – Oh! Hi There!

France

Seventh Runner-Up Sam’s striking photo was captured on a flight from Marrakech to Paris, returning from a holiday vacation. He was sleeping when his sister awakened him to see an F-18 from the Spanish Air Force. It was flying in formation with our Boeing 737 and stayed with their flight for about ten minutes. The captain explained that it was, in fact, an interception exercise. Sam commented on the memory, “It made my day! Fortunately, I had my camera, and I did not stop taking pictures up until it gracefully banked away and left us.” Sam is a 19-year old Franco-Belgian student in France with two big passions – aviation and photography. He aspires to become an airline pilot but until then, he flies himself in a PA28 around Luxembourg, Northern France and Germany.

Matt Birchall – Caution: Wake Turbulence

Sixth Runner-Up Matt dramatically describes his photo: “Picture this, the sun has just come up over the Bay of Bengal on an early morning flight to DPS (Bali, Indonesia). We’re in the middle of dodging the seasonal thunderstorms when an Etihad A380 appears on the horizon. They do look big when sporting full contrails! The closing speed between heavy jets is close to 900 knots so there wasn’t much time to get this shot but a burst of photos from my iPhone captured this beauty. The sight of the pressure wave ahead of the aircraft makes it look particularly impressive. Matt is a Boeing 777 first officer for a Middle East airline and has been flying for about 15 years. The thing he loves most about his job is the places it takes him and the people he meets. His fondest memories are of flying throughout his home country of New Zealand in a Dash-8 when visual approaches and hand-flying were regular treats.

Jeff Stafford - Falcon 900LX on Arrival into Hong Kong Fourth Runner-Up Jeff Stafford entered two photos and both placed in the top ten! Jeff claims that his passion for flying started at a very early age while riding in missionary aircraft in central Africa with his parents who were educators there. Today, he is based in Hong Kong as a CAM and Line Training Captain with TAG Aviation Asia, flying a G-450. The tremendous growth in business aviation in the Far East led him to his current gig from a stateside career in a variety of aircraft. Jeff’s fourth runner-up entry is a Falcon 900LX winglet at sunset which was taken on an aircraft demonstration flight where he was able to ride along as a passenger back into Hong Kong. Usually up front, Jeff doesn’t often have the opportunity to enjoy the cabin of a business jet. He said of the flight and the photo, “It was a great experience to sit back, be catered to, and be inspired by the ever-changing lighting as day turned to night. The scale of knowledge represented in the tech we get to play with is formidable. Hats off to the designers and engineers who’ve made this pilot’s life a dream come true.” In addition to the heading, altitude, speed, and navigation references, the Enhanced Vision System (EVS) incorporates a FLIR (forward looking infra-red) camera that provides IR imaging information of ground and inflight environments which is particularly useful when operating in low-visibility and adds significantly to situational awareness. Stefaan V. – Sunny Day at the Beach Third Runner-Up Stefaan has asked that we only use his last initial because he is an active-duty pilot with the Belgian Air Force. He has been flying the C-130 since 2007. His dramatic photo was taken during a training exercise that took them to Rømø Beach, Denmark. On this sortie, two C-130s flew in formation and was taken from the open ramp of the overflying wingman. The landing strip on the beach measured only 3000ft by 60ft, which is the absolute peacetime minimum for a C-130 Hercules.

Second Runner-Up David Curtis was always fascinated with aviation and now has the privilege of flying to almost every remote corner of Australia. In 2018, he joined East Air, a Far North Queensland company with a twice-daily commercial service to Lizard Island in a Cessna C208B Caravan. The island is located 130nm north of Cairns, Queensland, Australia and is home to a fivestar resort attracting guests from around the world who come to enjoy the amazing scenery of the Great Barrier Reef. Flight time to Lizard Island is only one hour from his home base in Cairns but his family usually only hears about it. David was inspired to capture the wonder of the reef and Lizard Island to share the beauty with family and friends. On the day he took the photo, he was flying two crew which allowed him to take this amazing photo. He said, “It’s truly the best office in the world!”

Grand Prize Winner Helicopter pilot, Kim Skaugvoll captured this photo in the Badlands National Park in South Dakota with one of his trusted Canon cameras, a 5D MKIII. The lack of ambient light in such a remote area allows one to see the Milky Way so with a little two-second exposure and some camera magic, Kim has provided a beautifully composed picture that gives us the awesomeness of nature coupled with an image of his tour helicopter. Kim’s love affair with helicopters began at the moment of his birth, quite literally. He was born above the Arctic Circle in Norway in a Huey helicopter. All his life he dreamed, then worked, to become a helicopter pilot.
