Founded on 15 September 1986, the Sabesp Engineers Association (AESabesp) is a non-profit entity that, until 2008, consisted of engineers, architects, geologists, geographers, technologists, chemists and biologists from the São Paulo State Basic Sanitation Company (Sabesp). In May 2008, it opened its doors to include society at large after it attained qualification as an OSCIP (Public Interest, Non-Governmental Organization). Accordingly, any and every citizen can now join AESabesp. This qualification was made possible under Law no. 9,790/99, ratified by the Federal Public Authority, which made AESabesp an entity

with the autonomy to develop socio-environmental activities directed at basic sanitation, for the community, through its members, such as the development of projects, consultancy services, training and other activities, which can be offered to the market anywhere in Brazil. With regards to fund raising, the entity is now able to consolidate partnerships in the public sector, with fewer bureaucratic hurdles, and it is also able to look for sponsorship deals with private enterprise, for which private companies can receive tax breaks whilst, at the same time, boosting their corporate images as socially responsible companies. In order to attain this qualification, a Department of SocioEnvironmental Projects was created, independent of the executive

and associate boards of the entity, in order to command the AESabesp Socio-Environmental Project Portfolio and to register specialists. Thus, proponents can receive technical and institutional support in order to see their sustainable development ideas transformed into reality, and to execute the projects they conceive. The projects are presented to potential social investors and to public funds in order to obtain the necessary resources. The Socio-Environmental Project Department has several specialists in several different areas, who collaborate in the development and execution of projects, and it has also established several partnerships with other institutions.
