City of Edmonton: Monthly Building Permit Values
January 2014
Residential permits represents the largest portion of the monthly construction value. New single detached houses accounts for 42 per cent of the total construction value and all residential permits accounts for 71 per cent of the total construction value. The construction value for residential permits is up 37 per cent from January 2013. Commercial and institiutional permits account for 19 per cent and 7 per cent of the total construction value, while industrial and miscellaneous permits account for the remainder. The total year-to-date construction value for each permit type is as follows: • • • • •
Commercial: $72 million Industrial: $8.6 million Institutional: $28 million Residential: $267 million Miscellaneous: $1.5 million
At the end of December 2013, the total annual construction value of building permits for the Edmonton region was $5.5 billion. The value of construction within the City of Edmonton represented 71.8 per cent of the total amount. This is up from the five-year annual average of 66.8 per cent (20082012).

The construction value for residential permits is up 9 per cent from February 2013. Commercial permits account for 22 per cent of the total construction value, while industrial, institutional and miscellaneous permits account for the remainder. The total year-to-date construction value for each permit type is as follows: • • • • •

This is up 3 per cent compared to May 2013 ($332 million) and up 8 per cent compared to the five-year monthly average ($315 million). It is up 18 per cent from the previous month, April 2014 ($289 million).

Commercial and Institiutional permits account for 32 per cent and 3 per cent of the total construction value, while Industrial and Miscellaneous permits account for the remainder. The total year-to-date value for each permit type is as follows: • Commercial: $385 million • Industrial: $22 million • Institutional: $96 million • Residential: $1,156 million • Miscellaneous: $9 million At the end of April 2014, the total annual construction value of building permits for the Edmonton region was $1,856 million. The City of Edmonton represented 71 per cent of the total amount. This is up from the fiveyear annual average of 69 per cent (2009-2013).

June 2014 The total construction value of building permit applications in the City of Edmonton for the month of June 2014 is $409 million. This is up 69 per cent compared to June 2013 ($242 million) and up 73 per cent compared to the five-year monthly average ($236 million). It is up 20 per cent from the previous month, May 2014 ($341 million). Year-to-date ending June 30, 2014, total building permit construction value is $2,076 million. The yearto-date values are down 3 per cent compared to 2013 ($2,141 million) and up 34 per cent compared to the five-year average (YTD 2009-2013: $1,550 million).

Residential permits represent the largest portion of the monthly construction value. New single detached houses account for 47 per cent and all residential permits account for 67 per cent of the total construction value. The year-to-date construction value for Industrial Permit is up 229 per cent, Residential is up 18 per cent, Commercial is up 41 per cent, and Institutional is down 67 per cent compared to 2013. The total year-to-date construction value for each permit type is as follows: • • • • •

At the end of August 2014, the total annual construction value of building permits for the Edmonton region was $4,044 million. The value of construction within the City of Edmonton represented 73 per cent of the total amount. This is up from the five-year annual average of 69 per cent (2009-2013).

Year-to-date numbers for row-housing units are up 46 % and semi detached dwellings are up 33% compared to the same period in 2013. The year-to-date construction value for industrial is up 108 per cent, residential is up 17 per cent, commercial is up 32 per cent, and institutional is down 19 per cent compared to 2013. The total year-to-date construction value for each permit type is as follows: • Commercial: $1052 million • Industrial: $131 million • Institutional: $451 million • Residential: $2,966 million • Miscellaneous: $24 million At the end of November 2014, the total annual construction value of building permits for the Edmonton region was $5,644 million.
