City of Edmonton: Monthly Building Permit Values
January 2013
Residential permits represent the largest portion of the monthly construction value. New single detached houses account for 44 per cent of the total construction value and all residential permits account for 79 per cent of the total construction value. The construction value for residential permits is up 69 per cent from January 2012. Commercial permits account for 19 per cent of the total construction value, while industrial and miscellaneous permits account for the remainder. The total year-to-date construction value for each permit type is as follows: Commercial: $47 million Industrial: $0.005 million Institutional: $4.5 million Residential: $195 million Miscellaneous: $0.7 million At the end of December 2012, the total annual construction value of building permits for the Edmonton region was $4.8 billion. The value of construction within the City of Edmonton represented 71 per cent of the total amount. This is up from the five-year annual average of 65 per cent (2007-2011).

The total building permit construction value for 2012 was $3.4 billion. This is up 21 per cent from the annual construction value in 2011 ($2.8 billion) and up 34 per cent from the five-year average (2007-2011: $2.6 billion). The largest increases in construction value were experienced in the final five months of 2012. This trend seems to be continuing into 2013.

This is up 40 per cent compared to February 2012 ($237 million) and up 68 per cent compared to the five-year monthly average ($198 million). It is up 34 per cent from the previous month, January 2012 ($247 million).

The year-to-date construction value for commercial is up 51 per cent, residential is up 47 per cent, institutional is down 66 per cent, and industrial is down 79 per cent compared to 2012. September 2013
Institutional permits have the highest increase in year-to-date construction value. This is the result of a permit issued in March 2013 with construction value of $480 million. The year-to-date construction value for institutional is up 191 per cent, residential is up 21 per cent, commercial is down 12 per cent, and industrial is down 60 per cent compared to 2012. The total year-to-date construction value for each permit type is as follows: • Commercial: $553 million • Industrial: $30 million • Institutional: $527 million • Residential: $1,918 million • Miscellaneous: $12 million At the end of August 2013, the total annual construction value of building permits for the Edmonton region was $3,696 million. The value of construction within the City of Edmonton represented 72 per cent of the total amount. This is up from the five-year annual average of 67 per cent (20082012). The high construction value in March 2013 is the main driver of the increase in Edmonton market share.
