Introduction Definition of cholesterol Cholesterol is a type of fat that is essential for the normal functioning of the body. It is produced by the liver and is also found in various foods, such as meat, eggs, and dairy products. Cholesterol is vital for the formation of cell membranes, the production of certain hormones and bile acids, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. The desirable range for total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL, while LDL cholesterol should be less than 100 mg/dL and HDL cholesterol should be greater than 40 mg/dL for men and greater than 50 mg/dL for women.
