Escape to Ras Al Khaimah

At the time of writing this column, we are in the midst of an epidemic that is affecting the whole world and we are living through unprecedented times. It has closed bars, restaurants, nightclubs, concerts and of course sport and we are feeling the full effect as one of the 71 remaining clubs in the EFL.

Make no mistake, these are tough times. The professional game has been suspended until at least the end of April and I think we are all expecting that to be extended further. The conclusion of the Premier League, EFL and National League right now is still up in the air as the law makers made the difficult choice to null and void any division below that level.

We very much want our season to finish. And not because we are in a good position in the league, but because it is very much important for the integrity of our game moving forward. Whether that happens behind closed doors or in front of supporters is very much a decision that changes every day due to the ongoing crisis.

For someone like me that lives and breathes football, it is tough. It is tough to be at home. It is tough without sport. However, I, like everyone else, know that my duty is to stay indoors and I urge everyone else to do the same so that we can beat this virus and get back to some form of normality.

I think most supporters recognise that football plays a massive part in their lives. They might complain about a performance or a result, but they do so because they care. When their football club is not involved, they miss it and they miss it more than ever right now.

We are fortunate at Peterborough United that we have three co-owners who care deeply about their football club and they will do all they can to make sure we come back stronger. Some clubs won’t be so lucky and I fear what the picture will be like when we do eventually get back going.

However, football is not the focus right now. Health is. We need to fight together to beat this virus and hopefully my next column will have a more rosier picture.
