I am writing this column as we are about to enter April and you know at this point you are entering the business end of the season – a season I might add like no other. In all my years in the game, I have never known anything like it and credit to everyone involved at the 72 EFL clubs for remaining in business despite no crowds, no commercial revenue and no real help.
This year is my 25th at Peterborough United so it would be wonderful to mark that milestone with promotion to the Championship. Darren Ferguson and his management staff have done a superb job battling against all the odds to get the team into a position where all they have to do is finish what they have started, but we know it will not be as simple as that.
It has been relentless. Games on Saturday, Tuesday and Saturday have become the norm. Credit has to go to the Fitness and Sports Science team for putting into operation a plan that was put together all the way back in the summer.
25 years at a football club is a long time. I have been manager, owner, secretary, director of football – in fact probably the only job I haven’t done in this period of time is centre forward. Thankfully, we have been blessed with them over the years with Jonson Clarke-Harris on track to become the third successive Posh striker to win the Golden Boot.
Following in the footsteps of Ivan Toney was always going to be incredibly challenging but to notch 25 league goals with nine goals to play and 27 in all competitions is a tremendous return. He has been ably supported in the goals front by Sammie Szmodics, who now has 12 in all competitions.
Jack Marriott, Ivan Toney and Craig Mackail-Smith have all finished on top of the goalscoring charts in recent seasons with Britt Assombalonga also prolific in his one campaign here. It is testament to the hard work behind the scenes to keep unearthing these front men – I may have a small role to play in that!
Away from Peterborough United, the Premier League looks like a one-horse race with Manchester City way in front while in the Championship it looks like Norwich City are set for an immediate return after an excellent campaign under their German manager.
Our near neighbours Cambridge United have been leading the way in League Two with Paul Mullin breaking a club record for his goal return so far. They have even named a stand after him at the Abbey Stadium, so he must be doing something right.
As we reach the end of the 2020-2021 campaign, it is only right to praise the supporters because they have suffered more than anyone this year, not being able to cheer their side on from their seat in the stadium. We hope and pray that next season we can welcome them all back with open arms.
