I think the Euros is probably what everybody needed in this country after the last 18 months that we have had to endure through the pandemic. It has brought smiles to faces and it has provided wonderful entertainment from start to finish, not to mention many shocks in the process and I am not talking about England beating Germany.
Football has always brought people together but I think this year more than any other year, it has played a vital role. At the time of writing this column, I have no idea who will go on and win the tournament but at this stage, I believe football is the winner and I know my former player Jimmy Bullard has coined that phrase on Soccer AM for years, but it really is an accurate assessment.
At Peterborough United, we have been busy with our recruitment for the new Sky Bet Championship season, and we have been pleased with our business. I know the fixture release day is exciting for supporters as they look to plan their year and I personally believe the set of games we have to look forward too is brilliant.
We start with a trip to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town before welcoming Wayne Rooney and his Derby County side to the Weston Homes Stadium. I am sure, rules permitting, that will be a sell out and with West Bromwich Albion also visiting in August, it makes for a tough start.
We have a home tie in the first round of the Carabao Cup against Plymouth Argyle to look forward to in the first week of the campaign too so there is plenty of action coming your way! I have been astounded by the backing of our supporters, they have been first class throughout this period and to sell as many season tickets as we have done is testament to how loyal they are.
I can’t wait for full stadiums again. It was tough playing behind closed doors, particularly when you are successful because you feel you miss out on those raw celebrations, but we know the supporters were with us, watching on their laptop screens and listening on the radio. We can’t wait to welcome you back.
Enjoy the summer, whatever it holds!
