It seems bizarre to suggest, but this time next year, the country will be preparing for a World Cup! I have to be honest, I don’t quite see how this is going to fit into the schedule and when a tournament as big as the World Cup starts to become a challenge, you know you have a few problems.

I have no issue with the competition going to a new country, although, like so many others, there are reservations about this particular location, however, what I am struggling to get my head round is how this particular World Cup is going to affect major European nations in terms of their domestic calendars.

The proposals I have seen suggest that the Premier League and the Championship, of which we are one of the teams competing in, will break for around a month in November and begin again on Boxing Day.

That is an incredibly long time without domestic football. I know that it is highly unlikely that any of our players at Peterborough United will be involved in the World Cup, so what do we do? Do we just give the players some time off? Do they do another pre-season? How do you keep your players fit? There are so many unanswered questions. Then you put yourselves in the shoes of Premier League clubs. Say England get to the final against Brazil. Do the players just return to the clubs straight after the final and are expected to be at peak performance for a Boxing Day fixture?

How do the Premier League clubs prepare for those fixtures with players halfway round the world? It just doesn’t make any sense to me. And then you hear that Arsene Wenger wants a World Cup every two years. I am not a fan of that myself and I love football!

Playing in a World Cup is the pinnacle of any players’ career, but I feel that is because it is over four years – you work towards it. Every two years, I think just belittles it a little bit. You look forward to a major competition like that, just like the Olympics.

It will be interesting to see how that pans out over the next few months and we look forward to seeing more detail about how the calendar is going to look.
