SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES SUSAN DENTZER

President & CEO The Network for Excellence in Health Innovation Susan Dentzer is the incoming President and Chief Executive Officer of the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation, a not-for-profit organization that seeks intelligent ways to advance health and improve health care at sustainable costs. With offices in Washington, DC, Cambridge, MA, and San Francisco, CA, NEHI represents more than 120 organizations across the spectrum of health and health care. One of the nation’s most respected health and health policy thought leaders and a frequent speaker and commentator on television and radio, including PBS and NPR, Dentzer previously served as senior policy adviser to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest philanthropy focused on health and health care in the United States. She also was formerly editor-inchief of the policy journal Health Affairs, and the on-air Health Correspondent for the PBS NewsHour. Dentzer wrote and hosted the 2015 PBS documentary, Reinventing American Healthcare, focusing on the innovations pioneered by the Geisinger Health System and spread to health systems across the nation. Dentzer is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) and also serves on the academy’s Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice. She is also an elected member of the Council on Foreign Relations; a fellow of the National Academy of Social Insurance; and a fellow of the Hastings Center, a nonpartisan bioethics research institute. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Rescue Committee, a leading global humanitarian organization; is a public member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties, which assists 24 medical specialty boards in the ongoing evaluation and certification of physicians; and is a member of the board of directors of the Public Health Institute, the nonprofit organization addressing public health issues and solutions nationwide. She also is a member of the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, the RAND Health Board of Advisors, and the March of Dimes national advisory board. Dentzer graduated from Dartmouth, is a trustee emerita of the college, and chaired the Dartmouth Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2004. She has served as a member of the Board of Overseers of Dartmouth Medical School for more than two decades. Dentzer holds an honorary master’s degree from Dartmouth and an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Muskingum University. She, her husband, and their three children live in the Washington, DC area. Dentzer is a compelling, thoughtful, and entertaining speaker widely recognized for her ability to communicate clearly with both expert audiences and the general public. She speaks widely and also is known as a gifted interviewer and moderator, and is at home in a variety of settings, including corporate and academic audiences.

Chair, National Health Care and Life Sciences Practice Steering Committee Epstein Becker & Green George B. Breen is Chair of the firm’s National Health Care and Life Sciences Practice Steering Committee and a member of the firm’s Board of Directors. He is a Member of the firm in its Healthcare and Life Sciences and Litigation practices. He represents skilled nursing and assisted living communities, home health agencies, hospital systems, health care providers, manufacturers and suppliers before courts and administrative tribunals at the federal and state levels, including challenges to regulatory actions and disputes under government contracts A litigator for over 25 years, Mr. Breen serves as the Chair of the American Health Lawyers Association’s Health Care Liability and Litigation Practice Group. In 2016, he was selected as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a trial lawyer honorary society. Mr. Breen has been a member of a variety of professional organizations and is a Past President and member of the Board of Directors of the District of Columbia Defense Lawyers Association. He is a frequent lecturer and author on issues related to health care fraud and abuse, corporate compliance, and trial practice and has served as a member of Law 360’s Health Editorial Advisory Board. His commentaries have appeared in newspapers and other publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Modern Healthcare, Bloomberg and Reuters. Mr. Breen has earned an “AV Preeminent” Peer Review Rating by Martindale-Hubbell, signifying the highest level of professional excellence. He has been selected by The American Lawyer and Martindale-Hubbell for inclusion in Top Rated Lawyers (2014 -2016) for Health Care Law. He has also been selected for inclusion in Washington, DC Super Lawyers (2012 to 2016) and The Legal 500 United States (2014-2015). In 2010, Mr. Breen was named an “Outstanding Healthcare Litigator” by Nightingale’s Healthcare News, one of only 10 lawyers across the country selected for this honor. Mr. Breen also leads Epstein Becker Green’s Pro Bono Committee in the firm’s Washington, DC, office and in 2013 he was named a Pro Bono Champion by the American Health Lawyers Association in recognition of his efforts in providing pro bono legal services.

Managing Partner, Chair, Government Affairs & Public Policy Practice Group Akerman Richard L. Spees is the Akerman Government Affairs & Public Policy Practice Group Chair and serves as the office managing partner of the Washington, D.C. office. He has over 25 years of experience representing clients before the federal government. Rick represents a wide range of public and private clients including cities, counties, transit properties, science centers, educational institutions, corporations, and hospital systems. Before starting his legal practice, Rick served in a number of positions in the U.S. Senate, including three years as the Staff Director of the Senate Commerce, Justice, and State and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee. He also served on the Senate Judiciary Committee and as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Paul Laxalt (R-Nevada).

RICH KARLGAARD Publisher Forbes

Entrepreneur-turned-publisher, columnist, author, television commentator, private investor and board director, Rich Karlgaard offers a unique vantage point on the trends driving the business and investment climates. His insights help audiences see the global marketplace with new eyes. Karlgaard is the publisher of Forbes magazine, where he also writes a biweekly column, “Innovation Rules”, known for its witty and honest assessment of technology trends and current business issues. He’s a regular panelist on cable news’ most popular business show, Forbes on FOX, and is a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal’s oped page. A successful entrepreneur and past winner of Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year Award,” Karlgaard understands firsthand the difficulties of navigating in today’s business climate and the opportunities available to those who have the courage to reach out for them. His assessment of technology trends, U.S. and global economic forces, and current business and political issues gives audiences solid insights they can use to make better business and investment decisions. With a remarkable ability to connect with audiences, Karlgaard shows his quick mind and even quicker sense of humor during lively, unscripted question and answer periods. Unfailingly gracious, Karlgaard puts forth his insights for others to consider in a way that helps them see the events that are changing their world— especially the impact of Washington politics—on business and innovation. SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES KATHERINE BAICKER PhD

C. Boyden Gray Professor of Health Economics Harvard University Katherine Baicker, PhD, is C. Boyden Gray Professor of Health Economics and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and an elected member of the Institute of Medicine. Professor Baicker serves as a Commissioner on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission; as Chair of the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission; on the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Health Advisers; as a Director of Eli Lilly; on the Editorial Boards of Health Affairs, the Journal of Health Economics, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives; and as past Chair of the Board of Directors of AcademyHealth. From 2005-2007, she served as a Senateconfirmed Member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, where she played a leading role in the development of health policy. Professor Baicker’s research focuses primarily on the factors that drive the distribution, generosity, and effectiveness of public and private health insurance, with a particular focus on health insurance finance and the effect of reforms on the distribution and quality of care. Her research has been published in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Health Affairs, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and has been featured in outlets such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and National Public Radio. She is currently one of the leaders of a research program investigating the many effects of expanding health insurance coverage in the context of a randomized Medicaid expansion in Oregon. She received her BA in economics from Yale and her PhD in economics from Harvard. She has served on the faculty of the Department of Public Policy in the School of Public Affairs at the University of California, Los Angeles; the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago; the Economics Department at Dartmouth College; and the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences and the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.
