SPEAKER FEATURE FORMER AIRBNB EXECUTIVE JONATHAN MILDENHALL TACKLES THE POWER OF PURPOSE To be effective marketers, businesses must ask themselves who they are and what drives them. For marketing virtuoso and former Airbnb chief marketing officer Jonathan Mildenhall, the answers to these questions define a business’s purpose. He will elaborate on their importance during a keynote focused on brand, culture, and the power of purpose at the 2018 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference in San Diego. Defining a clear purpose is no mere intellectual exercise, Mildenhall believes. It is a competitive necessity that guides businesses during bad times as well as good times. It is also critically important for individuals, who must consider both the needs of their current employers and the legacies they want to leave behind. “In this keynote I will help unpack several factors that ensure purpose-driven companies outperform their competition,” Mildenhall explained. “I will also explain how to make purpose personal and how to focus an individual’s work to further their own purpose.” Mildenhall has extensive experience helping brands define their purpose and translate it into effective marketing. Before joining Airbnb, he served as a vice president, then senior vice president, at the Coca-Cola Company. While the two companies are very different, the 131-year-old Coca-Cola and 9-year-old Airbnb are both true to their brand purpose, Mildenhall told a 2017 gathering at Airbnb’s European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. Coca-Cola sees itself as “the antidote to PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT modern-day woes,” he said, while Airbnb markets “a world in which 7.5 FOR SENIOR LIVING BUSINESSES, billion people can belong anywhere.” Purposes that can be articulated clearly and quickly by anyone within an organization are no less important to senior-focused businesses and the individuals who work for them, Mildenhall said.

YOU MUST ENGAGE YOUR COMMUNITY AND HAVE THEM COLLABORATE ON THE MARKETING AND STORYTELLING AGENDA

“It all starts with defining a compelling company or brand purpose that transcends the business model and reaches into culture,” he said. “Then you need to inspire all stakeholders around that thinking through creative storytelling. Finally, and this is particularly important for senior living businesses, you must engage your community and have them collaborate on the marketing and storytelling agenda.”

Purpose-driven marketing is also invaluable to senior living businesses looking to recruit and retain talented staff who have their own values and purposes. In fact, it may be even more important for senior-oriented businesses than for other businesses to show that their purpose and values are compatible with those of their employees and prospective employees. “Doing good in the world isn’t just about being worthy or staid,” Mildenhall said. “Increasingly with great companies like TOMS Shoes and [eyewear maker] Warby Parker, doing good can be cool and culturally relevant. The senior living industry has a huge opportunity to represent the vitality and spirit that is emerging across the industry.

Join us at the 2018 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference to learn more from Mildenhall on the power of purpose and making your organization stand out.

SPEAKER FEATURE BRUCE TULGAN, LEADING EXPERT ON LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT, ADDRESSES GENERATIONAL DIVIDE IN THE WORKPLACE Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference speaker Bruce Tulgan, founder and chairman of RainmakerThinking, has been tracking and researching generational shift in more than 400 organizations for about a quarter-century. “The grown-ups are leaving,” said Tulgan. “They’re taking with them collective skills, knowledge, institutional memory, and the last vestiges of the work ethic.” One of the primary disconnects is among baby boomers, who are accustomed to putting in their time and working their way up the ladder; Generation X’ers, who are entrepreneurial and used to going it alone; and millennials, stereotyped as being “entitled” and needing constant reinforcement and rewards. But Tulgan flips that perception: The fact is, older workers are becoming more like millennials in their attitudes toward their work life and advancements—thinking more like free agents, for instance. And millennials don’t have greater wants and needs, they have greater expectations—of themselves as well as of others. They want to hit the ground running, start making changes, and start making a difference.

OLDER WORKERS ARE BECOMING MORE LIKE MILLENNIALS IN THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARD THEIR WORK LIFE AND ADVANCEMENTS

They’ll be your best and hardest workers, Tulgan says, but there are two catches: They won’t work for vague promises of long-term rewards, and they want someone to be keeping score.

Join us at the 2018 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference to learn more from Tulgan on fostering leadership and developing effective management strategies.

TULGAN’S STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS THE CHANGING WORKPLACE DYNAMIC ⊲⊲ Beat the “development investment paradox.” Unbundle complex roles and tasks, and feed in training gradually, one task and responsibility at a time, as rewards. Naturally, basic skills to do the job will have to be taught—but “broad, transferable skills should be a reward that you help people earn.”

⊲⊲ Cultivate flexible retention to retain the advantages of older employees. Save perks like flexible scheduling for older and experienced employees to evade the development investment paradox. Superstars get to earn more flexibility.

⊲⊲ Concentrate not just on knowledge transfer but on wisdom transfer. Turn wisdom into a tangible asset that the organization controls by offering opportunities for older employees to become mentors and consultants.

10 argentum.org/conference

⊲⊲ Be selective in hiring (even when you’re in a scarcity environment). One very good person is worth more to the business than two or three mediocre people. The key is avoiding an environment where “low performers hide out and high performers leave.”

⊲⊲ Create a work culture by design, not by default. Value high performance, and bring in human resources as a strategic partner to ensure the culture is expressed in every aspect of the workplace. The culture will then drive recruitment and retention.

⊲⊲ Try boot-camp onboarding. Use onboarding to connect people to mission, teach them the organization’s values, and create a bonding experience that makes them part of an elite crew.

“The value of the EDLI is that after three days, an executive director goes home with more tools in their toolbox than they had before. We get them at 30,000 feet, to really invest in them as leaders, get them out of the weeds for a few days, but we also balance that with some very tactical information that they can take back and have implemented with their teams within a day or two, it’s just an investment in them.”

— Tana Gall, CEO, Blue Harbor Senior Living; Co-Dean of EDLI
