atural stone is a collective name for thousands of different types of stone throughout the world, many of which are formed by rivers, volcanoes or tectonics. The most common place homeowners and builders utilize natural stone is on countertops or flooring. However natural stone can be useful in many other areas inside and outside the home to add personality and beauty. While there are a variety of types of stone to choose from, each unique in its kind, certain natural stones are more useful in certain parts of the home than others. Perhaps the most popular natural stone choice for countertops because of its heat, scratch and stain resistance, it is a great choice whether you are designing a sleek, modern bathroom or a more country farmhouse look. Marble. Softer and more absorbent than granite, marble is still tough enough for any application in your home. It is considered one of the most luxurious and elegant natural stones. It is very porous and susceptible to etching and staining so regular sealing and special care will ensure it looking its best. Available in an assortment of colors, marble is best suited for backsplashes, pastry surfaces, floors, tub surrounds, vanity tops or as a feature wall in any room of your home to add that extra wow factor. Quartz. This is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s continental crust, after feldspar. Quartz is scratch resistant and has built in anti-microbial protection against bacteria, mold and mildew buildup, which makes this an ideal stone for kitchen countertops, showers and tub surrounds. Its non-porous surface, unique blend of beauty and easy care makes quartz an exceptional choice for any lifestyle. Onyx. Admired for its translucency and beauty, onyx can be magnified by a backlight. Although most commonly known as a jet black stone, onyx colors also range from white, to honey colored neutrals, to stunning blues, greens, reds and gold. types of stone, making it more vulnerable to both chemical and abrasive deterioration, this stone is more suitable for low traffic areas or walls. Limestone. With a variety of textures, this stone is formed by the shells of marine animals. Hard, dense pieces take a polish while softer ones do not. Even though limestone is a strong stone, it is easy to stain, especially from acidic products such as tea, citrus or juice. A cutting board is recommended if using as a countertop. For the interior of the home, limestone works well for bathroom surfaces, kitchen floors and entryways. However, limestone is also an excellent choice for exterior applications such as pavers to landscaping or around window sills. Limestone weathers naturally over time, but its appearance actually improves with age. Travertine. A type of limestone, travertine receives more pressure and heat from the earth’s crust. It has a porous surface, so it is prone to etching if exposed to acidic materials. Holes give this stone a spongelike appearance. It comes in four main finish options: honed, which has a matte finish; polished, which gives a shiny appearance; tumbled; and brushed, which both leave textured finishes. Travertine is most commonly used for flooring, although it’s possible to use it on countertops, walls and shower areas. Slate. Distinctive for its matte surface and cleft pattern, slate often comes in deep greens, blues, grays and purples. Slate is made mostly from clay minerals and mica and is an excellent waterproof stone, which for the interior of the home is ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and wall cladding. Soapstone. Hence the name, this stone gets its soap-like feel from the mineral talc, which it is largely composed of, and is very rich in magnesium. Soapstone is chemically inert, non-reactive to harsh chemicals and extremely dense–even denser than granite. This stone does not stain and liquid will not permeate its surface. However, soapstone is soft and scratches easily. The scratches will create a patina on its surface over time which should be expected after everyday wear. Because soapstone resists high heat, it is the perfect stone choice for kitchen countertops, vanity tops, sinks and fireplace surrounds. o you dread getting your power bill each month, especially in the warm months when you are using more electricity? Are you continually having to endure the heat during the summer months by not utilizing the air conditioning to try and keep your energy bill lower?
