any homeowners have the preconceived notion that all hardwood floors are similar—however, this is definitely not the case. Only floors that meet the most demanding criteria can be recognized as a truly high quality product. When shopping for that perfect hardwood floor, there are certain things that you can look for to ensure that the product is a worthy investment. For example, analyze the boards for consistency. Straight boards should fit together without any variation in thickness, and when put together, the boards should form V joints that are not too deep. This will trap dirt and dust easily, making your floor hard to care for. Additionally, you should analyze the finish of the product. Each board should have a uniform finish, including the joints. The bottom of the joints must be perfectly coated with varnish or it will collect dirt and water, causing your floors to darken prematurely. Finish should be applied in the right amount so that it’s not too thin or too thick, and be sure to check the color consistency from one box to the next. If the wood is stained, make sure the boards match to ensure an even floor color. Another thing to take into consideration is the cutting method. There are two main cutting methods for the hardwood portion of an engineered floor: Rotary peeled, and dry sawn. When a product is rotary peeled, the log is boiled and then peeled using a rotary cut. This is the same method used to make plywood, and the wood reflects repetitive patterns that are similar to plywood. An ultra-thin wear layer can show cracks, nicked corners, and any other imperfections. Yet when a floor is dry sawn, the hardwood is precisely sawn in the desired thickness of the plank. Color variations, uniformity, and the natural grain beauty of the species are preserved with this method, and each board is unique so there are no repetitive patterns. Resurfacing Pools s pool season comes to a close, you may have started to notice some wear and tear on your deck. There is no better time than now to get things back into shape and ready for the beginning of the year. Pool decks can take a beating in Las Vegas—intense sunlight, chemicals dripping on the surface, and calcium from the sprinklers deteriorating and discoloring the texture. An annual evaluation is essential to prolonging the life of your deck. If it has been over five years since you have applied a protective color coat, there is probably discoloration and deterioration. If you want to prolong the life of your pool deck, maintenance is the key. Many homeowners put off repairs because they are afraid of cost.
