ith the warmer season approaching, sweep away those winter cobwebs and refresh your home with a few spring spruce-ups. While some may get overwhelmed with the daunting task of a major cleaning, try these easy tips from Sally Morse, Director of Creative Services at Hunter Douglas, to create a brighter, lighter, more organized home. 1. Clear Away. If cleaning and clearing away the clutter seems overwhelming, Morse has one simple trick to calm the nerves. “Try setting the kitchen timer for 15 minutes per area, like the bedroom closet, pantry or foyer. Telling yourself you’re going to de-clutter the home in one weekend sounds draining,” she says. “Rather, split up the tasks into smaller ones so you stay focused and don’t get lost in the process.” Make a list of all the areas you have to organize and space it out over a few days. 2. Welcome in Springtime Light. One impactful décor change that can easily be made is to update your window treatments. The right window fashions in your home will not only look stylish and beautifully filter light for a glowing room, but also provide a host of practical benefits such as energy-efficiency, UV-protection, sound absorption and more. One of the many suitable options is Hunter Douglas Silhouette® window shadings, which feature soft fabric vanes that rotate for variable light control and privacy that are suspended between two sheer facings to diffuse incoming light and preserve the view. 3. Bring Nature In. As Mother Earth comes to life again it’s a great time to bring that life indoors with easy-to-maintain plants and flowers. Try the cast-iron Japanese perennial, one of the toughest species available. Nearly indestructible, it withstands low light, low humidity and a wide range of temperatures. Also, try adding pastel bouquets of lilac, forsythia and narcissus to spread a cheerful dose of color around the home.

4. Lemony Fresh. Appeal to all five senses with this year’s spring updates. After your initial scrub and, sorting and clearing of clutter, extend that fresh scent by adding a lemon-scented diffuser. You can, of course, easily purchase one, but for a fun DIY project, try creating a citrus diffuser at home. 5. Lighter Linens. For one spring refresher that goes a long way, try brightening up your home with lighter fabrics. This update can awaken nearly every room from the living room, bedroom and bathroom to the kitchen. Morse advises also bringing a soft texture to the window by opting for energysaving Hunter Douglas Duette® Architella® honeycomb shades. These shades offer dozens of color and design choices for a range of high-design possibilities with fabrics that are gentle to the touch as well. With a little work and a few additions, you can happily welcome in the new season with a clean, orderly, beautiful home. There are so many ways to make our homes spring ready. To see a variety of different Hunter Douglas products, you can visit Don's Drapery Service, Inc., an authorized Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery showroom located at 1261 N. Getting Organized

By Kathryn LaBarbera

s space in the family home continues to be a problem, more people are searching for alternatives. The solution is to get organized. Take an inventory of everything you want to store in the space. Determine what you want to keep and get rid of the rest. Once you know what you are going to keep in the space, determine where everything will go. Group similar things together (all shoes or all shirts), and sketch the space to draw a plan. Use all of the available space. Since storage space is hard to come by, it is important to store things neatly and efficiently. Smaller shelves, cubbies, or baskets can make good use of the space where clothes are not hanging in the closet. The last decision you need to make is how you want your organized space to look. Whether you decorate with an art deco flair or are more traditional, it is important to create a space in the look that reflects your style. The hard thing is getting started. Look at your calendar and make a date. If you are having a difficult

ounded in 1924, Stanley Furniture is still distinguished through a bolstered commitment to design leadership and craftsmanship. With a 90-year history of building exceptional wood furniture, Stanley continues to honor their pledge of delivering striking designs, artisan finishes, and superior quality to customers, exceeding all expectations. Now, Stanley is proud to introduce the European Farmhouse collection. European Farmhouse is unique because it feels as though each piece has been gathered over a lifetime of travel and treasure finding—eclectic pieces work effortlessly together without feeling too matched. Bringing luxurious lines to rustic materials and Old World artistry to modern-day functionality, European Farmhouse is both old and new, allowing the collection to serve nearly any decorating style. The brilliance lies in the elegant shapes, generous scale, fresh palette of finishes, and mix of materials. Crafted from Dutch white cedar solids with veneers of Dutch white cedar and ash burl, European Farmhouse features four distinct finishes: Terrain. A rich, hand-waxed coffee tone with artisanal distressing. Blonde. A more natural and close-to-the-wood matte finish, complete with a cream-colored accent glaze. Chalkboard. A sophisticated dusty-black option. Temps. An artistic blend of French grey and cream. Additionally, antique brass and antique pewter add to the aged industrial feel of each piece. It’s All in the Details By: Jessica Anslow

I

s there a place in your home that maybe just doesn’t feel right, almost as if something was missing? You are not alone; many people feel this way and don’t know how to fix it. The client featured in this article requested a space with new life and personality. They felt it was missing something and wanted their home to feel complete. In order to have a beautifully finished room, one that will warmly invite you in, it’s important to remember to romance the room to its fullest! Creating the ambiance in this space was accomplished using the perfect combination of elements. To update the flooring and warm up the room, designer Vickie Daeley installed engineered wood with various size planks, while keeping the clients’ existing table anchored with a beautifully hand-carved area rug. Using the location of the dining room to their advantage, Vickie added a window to let the natural light flood into the space, while a new lighting plan was developed to create ambiance. Infusing personality into their space was very important to these clients. Changing the fabrics on the existing chairs to warm rich colors brought life back into the wood tone of their table, while complimenting the windows with soft silk fabric made all the difference in this setting. To expand on the existing architectural elements, Vickie chose complimentary paint colors to highlight the recessed ceiling. With accessories and a delicate light fixture, they were able to add the “jewelry” to complete this space and make it an elegant yet inviting place for family to gather. Do you have questions like this and need help from an interior designer? Vickie Daeley and her design team at Interior Affairs have started a video series of “Commonly Asked Questions,” and would love to help! You can call 714-970-8000 or 949640-5000 for an appointment, and follow them on social media to watch for the newest videos in their series. ARCHITECTURAL ORNAMENTATION The Difference is in the Details

hen it comes to creating a rich and elegant environment, whether indoors or out, the most significant aspects can be found in the details. When you are ready for a new look, you might not need to completely remodel an entire space from top to bottom. In fact, architectural ornamentation is one of the most convenient and successful ways to reinvent a room, cabinet, ceiling, wall or more. Architectural ornamentation can transform any ordinary bathroom into a lavish lair fit for a Greek Goddess. You can give an out dated kitchen the luxury of old world class, dramatically improving the ambiance of the heart of your home. Or, add a touch of class to your ceilings and extend some artistic beauty to all areas of the room. Exclusive modular systems allow you to pick and choose parts to create your own custom masterpiece; which simplifies the design process. Offering a rich look of wood without the high price, resin ornamentation is a superior product in many ways. Resin is flexible and can be used on radius curves, opening up design options that cannot be duplicated using traditional methods. Resin is non-porous which makes it the material of choice for external use. Resin can also be painted or stained just like wood, so you can have the exact look you desire.

It’s Time For An Upgrade How to Modify Your Old Entertainment Center

Before

26

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • MAY/JUNE 2015

d

o you need to breathe some life into your existing entertainment center? Professionals can modify old furniture systems designed for analog TVs to proudly accommodate the latest flat panel sets. How to modify an old entertainment center that was designed for a tabletop TV Tabletop TVs are extremely heavy, weighing as much as 350 pounds, and very deep, commonly 22-26". Deep TVs result in deep furniture. A temptation when upgrading these types of furniture systems is to simply set a new flat panel TV inside. However, flat TVs tend to get lost in the depth of large entertainment centers. Further, the screen of the flat panel ends up being recessed several inches from the front of the furniture, significantly reducing the viewing angle. The right way to upgrade your entertainment center takes full advantage of the new slim TVs. First, professionals will construct a false back wall to be installed in the TV section of your furniture, reducing the depth of the TV section and preventing you from seeing through to the back of the cabinet. Second, a pulloutarticulating arm is mounted to the back wall. Finally, the flat panel TV is removed from its stand and mounted to the pullout arm. How to modify an old entertainment center that was designed for a floor standing projection TV Because projection TVs are much taller than their tabletop counterparts, the retrofit is adjusted accordingly. In addition to a false back wall and bracket, these modifications include a new TV credenza. The credenza is slipped into place between the two existing towers to provide the foundation for the new flat panel TV as well as additional new storage. In most cases, the color and style of your existing furniture can be matched so the credenza looks like it was original to the system. Diamond Case is a full service electronics retailer and cabinet maker. They can provide a complete modification including the furniture, bracket, and television. They also produce new systems from scratch. To find out what it would cost to modify your furniture, you can call them toll-free at 800-616-5354 or visit www.diamondcase.com ONLINE AT ORANGECOUNTYLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

Keep Your Home Safe from Termites

S

ubterranean and drywood termites cause billions of dollars in damages each year in the United States. Unfortunately to homeowners, termites can go undetected for years and cause significant structural damage. Subterranean Termites. These are the most widespread and destructive type of termites. Because they need a moist environment to survive, these termites typically live underground in the soil. These infestations require soil treatment and removal of any conditions that make your home conducive to infestations. Upon a complete termite inspection of your home, your inspector will advise you of any conditions that make your home vulnerable to current or future subterranean termite infestations. Drywood Termites. When a colony of drywood termites invades your home, the damage can quickly eat up your home equity. Treatment methods can vary based upon the extent or location of the infestation. Local or spot treatment is recommended for minor and easily accessible infestations and you are not required to vacate your home. An insecticide is injected into the channels that the termites have created or requires mixing a foaming agent with the insecticide to fill a void area. Using natural insecticide/fungicide products with sodium borate is ideal for local treatment of drywood termites as it kills the termites on contact and penetrates into the wood, leaving a borate crystal barrier behind serving as a wood preservative and future barrier to termites. Sodium borate is a natural mineral used for many commercial household uses such as water softening, laundry detergent, and candles.

30

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • MAY/JUNE 2015

When a drywood termite infestation has extended into inaccessible areas, the only method to ensure 100% elimination of drywood termites is whole-structure fumigation. The fumigation process is a gas that fills the structure, and then slowly dissipates during the aeration process. When the tarp is removed, there is no surface residue left behind. Similar to helium leaving a balloon, you don’t have to worry about dishes, linens, clothing, or other items afterward. Although this method requires preparation and vacating the home, you can return with confidence that the termites have been eradicated. An annual maintenance plan can provide homeowners with the peace of mind that a trained professional will be inspecting their house annually and treating any early indications of termites. Annual maintenance plans can slow down the progression of termites into inaccessible areas that require costly fumigation and wood repairs. In addition to treating termite conditions, homeowners must correct damaged wood to prevent termites from easily returning to the structure. A-1 Bonded Termite, Inc. is family-owned and has been serving the community for over 30 years. Their knowledgeable termite inspectors are not paid on commission ensuring customers will not be oversold. Take Back Your Backyard With Motorized Exterior Awnings

w

hen you invest in a home, you are buying more than just an interior. Think about it—if you didn’t like spending time outside enjoying the view and your beautiful surroundings, then you could have just bought a condominium. There’s a reason why you bought your beautiful home. The real question is: are you using it to its full potential? One of the main issues that might be keeping you and your family from completely utilizing your backyard is the weather. While basking in the sun for a few minutes can be nice, there quickly comes a point when it simply becomes overwhelming. What if you had the luxury to spend time outside whenever you want, whether it’s day or night, and always feel comfortable? Retractable shading systems allow you to finally take control of your backyard. Enhance your outdoor living experience by creating the functional space you have always wanted. One of the best features of innovative motorized awnings is that they don’t change the look of your home. Instead, they can enhance your backyard by adding color, more versatility and creating a new usable space. When an awning is retractable, you can have shade when you need it and sun when you want it. Therefore, depending on the weather and your needs, the control is totally in your hands!

The Continental Patio Awning Retracted

An awning can be either deployed or retracted. While deployed, you can sit back, relax and enjoy your outdoor surroundings in comfort while being protected from the sun and other natural elements based on the system you choose. Watch the kids play in the pool and enjoy your backyard in the shade without worrying about getting too much sun. Relax by your outdoor fire pit at night and soak in the ambiance of your stunning landscape in the moonlight. When an awning is retracted, it disappears from sight and doesn’t change the look of your exterior décor. Essentially, a retractable shade system helps protect both you and your home at all times. When retracted, you can help protect your investment. Invest in your outdoor living spaces, reclaim your space and start appreciating every aspect that your backyard has to offer. he louvered opening roof system is constructed of Zincalume louvers that rotate from completely closed to 155° open, by use of a small motor. It is safe to use and incredibly easy to operate. The motor is powered by a 12 volt transformer. A portable-remote controls the operation of the louvers. The opening roof system offers many benefits, including: Versatility. It can be built as a patio roof or commercial cover. It can also be installed flat or pitched. Sun control. The louvers can be positioned during winter months to cast the sun’s natural warmth into rooms to save on energy costs. During the summer, they can be moved to block direct sunlight to protect your home from unwanted solar heating. Ventilation. During the summer months, a place in the shade is where you want to be. Your Barbeque Shined Like New?

T

here is nothing better than a home cooked meal on the grill, especially when the weather starts to warm up and it’s hard not to take the food and entertaining outdoors. However, if you have recently found yourself staring at that dirty barbeque, wondering whether or not it’s even safe to cook on, you are definitely not alone. Eventually, all barbeques start to accumulate grime and grease, no matter how hard you scrub it. Both the grill and the exterior of a barbeque will inevitably lose that like-new luster, and this can happen fairly quickly if you are a regular griller. If you just can’t seem to get things clean, then the time has come to call the professionals for a barbeque makeover. Using a professional-grade steam cleaner, your barbeque will be sanitized with a deep cleaning that helps clear any stubborn grease and residue from your burners. This ensures an even flame as well as enhanced grill performance, completely eliminating hot spots. A professionally cleaned barbeque will not only extend the life of your unit, it will also ensure that your grilled favorites cook better and taste fresher. Additionally, your rejuvenated barbeque will be able to prevent rust, as well as ash, soot, and grease build-up. Keep your backyard looking beautiful and your food tasting delicious!

ARE YOU MAKING

VALUE A PRIOITY?

W

hen it comes to making a purchase, whether you are buying something as small as a new chair or as large as a kitchen remodel, people tend to gravitate towards the lowest price. The fact of the matter is, who doesn’t want to save some money? There is an exciting thrill that comes with the concept of getting a bargain that seems to be ingrained in all human beings. However, succumbing to that thrill without giving your purchase any critical thought might end up being a choice that can completely negate your savings later on down the line. Here’s why. A low price tag almost always equals a low-quality item or service, no matter how you look at it. In order to achieve such a low cost on something, it’s almost guaranteed that corners have been cut to get there. During the recession, many people got used to low prices because businesses were simply trying to survive. But now, it’s crucial to recognize that the economy is showing stable improvement. Because of this, if you are a smart shopper, you

36

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • MAY/JUNE 2015

have most likely started to become extremely cautious of the price that seems suspiciously low. Also, low prices oftentimes reflect a cheaply crafted product from overseas that can result in a short life span. The solution is simple: do the research before jumping at the sight of an attractive price tag. Always remember to prioritize both value and quality way above bargain because these are the factors that will guide you along the path to choosing a sound investment. Pay attention to the aspects that prove a company cares, such as customer service, honesty, and having pride in their product. Make sure you have an actual relationship with a company to ensure they are going to be there in a few years to take care of any future work. Information and education go a long way, and you will always experience peace of mind knowing that you made a confident decision. In the end, the lowest price more often than not becomes the highest price—it just might take some time to get there.

Smile with Confidence and for Success!

T

oday in our appearance-driven society, particularly here in Southern California, it has become more important for men and women to present themselves in an attractive manner. It is a common belief that people who are more attractive obtain success in their personal and professional lives easier and more often then those who are less attractive. Attractiveness is comprised of both physical and psychological factors. The psychological aspect is when one feels happy and self-confident about their appearance or feels secure and confident about the way others perceive their appearance. The physical factors include body shape, hair, eyes, mouth, dress, and personal hygiene. Over the last few decades studies have been performed to determine which of these factors are deemed most important when determining physical attractiveness. The conclusion was that the number one factor is the lips and teeth. With this being said, it is logical to assume that creating an attractive smile would be one of the most important priorities for those desiring to improve their physical attractiveness. There is a specific protocol that should be carried out by the patient and dentist before actually engaging in a smile makeover. This includes a detailed consultation, computer

There are also other cosmetic procedures that your dentist should discuss as possible treatment options, such as orthodontics and periodontal (gum) therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. As with plastic surgery, anyone desiring cosmetic dentistry should seek out a well-trained and experienced practitioner before committing to any cosmetic therapy. This can be done by obtaining referrals from patients who have had successful smile makeovers or by going to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry website at www.aacd.com to find a dentist who focuses primarily on cosmetic dentistry. With many new material, techniques, and treatments available today, patients are able to attain a long-term beautiful, metal-free, and biologically healthy smile. Examples of these therapies include: 1) All ceramic restorations: Crowns (caps), bridges and veneers can be fabricated utilizing modern ceramics to create one’s desired appearance while still maintaining the After Therapy(Using implant/crown & Veneers) strength required for function and longevity. The majority of these restorations can be designed virtually, manufactured using the latest CAD/CAM technology and allows the dentist to preserve more of the patient’s natural tooth structure—all while being metal free 2) Implant therapy: Today the treatment of choice when replacing a missing tooth/teeth is the placement of implants with the desired restoration attached to the implant. When designed, planned and placed correctly, implant/restorative therapy can result in an extremely natural result and normal Before Therapy function that can last for decades!

Reshape Your Body in 20 Minutes! By John Colman

When Diane Rand reached age 50, she got concerned that her weight was slowly creeping higher and her clothes were feeling too tight. As a practicing physician in San Diego, she knew the diagnosis. “Your muscles atrophy as you age, and this slows down the metabolism,” says Rand. “I knew it would keep getting worse if I didn’t correct it.” The antidote? Effective weight training. But, she’d never lifted weights before. Plus, her fulltime job as a physician as well as her family life left little time in her schedule for exercise. Fortunately, Diane read an article about “slow-motion” strength training, a revolutionary new exercise method promising a firmer, stronger, more shapely body from just two 20-minute training sessions per week. Even though the time efficiency and results sounded almost too good to be true, she decided to enroll with a personal trainer at The Perfect Workout, a local company with dozens of private fitness studios specializing in this unique approach. Right away she noticed immediate increases in her muscle tone and energy. After several months she’d also dropped one to two clothing sizes and was fitting into clothes which used to be too small. “My trainer pushes me in a safe way, and I walk away feeling great after each session,” says Diane. “This is the wave of the future.”

Lean Muscles—The Key To Reshaping Your Body The Perfect Workout’s trainers encourage clients to build lean muscle tissue, which increases the body’s metabolism, burning extra calories even while you’re sleeping. Many people—especially women—have a fear of “bulking up” like a

bodybuilder if they were to start strength training. In reality, if you’re older than 25, it’s much more likely that too little muscle is the problem rather than too much muscle. In their book Biomarkers: The 10 Keys to Prolonging Vitality , William Evans, Ph.D., and Irwin Rosenberg, M.D., show the research demonstrating that adults who don’t strength train lose an average of a half pound of lean muscle tissue each year starting at age 25. As an example, a typical 55-year-old woman will have 15 pounds less lean muscle (and significantly more fat) than what she had at age 25. Muscle takes up less space than fat, so this typical

55-year-old woman has arms and thighs that are softer and less firm, wears a larger clothing size, and has a slower metabolism that burns fewer calories each day. Effective strength training changes all of this. It increases your body’s metabolism, causing you to burn more fat and calories all day long. Strength training reshapes and tones your legs and arms. And since muscle takes up 20% less space than fat, adding muscle and losing fat will make your body firmer, smaller, and more shapely. A fit 140-pound person can wear clothes several sizes smaller than an out of shape 140-pound person. ONLINE AT ORANGECOUNTYLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

healthbeautyfitness How Can Slow-Motion Strength Training Work So Quickly? Slow-motion strength training involves brief and demanding workouts to get great results. The basic concept? Lift relatively heavy weights excruciatingly slowly (10 seconds to lift, another 10 seconds to lower) for as many repetitions as you can until you’re unable to move the weights anymore. And when you learn to challenge your muscles as deeply as a skilled trainer can teach, it’s impossible to workout much longer than 20 minutes, even if you try. Dr. Philip Alexander, physician and faculty member at Texas A&M University’s College of Medicine, explains that it’s the intensity of exercise that stimulates greatest changes. “A slower repetition loads the muscles more effectively and efficiently. It’s harder!” exclaims Alexander. “That’s why it stimulates such a great total response from the body.” Dr. Alexander has tracked hundreds of subjects using slow-motion strength training, noting significant improvements in muscular strength, HDL cholesterol profiles, bone density, and glucose tolerance. Other research adds more supporting data. Two separate studies by Wayne Westcott, Ph.D., and one study by Ellington Darden, Ph.D., demonstrate that slow-motion strength training produces 50% to 59% faster improvements than regular weight training. And because the repetitions are harder, each training session must be limited to 20 minutes—making this exercise method quite time efficient.

In 3 months Justin Brunette dropped 4 inches from his waist and lowered his body fat percentage by 6.4% with effective nutrition and weekly 20-minute training sessions at The Perfect Workout.

Joyce Reclaims Her Youthful Figure 54-year-old Joyce Magnuson had always been slim and slender when she was younger. But in her mid 40s, life’s stresses caught up with her and she began gaining weight. “During the next few years, I kept getting heavier, until I was thoroughly broken and disgusted with myself,” says Joyce. Fortunately, she happened to read an article about slow-motion strength training and how it would reshape her body with just two 20-minute training sessions per week. The effectiveness of the method made sense to Joyce, and she decided to enroll with a personal trainer at The Perfect Workout. ONLINE AT ORANGECOUNTYLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM
