Give Your Worn-Out Wood the “Wow” Factor Renewal Made Easy—Change the Color and Give It New Life!
Cabinet Renewal
H
igh style has moved from the runaways of Milan to our own homes. Chic trends and quality craftsmanship are the necessities of a home renovation. Whether a homeowner is preparing to sell, upgrade, or simply fix something that isn’t quite right, options and choices abound. While the ‘70s and ‘80s were a great time for many things, most homeowners want those years taken out of their kitchens and off their floors. Browsing local remodeling store aisles, it’s easy to fall in love with the colors and sophistication of today’s cabinets and floors. However, when a homeowner starts to visualize bringing a new look into their home, there is a good chance they will be overwhelmed with the timeframes and budgets. New floors mean a room cannot be used for days and sometimes weeks, while flooring and cabinets are demolished and replaced. Say good-bye to home cooked meals, and hello to eating out. Getting today’s freshest finishes and updated looks can seem out of reach, but there’s a new alternative to the expense, mess, and sheer chaos of ripping out floors and cabinets—let skilled craftsmen renew the floors and cabinets in a matter of days. Homeowners can upgrade to quality finishes that are well-rooted in the new millennium. Outdated, worn wood can be renewed with strong and striking finishes and little disruption. Bringing life back to your wood dramatically updates your home and minimizes downtime and expenses, instead of having parts of your home ripped up, ripped out, and banished to the landfill. Using time-tested techniques to renew existing wood floors and cabinets, the craftsmen remove wax and dirt build-up that make wood look flat and lifeless. The renewal process thoroughly cleans the surface, removes old coatings, repairs damaged areas with less mess, and applies an elegant finish. Have you always wanted chocolate cabinets or a rich cherry finish? You can go darker for a more modern look, for about a third of the cost of replacement. To begin the process, craftsmen will come in, evaluate your home, and provide an estimate for renewal. Often, homeowners who want to put their home on the market want to give it the “wow” factor in a number of days versus weeks, minimizing costs and maximizing convenience for getting their home sold.

REFURBISHING YOUR EXISTING FURNITURE
I
f your old sofa or dining set looks as though it’s on its last legs, don’t be too quick to bundle it out of the house. Resourceful homeowners are discovering that many old pieces have a value you can’t buy today. And they are restoring them through refinishing and reupholstery. The economics of restoring fine furniture works for them, too. For dollars and cents, it can be one of today’s best buys. The value is in the frame. If your old sofa, chair or table has a good frame, it is well worth restoring. A frame is the essential element in the structure, and if it’s solid there’s no point going out and buying a new one. So, what is a good frame? One that’s made of hardwood—oak or maple, for example. Hardwood is strong and has longevity. A clue is its weight—hardwood is heavy. That’s why furniture sales people will often lift up one end of a sofa when showing it to a customer. They are demonstrating the frame’s weight. And the frame is what your upholsterer can check out. The art of reupholstery. Building on your old frame (where you save big dollars,) the upholsterer reties the springs, puts in new webbing, all new padding and filling, and totally recreates the sofa. This is all handwork, involving a high order

Refinishing lets you restore life back to pieces of furniture that would otherwise be considered too worn out or old-fashioned for your home’s décor. Depending on the starting condition of your piece, professionals will do whatever it takes, from cleaning and minor repairs to more advanced improvements such as stripping and refinish, in order to rejuvenate your quality furniture. e use our bathroom on a regular basis, they play a vital role in our daily lives and most of the time get overlooked for regular maintenance until we think it is too late to revive. One common mistake made when unsightly mold and mildew take over your tile and grout is to spend thousands of dollars to replace it when you already spent that much to install the original surface. Another common mistake is when homeowners try to take matters into their own hands and start scrubbing, only they don’t realize that acidic cleaners can cause even more damage. Most stones are sensitive to acid, not to mention these cleaners can actually hurt the structural integrity of both grout and stone. Some simply don’t know that there are other more cost effective ways to removing mildew and mold. The technology is out there to effectively remove stains, mold and mildew from a hard surface for a fraction of the cost to replace it and will look Street of Dreams worthy. Unless you are dead set on replacing your hard surfaces and are willing to pay for a completely different design and style then the obvious, most cost effective choice would be to have it restored by a professional company with lots of experience dealing with all types of hard surfaces. One look at the numbers, and you will realize exactly how much restoration can save you. For example, a standard shower with 110 square-feet of tile and grout could cost you around $1,191.85 (plus tax) to replace. That same size shower would most likely only cost around $220.00 (plus tax) to restore. While this is just an example and each individual project has varying factors, you can definitely see which option is going to put more stress on your bank account. To get your tile and grout looking flawless once again, this revolutionary multistep cleaning process uses grease and soilcutting enzymes to break down heavy soils that are then removed using high-temperature rotary jet extraction equipment. Do You Need Skylights?
T
he great Pacific Northwest has some of the best scenery on the planet and when the sun shines, you remember why you live here. However, sunny days can be very scarce, in our part of the world. That is why skylights are a popular and simple way to add natural light to our homes and lives. Skylights can be used to brighten up any room in your home. They are most effective in hallways, stairwells, kitchens and large living spaces where the adjacent window light falls short. Living rooms, family rooms and great rooms tend to be shadowy during daylight hours. It just doesn’t seem right to have to flip on a light in the middle of the afternoon. A well-placed skylight will chase away those shadows, providing usable natural light for cooking, reading and other activities. Interiors become more a friendly and spacious environment for living. Because they are located on your roof, skylights yield much more light than vertical windows, for a longer duration during the day. Skylights will supplement the aesthetics of any living space, complimenting all architectural styles and adding value to your home. A skylight is one of the most affordable home improvement projects available, while giving the maximum return on your investment. The “wow” factor alone is priceless. So, to answer the question: Do you need skylights? Here is a simple one-question test. 1. Do you live in the Northwest? If you answered yes, then you definitely need skylights!

CENTRAL VACUUM SYSTEMS
O
f course, you want the best vacuum possible when it comes to cleaning your home. Because central vacuums are up to five times more powerful than the typical portable vacuum, homeowners tend to prefer this efficient cleaning option. However, central vacuum hoses are usually heavy, bulky, and definitely not ideal when you have to lug them up and down the stairs. And then when you are finished, you still have to find a way to fit that oversized hose into a closet that’s way too small. Luckily, there is a better way. Hide-A-Hose central vacuum systems are revolutionary—you will never have to carry or store a bulky hose again. Here’s how Hide-A-Hose works. Simply pull out the amount of hose you need from the inlet valve, connect your cleaning wand attachment, and begin vacuuming. When you are finished, the suction from the central vacuum power unit retracts the hose into the SmartTube™ system that is hidden behind the wall: it’s that clean and simple! One of the greatest characteristics of installing a built-in central vacuum system is the health factor. Because of its strength, this type of vacuum captures more dust, dirt and allergens, and completely removes them from your living space. Allergy sufferers’ symptoms can be improved up to 61% with a central vacuum system, according to the University of California Davis School of Medicine. If you are ready to enjoy a cleaner, healthier home with the most convenient method of vacuuming available, Omar’s Built-In Vacuums can help. Founded in 1965, Omar’s has enhanced homeowner lifestyle with flexible systems priced to fit family budgets. All power units are manufactured in Woodinville. How does the process work? First, verify that the foam you have is usable. It will have a number six or say EPS inside the recycle symbol on the foam. Can Beautiful Stone Surfaces
LAST FOREVER?
M
ost people don’t realize that granite and other natural stone surfaces are porous and must be protected against staining and dirt build-up. Over time, oils, food stains, mold, mildew and dirt will adversely affect the look and feel of your natural stone surfaces. Professionally sealing them will prevent this damage, will save you money and will keep them looking the way you want them to look with minimum effort on your part. First, the stone is deep cleaned with a proprietary enzyme that emulsifies the contaminants that have accumulated in the pores. Then, commercial vaporsteamer with 275-degree steam is used to force the now-emulsified “stuff” up out of the pores and off the surface. Last, the material is infused with quadrillions of “designer-molecules” that permanently bond with the molecules in the stone, forming an invisible barrier that won’t allow water or other liquids, (including oil), to penetrate it. The most obvious reason that this particular method of sealing is superior to the standard process is that it truly lasts forever. Forever Seal also cleans and permanently seals other surfaces such as tile, grout, concrete, slate, pavers, flagstone, brick and more, and can repair, restore and refurbish damaged and abused stone surfaces to like-new condition. Their services come with a no-nonsense lifetime warranty against staining. You can visit www.foreverseal.net or call them today at 425-296-1300. ONLINE AT NORTHWESTLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

Your New and Improved Outdoor Living Space
Is Just a Few Steps Away
F
rom proposal to purchase, the journey to your new, custom outdoor living space can be a little daunting, leaving you with mixed feelings of excitement and apprehension. However, here are five basic steps to ensure that you have a pleasant and stress-free construction experience. 1. List. Design leads want to hear your vision for the space. This includes all of the changes that you would like to see happen to make your life easier and more enjoyable. If you notice anything on a day-to-day basis that you might want to plan ahead for, write it down. If you find yourself thinking, “Maybe we could have our son/daughter’s wedding reception here this summer,” be sure to make a note. 2. Budget. Professionals recommend that homeowners budget for oneand-a-half to two times more what they ultimately want to spend on their project. While budgets can always be worked with, a cushion will accommodate any changes or last minute upgrades you may decide to make. An important thing to consider when budgeting is the longevity of the project. This helps ensure the accuracy of your proposal. 3. Shop. While this might mean lots of online forms and repeating your project several times to the receptionist on the phone, it will all be worth it. Not all contractors offer designs, or they may specialize in only one aspect of your project. Additionally, if you want your project finished in time for summer, it’s recommended that you get a proposal before April, as many homeowners will start scheduling appointments late spring in anticipation of the onset of warm weather. 4. Patience. Rushing a start date is one of the biggest reasons for project delays down the road. If you have project start or completion deadlines, make them known during the proposal process so professionals can tell you if it’s a possibility. Homeowners that succeed in pushing up their start date up

tend to not only experience more project delays along the way, but also suffer a more stressful project experience. 5. Enjoy. From breaking ground to the last nail, you should enjoy and make the best of your project experience. Get to know your project manager, never hesitate to raise questions or concerns, and speak up if you want to make any upgrades or changes. By the time your project is complete, a company’s goal should be not just to have built a beautiful outdoor living area, but a healthy, honest relationship with you. Roof Maintenance Keeps
Your Home Safe
T
he roof on a home is more delicate than it looks. When your roof is neglected for too long, weather, age, and corrosion can all cause extensive harm—resulting in extreme damage that you must attend to immediately. Debris build-up and moss growth are two of the leading contributors to roof damage. However, by cleaning and repairing your roof on a regular basis, you can completely avoid a stressful and expensive situation like this. Whether your roof is tile, shake, or composition, there are certain things that you should notice when regarding roof maintenance, and certain methods of cleaning that are unique for each type. Tile Roof There are two ways to approach tile roof maintenance. The first process starts with a low-pressure, high-volume water cleaning. Once cleaned, the valleys and channel flashings should be opened up and cleaned out to prevent debris buildup, which in turn can cause water to overrun the flashings, deteriorate the felt underlayment and cause leaking in the home. Once all cleaning and repairs are finished, the roof should be treated (lasting up to three years). If the home is under trees, an annual air cleaning is recommended and a professional should always be on the roof to minimize both damage and accidents.
32
NORTHWEST LIVING • FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014
The second option is to have the roof air cleaned. This will remove all debris and 90% of the moss from your roof’s surface. The roof is treated with a non-toxic chemical that will clean the surface naturally as it rains. The roof will be cleaned within two-to-three months and you will only need to re-treat it ever three years. Shake Roof The first way to clean a shake roof is to water clean it, make minor repairs and treat. With this process, you have the choice of treating the shakes with a cedar-tone tan or a driftwood gray color. All moss and fungus is removed, and the treatment will keep the fungus growth down. Moss and fungus deteriorates the shake, so this type of cleaning will extend the overall life of your roof. A different option is to air clean the roof, which removes all debirs and 70–80% of the moss, then treat it with an environmentally friendly treatment that is rain activated, cleaning the roof in about eight-to-ten months. Composition Roof Again, there are two different methods of cleaning for composition roofs. First, you can water clean and treat the roof every three years. The Great Outdoors, Every Day of the Year
T
he best part of living in the Seattle area is our climate: moderate temperatures and lush, green landscapes and gardens invite year ’round access to the outdoors. Sure, it rains a bit—the tradeoff for our beautiful vistas. Yet the latest home upgrade trend takes full control of Seattle’s climate—and makes the outdoor room accessible in any weather, blurring the boundary between indoors and out. Sound intriguing? It sure is. More than a sunroom, the NanaOutdoor Room is an all-glass, indoor-outdoor room concept that is fully convertible. Installing quickly, it provides the flexibility and individuality to use the house as needed, all year long. Start by completely enclosing your existing deck or outdoor room inside the sleek, all-glass structure. Now make the glass walls fully opening, with panels that easily slide away and stack neatly to the side. Best of all, the glass is completely frameless—even when the wall is closed, you still feel like you’re outside. “It gives you the flexibility and individuality to use your space as needed, year ’round,” says Rob Laris, who sells and installs the NanaOutdoor Room. “It’s the connection, the space between indoors and out, where the magic happens.”

The top-hung outdoor glass panels—which normal sunroom walls can’t support by the way—are on smooth tracks for easy, one-hand opening and closing. With no vertical frames, the glass walls seem to disappear, offering uninterrupted, panoramic views. High-quality furnishings—leather sofas, area rugs—stay protected from the elements with the NanaOutdoor Room. “The outdoor room has been one of the best ideas in Northwest house design,” says Laris. “It’s wonderful to feel the breeze, or to experience a storm coming through. And there’s nothing like using your deck all year long.” For more information about the NanaOutdoor Room or NanaWall opening glass walls or to make an appointment to visit the showroom, call Rob Laris at 425-825-7900. www.nanawall.com

A Lifetime Solution
To Gutter Problems
W
hile climbing the ladder to clean out your debris-filled gutters over and over again can be a tedious and stressful task, one cannot express the importance of having clog-free gutters while living in the Northwest. Leaves, pinecones, fir needles, and so many other things can get backed up in the gutters protecting your home, causing a big mess. And what about that section of the gutter that has started to pull away from your roof, taking the shingles with it? Wouldn’t it be nice if your gutters could function on their own without your assistance—no clogs, no roof damage, no messes? Luckily, there is a solution to this problem. With the only one-piece, leaf and debris shedding gutter protection system, you will never have to worry again. This gutter system works on the scientific principle of liquid adhesion. The gutter’s special curved design allows rainwater to travel down, around, and into the gutter’s trough while deflecting leaves and debris. Another advantage of this particular gutter system is the way it attaches to a house. A bracket attaches from the inside to the fascia board, rather than to the roof itself. Because of this method, the gutter will never pull away from the house due to water weight or accumulated debris. Each system is custom-fitted for every installation. They are constructed of
.032 aluminum, which is more than 20% thicker than the average materials used for standard gutters. Also, you will never have to worry about rusting or corrosion. It has a scratch guard enamel finish that is available in 14 different colors to suit your home’s exterior appearance, and will not chip, peel, or crack for as long as you own your home. LeafGuard® gutter protection systems from Englert, Inc. are truly a superior solution to old home rain gutter problems, guaranteeing free-flowing gutters for as long as you own your home as well as a transferable warranty. In the unlikely event you’re your LeafGuard system clogs or pulls away from your home (even from snow or ice), the professionals at LeafGuard NW will clean or replace it for free. For more information, you can call LeafGuard NW at 425-320-3520 or visit www.GuttersSeattle.com.
Keep Your
Bamboo Beautiful
A
plant that causes many problems in our landscapes and with our neighbors is bamboo. This grass grows in two forms—clumping and spreading. Clumping varieties are the ideal option for low screens and around patios and driveways. This form will not take over your landscape, nor will it damage your hardscape areas. Spreading bamboo is the most troublesome because of its new shoots that pop up in the lawn or planting beds. It is a common misconception that these new shoots come from seeds, however they are actually sprouting from the rhizome roots. They can damage patios, driveways, and even your home’s foundation. If you have a septic system, you could have extensive damage if nearby bamboo begins to invade. If you are interested in installing bamboo, you should know there is a way to contain it. The ideal way to install bamboo is to install a 60-mil-thick, 24-inch-deep polyethylene bamboo barrier with two inches exposed above the soil that completely surrounds your intended planting area. This will ensure that the roots do not spread beyond the desired area. This barrier must be maintained by cutting roots that try to jump over the exposed barrier. Homeowners with spreading bamboo that has taken off will kick over or spray new shoots. These solutions will hide the underlying issue while the underground roots continue to spread. If you already have out of control bamboo, you can either control and/or eradicate. This may be difficult if the bamboo is invading several of your surrounding ONLINE AT NORTHWESTLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM
neighbors. If you work with your neighbors, then the solutions investment level can be greatly reduced. If you wish to keep the bamboo to a select area to maintain a screen, then control is ideal. You can install a barrier to surround the desired bamboo and eradicate the reaming bamboo outside. Eradiation is a labor-intensive project that requires major excavation. An experienced contractor with extensive knowledge of bamboo removal is your best tool in winning the war. Green Spaces Landscaping is ready and able to install, control, or remove any bamboo for you. You can contact their professional landscape designers to assist with all of your bamboo needs. A Breath of Hope
W
e all know how crucial both oxygen and water are to our existence. What you might not be aware of is that by using modern and innovative approaches to health, there are more ways than ever to maximize the incredible benefits of these elements and are available right here!
Oxygen The human body needs oxygen to create new cells, fight bacteria, metabolize food and heal from injuries and illness. During a normal day, the average adult inhales approximately six pounds of oxygen, of which about two pounds are dissolved into the blood. Considering these facts, it’s only logical to consider that oxygen can be used in a more functional way to increase overall health. This is exactly what the innovative mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) does—whether you are currently suffering from an ailment and are looking for new ways to experience relief, or simply want to be proactive with your health, the benefits of HBOT can be enjoyed by everyone. Inside a mild hyperbaric chamber, the patient inhales 95% oxygen under 1.3 to 1.5 ATA pressure. In one hour inside the chamber, approximately 2.4 pounds of oxygen is inhaled. Red blood cells are immediately filled with oxygen and the rest is rapidly absorbed into the blood, cells, body fluids and tissues. Within a few minutes, tissue oxygen levels are far above normal—a state that has been scientifically proven to promote healing. This process can do so much for your body. It improves your immune system and detoxifies your body. It increases the production and circulation of your stem cells, the main healing force of your body, by 800%. It reduces inflammation. It builds new blood vessels in damaged areas, and repairs and rebuilds damaged cells. In some cases, it can repair nerve damage and ultimately gives you more energy, improving your clarity, focus and stamina.
