ost homes today have rugs and pets. Even the best-trained pet can have a bad day… and sometimes that bad day ends up on your good rug.

PET PUDDLES & KITTY CATASTROPHES – Urine, vomit, and feces are strong acidic stains that are damaging to rug fibers and dyes. These stains are often permanent damage if not cleaned up right away. When they penetrate into the interior absorbent fibers, especially if there are “repeat offender” areas, these become breeding grounds for bacteria and mildew. Full-immersion washing with sanitizing treatments is the only way to flush out and remove these odor-causing contaminants. BODY OIL, SALIVA & FUR – In favorite laying spots body oil, saliva, and fur break down and decompose. This bacterial process emits a pungent pet odor. This is why some rugs and furniture, even though there have never been any accidents, can still have a strong odor.

Favorite spots need to be cleaned regularly.

Here are some tips and solutions for protecting both your rugs and your pets. VACUUM REGULARLY – If your pets shed then weekly vacuuming is a must. With wool and natural fiber rugs it is best to NOT use a beater bar on the fibers and use suction only. Some hand tools made for removing pet hair can be used if not too aggressive. Moths lay eggs in areas of collected pet hair because their larvae feeds on it, so it is important to vacuum up corners where fur collects. QUICK CLEAN UP – Timing is everything with pet accidents. The worst damage to valuable rugs usually comes from the clean up attempt using miracle spot removers. WASH ANNUALLY – Rugs that have daily pet activity, and especially if kids are also playing on these rugs, should have annual washing to make sure they stay as clean and healthy surfaces for everyone. It does not bulletproof the rug, but it helps minimize the damage and extends the length of time before the next washing is needed. These “disposable” rugs can be temporarily placed over more valuable rugs (or flooring) during high pet accident danger times, such as when you have a house/pet sitter. When the risk is an extended period of time it may be best to wash, moth treat, and wrap your valuable rugs for storage and use these cheap synthetic rugs as substitutes until the pet accident phase passes.

ound passes through doors in two ways. The door itself is a solid barrier, blocking some sound waves while allowing others through. High density, solid doors offer very good sound reduction characteristics. Typically, the problem is the air gaps around the door and frame. The first step to soundproofing is to seal the air gaps preventing the noise from coming through. If that isn't enough, modifying or replacing the door is the next option. Soundproofing a door is much like weatherizing one. Any cracks or crevices that allow air to pass will allow sound to do the same. The hardware gaskets and perimeter sealing ultimately determine the sound rating that a door achieves. Make sure the door is well fitted to the frame, no gaps or crevices for sound to migrate through. If there are gaps use closed cell PVC tapes specifically designed for acoustical use. A door gasket will seal the area around most of the door but it will not fill in the gap between the door and the floor. For this you need a rubber loop door sweep. The sweep should barely touch the floor since the since the door will be difficult to open and close if the rubber sweep is too tight against the floor. Lift relatively heavy weights excruciatingly slowly (10 seconds to lift, another 10 seconds to lower) for as many repetitions as you can until you’re unable to move the weights anymore. And when you learn to challenge your muscles as deeply as a skilled trainer can teach, it’s impossible to workout much longer than 20 minutes, even if you try. Dr. Philip Alexander, physician and faculty member at Texas A&M University’s College of Medicine, explains that it’s the intensity of exercise that stimulates greatest changes. “A slower repetition loads the muscles more effectively and efficiently. It’s harder!” exclaims Alexander. “That’s why it stimulates such a great total response from the body.” Dr. Alexander has tracked hundreds of subjects using slow-motion strength training, noting significant improvements in muscular strength, HDL cholesterol profiles, bone density, and glucose tolerance. Other research adds more supporting data. Two separate studies by Wayne Westcott, Ph.D., and one study by Ellington Darden, Ph.D., demonstrate that slow-motion strength training produces 50% to 59% faster improvements than regular weight training. And because the repetitions are harder, each training session must be limited to 20 minutes—making this exercise method quite time efficient.
