homefashion Mattress Myth #2: Replace in 8

Why Your Mattress Should Last 10 Years or More

W

hen selecting a mattress, most people put comfort at the top of their list of priorities. But did you know that if you want your bed to retain a high level of comfort for several years, buying a mattress that you can flip is your best bet? Why? A mattress crafted with comfort layers on both sides balances out the wear pattern. When flipped and spun regularly, the just-slept-on side is given a chance to flatten out, eliminating “sleep trench.” With a “no-flip” bed, you sleep on only one side of the mattress, never giving the comfort layers a chance to even out. Some companies may tell you that double-sided mattresses are no longer produced because of “new technology” that doesn’t need flipping. Yet the truth is, many companies only offer “no flip” versions because they cost less to manufacture and wear faster, ensuring you’ll be buying a mattress again in no time. However, not all two-sided mattresses are alike. The materials used to construct the bed will also affect its comfort and longevity. The biggest expense in making a mattress is in the outer-most layers, and they are also the part of the mattress that wears out the fastest. That is why the best companies use natural materials such as latex, cotton and wool, which don’t break down like toxic polyurethane foam. Natural fibers also provide excellent regulation to keep you cooler, better air circulation, and are naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial and dust mite resistant—

providing a healthier sleep for you and your family. Pair that with a double-sided mattress and you’ve got a bed that is sure to provide greater comfort, support and resilience for years to come. NEW INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2017

N

ever before have there been so may exciting elements from which to choose in the fast paced world of interior design! If you are looking for a new style for your home interior, modern is the way to go for 2017! While traditional design has taken a back seat to more modern and “clean” styled interiors, for those of you who still like this look, some traditional materials such as terra cotta tiles are making a comeback! You will see them on entire walls, creating warm backdrops for a cozy feel. However, they will be more smooth in nature and less rustic than before. Raw, earthy and textural materials are on their way back. Design will lean towards much warmer tones. Colors such as deep purples and rich, dark emerald greens are on the forefront, emerging as some of the strongest colors this year. These colors can be used as a minor accent with deep impact and will mix well with burnished metals, fur and tan leather. Copper and rose gold will disappear, and in their place will come richer antiqued golds and darker metals. Steel and its relation to the industrial look are going to continue to be strong in 2017.

20

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • APRIL/MAY 2017

On a lighter note, Lucite, raw-cut quartz and other natural rocks and geodes will add sparkle and texture. Drapery fabrics will be sheer, adding a light and airy look to balance the heavier colors and darker metals. In addition, lighting has exploded and become one of the most daring and interesting pieces in a home. If you need help moving your home in a new direction for 2017, you may contact the interior designers at Obvious Flair at 949-2910412 and let them guide you through the exciting and multi-faceted world of today’s home design. T

he coast is more than just a location—it’s a way of life. Even though everyone eventually grows up, you might be the kind of person that still longs for that relaxed, nostalgic feeling of the beach. If this sounds familiar, you’ll be glad to learn that Coastal Living magazine and Stanley Furniture have come together to create a home collection inspired by their favorite beach cottages. Casual, fresh, and offering a multitude of different seaside colors, Coastal Living™ by Stanley Furniture allows coastal dwellers and dreamers to create a look that’s distinctly their own. Weathered driftwood, burnished boat fittings, louvered shutters, coral and sea grass serve as inspiration for the collection. Clean lines combined with heavy distressing and muted, grain-baring finishes and paint colors add to the collection’s natural contemporary look. Whether it’s painted in one of six nature-inspired colors, stained in light or dark tones, or finished in Weathered Pier or sandy linen, Coastal Living is all about the wood. Richly grained white oak veneers and hardwood solids show through, lending a casual, authentically natural feel. Heavy physical distressing completes its well-worn, laid-back look. Designed to work well in open floor plans of all sizes, Coastal Living marries old and new, blending the gently weathered style of coastal antiques with the functionality of high-tech modern furniture, integrating features like hidden power strips as well as sliding panels and cutouts for personal and home electronics. And since storage is always top of mind, Coastal Living features innovative storage solutions.

TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN AND OPEN YOUR LIVING SPACE

W

hile the home you fell in love with years ago may have suited you perfectly at the time, a creative kitchen renovation will address the changes in your lifestyle and expand your living space. In Orange County, most of the houses were built between the years of 1960 and 2000. During that time, houses were built with the kitchen hidden at the back of the house and small individual dining, family and formal living rooms. With today’s kitchen being the central hub of the home, opening up the kitchen to the rest of the house facilitates interaction between all rooms. There is a wide array of innovative options available. Removing a wall, vaulting a ceiling, opening view lines

and a creative cabinet layout can all contribute to the open concept. Updating your outdated kitchen with professional grade appliances will create a gourmet kitchen. This will increase the resale value of a home, but rather than looking at the upgrades in terms of selling, look at them as an investment in your quality of life. With extensive remodeling experience, a professional contractor can assist in turning your beginning ideas into detailed designs, providing layout ideas and additional resources that make the difference between a finished project with no detail and one that will grab the attention of every visitor as they walk through your home.

At the core of the design is an understanding of your wants and needs. The design professional’s first question is “How will you use the space?” Lifestyle drives the entire design. From there, a qualified designer and builder will create a kitchen that will be the foundation for your family for years to come. What to Know BEFORE REMODELING

R

enovating your kitchen and upgrading your bathroom gives your home a fresh new look, often increasing functionality, while adding to the value of your home. However, the process of choosing a remodeling company can be tiresome and stressful. With so many options available, where do you start and whom should you call? Selecting the right company can make a huge difference in the projects’ success. You want a company that will leave you with a peace of mind throughout the entire process, not to mention an end result that you are completely happy with. Here are some things to consider before tackling that kitchen or bathroom remodeling project. Local stability: A showroom and local manufacturing plant where you can view examples of their work and get the latest trends and products that are available on the market. Experienced designers: Make sure to ask questions such as, does the company have flexibility in the products they offer, and how is the project managed throughout the remodel. Licensing: Is the company licensed with the right classification for your scope of work? How long has the company been in business? Cabinet Finish: Catalyzed conversion varnish is the most durable finish available today. Finishing should never be done in the customer’s home, or in the person’s garage, so ask to see the finishing equipment and test the durability of the finish in the manufacturer’s showroom. Removing and replacing the cabinets with newly designed and manufactured custom cabinets does have its advantages, like allowing you to redesign the layout or create new interiors with adjustable shelving. Refacing existing cabinets, which means replacing the doors and drawer fronts, replacing the hinges and the molding, and covering the existing frames, is often a viable and cost efficient option. The process could include adding new drawers, slides and pullouts in the lower cabinets, and often being able to adjust some cabinets to accommodate new appliances. A combination of Refacing and Replacing offers savings while dramatically improving the look and feel of the room. The right approach to bathroom remodeling can turn a worn-out old room into a bright, spacious retreat. Custom-made bathroom vanities, cabinet replacing or refacing, granite countertops, and new tubs, showers, toilets and sinks are just some of the ways to reinvent this area of your home. Experienced designers will listen to your needs, know what questions to ask to help clarify your thoughts, and be familiar with the latest products available. They should also be comfortable working with older products that the homeowner might want to bring into the remodel. Always remember—the designer must keep in mind that everyone is different and that kitchens satisfy various needs and uses. The designer must be versatile and innovative in

planning in order to accommodate your lifestyles and your budget. Reborn Cabinets has met all of the above criteria for more than 30 years. Founded in 1983, Reborn Cabinets won the prestige Remodeler of the Year award by Professional Remodeler. Located at 2981 East La Palma Ave. in Anaheim, the company features a 40,000-squarefoot, well-equipped manufacturing and showroom/ design center with numerous displays and examples to enjoy—you can even take a tour or ask about their informative seminars given approximately every 6 weeks. Their South Orange County showroom is located at 23626 El Toro Rd. Suite B in Lake Forest (between Jamba Juice & Yogartland). Experienced designers are available seven days a week. YOUR WOOD

CABINETS AND FLOORS

O

ver time wood cabinets and floors look flat and lifeless due to dirt build up, wear and tear, scratches and age-discolored finishes. Cabinet and floor renewal is an innovative and affordable alternative to replacing, refacing (new doors), painting or traditional sanding/refinishing. In only a few days, your wood cabinets and floors will be restored to that like–new luster without the inconvenience, dust and odors from harsh chemicals. At a fraction of the cost, it will save you time and money. If you are looking to change the color of your cabinets, one option is to make a slight color change giving your cabinets a warmer tone of the wood without covering the wood grains. Pigments and dyes can be added to the new finish so that you can achieve virtually any color desired. Say you have maple cabinets and would like a slightly darker stained wood, the new finish can be custom dyed to your color preference and then professionally applied. You can chose to do a complete color change, which will dramatically change the style and look of your cabinets. Select from custom durable color finishes that do not chip or peel, and when applied there are no drips, streaks or bleed thru. If repairs are needed like gaps, holes, splintered wood, etc, they are made during the wood surface cleaning process. N-Hance Wood Renewal uses their proprietary, state-of-the-art non-toxic and odorless products. These products along with their advanced technology and processes were developed to provide consistent high quality results. For more information you can call, N-Hance Wood Renewal at (714) 907-1917. Regarding Going Solar

T

he cost of electricity in California has been going up 6% every year over the past 10 years and unfortunately, will continue to do so. Warmer months ahead mean more energy usage to keep the home cool which ultimately means higher energy bills. Many homeowners have taken advantage of going solar, but if you have contemplated the idea, you may have a few questions about why going solar is a smart choice for you and the environment. Some of the most common questions about transitioning your home to solar are: How many panels should I get? Your electric usage (your actual kWh usage from your electric bill) over the last 12 months determines the size of your system. How much will it cost? Going solar means you can harness the most abundant source of energy on Earth by essentially putting your very own utility on your own roof. If you are spending more than $80 per month on your electric bill, you can start saving immediately on your electric bills and reduce your dependence on utilities. Financing options – both leases and loans- are available as well, allowing you to spread the cost over 10-20 years with no money down.

44

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • APRIL/MAY 2017

What rebates are available? Previously, there were rebates and incentives available from the state of California and local utilities, but most of these have been used up. However, there is still a federal tax credit available, equal to 30% of the cost of your system, which can be taken as a one-time credit against your tax liability. This federal tax credit will be phased out over the next few years. For more information on how you can start saving immediately by going solar, you can contact REPOWER By Solar Universe at (949) 243-0312. Located in Irvine, they offer hands-on customer service and installation is backed by a 10 year warranty. You can visit their website at www.repowerirvine.com
