INVITINGLY FRESH

hen our client purchased their new home in Villa Park, they were referred to us by one of Southern California’s best real estate agents in the market. They called us immediately to revamp the dark, traditional style and breathe new life into this beautiful 11,000 square foot home. The homeowner is a busy executive of a large, wellknown national company based in Orange County. With a high pressure career, she wanted her home to feel like a comfortable, relaxing oasis. She knew hiring an interior designer would make her large-scale remodel stress free as we would take care of every detail. While the style of the home’s architecture is Mediterranean, our client wanted to have a subtle upscale tropical feel to be reminiscent of their vacations spent in Belize. To accomplish this, we mixed light hardwood floors with the existing travertine, added tropical feeling grass cloth wallpaper, brought in pops of color, selected furniture with natural elements like rattan and bamboo, and brought in tropical greenery and plants. Throughout the home, we completely gutted many areas and started from scratch to create better layouts and update the design. The master suite was one area in particular that received a complete overhaul. In the master bathroom, even though it was already a large space, it was laid out poorly so we started fresh and were able to give the client two vanities and make the tub a true focal point. In a section of the living room, we added a poker room for the client to host game nights. Throughout the home we added many sconces and beautiful chandeliers and lighting fixtures to create calming ambiance. The end result is open and airy and feels like an inviting retreat to unwind in.

homefashion Healthy Sleep Begins with

I

the Right Mattress

t’s a well-known fact that you spend about a third of every day in bed. Yet, if that time is used for restless tossing and turning, one thing is clear: your overall health will suffer. Studies by The National Institutes of Health (NIH) show that people who sleep well enjoy multiple benefits. They manage stress better and have more energy. They also minimize their risks of catching colds and even more serious diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Your mattress plays a big part. Chiropractors encourage people to buy a mattress that adapts to your spine’s natural curve while distributing pressure uniformly along the body. Adjustable beds can be a good choice for those who share a bed, or if you need to sleep with your head raised for any breathing concerns. A good mattress also regulates body temperature accurately. Why is this important? When sleeping on a mattress that is in poor condition, your body’s temperature will rise, which generates sweat. Your heart rate and blood pressure will correspondingly surge, and consequently, your breathing will become irregular, which often disturbs sleep. Since each person is different, there isn’t one kind of mattress that will fit every person’s concerns. It is important to consult with a sleep professional when deciding upon a mattress. They can assess your sleeping position to best recommend a mattress that is customized exactly to you.

NEW INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2017

N

ever before have there been so may exciting elements from which to choose in the fast paced world of interior design! If you are looking for a new style for your home interior, modern is the way to go for 2017! While traditional design has taken a back seat to more modern and “clean” styled interiors, for those of you who still like this look, some traditional materials such as terra cotta tiles are making a comeback! You will see them on entire walls, creating warm backdrops for a cozy feel. However, they will be more smooth in nature and less rustic than before. Raw, earthy and textural materials are on their way back. Design will lean towards much warmer tones. Colors such as deep purples and rich, dark emerald greens are on the forefront, emerging as some of the strongest colors this year. These colors can be used as a minor accent with deep impact and will mix well with burnished metals, fur and tan leather. Copper and rose gold will disappear, and in their place will come richer antiqued golds and darker metals. Steel and its relation to the industrial look are going to continue to be strong in 2017.

20

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

On a lighter note, Lucite, raw-cut quartz and other natural rocks and geodes will add sparkle and texture. Drapery fabrics will be sheer, adding a light and airy look to balance the heavier colors and darker metals. In addition, lighting has exploded and become one of the most daring and interesting pieces in a home. If you need help moving your home in a new direction for 2017, you may contact the interior designers at Obvious Flair at 949-2910412 and let them guide you through the exciting and multi-faceted world of today’s home design. What to Know BEFORE REMODELING

R

enovating your kitchen and upgrading your bathroom gives your home a fresh new look, often increasing functionality, while adding to the value of your home. However, the process of choosing a remodeling company can be tiresome and stressful. With so many options available, where do you start and whom should you call? Selecting the right company can make a huge difference in the projects’ success. You want a company that will leave you with a peace of mind throughout the entire process, not to mention an end result that you are completely happy with. Here are some things to consider before tackling that kitchen or bathroom remodeling project. Local stability: A showroom and local manufacturing plant where you can view examples of their work and get the latest trends and products that are available on the market. Experienced designers: Make sure to ask questions such as, does the company have flexibility in the products they offer, and how is the project managed throughout the remodel. Licensing: Is the company licensed with the right classification for your scope of work? How long has the company been in business? Cabinet Finish: Catalyzed conversion varnish is the most durable finish available today. Finishing should never be done in the customer’s home, or in the person’s garage, so ask to see the finishing equipment and test the durability of the finish in the manufacturer’s showroom. Removing and replacing the cabinets with newly designed and manufactured custom cabinets does have its advantages, like allowing you to redesign the layout or create new interiors with adjustable shelving. Refacing existing cabinets, which means replacing the doors and drawer fronts, replacing the hinges and the molding, and covering the existing frames, is often a viable and cost efficient option. The process could include adding new drawers, slides and pullouts in the lower cabinets, and often being able to adjust some cabinets to accommodate new appliances. A combination of Refacing and Replacing offers savings while dramatically improving the look and feel of the room. The right approach to bathroom remodeling can turn a worn-out old room into a bright, spacious retreat. Custom-made bathroom vanities, cabinet replacing or refacing, granite countertops, and new tubs, showers, toilets and sinks are just some of the ways to reinvent this area of your home. Experienced designers will listen to your needs, know what questions to ask to help clarify your thoughts, and be familiar with the latest products available. They should also be comfortable working with older products that the homeowner might want to bring into the remodel. Always remember—the designer must keep in mind that everyone is different and that kitchens satisfy various needs and uses. The designer must be versatile and innovative in

24

planning in order to accommodate your lifestyles and your budget. Reborn Cabinets has met all of the above criteria for more than 30 years. Founded in 1983, Reborn Cabinets won the prestige Remodeler of the Year award by Professional Remodeler. Located at 2981 East La Palma Ave. in Anaheim, the company features a 40,000-squarefoot, well-equipped manufacturing and showroom/ design center with numerous displays and examples to enjoy—you can even take a tour or ask about their informative seminars given approximately every 6 weeks. Their South Orange County showroom is located at 23626 El Toro Rd. Suite B in Lake Forest (between Jamba Juice & Yogartland). Experienced designers are available seven days a week. You can visit and browse their showrooms, or you can call Reborn Cabinets for more information at (888) 273-2676. www.reborncabinets.com.

Beautiful Woodwork

T

here’s an alternative to replacing your wood cabinets or floors. People often put off refinishing their cabinets or wood floors because of the inconvenience, dust, noxious odor, consumed time, and budget. Over time, dirt build up, wear and tear, scratches and age-discolored finishes can make wood look flat and lifeless. Replacing cabinets or refacing (putting on new doors) requires new wood to make their products. Traditionally, once wood floors, cabinets or other woodwork in the home reached the point where it looked terrible, the options were limited. The good news is that with the products and methods available today, restoring the beauty of wood has never been simpler or more cost effective. By improving the look of your existing cabinets, you will save time and money. Technicians experienced with this process and methods of renewing wood finishes can produce like-new luster to your wood cabinets, floors and trim without the waste, mess and harsh odors from chemicals or expense of traditional sanding and refinishing. This can be done in only days not weeks. Here’s how it works: A thorough cleaning is critical for great results, so the first step is to clean the wood surface of any dirt, grease and grime out of the pores. Any repairs needed are also made at this time including gaps, holes, splintered wood, etc. Once the wood surface has been cleaned and repaired, it is sealed and the new water-based finish is then applied. The newer water-based finishes available today have been proven to be as

strong and long-lasting as traditional oil-based finishes, but do not have the harsh chemical fumes or yellowing tendencies. It’s non-toxic and odorless. Additionally, pigments and dyes can be added to the new finish so that the technician can achieve virtually any color desired. Say you have maple cabinets and would like a slightly darker stained wood, the new finish can be custom dyed to your color preference and then professionally applied. Do you want a color change for your cabinets? The same cleaning and repair process is used and a stain or opaque finish is applied with a sprayer for a seamless, streak-free finish. The change can be as subdued or dramatic as you wish. Don’t replace your wood cabinets or floors—all you have to do is “N-Hance” them. N-Hance also does banisters, doors, fireplace mantels, windowsills, bamboo, cork, engineered veneer, hand-scraped and distressed wood floors, and much more. For more information about having your cabinets, floors or other woodwork in your home refinished, you can call N-Hance Wood Renewal at (714) 907-1917. You can also visit www.nhance.com

YOUR BACKYARD,

REIMAGINED our home is where memories are born, nurtured and cherished. Your backyard should be an important part of those memories. Whether it’s a tranquil retreat to come home to, an elegant space to dine and entertain or just a new makeover to an existing yard, the options are limitless. It is recommended to work with a company that can understand your needs and lifestyle and can handle the entire project from design to finish so that all aspects of the design come together in one united vision. This eliminates having to work with a variety of contractors. While creating the perfect backyard can mean different things to different people, there are many components that can go into building the ultimate backyard.

44

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

Pavers. Your outdoor living spaces serve much the same purpose as carpeting or hard flooring inside your home. Pavers add texture and color to your yard, giving it a finishing touch that creates a beautiful surface, enhancing the beauty of your outdoor living space. Pavers can be used in front or backyards for entryways, driveways, pool decks or the whole patio. Artificial Turf. If your lawn is constantly muddy because of poor drainage or is being overtaken by weeds, or worn out from the children playing, artificial turf is a great solution. A green, healthy lawn is not easy to keep up. With artificial turf, you do not need to mow, water or pull weeds! These kid and pet-friendly turfs are available in dozens of varieties to choose from so you can select the look and feel that most suits your vision and desire. For the golf enthusiast in the family, you can also include a putting green. Outdoor Kitchens. Whether you’re having a summer gathering with friends and family, grilling burgers or just enjoying a quiet fall evening making cocktails and cooking steaks, an outdoor kitchen is the perfect addition to your ultimate backyard. No more lugging food and drinks from the indoor kitchen – everything is right at your fingertips. Outdoor kitchens can include everything from built-in grills and stovetop burners to refrigerators, pizza ovens, and outdoor sinks to fit your lifestyle. Fire and Water. The ancient Greeks believed the world was made of four basic elements: earth, air, fire and water. Although today, it’s more complicated than that. However, when it comes to backyard design, the Greeks had it right. You already have earth and air, now fire and water bring it all together. The sound of crackling flames in a built-in fire pit as you sip your glass of wine after a long day at work can be very relaxing. Fire can also be incorporated by using a contemporary fire bowl or a Mediterranean chimney. Integrating the soothing sounds of water to this atmosphere can create the total ambiance in your yard. A sparkling pool, spa or water feature such as a freestanding fountain, wall-mounted fountain or a waterfall can create the perfect addition to your ultimate backyard. For information on how to design your perfect yard, you can contact Lifescaping Outdoors at 888-722-0941. You can also visit their website at www.lifescaping.com ORANGECOUNTYLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM
